Today’s Video of the Day from NASA Science News introduces the Total and Spectral Solar Irradiance Sensor (TSIS), which will measure the amount of solar energy that is reaching Earth with more accuracy than any other instrument.
TSIS uses one sensor to measure the radiant energy from the Sun, and another sensor to measure how that energy is distributed over different wavelengths.
It is critical for scientists to monitor variations in the Sun’s energy, which have a major impact on our climate.
“So many factors influence Earth’s climate,” said TSIS lead mission scientist Peter Pilewskie. “We need to continue learning how they all interact. TSIS is helping us characterize the Sun’s behavior and how Earth’s atmosphere responds to the Sun.”
