Today’s Video of the Day from the USGS describes a powerful derecho storm that devastated farm fields across Iowa in August.
The derecho storm struck the Midwest with straight-line wind speeds of over 100 miles per hour, flattening fields of corn and soybeans.
Landsat 8 data captured 16 days after the storm reveals permanent damage to the crops. Iowa’s State Climatologist estimates that the derecho storm damaged 3.6 million acres of corn and 2.5 million acres of soybeans.
