Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features heavy wildfire smoke over the Puget Sound in northwestern Washington and the Pacific Ocean. The smoke is rising from the Bolt Creek Fire, which is burning out of control in the western foothills of the Cascade Mountains.
On the western slopes of the Cascade Range in Oregon, the Cedar Creek Fire is burning in the Willamette National Forest.
There are currently 94 large, active fires burning across eight states in the Western US. Air quality alerts have been issued for much of Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
The photograph was captured on September 10, 2022 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite.
