Astronomers recently discovered the biggest pair of black hole jets ever observed and named this system Porphyrion. Imagine something so massive that it lines up 140 Milky Way galaxies back to back. Martijn Oei is a <a href="https://www.caltech.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Caltech</a> postdoctoral scholar with a flair for digging into the mysteries of the universe. His recent work published in a new Nature paper has everyone talking.



Oei and his team discovered this enormous pair of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/awakening-of-a-black-hole-witnessed-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black hole</a> jets named Porphyrion. Derived from Greek mythology, Porphyrion is a fitting moniker for a structure with such colossal proportions.



This jet megastructure not only spans 23 million light-years in total length, but it also dates back to when our universe was just 6.3 billion years old.

That's less than half its present age of 13.8 billion years. To put that into perspective, it's like the universe was still in its adolescence.



These ferocious outflows of energy, with a total power output equivalent to trillions of suns, emanate from a supermassive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/directly-detecting-dark-matter-primordial-black-holes-simple-as-monitoring-mars-orbit/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black hole</a> at the heart of a distant galaxy. 



Before Porphyrion, the record-holder for the largest jet system was Alcyoneus, another giant named after a figure in Greek mythology. 



Alcyoneus, discovered in 2022 by the same team, measures about the equivalent of 100 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/newly-discovered-stars-milky-way-are-old-as-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Milky Ways</a>. Comparatively, the Centaurus A jets, the closest major jet system to Earth, only spans 10 Milky Ways.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shaking-up-the-neighborhood">Shaking up the neighborhood</h2>



What makes Porphyrion's discovery more groundbreaking is the implications it holds for our understanding of galaxy formation. 



Co-author George Djorgovski, professor of astronomy and data science at <a href="https://www.caltech.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Caltech</a>, provided some insights on this.



"Astronomers believe that galaxies and their central black holes co-evolve, and one key aspect of this is that jets can spread huge amounts of energy that affect the growth of their host galaxies and other galaxies near them,” he says. "This discovery shows that their effects can extend much farther out than we thought."



But Porphyrion's scale reveals that the effects of these jets may extend far beyond our previous understanding.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scanning-the-cosmos-and-black-hole-jets">Scanning the cosmos and black hole jets</h2>



The discovery of Porphyrion is part of a larger sky survey, which unveiled a staggering number of similar structures -- over 10,000.



This massive population of gargantuan <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/black-holes-captured-redirecting-jets-beams-like-death-star-weapon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jets</a> was found using Europe's <a href="https://www.astron.nl/telescopes/lofar/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LOFAR</a> (LOw Frequency ARray) radio telescope.



"Giant jets were known before we started the campaign, but we had no idea that there would turn out to be so many," says Martin Hardcastle, second author of the study and a professor of astrophysics at the <a href="https://www.herts.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Hertfordshire</a> in England. 



"Usually when we get a new observational capability, such as LOFAR's combination of wide field of view and very high sensitivity to extended structures, we find something new, but it was still very exciting to see so many of these objects emerging."



The origins of Porphyrion took the team across continents and observatories. They used the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in India and supplementary data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. 



The observations pointed the team to a hefty galaxy, about 10 times more massive than our Milky Way, as the birthplace of Porphyrion.

Porphyrion resides a mind-boggling 7.5 billion light-years from Earth. Its far-off residency and its emergence from a radiative-mode black hole suggest that it may not be a lone titan, but the harbinger of countless colossal jets yet to be discovered. 



Oei suggests as much, saying, "We may be looking at the tip of the iceberg."



There are still many unanswered questions surrounding these giant black hole jet systems. How do they extend so far and get so big without destabilizing? 



"Martijn's work has shown us that there isn't anything particularly special about the environments of these giant sources that causes them to reach those large sizes," says Hardcastle, who is an expert in the physics of black hole jets. 



"My interpretation is that we need an unusually long-lived and stable accretion event around the central, supermassive black hole to allow it to be active for so long -- about a billion years -- and to ensure that the jets keep pointing in the same direction over all of that time. What we're learning from the large number of giants is that this must be a relatively common occurrence," Hardcastle concluded.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surrounding-influence-and-magnetism">Surrounding influence and magnetism</h2>



How do they influence their surroundings? And perhaps most intriguingly, have these giant jets spread magnetism throughout the cosmos?



"We know magnetism pervades the cosmic web, then makes its way into galaxies and stars, and eventually to planets, but the question is: Where does it start?" Oei rightly says.



This research is the exciting beginning of a new chapter in our understanding of the universe. With the discovery of Porphyrion, we're reminded that we still have a lot to uncover about the mysteries of the cosmos. Even a sky full of stars is just the beginning.

An ancient method of heat storage may hold the key to a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nature-inspires-solutions-for-a-sustainable-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sustainable future</a> in clean energy, according to a recent study. 



This ingenious technology, dating back to the Bronze Age, could offer an efficient and cost-effective way to achieve the United Nations' climate goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clean-energy-storage-with-firebricks">Clean energy storage with firebricks</h2>



The technique in question involves the use of specially assembled heat-absorbing bricks known as firebricks.



These bricks are stacked in an insulated container, storing heat generated by solar or wind power at temperatures required for industrial processes. 



The reserved heat can be released when necessary by allowing air to flow through channels in the firebrick stacks.



