Not long ago, the common belief was that only a subset of media consumers - often less educated and highly biased - would let their political allegiance override the truth. They would believe the news that favors their political inclinations, even if it wasn't authentic.



Then some intriguing studies emerged which indicated quite the opposite. The research suggested that media consumers across the spectrum value truth over partisanship.



The studies proclaimed that the authenticity of news was more influential than its alignment with a consumer's political views by more than four times.



However, as we stand on the brink of a national election fraught with misinformation, a fresh study shakes this understanding to its core.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-news-and-political-views">News and political views</h2>



The research, led by top psychology scholars at Stanford University, suggests that the masses tend to prioritize partisanship over truth when <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/political-views-change-our-perception-of-the-past-and-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consuming news</a>.



Quite unexpectedly, this behavioral pattern spans across all political orientations, educational backgrounds, and reasoning capabilities.



Study lead author Michael Schwalbe is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Psychology at the School of Humanities and Sciences at <a href="http://www.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a>.



"We saw an effect of people being more influenced by political alignment than truth," said Schwalbe. 



"We saw it on both political sides and even among people who scored well on a reasoning test. We were a bit surprised to see how widespread this tendency was. People were engaging in a lot of resistance to inconvenient truths."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pervasive-problem-across-political-parties">Pervasive problem across political parties</h2>



The researchers unearthed intriguing ways in which political views and partisanship can impact the analysis of news. 



In one measure of bias, people's beliefs about the impartiality of their political side compared to their rivals were assessed. Ironically, those who were most confident in their side's neutrality were the most biased.



Furthermore, partisanship seemed to have a more robust effect on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-opinions-swing-voting-and-elections-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">processing real news</a> than fake news. People demonstrated a higher propensity to reject true information that challenged their political views and accept false information that supported their ideological stances.



"Everyone thinks it's the other person who is the problem," said Geoffrey L. Cohen, the James G. March Professor of Organizational Studies in Education and Business, professor of psychology in H&amp;S, and senior author of the study. 



"People say, 'Not me!' But it turns out, like with a lot of social psychological research, it's actually a pretty pervasive problem across political parties and up and down the educational ladder. The problem isn't just misinformation but the filters of our own mind - perhaps more so."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-news-sources-and-political-beliefs">News sources and political beliefs</h2>



The study is based on research conducted on a sample of the voting-age U.S. population, matched to the demographics of the census. This group included supporters and opponents of former President Donald Trump.



A distinctive aspect of this research is its deviation in methodology from previous studies. According to Cohen, this could be why the findings contradict them. While the other studies used existing news headlines, this research involved fabricated ones.



Also, in prior investigations, subjects could see the news sources, which may have influenced their acceptance or rejection of the information, whereas this study focused on the headlines alone.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-headlines">The role of headlines</h2>



The research team conjured fake headlines like "Trump Beats Grandmaster Chess Champion" and "Trump Attended Private Halloween Gala with Sex Orgies Dressed as the Pope." 



Surprisingly, the experts discovered that Trump's supporters and opponents were more likely to believe headlines that aligned with their views than to accept <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cities-are-largely-unprepared-for-the-effects-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">true headlines</a> that opposed their beliefs.



The researchers suggest that one contributing factor for this situation is the increased consumption of partisan media. 



"We found that the strongest predictors of bias include extreme views of Trump, a one-sided media diet, and belief in the objectivity and lack of bias of a person's own political side relative to the other side," Schwalbe said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-concern-about-news-consumption">Growing concern about news consumption </h2>



The findings of this study underscore concerns about news consumption in the 21st century, especially with the advent of social media and the constant availability of political news. 



Gaining access to one-sided information has become easier, which can reinforce beliefs in personal objectivity and lead to deepened polarization over time.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-possible-paths-to-improvement">Possible paths to improvement</h2>



Having identified the problem, the next logical step is to propose interventions. A measure suggested by Cohen, known as "pre-bunking," involves proactive fact-checking where media sources warn of potential misinformation, or people independently learn to recognize manipulation tactics.



