Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency features the Ukrainian city of Kyiv along the Dnieper River in the north-central part of the country.
Home to approximately three million people, Kyiv is the most densely populated city in Ukraine. The Dnieper River, which flows southward through the city, is the fourth longest river in Europe.
Around 70 percent of Ukraine’s total land area of more than 40 million hectares is dedicated to agriculture, and the country’s main crops are corn, wheat, and barley. Large, agricultural plots are visible throughout the photograph.
Just above the city of Kyiv, the neon green colors in the Kyiv Reservoir represent a high concentration of algae. Algal blooms are caused by large amounts of nutrients in the water that result from human activities like fertilizer runoff from agriculture.