It’s a simple yet potent solution that permits industries like cement, steel, glass, and paper manufacturers to function on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/underground-water-could-be-a-great-source-of-renewable-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">renewable energy</a> when wind and sunlight aren't available. This technique would allow for a seamless switch to cleaner energy sources.



This concept of thermal energy storage is not entirely new and several companies have already begun commercializing it for industrial heat storage.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bronze-age-technology">Bronze Age technology</h2>



The firebricks used are crafted from similar materials that lined the kilns and furnaces in the primitive age. The real innovation lies in the combination and proportion of these materials, optimized to store heat effectively instead of merely insulating.



While traditional batteries store electricity from renewable sources and produce heat on demand, firebricks offer a unique advantage.



Study lead author Mark Z. Jacobson is a professor of civil and environmental engineering in the <a href="https://sustainability.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability</a> and School of Engineering.



"The difference between firebrick storage and battery storage is that the firebricks store heat rather than electricity and are one-tenth the cost of batteries. The materials are simple too, basically just the components of dirt," noted Jacobson.



Most industrial processes require high-temperature heat. For instance, cement production requires temperatures of at least 1,300 degrees Celsius, while glass, iron, and steelmaking need 1,000 degrees Celsius or higher.



Around 17% of all global carbon dioxide emissions could be traced back to the burning of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/un-report-current-fossil-fuel-plans-will-shatter-1-5c-climate-goal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossil fuels</a> for producing heat for these industrial processes. 



Therefore, generating industrial heat from renewable sources could significantly reduce these emissions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-optimizing-energy-storage">Optimizing energy storage </h2>



Focusing on storing energy in the form that is closest to its end use can minimize conversion inefficiencies. 



The concept is as straightforward as storing hot water for hot showers and ice for cold drinks. In this case, the study suggested: "If you need heat for industry, store it in firebricks."



The researchers explored the impact of using firebricks to store most of the industrial heat in a futuristic scenario where every country has shifted to renewable energy sources like wind, geothermal, hydropower, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-tech-melts-steel-concrete-1800-degrees-heat-solar-power-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar</a>. 



The research revealed that firebricks could expedite this transition at a lower cost, creating benefits for health, climate, jobs, and energy security.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-cleaner-future-with-clean-energy">A cleaner future with clean energy</h2>



In addition to benefiting the environment, accelerating the transition to clean energy also positively impacts human health.



Previous studies have revealed that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-from-fossil-fuels-kills-5-million-people-each-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollution from burning fossil fuels</a> causes millions of premature deaths each year. 



"Every bit of combustion fuels we replace with electricity reduces that air pollution," said Jacobson, indicating the urgent need to find cost-effective ways to hasten this transition.



Enlivened by a desire to discover effective, rapid solutions, Jacobson turned his attention to firebricks. He believes that a cost-saving approach would be embraced more readily and hence, expedite the world's transition to cleaner renewables.



The potential impact of this Bronze Age technology is vast, promising substantial benefits at low costs, from reducing air-pollution mortality to facilitating a smoother shift to clean energy.

As we explore the potential of firebricks, it's essential to leverage modern technology to enhance these ancient techniques. Innovations like advanced composites and nano-coatings can improve heat storage efficiency.

For example, smart sensors can monitor temperatures in real-time, ensuring efficient heat storage and release. This data-driven approach enables manufacturers to align production with renewable energy availability.



Educating industry stakeholders and demonstrating the benefits of firebrick technology through workshops and pilot programs can encourage adoption, bridging the gap between ancient wisdom and modern solutions for a cleaner, sustainable future.

This plan is supported by an innovative tool designed to optimize reduction efforts and help mitigate the accelerating effects of climate change.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-methane-the-unsung-villain">Methane: The unsung villain</h2>



Although <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-carbon-dioxide-emissions-hit-a-record-high-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon dioxide</a> typically steals the spotlight in climate change discussions, methane has quietly contributed to approximately half of the observed global warming, despite being less frequently discussed. 



Unfortunately, methane emissions continue to rise at worrying speeds, exacerbating the urgency of the climate crisis. 



While the world has predominantly focused on reducing carbon dioxide, it's time to broaden our efforts and turn our attention to these other potent contributors, which have been underestimated in their impact on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/limiting-global-warming-to-1-5-degrees-celsius-would-save-billions-of-lives/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a>.



Addressing this issue requires a comprehensive approach that includes both carbon dioxide and methane mitigation strategies to effectively combat climate change.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-three-step-action-plan">Three-step action plan</h2>



The Duke team has highlighted three critical strategies to address methane emissions. These findings are backed by extensive research involving satellite remote sensing data, reported emissions, and the interaction of abatement options with market forces.



The first step revolves around reducing methane emissions. The increasing emissions, driven by fossil fuel production and rising emissions from wetlands, need to be curtailed immediately.



In addition, there is an urgent need for international coordination to address both methane and carbon dioxide emissions. Cutting carbon dioxide alone will not halt global warming soon enough, and solely reducing methane merely postpones the inevitable.



Furthermore, it is vital to incentivize and enforce methane abatement. A coordinated, effective approach will yield significant results in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/abandoned-farmland-can-be-used-for-climate-change-mitigation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change mitigation</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cost-vs-benefit-of-methane-mitigation">Cost vs. benefit of methane mitigation</h2>



The proposed measures promise to be enormously beneficial, both economically and environmentally. 



