Chilko Lake in British Columbia Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at Chilko Lake in British Columbia, Canada.

Chilko Lake is located in the Coast Mountains, just about 155 miles north of Vancouver, Canada.

It holds the title of largest natural high-elevation lake in Canada, measuring 3,855 feet in elevation. In total, the lake extends 40 miles in length and 3.2 miles in width, and its maximum depth reaches roughly 1,200 feet.The first British settlement in the area was Fort Victoria, established in 1843, which gave rise to the City of Victoria, at first the capital of the separate Colony of Vancouver Island. Subsequently, on the mainland, the Colony of British Columbia (1858–1866) was founded by Richard Clement Moody[9] and the Royal Engineers, Columbia Detachment, in response to the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush. Moody was Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works for the Colony and the first Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia: he was hand-picked by the Colonial Office in London to transform British Columbia into the British Empire‘s
