Corals act more like us humans than one might think. These aquatic structures host an array of marine life while also depending on their microenvironment to survive and grow. Just like humans take multivitamins to stay healthy, corals rely on essential nutrients to thrive.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-multivitamins-for-corals">Multivitamins for corals</h2>



Enter the researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). They've been busy in the lab, testing an innovative concept: nutrient-infused tiles aimed at supercharging the immune system of corals. It's like a daily multivitamin, but for corals. 



The goal? They aim to prevent coral bleaching, and to help corals to weather the stress of shifting ocean temperatures and to bounce back from harsh climate events such as hurricanes.



"We are studying how corals react when grown on substrates that have been infused with essential metal micronutrients, like manganese, zinc, and iron," explained Colleen Hansel, a senior scientist and marine chemist at <a href="https://www.whoi.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WHOI</a>.



There's an urgency to this work, as rapidly warming waters and an active hurricane season make field trials difficult.



However, hope is not lost. Preliminary data harvested from a year’s worth of lab experiments suggests that corals which received a nutrient boost early on were more resilient and resistant to heat stress.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-reef-brought-to-life">A reef brought to life</h2>



Armed with this data, the team's next plan is to take these nutrient-infused tiles and embed them in an artificial reef. 



Designed by experts at the University of the Virgin Islands (<a href="https://www.uvi.edu/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UVI</a>), this 20 sq. meter (216 sq. ft.) concrete setup will offer a safe home to juvenile corals that need multivitamins.



It also doubles as a settling spot for coral larvae, while the nutrient-rich tiles ensure vitamins are dispersed into the surrounding waters. This not only promotes coral growth, but also prepares them for environmental stressors.



"The artificial reef we're building is going in next to a natural reef that has been severely impacted by marine heat waves and extreme storm events," explained Marilyn Brandt, a coral disease ecologist at the UVI.



This man-made marvel won't just fend off storm surges and erosion, it will also create a habitat for corals struggling to adapt to climate change effects. The ultimate goal of the reef's establishment is to help restore the natural reefs in the area.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-monitoring-corals-and-multivitamin-tiles">Monitoring corals and multivitamin tiles</h2>



To ensure the ongoing success of this cutting-edge approach, continuous monitoring and adaptation are integral. Scientists plan to deploy advanced monitoring systems that will track <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/great-barrier-reef-is-on-the-brink-of-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral health</a> metrics in real-time. 



This will include assessments of coral growth rates, color changes indicative of stress, and local water conditions. Such data will allow researchers to alter their strategies promptly, adjusting nutrient concentrations or tile placements as necessary to optimize coral resilience.



A dynamic interplay between technology and ecological understanding will ultimately support these living structures in adapting to ever-changing marine environments.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community-engagement-and-education">Community engagement and education</h2>



Beyond laboratory experiments and scientific endeavors, community engagement plays a pivotal role in coral conservation. Educational initiatives aim to involve local communities and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/60-percent-global-coral-reefs-face-bleaching-rising-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">raise awareness</a> about the importance of coral ecosystems. 



Workshops, seminars, and hands-on restoration activities promote a sense of stewardship among residents and visitors alike. By incorporating traditional knowledge and local insights, these programs ensure a holistic approach to coral reef preservation.



As communities learn and participate in restoration efforts, they contribute to a sustainable model that may serve as a blueprint for similar conservation projects globally.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-balancing-the-ecosystem">Balancing the ecosystem</h2>



Of course, in the grand scheme of the ocean world, balance is key. While the "multivitamin" tiles will help corals, researchers are cautious that they don't end up favoring a specific coral type or promote the intrusion of unwanted species.



As a result, Brandt, Hansel, and their colleagues are keen to examine this while generating a diverse environment beneficial to the reef ecosystem.



"We need to be sure an artificial reef looks and sounds as similar to a natural reef as possible," said Hansel. "That doesn't consist of just coral, but also sponges, anemones, and other biogeochemical components of the reef ecosystem."