For each ton of methane emitted in 2020, the estimated damages were between US $470-1,700. However, factoring in the impact on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-will-increase-dramatically-in-a-hotter-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air pollution</a> and human health, the actual cost could escalate up to $7,000 per ton.



The positive impact of mitigation efforts significantly outweighs the costs involved. Many options for reducing emissions yield net economic gains, even before considering the environmental benefits.



Moreover, since methane does not linger in the atmosphere for the long-term, reductions in emissions take effect more swiftly.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-equipping-ourselves-for-the-job">Equipping ourselves for the job</h2>



Fighting methane emissions might require different approaches depending on a country's industries and the measures previously implemented.



That's why the authors of this landmark study have created an online tool to identify the most effective measures for reducing emissions in various countries.



For large fossil fuel producers, the most effective measures may be regulating production, incentivizing methane capture, or charging companies for emissions. For others, focusing on emissions from landfills could offer the most significant rewards.

For the first time in history, scientists have identified and characterized the human odorant receptor for geosmin. The team was led by Dietmar Krautwurst from the Leibniz Institute for Food Systems Biology at the <a href="https://www.tum.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Munich</a>, 



The findings provide a deepened understanding of the complex mechanisms by which we perceive this familiar and evocative <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-scents-linked-to-improved-health-and-well-being/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scent</a>.



Geosmin is not merely a sensory phenomenon; it plays a significant role in our environment. It is produced by microorganisms in the soil and found in various plants, such as cactus flowers and red beets.



The odorous compound triggers a range of reactions in different creatures and serves as a chemical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smell-of-wet-soil-signals-danger-to-bacteria-eating-worms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">signaling substance</a>. For instance, its smell warns fruit flies of spoiled food, and it draws camels to water-rich areas.



"This shows that geosmin acts as a chemical signaling substance in the animal kingdom and certainly also in humans," explained study first author from the Leibniz Institute.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-scent-s-impact-on-food-quality">The scent's impact on food quality</h2>



While geosmin's aroma enhances the sensory appeal of some foods like red beets, its presence in others can be problematic. 



Stephanie Frank, a food chemist at the Leibniz Institute, underscores its adverse influence on the sensory quality and acceptance of several foods, including fish, beans, cocoa, water, wine, and grape juice. 



Astonishingly, humans can detect its odor in water at low concentrations, roughly equivalent to a teaspoon of geosmin in 200 Olympic swimming pools' worth of water.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-odorant-receptor-for-geosmin">The odorant receptor for geosmin</h2>



Despite geosmin's known existence since 1965 and its significance in food production, the particular <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-story-behind-our-sense-of-smell-is-coming-into-focus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">odorant receptor</a> used by humans to perceive this compound remained a mystery - until now.



A team of researchers led by Dietmar Krautwurst embarked on a bidirectional receptor screening and successfully identified and characterized the corresponding receptor.



Surprisingly, out of the 616 human olfactory receptor variants they tested, only one - the OR11A1 receptor - responded to geosmin at physiologically relevant concentrations.



Furthermore, the experts explored whether this receptor responds to other significant food odorants.



Out of 177 substances tested, only the earthy-smelling 2-ethylfenchol (also of microbial origin), could significantly activate the receptor.

Dietmar Krautwurst suggests that their recent findings, which emphasize the biological relevance of geosmin, could pave the way for the development of innovative detection systems.

Birds may flock together, but it turns out great white sharks don't do the same. A group of international scientists have delved into a world-first genome analysis of global great white shark populations. 



Their findings expose a surprising truth: great white sharks separated into three <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/newborn-great-white-shark-spotted-for-the-first-time-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">distinct population</a> groups up to 200,000 years ago and have stuck pretty much with their own kind since.



Meet the great white's three clans: a southern Pacific Ocean group (also known lovingly as the Indo-Pacific crowd), a northern Pacific Ocean population, and a group that toothily patrol the North Atlantic and Mediterranean.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-great-white-shark-lineage">Great white shark lineage</h2>



Dr. Catherine Jones, leading this shark crusade from the <a href="https://www.abdn.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Aberdeen</a>, teamed up with researchers from around the world, including collaborators from the <a href="https://ghriresearch.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Guy Harvey Research Institute</a>, the <a href="http://www.medsharks.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MedSharks project</a>, and <a href="https://www.oceans-research.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oceans Research Institute</a>. 



They discovered that these three geographic lineages stick to their lanes and seldom date outside their group.



"At the end of the Penultimate Ice Age -- between 100,000 to 200,000 years ago -- white shark populations appear to have divided into three discrete lineages which seldom interbreed," explains Dr. Jones.



"This separation can still be observed today as modern major ocean currents seem to act as boundaries of the areas occupied by each group."



This tribal behavior among our finned friends isn't just an intriguing aquatic soap opera; it ruffles the waters of conservation efforts. 



Since each lineage relies on a smaller number of the species, they are at greater risk of extinction than we previously thought. Furthermore, any potential 'shortfalls' in one group are unlikely to be made up by the other two.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conservation-conundrum">Conservation conundrum</h2>



Why is this such a big deal, you ask? Well, if the Mediterranean's distinct group checks out, they're not just an extinct group of sharks. That’s a unique genetic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deepwater-desperation-the-race-to-save-sharks-and-rays/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diversity</a> forever lost in the deep blue.



