Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency features a strikingly beautiful stellar nursery, AFGL 5180, located in the constellation of Gemini.
According to ESA, potential clues about the formation of our own solar system can be found among the vast clouds of star-forming regions like this one.
A massive star is forming in the center of the image, which was captured by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.
Stars are born within the clouds of dust, and this can prevent scientists from getting a clear view of young stars that are forming. Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) instrument is designed to capture images in both visible and infrared light, which can reveal the details of a stellar nursery like AFGL 5180.