Thus, it's evident that these nutrient-infused tiles, created with dedication and an innovative spirit, could provide a vital lifeline for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-illuminates-fish-interactions-in-coral-reefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral reefs</a> in these changing times.

In the first study of its kind, researchers at <a href="https://www1.lehigh.edu/">Lehigh University</a> have used a direct measure of skyglow to investigate the relationship between light <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-contributed-to-1-67-million-deaths-in-india-last-year/">pollution</a> and preterm births. The experts report that exposure to skyglow increases the likelihood of preterm labor by as much as 13 percent.

"We find evidence of reduced birth weight, shortened gestational length, and increases in preterm births," wrote the study authors. "Specifically, increased nighttime brightness, characterized by being able to see only one‐fourth to one‐third of the stars that are visible in the natural unpolluted night sky, is associated with an increase of 1.48 percentage points in the likelihood of a preterm birth."

According to study co-author Muzhe Yang, a professor of Economics in Lehigh's College of Business, one possible biological mechanism underlying the findings, based on the existing literature, is light-pollution-induced circadian rhythm disruption. Professor Yang explained circadian rhythm disruption can cause sleep disorders that subsequently lead to adverse birth outcomes.

"While greater use of artificial light at night (ALAN) is often associated with greater economic prosperity, our study highlights an often neglected health benefit of 'darkness,'" said Professor Yang. "We must realize that the biological clock (i.e., the circadian rhythm) of a human body, like all lives on the earth, needs the 'darkness' as part of the light-dark cycle, in order to effectively regulate physiological functions, such as sleep."

The researchers noted that the societal benefits of ALAN, such as increased economic activity, may be offset by the negative impacts of light pollution to human health. 

"Our study adds to the literature on the impact of early‐life exposure to pollution, which so far has focused primarily on air pollution," wrote the experts. "Our study has important policy implications regarding the necessity of minimizing skyglow that is, for example, contributed by streetlights."

The study is published in the <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/23258012">Southern Economic Journal</a>.

Toxic algae blooms raise the risk of fatal heart disease in sea otters. A neurotoxin produced by algae blooms is causing fatal heart disease in sea otters, according to a new study from <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/">UC Davis</a>. Southern sea otters are inadvertently ingesting domoic acid by eating contaminated crabs and clams.

"Sea otters are an amazing indicator of what's happening in the coastal environment, not just to other marine animals, but to us, too, especially on the issue of domoic acid," said study senior author Christine K. Johnson is the director of the <a href="https://ohi.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/about/teams/epicenter">EpiCenter for Disease Dynamics</a> in the One Health Institute.

Domoic acid is produced by harmful algal blooms and accumulates in the marine food web. In 2015, a massive warm water "blob" created a widespread bloom along the West Coast. Levels of domoic acid became so toxic that the Dungeness crab fishing season was forced to close.

The past five years are the hottest on record for the world's oceans, which means that toxic algae blooms and domoic acid exposure will continue to rise.

To investigate the relationship between long-term exposure to domoic acid and fatal heart disease in southern sea otters, the experts analyzed data from 186 free-ranging individuals in California from 2001 to 2017. Of those otters, heart disease was listed as a cause of death for 34 of the 48 otters that died during that time.

The scientists found that otters who consume a high proportion of crabs and clams have a 2.5 times greater risk of fatal heart disease. Even southern sea otters who do not consume large amounts of crabs and clams have nearly double the risk of dying from heart disease as a result of exposure to domoic acid.

The researchers also that discovered domoic acid is particularly harmful to prime-age adult sea otters, whose survival is vital for population growth.

"That's worrisome for the long-term population recovery of southern sea otters, which are a threatened species," said study lead author Megan Moriarty. "This study emphasizes that domoic acid is a threat that isn't going away. It's a food web toxin and is pretty pervasive."