"Although not widely appreciated, man's future is increasingly bound up with that of white sharks," added Professor Les Noble, of Aquatic Biosciences at <a href="https://www.nord.no/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nord University</a>.



As top predators, these sharks play a crucial role in maintaining the diversity and health of local marine ecosystems. Over the past 50 years, we have witnessed white shark abundance almost halved, and they are now recognized as critically endangered in Europe.



This issue becomes even more tangled when considering the potential changes in strength and direction of major ocean currents predicted for the next 50 years.



"The lack of interbreeding suggests offspring from cross-lineage matings may not be viable. Should recent forecasts of changes in major ocean currents be accurate, breakdown of these geographic boundaries between lineages may allow more unproductive matings, further endangering white shark populations and the diversity, health, and productivity of ocean ecosystems," Galice Hoarau, Professor of Molecular Ecology at Nord University notes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conserving-great-white-shark">Conserving Great white shark</h2>



How can we navigate these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/juvenile-great-white-sharks-prefer-shallow-coastal-waters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">troubled waters</a>? With innovative conservation strategies, according to our shark-loving scientists. 



A better understanding of the distribution and health of these distinct groups is the raft we need to float these efforts. But to keep these magnificent creatures from spiraling into the depths of extinction, we'll need to take swift action.



"It has long been considered that sharks lost from one area would be compensated for with the movement and matings of sharks from other locations. Our findings suggest this is clearly unlikely," warns Dr. Jones. 



Couple this with the pressures of bycatch fishing, depleting food reserves, pollution, and poaching, and it's clear we're swimming against the tide here.



But if we can fight off these threats, we just might keep these kings and queens of the ocean around for future generations to admire.

The research conducted by these esteemed institutions not only sheds light on the unique behavior of great white sharks, but also highlights the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/migratory-behaviors-are-shaped-by-experience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">apex predators</a>. 



With their crucial role in maintaining marine ecosystems and their critical endangerment status, it is clear that immediate action must be taken to preserve these magnificent creatures.

Now, AI is taking another step forward, thanks to research conducted by experts from the <a href="https://global.toho-u.ac.jp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Toho University School of Medicine</a> in Tokyo, Japan.



The researchers have developed an advanced AI model that could revolutionize the diagnosis of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bulls-are-helping-solve-the-mysteries-of-male-infertility/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">male infertility</a>, making the process not only more accessible but also less invasive and potentially more accurate.



This innovation marks a promising leap forward in reproductive health, offering new hope to many who face challenges in this area.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-infertility-issue">The infertility issue</h2>



The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about half of all <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-sperm-structure-offers-new-insights-on-infertility/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">infertility</a> cases can be attributed to the male partner, highlighting the significant role men play in reproductive challenges. 



Traditionally, semen analysis has been the standard diagnostic tool for assessing male fertility. However, this procedure isn't readily available at all medical facilities, particularly in regions with limited healthcare resources.



Moreover, it's a high-threshold procedure that can be invasive and uncomfortable, potentially deterring some men from seeking help and undergoing testing. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-ai-breakthrough">The AI breakthrough</h2>



Enter Professor Hideyuki Kobayashi and his innovative team from the Department of Urology at Toho University.



They have made a groundbreaking advancement by developing an AI model capable of predicting male infertility risk using only a simple <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/simple-blood-test-can-now-predict-risk-of-heart-attack-within-six-months/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">blood test</a>. That's right - no semen analysis required.



This remarkable achievement not only simplifies the diagnostic process but also makes it more comfortable and accessible for men, potentially encouraging more individuals to seek evaluation and treatment. 



The new model marks a significant step forward in the field of reproductive medicine, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional diagnostic methods.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-science-behind-the-tech">The science behind the tech</h2>



The AI model is based on data from 3,662 patients and has an accuracy rate of approximately 74 percent.



In particular, the model was able to predict non-obstructive azoospermia, the most severe form of infertility, with 100 percent accuracy. 



The team used clinical data from these men, who had undergone tests from 2011 to 2020. The AI model analyzed the hormone levels of LH, FSH, PRL, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/men-with-low-testosterone-have-a-higher-risk-of-mortality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">testosterone</a>, and E2, replacing the semen analysis' traditional parameters.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-validating-the-ai-model">Validating the AI model</h2>



The model didn't just stay in the lab; it underwent rigorous validation to ensure its practical application. The team further tested this technology using clinical data from 2021 and 2022, achieving accuracy rates of 58 and 68 percent, respectively.



Impressively, the model's prediction of non-obstructive azoospermia, the most severe form of male infertility, remained 100 percent accurate throughout these trials.



This consistent accuracy highlights the model's potential reliability and effectiveness in real-world clinical settings, offering a promising tool for early and accurate diagnosis.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-male-fertility-testing">The future of male fertility testing</h2>



The AI model is intended to act as a primary screening tool before semen analysis. While it's not a replacement for the traditional method, it presents a more accessible option, especially in facilities not specializing in infertility treatment.



"The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/powerful-ai-algorithm-can-predict-a-persons-attitude-towards-vaccines/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI prediction model</a> used in this study was particularly accurate in predicting non-obstructive azoospermia, which is a severe form of azoospermia," said Professor Kobayashi.



"When the prediction model detects abnormal values, since patients may possibly have non-obstructive azoospermia, this should be a trigger for them to undergo detailed testing at a specialist infertility clinic and receive appropriate treatment."



