Gulf of Taranto off the coast of Italy is seen here in this Image of the Day, thanks to the NASA Earth Observatory. The gulf measures 90 miles in length by 90 miles in width and is located just off the coast of southern Italy. The gulf is surrounded by the Italian regions of Apulia, Basilicata, and Calabria. The city of Taranto is known as an important port that holds steel factories, oil refineries, and shipyards.