Study co-author Melissa Miller, a veterinarian and pathologist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, recently led a separate study analyzing the causes of death of sea otters.

"Improving our understanding of the effects of domoic acid on the health and population recovery of southern sea otters is extremely important" said Miller. "Given their unique biology and specialized diet, sea otters are extremely vulnerable to toxic algal blooms, which are likely to worsen with climate change. So the results of this work have far-reaching implications."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.journals.elsevier.com/harmful-algae">Harmful Algae</a>.

The gut and the brain are connected in many ways, and a growing collection of research suggests that gut-brain interactions are critically important to our health. In a new study from the <a href="https://www.mit.edu/">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a>, researchers developed an "organ-on-a-chip" system to investigate how microbes living in the gut affect <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-severe-covid-19-infections-start-in-the-brain-not-the-lungs/">brain</a> health.

Gut-brain interactions can make us irritable when we are hungry, or cause physical pain in the stomach when we are nervous. Recently, experts have determined that gut bacteria may even influence neurological diseases.

In the lab of study senior author Professor Linda Griffith, researchers have worked for several years developing microphysiological systems - small devices that can be used to grow engineered tissue models of different organs, connected by microfluidic channels. In some cases, these models can offer more accurate information on human disease than animal models can, noted Professor Griffith.

The researchers used this system to model the influence of gut microbes on healthy brain tissue compared to tissue samples obtained from patients with Parkinson's disease. 

The study revealed that short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are produced by microbes in the gut and are transported to the brain, can have very different effects on healthy and diseased brain cells.

"While short-chain fatty acids are largely beneficial to human health, we observed that under certain conditions they can further exacerbate certain brain pathologies, such as protein misfolding and neuronal death, related to Parkinson's disease," said study lead author Martin Trapecar.

Previously, Caltech Professor Sarkis Mazmanian discovered a connection between SCFAs and Parkinson's disease in mice. He showed that SCFAs, which are produced by bacteria as they consume undigested fiber in the gut, sped up the progression of the disease. On the other hand, mice raised in a germ-free environment were slower to develop the disease.

The MIT team set out to expand on these findings using their microphysiological modeling system. For the Parkinson's model, the experts used cells that carry a mutation that causes the accumulation of a protein called alpha synuclein, which damages neurons and causes inflammation in brain cells. They also used brain cells that have this mutation corrected and are otherwise identical to the diseased cells.

First, the researchers studied these two sets of brain cells in microphysiological systems that were not connected to any other tissues. Under this condition, the Parkinson's cells showed more inflammation than the healthy, corrected cells. The Parkinson's cells were also less able to metabolize lipids and cholesterol.

Next, the investigators connected the brain cells to tissue models of the colon and liver, using channels that allow immune cells and nutrients - including SCFAs - to flow between them. The team discovered that for healthy brain cells, being exposed to SCFAs is beneficial, and helps them to mature. However, diseased brain cells did not benefit from exposure to SCFAs. Instead, the cells experienced higher levels of protein misfolding and cell death.

The same effects persisted even when immune cells were removed from the system, indicating that the effects are mediated by changes to lipid metabolism.

"It seems that short-chain fatty acids can be linked to neurodegenerative diseases by affecting lipid metabolism rather than directly affecting a certain immune cell population," said Trapecar. "Now the goal for us is to try to understand this."

The researchers plan to model other types of neurological diseases that may be influenced by gut-brain interactions. According to Professor Griffith, the findings offer support for the idea that human tissue models could yield information that animal models cannot. 

"We should be really pushing development of these, because it is important to start bringing more human features into our models," said Professor Griffith. "We have been able to start getting insights into the human condition that are hard to get from mice."

The surface layer of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-worlds-oceans-have-become-less-resilient-to-climate-change/">ocean</a> is thinning, leaving the water more susceptible to extreme warming events, according to a new study from <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/">UC Boulder</a>. The researchers found that as the surface mixed layer becomes shallower, marine heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense. 