Through their partnership with CreaTact Inc., the team hopes to develop an original commercial AI prediction model that could be used in clinics and health checkup centers, making infertility testing more accessible and less daunting.

Male infertility screening will be drastically improved with AI

We've all learned that animals first began their Earthly journey around 635 million years ago. It's a number well-ensconced in our collective scientific understanding. But new research suggests that the timeline of complex life may need a serious rethink.



A recent study led by an international team of scientists from <a href="https://www.cardiff.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cardiff University</a> points to a completely different story. They contend that complex life on Earth began a whopping 1.5 billion years earlier than what was previously believed.



This is not merely a correction of a few million years; it's a massive leap into the past that fundamentally alters our understanding of life's evolutionary timeline.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovering-ancient-complex-life">Discovering ancient complex life</h2>



The nerve center of this discovery is the Franceville Basin near Gabon, located on the Atlantic coast of Central Africa. It was here that the scientists found evidence of a prehistoric ecosystem housing the very first experiments in complex <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sulfur-may-have-played-key-role-origin-of-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biological evolution</a>.



Such findings were presented in the study, titled "Hydrothermal seawater eutrophication triggered local macrobiological experimentation in the 2100 Ma Paleoproterozoic Francevillian sub-basin."



Dr. Ernest Chi Fru, the paper's lead author at Cardiff University's School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, played a vital role in this exploration. He explained that the discovery is based on the availability of phosphorus in the environment, a factor recognized as crucial for the evolution of life on Earth.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finding-the-missing-links">Finding the missing links</h2>



Until now, our understanding was that an increase in marine phosphorus and seawater oxygen concentrations was linked to an episode of biological evolution around 635 million years ago. However, Dr. Chi Fru's findings bring a much earlier episode into focus, dating back 2.1 billion years.



"We already know that increases in marine phosphorus and seawater oxygen concentrations are linked to an episode of biological evolution around 635 million years ago. Our study adds another, much earlier episode into the record, 2.1 billion years ago," Chi Fru stated.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-big-picture">The big picture</h2>



This discovery doesn't just add another episode to the evolutionary timeline. It brings to light a series of processes that could have potentially triggered the evolution of large-sized fossils of macroorganisms much earlier than we anticipated.



These large-sized fossils, whose validity has been widely debated in the scientific community, are the earliest of their kind in the geologic record.



The Cardiff-led team's geochemical analysis of the marine sedimentary rocks deposited 2.1 billion years ago offers new insights into this much-disputed collection of unusually large-sized fossils in the Francevillian basin.



Dr. Chi Fru further clarified that the underwater volcanoes, which appeared after the collision of the Congo and São Francisco cratons, might have created a nutrient-rich shallow marine inland sea. 



This environment could have supported abundant cyanobacterial photosynthesis over an extended period of time, leading to the oxygenation of local seawater and the generation of a large food resource.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-complex-life">Evolution of complex life</h2>



According to the researchers, their study hints towards a two-step evolution of complex life on Earth. The first followed the initial rise in atmospheric oxygen content 2.1 billion years ago, and the second followed a second rise in atmospheric oxygen levels some 1.5 billion years later.



While the first attempt didn't seem to take off on a global scale, the second attempt could be responsible for the animal biodiversity we see on Earth today.



The team is now focused on delving deeper into the environmental conditions that led to the emergence of these enigmatic fossils.



What does this mean for our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forgotten-chemical-reactions-offer-clues-to-lifes-origins/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">understanding of life on Earth</a>? Well, only time (and much more research) will tell. But for now, we can marvel at the fact that our planet was experimenting with complex life forms far earlier than we ever imagined!



This research has important implications, encouraging us to reconsider our understanding of complex life <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unraveling-the-story-of-early-animal-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolution</a>. It suggests that the development of multicellularity might have occurred due to different environmental pressures than we thought.

Complex life emerged 1.5 billion years earlier than we thought

In an intriguing development that enhances our understanding of Mercury, researchers from China and Belgium have unveiled a remarkable secret residing deep within the planet. Their study indicates that Mercury's core-mantle boundary (CMB) may possess a diamond layer that extends up to 18 kilometers (11 miles) thick.



What might the existence of this diamond layer reveal about Mercury's geological history and the processes that shape our solar system?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mercury-the-enigmatic-inner-planet">Mercury: The enigmatic inner planet</h2>



This mind-boggling research was spearheaded by Dr. Yanhao Lin from the Center for High Pressure Science and Technology Advanced Research (<a href="http://www.hpstar.ac.cn/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HPSTAR</a>) in Beijing.



Mercury, the smallest and innermost planet in our solar system, continues to intrigue scientists with its distinct characteristics and extreme conditions.



Its dark, cratered surface and dense metallic core have been the focus of extensive research, particularly through NASA's <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/messenger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MESSENGER spacecraft</a>, which orbited Mercury from 2011 to 2015.



This mission uncovered remarkable insights into the planet's composition and history. Among the most thought-provoking discoveries was the presence of significant amounts of graphite, a form of carbon, on Mercury’s surface.



This finding hints at a carbon-rich past that may provide valuable clues about the planet's formation and evolution.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-rich-past">Carbon-rich past</h2>



Previous missions had suggested that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/is-there-life-on-mercury-possibly-in-the-planets-craters-study-reveals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mercury's surface graphite</a> came from an ancient layer that floated up from a molten surface layer or magma ocean.



