Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency describes how the European Data Relay System (EDRS) captures and transmits Earth observation data in almost real-time using advanced laser technology.
The system greatly reduces the time it takes for information to be received from Earth orbiting satellites, including critical observations of natural disasters as they are unfolding.
The EDRS is known as the “space data highway,” consisting of an extensive network of European ground stations and control centers. The system also includes two satellites, EDRS-A and EDRS-C, which are in orbit at a much higher altitude compared to low-Earth orbiting spacecraft.