The findings may explain a recent increase in extreme marine heatwaves. The research also indicates that ocean warming will become progressively more destructive as temperatures continue to rise.

"Marine heatwaves will be more intense and happen more often in the future," said study lead author Dillon Amaya. "And we are now understanding the mechanics of why. When the mixed layer is thin, it takes less heat to warm the ocean more."

The mixed layer, the top 20 to 200 meters of the ocean, has a uniform water temperature. The thicker this layer is, the more it can shield the deeper waters from hot air. 

"Think of the mixed layer as boiling a pot of water," said Amaya. "It will take no time at all for an inch of water to come to a boil, but much longer for a pot filled to the brim to heat through."

The researchers used ocean observations and computer models to estimate the depth of the mixed layer over the last 40 years. They determined that since 1980, the layer has thinned by nearly three meters in some regions of the North Pacific. 

Future projections revealed that by 2100, the mixed layer will become even shallower by four meters. This will be 30 percent less than the depth of the layer today.  

According to the researchers, this thin mixed layer combined with warmer global temperatures will set the stage for drastic swings in ocean temperatures, leading to much more frequent and extreme heating events.

The effects are already underway. In 2019, a marine heatwave warmed the Northeast Pacific Ocean by about three degrees Celsius. The study authors found that a thinning mixed layer most likely contributed to the event. 

"If you take the same wind and ocean conditions that occurred in 2019 and you apply them to the estimated mixed layer in 2100, you get a marine heatwave that is 6.5 degrees C (12 F) warmer than what we say in 2019," said Amaya. "An event like that would absolutely devastate sensitive marine ecosystems along the U.S. west coast."

Amaya explained that as the climate continues to warm and the mixed layer continues to thin, scientists may start to lose the ability to predict year-to-year ocean surface temperatures. "In order to simulate these events in models and help predict them, we must understand the physics of why that's happening."

The study is published in the <a href="https://journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/bams/bams-overview.xml">Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society</a>.

An unprecedented rate of glacier retreat threatens the future of Alpine plants. While these plants will initially benefit and diversify as more land is cleared, the researchers found that many species will soon become <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hotter-summers-are-transforming-endangered-bunchgrass-prairies/">endangered</a>.

"Our results indicate that plant diversity will ultimately decrease once the glaciers disappear - and up to 22% of the species we analyzed may locally disappear or even go extinct once the glaciers are gone," said study lead author Dr. Gianalberto Losapio of <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/">Stanford University</a>.

"We show that 'not all species are equal before global warming' and that there are some species benefiting from global warming, the so-called 'winners,' while others - 'the losers' - will suffer."

Glacier retreat exposes new areas for plants to grow, but also changes the habitability of ecosystems downstream. Dr. Losapio and his team reconstructed the positions of four glaciers in the Italian Alps, and then estimated the age of downstream communities.

This information, along with survey data on 117 Alpine plant species, was integrated into a computer model to study how plant distribution has changed over the past five millennia. The model also accounted for local environmental conditions and forecasted the effects of future glacier retreat.

The results of the analysis indicated that there were shifts in the interactions within plant communities, and competitive species had ultimately become more prevalent. Even though some cooperative species were the first to colonize the communities, their populations had declined within only 100 years.

While the findings do not explore the potential role of evolution, it is unlikely that Alpine plants will have time to adapt to their new conditions at the current rate of glacier retreat.

"Plants are the primary producers at the basis of the food web that sustains our lives and economies, and biodiversity is key to healthy ecosystems - biodiversity also represents an inestimable cultural value that needs to be properly supported," said Dr. Losapio. 

"Our study, with its results and innovative approach, may help conservationists, natural park managers and practitioners to mitigate and anticipate the consequences of anthropogenic impact on Earth's ecosystems."

People often use beat gestures, such as moving their hands up and down, to emphasize important words as they <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/speaking-two-languages-exercises-the-brain-protecting-against-dementia/">speak</a>. But do these gestures have an influence on how well we understand what a speaker is saying?