As Mercury cooled, this carbon formed a graphite crust. However, Dr. Lin and his team challenged the assumption that graphite was the only carbon-bearing phase during Mercury's magma ocean crystallization.



Dr. Lin explained, "Many years ago, I noticed that Mercury's extremely high carbon content might have significant implications. It made me realize that something special probably happened within its interior."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mercury-s-diamond-interior">Mercury’s diamond interior</h2>



To investigate, the researchers recreated the conditions of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planet-mercury-is-still-shrinking-and-now-has-more-wrinkles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mercury's interior</a> using high-pressure and temperature experiments combined with thermodynamic modeling. 



They used synthetic silicate to mimic Mercury's mantle composition, achieving pressure levels up to 7 Giga Pascals (GPa), about seven times the pressure found at the deepest parts of the Mariana Trench.



"We use the large-volume press to mimic the high-temperature and high-pressure conditions of Mercury's core-mantle boundary and combine it with the geophysical models and thermodynamic calculations," said Dr. Lin.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diamonds-under-mercury-s-interior-pressure">Diamonds under Mercury's interior pressure</h2>



Under these extreme conditions, the team studied how minerals in Mercury's interior melt and reach equilibrium phases, focusing on graphite and diamond. 



They also analyzed the chemical composition of their experimental samples. The results were surprising.



By integrating experimental data with geophysical simulations, the researchers estimated Mercury's CMB pressure at around 5.575 GPa. At roughly 11% sulfur content, they observed a significant 358 Kelvin temperature change in Mercury's magma ocean. 



This led them to propose that while graphite was the dominant carbon phase during the magma ocean crystallization, the crystallization of the core might have led to the formation of a diamond layer at the CMB.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sulfur-and-mercury-s-magnetic-field">Sulfur and Mercury's magnetic field</h2>



"Sulfur lowers the liquidus of Mercury's magma ocean. If the diamond forms in the magma ocean, it can sink to the bottom and be deposited at the CMB. On the other hand, sulfur also helps the formation of an iron sulfide layer at the CMB, which is related to carbon content during planetary differentiation," explained Dr. Lin.



Planetary differentiation refers to how a planet's interior becomes structured, with heavier minerals sinking to the core and lighter minerals rising to the crust.



One of the most intriguing implications of these findings is for Mercury's magnetic field, which is surprisingly strong for such a small planet.



"Carbon from the molten core becomes oversaturated as it cools, forming diamond and floating to the CMB. Diamond's high thermal conductivity helps transfer heat effectively from the core to the mantle, causing temperature stratification and convection change in Mercury's liquid outer core, and thus affecting the generation of its magnetic field," said Dr. Lin.



In simpler terms, the heat transfer from the core to the mantle influences temperature gradients and convection in Mercury's liquid outer core, impacting its magnetic field generation.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mercury-diamonds-and-future-exploration">Mercury, diamonds, and future exploration</h2>



Dr. Lin also pointed out the broader implications of this study for our understanding of other terrestrial planets.



"It also could be relevant to the understanding of other terrestrial planets, especially those with similar sizes and compositions. The processes that led to the formation of a diamond layer on Mercury might also have occurred on other planets, potentially leaving similar signatures," he concluded.



This discovery about Mercury's diamond layer enriches our knowledge and ignites curiosity about the hidden wonders of our solar system. 



So, what does this mean for us? Mercury, often overshadowed by larger planets, holds secrets that challenge our understanding of planetary formation and behavior.



The full study was published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-49305-x" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Communications</a>.

That's right, the count has leaped from about 40 to over 140!

In Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, and Myanmar, these big cats are hanging on by a thread, often in small or isolated populations, held at bay by hunting and loss of habitat.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-destined-to-save-thailand-tigers">Destined to save Thailand tigers</h2>



Enter Pornkamol Jornburom, director of WCS Thailand, and a defiant beacon of hope for these endangered creatures. She believes the credit for this remarkable recovery goes to Thailand's Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, (DNP).



They have executed rigorous patrolling regimes, forming a protective shield around the tigers and their habitat from poachers and deforestation.



"We see very strong correlations between better law enforcement and the recovery of tigers. Prior to this, illegal hunting and logging were rife in WEFCOM, and tigers were on a path toward extinction. Here, as elsewhere in Asia, good enforcement is the cornerstone of the tiger recovery process," explained Jornburom.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-coast-is-clear">The coast is clear</h2>



The DNP's tireless work of more than two decades, coupled with WCS and the Thai government's meticulous monitoring, were crucial in tracking the success of these patrols. Started in 2004, the team installed hundreds of cameras to photograph the tigers, effectively using their unique stripe patterns to monitor the population's health.



The work was led by Thailand DNP senior scientist Somphot Duangchantrasiri. "We believe this is a good example of how to set up and maintain a strong, independent monitoring program that brings credibility to tiger recovery efforts."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-than-just-a-tiger-tale">More than just a tiger tale</h2>



Any <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-wildlife-day-using-technology-to-protect-our-natural-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">thriving ecosystem</a> is a balanced ecosystem. So, apex predators, the state of tigers is a reflection of the overall health of their habitat.



The team also monitored the positive ripple effects of their rigorous patrolling. Notably, they reported recovery in prey populations, like the banteng, a species of endangered wild cattle.



