Today’s Video of the Day from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center describes a smartphone app that was created by a team of high school students in Maryland to warn people in advance of a dust storm.
After watching a powerful documentary, the students were inspired to learn everything they could about the dynamics and dangers of dust storms in an effort to design their early warning system.
The Dust Watch app alerts users when the early conditions of a dust storm emerge. Using National Weather Service forecasts improved by NASA data, the tool tracks the harmful aspects of the storms such as air quality, visibility, and wind speeds.
