Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at severe flooding in Sri Lanka last week.
This image was captured on May 28, 2017 following over 48 hours of nonstop torrential rain in southern Sri Lanka. The false-color image was taken by the MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI) on the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 satellite.
The severe flooding has contaminated water supplies and affected over half a million people, according to Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Center.
The city of Matara was among the hardest hit, with many areas along the Nilwala Ganga River becoming completely submerged in water.