Apinya Saisamornin is an expert who specializes in tiger prey at the Wildlife Conservation Society and Kasetsart University in Bangkok.



"Tigers can't exist in the wild without a healthy abundance of prey species. Our study showed a doubling in numbers of both sambar (a large, elk-like deer) and banteng, the key prey species for tigers in WEFCOM. Without the recovery of prey, tiger numbers could not have grown as large as they did," noted Saisamornin.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-triumph-but-only-the-beginning">A triumph, but only the beginning</h2>



All these numbers stitch together a heartening tapestry of ecosystem-wide recovery. 



"The news out of Thailand of a 250% increase in tiger numbers over 15 years is proof that the tiger can be saved, but it takes long-term commitment on focused interventions," said Dale Miquelle, a senior tiger conservationist at WCS.



"Recovery efforts are important not only for tigers - these same forests protect most of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/effective-conservation-efforts-key-to-saving-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">terrestrial biodiversity</a> of Asia, provide ecosystem services for millions of people, and buffer the impacts of climate change by retaining healthy forested ecosystems."

With its cutting-edge sonar, Ran has spent 27 days weaving through the underbelly of the Dotson Ice Shelf, covering a staggering 1000 kilometers, and revealing never-before-seen details about these icy expanses.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antarctic-dotson-ice-shelf-melt">Antarctic Dotson Ice Shelf melt</h2>



The Dotson Ice Shelf in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-ice-loss-increases-snowfall-over-west-antarctica/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">West Antarctica</a> is a significant player in the discussion about future sea levels. 



Far from being flat, passive expanses of ice, these shelves are dynamic, evolving entities. They're thick bodies of glacial ice sustained by land-based glaciers. 



Uniquely, these ice shelves float atop the sea -- and beneath them are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/thousands-of-meteorites-vanish-in-antarctica-due-to-melting-ice/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice shelf cavities</a>.



One such cavity was the focus of Ran's recent mission - a survey that has unlocked new secrets about the structures and melting patterns of these ice shelves. 



The Dotson Ice Shelf, in particular, plays a crucial role in the West Antarctic ice sheet's overall stability and potential future sea level rise due to its size and location.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-lurks-beneath-antarctica-s-ice">What lurks beneath Antarctica's ice</h2>



The glacial exploration yielded expected results: the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/this-natural-process-is-making-antarcticas-ice-melt-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice melted faster</a> where strong underwater currents erode its base. 



But what was surprising was the irregularity of the base itself. 



Instead of the smooth surface expected, the underwater landscape was reminiscent of peaks, valleys, plateaus and formations akin to sand dunes.

The team believes these features may have been sculpted by flowing water under the influence of Earth’s rotation. 



This unexpected discovery has challenged previous scientific assumptions, sparking new questions about the complex mechanisms of glacier melting.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-perspective-on-antarctic-melt">Unique perspective on Antarctic melt</h2>



"By navigating the submersible into the cavity, we were able to get high-resolution maps of the ice underside. It's a bit like seeing the back of the moon for the first time," said lead author Anna Wåhlin, Professor of Oceanography at the <a href="https://www.gu.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Gothenburg</a> in Sweden.

This exploration was part of the <a href="https://thwaitesglacier.org/projects/tarsan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TARSAN project</a>, a collaborative endeavor studying the atmospheric and oceanic processes influencing the behavior of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/doomsday-glacier-seems-to-have-lost-its-ability-to-recover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Thwaites "doomsday glacier"</a> and Dotson Ice Shelves.



While the project expected to gather data, the spectacle they discovered was beyond their wildest dreams.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cracks-swirls-and-patterns">Cracks, swirls and patterns</h2>



Upon receiving the first images from beneath the ice shelf, the researchers were thrilled yet baffled. 



The textures and patterns they saw were unexpected, resembling works of art more than naturally occurring formations. 



Intrigued by these findings, the team brainstormed to understand the forces behind them.



As they delved deeper, they found a series of firsts - a glimpse, for the first time, into the processes that melt the underside of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-threat-lurking-in-antarcticas-ice-shelves/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice shelves</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-melting-antarctic-ice-shelves">Melting Antarctic ice shelves</h2>



While these ice shelves floating on the sea may not directly affect sea levels when they melt, the repercussions are more indirect. 



As these ice shelves melt, the land-based <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/peru-has-lost-over-half-of-its-glaciers-in-six-decades/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glaciers</a> they feed flow faster and destabilize, leading to a rise in sea levels.



The newly uncovered data will significantly help ice modelers reduce the uncertainties in future sea level predictions.



Despite a wealth of new discoveries, the exploration also revealed numerous processes still left to understand in future expeditions. 



Existing models could not explain the complex patterns discovered. Continued collaborative study, combining remote sensing with oceanographic field data, is needed to understand the changes taking place.



"For us, it's not just a new discovery, but also a wake-up call that many previous assumptions about melting of glacier undersides are falling short," elucidates Prof Wåhlin.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-antarctic-ice-melt">Future of Antarctic ice melt</h2>



The research expedition planned to repeat the survey in January 2024, eager to document any changes. Unfortunately, the team could only complete one dive before Ran disappeared under the ice.



"Although we got valuable data back, we did not get all we had hoped for," said Prof Wåhlin. 



Despite the setback, the team remains optimistic and hopeful of continuing this crucial research.

