Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the European Space Agency and features and overhead look at Manila Bay and Laguna de Bay. The photo was taken by the Sentinel-2A satellite and shows a piece of the city of Manila in the upper left.
Also visible are two bodies of water with distinctly different colors. On the left is Manila Bay, which has a much darker blue color due to its much greater size and depth. Manila Bay is also known as a “pollution hotspot” with very poor water quality due to runoff carrying sewage, pesticides, and fertilizers.
While Laguna de Bay is much smaller in size with a maximum depth of 4 meters, it still receives its share of pollution. In fact, the image shows two black plumes of water pollution emptying into the bay from the Taguig and Pasig rivers.
