Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows a massive smoke plume over northern Algeria on August 10, 2021.
According to NASA, some of the worst fires occurred in mountain areas near Bejaia and Tizi-Ouzou.
In the northern Kabylia region of Algeria, more than 70 fires have been recorded since August 9.
Alajazeera reports that this summer’s fires have been the most widespread, and the most devastating, that the country has experienced since its independence from France in 1962.
The fires have claimed the lives of at least 69 people, including many soldiers. Media reports say that the military did not have the equipment or the training needed to contain the fires.
The image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
