Today’s Video of the Day comes from the American Chemical Society’s Reactions series and investigates whether or not melatonin actually helps you sleep.
Melatonin is a chemical made in your brain that works to regulate your circadian rhythm. As a result, it’s been marketed and sold as a supplement that can help you get to sleep sooner and stay asleep for longer.
The problem is that the proven effects of melatonin are very modest and only work for some people. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA in the United States, so you can bottle virtually anything and claim it will improve your health and/or well-being.
