Today’s Video of the Day from NASA Goddard tells the story of Landsat 9, which will continue a legacy of monitoring Earth from space that spans nearly 50 years.
At least one Landsat satellite has been orbiting Earth since 1972. By collecting data on the planet’s forests, farms, urban areas, and freshwater, the mission has compiled the longest continuous observational record of its kind.
Scientists all over the world use Landsat data to improve agricultural practices, allocate scarce water resources, respond to natural disasters, and to gain a better understanding of climate change.
The Landsat 9 mission, which is scheduled to launch in mid-2021, will continue to monitor key natural and economic resources.
