India's Lonar Lake turned bright pink

11-04-2020

Today’s Video of the Day from the USGS describes a mysterious color that appeared last summer on the surface of Lonar Lake in central India.

Within a matter of days, the lake transformed from green to bright pink and then back to green again.

Based on similar events that are known to take place in Australia’s Lake Hillier and Iran’s Lake Urmia, scientists theorize that the changes observed in Lonar Lake may be caused by microscopic algae or the salinity levels in the water.

The image was captured on October 7, by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
