The Acarnanian Mountains on the Balkan Peninsula

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features an astronaut view of the Ionian Sea and the Acarnanian Mountains on the Balkan Peninsula.

The Acarnanians are a small range of limestone mountains. The largest peak is Psili Koryfi, reaching nearly 3,800 feet above sea level.  The photograph also shows the Ionian Islands, which are located off the west coast of Greece.

Lake Voulkarias (located between the mountains and the Ionian Sea) is a protected area for many endangered migratory birds. The Ionian Islands also include a marine protected area for birds other wildlife, such as the Mediterranean monk seal.