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.mpi.nl/">Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics</a> have found that what we see does, in fact, shape what we hear. 

"In face-to-face communication, language entails much more than just speech," explained study senior investigator Hans Rutger Bosker. "Speakers make use of different channels (mouth, hands, and face) to get a message across. We want to understand how listeners make use of these different streams of information when they are listening to someone." 

The McGurk effect is a phenomenon that suggests there is an interaction between hearing and vision in speech perception. This type of illusion takes place when one sound is paired with the visual component of another sound, which tricks our auditory perception.

The researchers set out to investigate whether what we hear may depend on the beat gestures we see. The study was focused on a set of Dutch words that differ only in stress pattern. 

For example, the word "PLAto," with stress on the first syllable, refers to the ancient Greek philosopher. But when there is stress on the second syllable, the word becomes "plaTO," or plateau.

The experts designed an experiment to test whether beat gestures used at the first or second syllable would change how people interpreted what they heard.

The study revealed that listeners were more likely to hear stress on a syllable if there was a beat gesture on that syllable. The effects were the same for both words and non-words. Beat gestures were even found to influence when people perceived a vowel as being long or short. 

"Listeners listen not only with their ears, but also with their eyes," said Bosker. "These findings are the first to show that beat gestures influence which speech sounds you hear." 

According to the researchers, the effect of beat gestures is probably even stronger in real life, when speech is less clear than it is in the lab. In noisy settings, people may rely more on visual beat gestures for successful communication. 

"Our findings also have the potential to enrich human-computer interaction and improve multimodal speech recognition systems. It seems clear that such systems should take into account more than just speech," said Bosker. 

"We will follow up on the study by using virtual reality to test how specific these effects are - are they induced by beat gestures only or also by other types of communicative cues, such as head nods and eyebrow movements?"

Plants and other organisms can physiologically adapt to changing environmental conditions, but this ability has its limitations. In a new study from the <a href="https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/university/">University of Würzburg</a>, researchers have investigated why plants often malfunction when exposed to extreme conditions. 

The leaves of a dandelion are much smaller in sunny locations where less leaf area is needed to adequately support photosynthesis. This is an example of a plant's genetic programming.

However, under persistent heat stress, dandelions may deviate from their normal programming. As a result, they can develop a wide range of unnatural leaf shapes in a response that is referred to as a "hidden reaction norm."

"Organisms withstand normal ranges of environmental fluctuations by producing a set of phenotypes genetically programmed as a reaction norm; however, extreme conditions can expose a misregulation of phenotypes called a hidden reaction norm," explained the researchers.

"Although an environment consists of multiple factors, how combinations of these factors influence a reaction norm is not well understood."

Prior to this study, the exact cause of hidden reaction norms has been largely unknown. But as Earth's climate continues to shift, it is more important than ever before to understand what triggers such abnormalities.

The investigation was focused on a variety of malformed leaves that sometimes develop in the carnivorous Australian pitcher plant Cephalotus follicularis. In an effort to pinpoint the cause of hidden reaction norms, the researchers exposed the plants to different conditions for twelve weeks in growth chambers.

"The hidden reaction norms of this plant could be revealed when uncommon combinations of benign or neutral environmental stimuli prevail," said Dr. Kenji Fukushima. This causes the plant to deviate from its normal programming, forming either flat, photosynthetically active leaves or leaves that are transformed into insect traps.

When plants were exposed to summer temperatures with fewer daylight hours, they increasingly formed misregulated leave phenotypes. These are the precise conditions that are becoming more common in many regions of the world due to climate change - hotter temperatures on spring and autumn days with less daylight. 

"Our results suggest that even if individual cues are within the range of natural fluctuations, a hidden reaction norm can be exposed under their discordant combinations," concluded the researchers.

"We anticipate that climate change may challenge organismal responses through not only extreme cues but also through uncommon combinations of benign cues."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/journal/rspb">Proceedings of the Royal Society B</a>.

