Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the European Space Agency (ESA) and features a look at fires blazing on Mount Vesuvius.
The wildfires ignited following an extended period of high temperatures and significant drought in Italy. The smoke and ash caused some to wonder if the volcano was on the verge of eruption.
Mount Vesuvius is of course infamous for its 79 C.E. eruption that buried the city of Pompeii. The volcano hasn’t erupted since 1944.
This image was captured by the Sentinel-2B satellite on July 12th, 2017.
