It looks like Legos are all the rage again! This month, The Lego Batman Movie hit number one at the box office. And now, BMW has created a model of the cool new flying motorbike using the same 603 parts in the Lego Technic BMW R 1200 GS Adventure kit.
After the Lego model was released in January, BMW was so impressed that they actually manufactured a full-sized version called the Hover Ride. This marks the first time that a Lego model has actually been built by an automobile manufacturer.
A team of engineers at BMW Junior in Munich set out to recreate the Hover Ride as a concept vehicle. Only a few components had to be specially created for the real life flying motorbike, such as the front-wheel rim.
“BMW Motorrad approached Lego Group with the idea of a collaboration because the two companies have much in common: they both successfully combine innovation and tradition in their brands and products, providing unforgettable experiences for young and old alike all over the world,” said Heiner Faust, BMW Head of Sales and Marketing.
“It was a great idea and a superb creative challenge to develop a fictitious model from the parts of the Lego Technic BMW R 1200 GS Adventure set,” added Alexander Buckan, Head of BMW Motorrad Vehicle Design. “Our concept not only incorporates the BMW Motorrad design DNA with typical elements such as the boxer engine and the characteristic GS silhouette, it also draws on the Lego Technic stylistic idiom.”
The Hover Ride was officially unveiled at Lego World in Copenhagen just last week and will be showcased at a variety of BMW bases in the coming months.