In a new study published by <a href="https://plos.org/">PLOS</a>, researchers investigated the geographical patterns of Lyme disease. The experts have discovered that a tick's host-seeking behavior, as well as their preferred hosts, can explain why Lyme disease is more prevalent in the northeastern region of the United States compared to the southeast.

Ticks contract Lyme disease by biting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-share-many-of-the-same-behaviors-as-animals-that-live-nearby/">animals</a> that are infected with Borrelia bacteria. Infected ticks can pass the disease along to humans. While it was known that Lyme disease is more commonly diagnosed in the northeast, the causes of this discrepancy are unclear. 

To investigate, a team led by Dr. Howard Ginsberg of the U.S. Geological Survey Patuxent Wildlife Research Center conducted an extensive study of tick-host interactions at eight field sites throughout the eastern U.S.

The researchers found that southern ticks have a tendency to select lizards as their hosts, rather than small mammals. This is significant because lizards infected with Borrelia bacteria are less likely to pass it along to other ticks compared to mammals. 

The tendency of southern ticks to bite lizards instead of mammals may explain why fewer ticks, and fewer people, develop Lyme disease in the South. 

"Northern blacklegged ticks attach mostly to mice and other mammals, while southern ticks love lizards, especially skinks," said Dr. Ginsberg. "It's interesting that this quirk in tick ecology can have such an important effect on human health."

Dr. Ginsberg's team previously reported that southern ticks tend to stay below leaf litter when seeking hosts, while northern ticks usually climb to leaf tops and twigs. This increases the likelihood that northern ticks will encounter and bite humans. 

Furthermore, variations in tick densities from north to south could help explain the Lyme-disease gradient. Future research is needed to explore how climate change may affect ticks and their hosts, potentially altering Lyme disease patterns in the U.S. and Canada.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/">PLOS Biology</a>.

While it is known that Earth is warming rapidly, there is not enough observational data in places like the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-favors-some-arctic-insects-over-others/">Arctic</a> to accurately assess temperature variations across the globe. In a study from the <a href="http://english.iap.cas.cn/au/bi/">Institute of Atmospheric Sciences</a>, experts have taken a new approach to investigating temperature increases worldwide.

The international team has just released a new dataset that combines global surface temperatures, including reconstructed land and marine measurements, from the 1850s to 2018. 

An analysis of the data produced evidence of a steadily increasing warming trend that is more consistent than previous estimates. The trend closely matches the available observational data, as well as model simulations of the past two decades.

Study lead author Qingxiang Li is a professor in the School of Atmospheric Sciences and in the Key Laboratory of Tropical Atmosphere-Ocean System at Sun Yat-Sen University.

"The global surface temperature is one of the most important and accurate essential climate variables in the Earth system, yet there are still a number of discrepancies among the evaluation of magnitude of global warming," said Professor Li.

"The importance of global complete coverage dataset is emphasized in recent studies of the 'hiatus' period, when global warming appeared to slow from 1998 to 2012, especially for observations of high-latitude regions such as the Arctic."

To gain a better understanding of how the planet has warmed, the team previously combined the global land surface temperature dataset with a reconstructed sea surface temperature dataset from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to create the China Merged Surface Temperature (CMST) dataset. 

In their latest study, the researchers updated the CMST with a reconstructed global land surface temperature dataset.

"The resulting dataset is the CMST-Interim, a global monthly surface temperature dataset spanning 1854 to 2018," said Professor Li. She explained that the new dataset includes improved coverage of the Earth's surface, with 90 percent of the globe include from the 1950s onwards. "The CMST-Interim shows a significantly increased warming rate of the global surface temperature compared to the original dataset."

The experts report that existing datasets overestimated surface temperature anomalies prior to the 19th century, yet underestimated surface temperature anomalies in the 21st century. This explains the hiatus period that was found in recent studies. 

