Today’s Video of the Day from EurekAlert introduces a new theory on why humans take so much longer to mature compared to other warm-blooded species.
Professor Suzana Herculano-Houzel of Vanderbilt University explains that the number of neurons in the cerebral cortex is the best predictor of how long a species can live.
This could provide an explanation for why humans take a relatively long time to mature, considering that we have more neurons in this region of the brain than other animals.
