Today’s Video of the Day from NASA Goddard describes how the Hubble Space Telescope has transformed our understanding of the universe. Over the last three decades, Hubble captured more than 1.4 million observations.
Hubble has not only helped scientists answer some of the biggest astronomical questions, but has also uncovered even stranger phenomena, like the discovery of dark energy.
The spacecraft has explored stellar nurseries, found new planetary systems, and located black holes. In addition, Hubble revealed that the expansion of the Universe is speeding up.
The Hubble Space Telescope was launched on April 24, 1990 on the space shuttle Discovery. It was released into orbit the following day.
The telescope was designed to be serviced in space. Its modular components are simple for astronauts to handle and replace.
According to NASA, innovations that can extend the lifetime of Hubble’s equipment will keep the telescope exploring for years to come.