However, Cohen and Schwalbe emphasized that the solution doesn't solely lie in policy changes focused on fake news; people are also biased in their disbelief of true news.



Accordingly, they highlight the significance of promoting intellectual humility, wherein media consumers acknowledge the fallibility of their minds and learn to question their perceptions.



"There's still much more to do to understand the problem," said Schwalbe. So, while this study forms a solid foundation for further exploration, there's no denying that we're only at the beginning of this investigative journey.



The study is published in the <a href="https://psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2025-33892-004.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal of Experimental Psychology: General</a>.

Love can be very similar to addiction, complete with craving, withdrawal and relapse, according to a new study. 

“I think it is when you realize you do not want to be in love yet cannot avoid it, and it causes bad things, like abuse, that we cross the line into something addiction-like,” <a href="https://www.fhi.ox.ac.uk/team/anders-sandberg/">Anders Sandberg</a>, at the <a href="http://www.neuroethics.ox.ac.uk/">Oxford University Center for Neuroethics</a>, told the publication <a href="https://www.newscientist.com/article/2129208-addicted-to-love-craving-comes-in-two-forms-and-both-can-hurt/">New Scientist</a>.

Researchers at the center found evidence that there are in fact two different types of love addiction, after reviewing 64 studies of love and addiction published between 1956 and 2016.

 People who feel desperately alone when not in a relationship, and try to replace an ex-partner immediately, could have what the research team has called a “narrow” form of love addiction.

This could  involve impaired control and social impairment triggered by abnormal processes in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-miniature-brains-cure/">brain</a> that boost reward signals.

“Drugs of addiction flood the brain with dopamine, causing an unusually strong reward signal, which drives a person to use the drug again even when this involves some setback to other interests in their lives,” said Brian  Earp, also at Oxford University Center for Neuroethics.

In the review of the studies, researchers found that some experiences of love similarly produce an unusually strong reward signal, which drives a person to pursue that experience again,.

The team also found evidence of a second, “broad” type of love addiction, which has stronger – yet still controllable – cravings. There is a rush of euphoria after each encounter and desperation, grief and depression when relationships met an abrupt end.  

The researchers found evidence that people with both types of love addiction can be suffer harm in their lives. In some cases, being addicted to love seems to have contributed to people staying in abusive relationships, or following a cult leader.

With an average elevation of 16,000 feet, the Tibetan Plateau is the highest in the world. This frigid region has been inhabited by Tibetans for thousands of years. Harsh cold, lack of oxygen, and an extremely limited food supply are just a few of the challenges that Tibetans have managed to overcome. Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uth.edu/">University of Texas, Houston</a>, set out to discover if the Tibetan people’s adaptation to high-altitude living can be attributed to their DNA.

A genome is a complete set of DNA, including all genes. The research team observed the genomes of 27 Tibetans to search for beneficial genes. They identified two genes associated with adaptations to high altitudes, EPAS1 and EGLN1. The Tibetan variant of the EPAS1 gene can be traced back to an extinct human subspecies known as the Denisovans. The Tibetan genomes also contained two genes associated with low <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-oxygen-levels-global/">oxygen</a> levels, PTGIS and KCTD12.

The study, published in PLOS Genetics, documented a Tibetan variant of VDR, a gene affiliated with Vitamin D absorption. The significance of this finding is that Vitamin D deficiency is very common among Tibetan nomads, due in part to their clothing and sun exposure habits. The VDR gene may help to offset the effects of this deficiency. 

The results of this analysis not only give insight into human adaptation to high-altitude living, but also provide a look at Tibetan demographic history. For example, the research team was able to determine that Tibetans and Han Chinese transferred genes among their subpopulations for as many as 49,000 years after they divided. 