The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.springer.com/journal/376">Advances in Atmospheric Sciences</a>.

While tyrannosaurs were some of the largest predators of all time, a new study from the <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk/">University of Edinburgh</a> reveals that their babies were surprisingly small. Scientists have discovered that baby tyrannosaurs were no bigger than a medium-sized <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gifted-dogs-can-learn-words-after-hearing-them-four-times/">dog</a> when they took their first steps.

The study was focused on the fossils of tyrannosaur embryos. The remains are providing brand new insight into the early development of tyrannosaurs, which weighed as much as eight tons and grew up to 40 feet in length.

The team created 3D scans of two tiny one-inch dinosaur bones unearthed in Canada, including a jaw bone and a claw. 

The scans revealed that the delicate remains belonged to baby tyrannosaurs - cousins of Tyrannosaurus rex. The researchers discovered that the jaw bone contained distinctive tyrannosaur features, such as a pronounced chin.

Based on the size of the fossils, the baby tyrannosaurs were around three feet long when they hatched. Study lead author Dr. Greg Funston said the bones can teach us much about their size and appearance.

While tyrannosaur eggs have never been found, the new research indicates that they would have been around 17 inches long. This finding could aid efforts to recognize such eggs in the future and gain greater insights into the nesting habits of tyrannosaurs, explained the researchers.

The earliest developmental stages of tyrannosaurs remain a mystery to scientists. This is because the vast majority of tyrannosaur fossils that have been uncovered belonged to adults or older juveniles.

"These bones are the first window into the early lives of tyrannosaurs and they teach us about the size and appearance of baby tyrannosaurs," said Dr. Funston. "We now know that they would have been the largest hatchlings to ever emerge from eggs, and they would have looked remarkably like their parents - both good signs for finding more material in the future."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://cdnsciencepub.com/journal/cjes">Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences</a>.

In a breakthrough study from the <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/">University of Texas at Austin</a>, biologists are a giant step closer to making an inexpensive, renewable source of energy from a native North American <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/plants-cannot-keep-up-with-rising-co2-levels/">plant</a> called switchgrass. 

The researchers conducted an advanced genome analysis of switchgrass, which revealed genes that could ultimately be key to the widespread production of biofuels. 

By linking various switchgrass genes to specific climates, the experts have essentially developed a guide for breeding switchgrass that will perform optimally under current and future climate conditions across the United States. 

According to the researchers, optimizing switchgrass to grow efficiently in many different environments is key to ensuring its success as a biofuel feedstock.

Professor Tom Juenger has been on a mission to optimize switchgrass in his lab at UT Austin for more than a decade. When Professor Juenger analyzed samples provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's switchgrass stocks, he noticed a lack of diversity. 

Study co-author David Lowry was a postdoctoral researcher in Professor Juenger's lab when the research was initiated, and is now an assistant professor of Plant Biology at Michigan State University.

"Originally, a lot of these collections came from us driving around in a pickup truck with a shovel and digging up plants off the side of the road or in parks where we had permits," said Lowry.

Switchgrass is a warm-season perennial with deep roots that grows all over the country. It is an important component of tallgrass prairie habitats, growing up to 12 feet in some regions, and is also considered to be one of the most valuable plants for controlling soil erosion.

Furthermore, switchgrass has recently gained a lot of attention as a potential source of biofuel, which is critically needed to address the climate crisis. 

In collaboration with experts at the Hudson Alpha Institute for Biotechnology and the DOE Joint Genome Institute, the UT Austin team created 10 identical gardens in eight states. They grew clones of more than 1,000 switchgrass samples collected from across North America. 

The researchers assembled a reference genome sequence to compare the diversity among the samples. They documented which varieties thrived and where, matching sections of their DNA with traits that evolved over millennia in response to specific climates.

