Today’s Image of the Day comes from the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at the terrible flooding in Peru this month following a period of heavy rains.
This false-color image was taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA’s Aqua satellite. In the center, Lago La Niña and the Piura River can both be seen spilling over their banks.
Since mid-March, Peru has been trenched with torrential rains causing mudslides and dangerous flooding. According to Reuters, over 70,000 people have lost their homes and more than 80 people have died.