Researcher Tatum Simonson summed up the magnitude of the study. "The comprehensive analysis of whole-genome sequence data from Tibetans provides valuable insights into the genetic factors underlying this population's unique history and adaptive physiology at high altitude. This study provides further context for analyses of other permanent high-altitude populations, who exhibit characteristics distinct from Tibetans despite similar chronic stresses, as well as lowland populations, in whom hypoxia-related challenges, such those inherent to cardiopulmonary disease or sleep apnea, elicit a wide-range of unique physiological responses,” said Simonson.

Tibetan people have survival in their DNA

Students spend countless hours in classroom lectures, and getting them to pay attention has always been a central focus for educators. Students who are more engaged in the classroom have more successful learning experiences. A new study reveals that when students are focused in class, another kind of phenomenal experience is taking place as well - their brains become synchronized.

A team of researchers led by David Poeppel of <a href="https://www.nyu.edu/">New York University</a> and the <a href="https://www.aesthetics.mpg.de/en.html">Max Planck Institute Of Empirical Aesthetics</a> used EEG testing for the study. They simultaneously recorded a group of high school students’ brain activities over the course of a semester. The comparison of the recordings revealed that the rhythms and patterns of the students’ brainwaves became exceptionally similar at times the students were focused.

Suzanne Dikker of New York University and Utrecht University is one of the lead authors of the study. "We found that students' brainwaves were more in sync with each other when they were more engaged during class. Brain-to-brain synchrony also reflected how much students liked the teacher and how much they liked each other. Brain synchrony was also affected by face-to-face social interaction and students' personalities. We think that all these effects can be explained by shared attention mechanisms during dynamic group interactions," said Dikker.

Researchers Lu Wan and Mingzhou Ding of the <a href="http://www.ufl.edu/">University of Florida</a> used observations from the experiment to determine the extent of brain synchrony among the students. They wanted to establish how classroom participation and engagement affected the level of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/walking-daily-brain-health/">brain</a> synchrony. The scientists also questioned what role social dynamics played in the outcome.

The study, published in Current Biology, found a direct correlation between the level of brain synchrony and neural entrainment.

"Your brainwaves 'ride' on top of the sound waves or light patterns in the outside world, and the more you pay attention to these temporal patterns, the more your brain locks to those patterns," Dikker explained. "So, if you and the person next to you are more engaged, your brainwaves will be more similar because they are locking onto the same information."

The researchers will expand this study in neuroscience to other settings to learn more about the dynamics of brain synchrony and group interactions. They hope to answer questions about the ideal conditions needed for a favorable group experience.

Tiny particles from air pollution can travel from the lungs into the bloodstream, possibly explaining the link between air pollution and cardiovascular disease, a new study said.

The <a href="http://www.who.int/">World Health Organization</a> estimates that in 2012, about 72 percent of premature deaths related to outdoor air pollution were due to ischemic heart disease and strokes, with the remaining 28 percent due to infections and lung cancer. 

Many scientists have suspected that fine particles from air pollution travel from the lungs into the bloodstream, but evidence supporting this in humans has been difficult to collect.

In the new study performed by the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a>, Mark Miller and colleagues at the <a href="http://www.ed.ac.uk/">University of Edinburgh</a> in the United Kingdom and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands_National_Institute_for_Public_Health_and_the_Environment">National Institute for Public Health and the Environment</a> in the Netherlands used a selection of specialized techniques to track inhaled gold <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-snow-toxic/">nanoparticles</a>.

For the research, 14 healthy volunteers, 12 surgical patients and several mouse models inhaled gold nanoparticles, which have been safely used in medical imaging and drug delivery. The nanoparticles were soon detected in blood and urine and accumulated at inflamed vascular sites, including carotid plaques in patients at risk of a stroke.

Accumulation at sites of vascular inflammation “provides a direct mechanism that can explain the link between environmental nanoparticles and cardiovascular disease,” according to the study which appears in the journal <a href="http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsnano.6b08551">ACS Nano</a>.