"We ended up finding three very distinct populations of switchgrass from three regions of the United States, all of which had their own sets of adaptations to climate," said study first author Alice MacQueen. "It means there are potentially multiple evolutionary paths available to match switchgrass plants to particular climates."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

Researchers have found evidence that women's menstrual cycles are synchronized with lunar cycles, including the intensity of moonlight and the moon's gravitational pull. The experts theorize that this synchronization was strongest in ancient times and has been widely lost due to modern lifestyles and exposure to artificial light at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crown-of-thorns-starfish-stay-up-all-night-to-overindulge/">night</a>.

Study lead author Charlotte Förster holds the Chair of Neurobiology and Genetics at the <a href="https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/university/">University of Würzburg</a> (JMU). "We know many animal species in which the reproductive behavior is synchronized with the lunar cycle to increase reproductive success," said Förster. 

Both menstrual and lunar cycles have a length of around 29.5 days, which indicates that there is a correlation. The idea is also supported by the results of previous research. For example, multiple older studies show that women who have menstrual cycles that are synced up with the moon have the greatest chances of becoming pregnant. 

In addition, two longitudinal studies found a significant connection between lunar cycles and birth rate, with an increase in births during the full moon and a decline in births during the new moon. Further evidence suggests that births are more likely to take place at night when there is a full moon, and in the daytime when there is a new moon. 

To investigate, Förster and her team analyzed the timing of the menstrual cycles of 22 women who had kept menstrual diaries for up to 32 years. "To our knowledge, this approach to analyzing this type of long-term data has not been used before." 

Förster explained that the moon exhibits three distinct cycles that periodically change the intensity of moonlight and its gravitational pull here on Earth. 

The researchers determined that all three lunar cycles influence the onset of menstruation in women. They found that moonlight seems to have the strongest effect, while gravitational forces of the moon also contribute.

Not all women follow the cycle of moonlight, and those that do only sync up for certain periods of time. Women under 35 years of age have menstrual cycles that follow the light and dark phases of the moon for an average of 25 percent of the time.

The connection between menstrual and lunar cycles decreases as women age, and also decreases with exposure to artificial light sources at night. For example, women who go to bed late and leave lights on longer do not show signs of synchronization with the moon.

The fact that humans follow the rhythm of gravity could explain why other cycles, such as when we fall asleep or how long we sleep, are temporarily influenced by a full moon or new moon. 

According to the researchers, the observations suggest that humans respond not only to rapid changes in gravity, like when we are thrown off balance, but also to slow, recurring gravitational changes. 

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Dublin, the capital and largest city of Ireland. Beyond its pub culture, Dublin is known as a modern culinary destination and a UNESCO City of Literature.



"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> features a visual dataset of.methane emissions from wetlands across the globe. Atmospheric methane levels have reached record highs in recent years, and wetlands are a major source of these emissions.&nbsp;



"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.stowers.org/">Stowers Institute for Medical Research</a> describes why experts are studying zebrafish to gain a better understanding of how the immune system responds to injury. Zebrafish have the ability to repair and regenerate organs.



“Organ regeneration offers an exciting opportunity for studying the immune system and to inquire why some species can regenerate organs like the heart or missing limbs while others like humans cannot,” explained Dr. Tatjana Piotrowski.



Zebrafish sensory organ hair cells are an ideal system to investigate the pathways and cell types involved in regeneration since they are easily destroyed with antibiotics and begin regenerating within five hours. This enabled the researchers to identify the exact timing and genetic programs for each anti-inflammatory macrophage activation state.&nbsp;



“Our hypothesis is that human macrophages do not receive the proper chemical activation 'cocktail' to instruct pro-regenerative processes,” said Dr. Nicolas Denans. “Identifying the molecular recipe of macrophage activation in zebrafish may one day enable us to design regenerative immunotherapies in humans.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



“The new evidence is a valuable resource for comparative studies on the genetic programs involved in macrophage-mediated repair and regeneration. In other words, different types of injuries may induce different kinds of inflammatory responses. We want to decipher whether this 'language' is universal or if there are a variety of dialects."

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.
