Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency features a satellite view of Washington, where a state of emergency has been issued following days of severe wind and rain and widespread flooding.
According to NASA, the extreme weather was caused by an atmospheric river, a huge plume of moisture extending over the Pacific and into Washington.
The image, which was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, shows flooding around the Nooksack River. Hundreds of Washington residents were evacuated after the river spilled over its banks and washed out several roads. Power outages affected more than 158,000 people.