Trying to make up for lost sleep may be a lost cause, a new study concluded.

Skimping on sleep and then taking a long snoozes to recover led to lower attention spans and creativity in young adults, according to the study by <a href="https://www.baylor.edu/">Baylor University</a>.

"The more variability they showed in their night-to-night sleep, the worse their cognition declined across the week," said study co-author Michael Scullin, Ph.D., director of Baylor's Sleep Neuroscience and Cognition Laboratory.

The study of interior design students is published online in the <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1939-1668">Journal of Interior Design</a>  also has implications for art, architecture, graphic design and other disciplines.

Interior design is "a strange culture, one where sleep deprivation is almost a badge of honor," said lead author Elise King, assistant professor of interior design in Baylor's Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences.

The study challenges the myth -- that "the best design ideas only come in the middle of the night," King said. Researchers found the opposite -- that "consistent habits are at least as important as total length of sleep," Scullin said.

Irregular sleep hurts creativity and "executive attention" -- intense focus for planning, making decisions, correcting errors and dealing with novelty, the study said. 

Although the National Sleep Foundation recommends that young adults have seven to nine hours of sleep each day, the 28 interior design students in the Baylor study slept for short times and erratically. Only one participant slept seven hours or more nightly and 79 percent slept fewer than seven hours at least three nights during the week.

Broadening the study across  greater range of students across multiple studio-based majors and multiple universities would be valuable, researchers said.

The outlook on this phenomenon is generally bleak. A new study takes a very positive approach to warming weather patterns. The study claims that global warming will lead to healthier exercise habits for many Americans, and may even help fight obesity.

Hotter temperatures are normally affiliated with lowering utility bills, but new research shows climate change has the potential to save lives. Researchers from <a href="http://www.harvard.edu/">Harvard University</a> have found a direct correlation between global warming and increased physical activity. Dr. Nick Obradovich, the lead author on the study, warns that a sedentary lifestyle leads to depression, anxiety, and many serious health risks.    

“At a physiological level, too little exercise can produce costly health outcomes like obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and insufficient physical activity is a leading cause of death in the US,” explains Obradovich.

1.9 million people were surveyed about their exercise habits from 2002 to 2012. This information was compared to weather data from the same timeframe. The study, published in Nature Human Behaviour, reveals that people engage more in physical activities when the temperatures rise. The results also show that cold or extreme hot temperatures are factors that lead to less exercise.

The researchers used projected temperatures for 2050 and 2099 in NASA climate models and applied their findings from the research to predict the future impact of climate change on exercise habits. They determined that the warming trend will significantly increase exercise rates across the country. This will be especially true of people living in the northern states during colder months. Physical activity is expected to decline in southern regions of the U.S. during summer months. 

“If observed temperature-activity relationships from the recent past persist, further climate change may increase nationwide net participation in recreational physical activity during many months of the year, in turn magnifying many of the physiological and psychological benefits of exercise, said Dr. Obradovich.”

Small-scale fishermen in the Gulf of California are spending more time and money to catch fewer fish, according a new study.

The analysis, published April 12 in the journal <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/">Plos One</a> suggests that future investment in the region's fisheries may not be economically or ecologically viable.

Fishing in the Gulf of California, which separates Baja California and mainland Mexico, is already <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tech-solutions-emerge-fight-overfishing/">over capacity</a>, according to the study by scientists at <a href="https://scripps.ucsd.edu/">Scripps Institution of Oceanograph</a>y at the <a href="https://ucsd.edu/">University of California San Diego</a>.

According to the analysis, 17,839 boats were operating in an area that can only sustain 13,277 boats to maximize the benefits of catching more fish per trip.

“The current overcapacity of boats means that fishermen are working harder to catch fewer fish," said Andrew F. Johnson, a postdoctoral scholar in the <a href="http://gulfprogram.ucsd.edu/">Gulf of California Marine Program</a> at Scripps and lead author of the study.

