01-27-2020

Western Sicily from space Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency features western Sicily as it appears from space.

Two of the main Aegadian Islands, Favignana and Levanzo, are also featured in the photograph, which was processed so that vegetation appears in bright red. As seen above in the video Western Sicily from space shows the wide range of the city and surrounding areas. The terrain and aggriculutre it wide spread thoroughout the entire country showing the beautiful markings of the coastal towns and landscapes across the country.

The image was captured on September 3, 2018 by the Copernicus Sentinel-2A satellite. Sicily’s windswept western coast has beckoned invaders for millennia. Its richly stocked fishing grounds, hilltop vineyards and coastal saltpans were coveted by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Normans, all of whom influenced the region’s landscape and culture. It is an autonomous region of Italy, in Southern Italy along with surrounding minor islands, officially referred to as Regione Siciliana.  Sicily is located in the central Mediterranean Sea, south of the Italian Peninsula, from which it is separated by the narrow Strait of Messina.