The initial step taken by the research team involved the establishment of a global network of 74 test plots, all within 40 mature, undisturbed broadleaved forests.&nbsp;



Green leaves and leaf litters in these forests were analyzed for concentrations of elements such as carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and silica.&nbsp;



The team also took into account leaf production, insect feeding habits, and other shifts in nutrient levels.

The stratosphere and the ground are two areas in the atmosphere influenced by the gas we know as ozone.&nbsp;The stratosphere, which sits high above us, relies on ozone to protect Earth and its humans from the harsh&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ozone-hole-exposes-wildlife-to-harmful-uv-radiation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ultraviolet rays</a>&nbsp;of the sun. At ground level, this colorless gas can cause noticeable health issues.&nbsp;



But there's a zone in between these two, the upper troposphere, where ozone acts as a potent&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas</a>.



The upper troposphere, a layer of the atmosphere just beneath the stratosphere where most aircraft fly, is where this gas contributes to global warming.&nbsp;



Despite global efforts to curb its sources, the ozone level in this atmospheric layer is showing an upward trend, and the cause appears to be human activities.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ozone-a-human-fingerprint">Ozone: A human fingerprint</h2>



A group of scientists from <a href="https://www.mit.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a> (MIT) have confirmed that a large part of the increase in upper tropospheric ozone is, indeed, anthropogenic. 



The study uncovers a clear indication of human influence on the ozone trends in the upper troposphere dating back to 2005.



The team confirmed that there is a "clear and increasing trend in upper tropospheric ozone in the northern midlatitudes due to human beings rather than climate noise."



The researchers plan to delve deeper into the data to uncover exactly what human activities are causing this trend.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ozone-and-human-activities">Ozone and human activities </h2>



Understanding the causes and influences of ozone is a complex task. The gas is not directly emitted but created through a series of chemical reactions.&nbsp;



These reactions begin with precursors, such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reducing-nitrogen-oxide-pollution-could-boost-crop-yields/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nitrogen oxides</a> and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). How long ozone remains in the atmosphere is dependent on many factors, including the type and volume of human activity in a specific area and natural climate variability.&nbsp;



Adding to the complexity is that while the ozone level in the upper troposphere is increasing, it has remained stable or even decreased in lower parts of the atmosphere, largely due to emissions control efforts in North America and Europe.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-influence-vs-climate-noise">Human influence vs. climate noise</h2>



The researchers sought to identify the human "fingerprint" in upper tropospheric ozone levels. 



To achieve this, they ran a series of simulations using a chemistry climate model to understand the impact of human activities on ozone level - distinct from the effects of climate variability.



The simulations revealed a common signal across all scenarios, which the team identified as a human fingerprint. The researchers then cross-referenced this data with actual satellite observations. 



Despite initial skepticism about the robustness of satellite data, the experts found a clear signal, especially over Asia, where industrial growth and weather conditions have significantly increased ozone and its precursors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-focus-in-search-of-the-culprits">Future focus: In search of the culprits</h2>



The next step for the MIT team is to identify the specific human activities that are causing the upper tropospheric ozone to increase.&nbsp;



The researchers are exploring various possibilities, including emissions from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/un-chief-fossil-fuel-era-must-end-for-humanitys-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossil fuel</a>&nbsp;combustion in vehicles and power plants, aircraft flying in the upper troposphere, and even the influence of wildfires.

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh assembled a comprehensive timeline that embraced multiple data sources.



To construct a complete narrative of this era, the experts used radioactive dating and geochemical information related to the rock layers where Ediacaran-Cambrian <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/500-million-year-old-trilobites-fossils-preserved-in-volcanic-ash/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossils</a> were found.

“It’s a daunting task, only made possible through international and interdisciplinary research. An integrated global approach is crucial. It exposes biases in our records, while also revealing patterns in fossil appearances, sea level cycles, and environmental oxygen," he said.

“It’s a fundamental piece of knowledge in the puzzle of life. I feel privileged to have built upon decades of interdisciplinary global research, and contributed to a better understanding of the sea level's role in early animal evolution,” said Agelvis.

This dynamic process includes several mechanisms, such as natural selection, genetic drift, and gene flow, all of which contribute to the diversity of life we observe today.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.stowers.org/">Stowers Institute for Medical Research</a> describes why experts are studying zebrafish to gain a better understanding of how the immune system responds to injury. Zebrafish have the ability to repair and regenerate organs.



“Organ regeneration offers an exciting opportunity for studying the immune system and to inquire why some species can regenerate organs like the heart or missing limbs while others like humans cannot,” explained Dr. Tatjana Piotrowski.



Zebrafish sensory organ hair cells are an ideal system to investigate the pathways and cell types involved in regeneration since they are easily destroyed with antibiotics and begin regenerating within five hours. This enabled the researchers to identify the exact timing and genetic programs for each anti-inflammatory macrophage activation state.&nbsp;



“Our hypothesis is that human macrophages do not receive the proper chemical activation 'cocktail' to instruct pro-regenerative processes,” said Dr. Nicolas Denans. “Identifying the molecular recipe of macrophage activation in zebrafish may one day enable us to design regenerative immunotherapies in humans.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



“The new evidence is a valuable resource for comparative studies on the genetic programs involved in macrophage-mediated repair and regeneration. In other words, different types of injuries may induce different kinds of inflammatory responses. We want to decipher whether this 'language' is universal or if there are a variety of dialects."

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.
