The Dixie Fire rages on in Northern California

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows a massive amount of smoke streaming from the Dixie Fire. So far, this is the largest wildfire of 2021 in the state of California.

When the photo was taken on July 24, 2021, the Dixie Fire was still burning in Northern California two weeks after it broke out. 

According to NASA, the fire has consumed more than 208,000 acres of timber and chapparal in Butte and Plumas counties and in Lassen National Forest. 

The image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite.
