Today’s Image of the Day looks like something out of a Tim Burton movie, but it’s actually a photo of Norway’s famous fjords. The image comes thanks to the European Space Agency’s Proba-V minisatellite.

So what is a fjord anyway? Fjords are classified as narrow inlets along steep cliffs that have been carved out by eroding glaciers during various Ice Ages. Once the glaciers melted away, ocean water rushed in which caused the valleys to get deeper and deeper.

The jagged-looking formations are most commonly found along expansive coast Norway’s coast, which stretches up to 62,000 miles in length.