This is taking a heavy toll on a region that supplies nearly 75 percent of Mexico's fish and is a popular spot for recreational sport fishing, diving, and other ocean activities. 

"This long-term overfishing reduces the biological capacity of reefs, mangroves and other important fish habitats," said Octavio Aburto-Oropeza, and senior author of the study. "Ultimately, this means we are reducing the future economic and ecological productivity of the gulf."

Understanding overcapacity  can help fishing communities better gauge their economic status and manage their environmental impact, the researchers said.

Study reveals rampant overfishing in the Gulf of California

The Middle Stone Age is a part of human prehistory between the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age characterized by unprecedented innovation and cultural diversity. It is believed that humans progressed from scavenging to hunting during this time. Archaeological evidence gives insight into the evolution of tools during the Middle Stone Age. 

It is known that heat and pressure techniques were used in early stone knapping, but the exact time and location of this development is unclear. The implementation of these techniques enabled the creation of projectile weapons. Researchers conducted a study on weapon fragments found in a South African cave to establish a more precise timeline of the advancement of stone tool technology. 

The team, led by Veerie Rots of the <a href="https://www.ulg.ac.be/cms/c_5000/en/home">University of Liege</a>, analyzed the remains of 25 stone weapon point fragments that were obtained from a dig site at Sibudu Cave in South Africa. The artifacts were compared to weapons made by an experienced stone knapper. 

The researchers discovered the artifacts had serrated edges that were most likely created using a process called pressure flaking. Pressure flaking was a more efficient way of applying force to finish the shape of the hunting tools than had been previously utilized. Some of the stone weapons had two faces, indicating that pressure had been applied to both sides. 

Over half of the artifacts showed evidence they had been used for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hunting-reduces-populations/">hunting</a>, such as small traces of animal residue. Damage to some of  the weapon points suggested they had been projected from a distance and struck targets. Meticulous examination of the stone fragments also showed indications that the stone points had been attached to a handle or strap. This would have formed a projectile weapon that could be launched with a tool such as a bow.

The study, published in PLOS ONE, ultimately dated the use of pressure flaking as far back as 77,000 years ago. The experiment revealed south African humans were using advanced stone knapping techniques during the Middle Stone Age that likely enabled them to create early projectile weapons. Further research is needed to accurately document the progression of stone tool technology in the Middle Stone Age.

South African artifacts may be among the earliest hunting tools

Scientists have known for decades that placebos, treatments with no active ingredients, can ease pain from Parkinson’s disease and other ailments. This is the first study that tested the placebo effect on the broken hearted.

Forty volunteers who just been through breakups brought pictures of their exes to a brain-imaging lab.During their scans,  they were shown images of their ex and at the same time subjected to physical pain in the form of a hot stimulus on their left forearm.

The brain scans showed that the regions of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/walking-daily-brain-health/">brain</a> that lit up during the scan were similar for emotional and physical pain. Then the volunteers were given a simple nasal spray with half told it was a placebo the other half that it was a "powerful analgesic effective in reducing emotional pain."

Back in brain scan, the volunteers were again shown images of their ex and subjected to physical pain. Those who believed the nasal spray was an analgesic felt less physical pain and felt better emotionally.

The takeaway is that believing you're doing something to help yourself get over your ex can influence brain regions associated with emotional regulation and lessen the perception of pain, the study found.

 If you've been dumped recently: "Doing anything that you believe will help you feel better will probably help you feel better," said first author and postdoctoral research associate Leonie Koban.

From Rachel Carson’s famous book Silent Spring to the ever growing organic produce market, many people have found ways to either expose or avoid the dangers of certain pesticides. Most recently, biologists at the <a href="https://ucsd.edu/">University of California San Diego</a> have shown for the first time that the popular pesticide thiamethoxam can significantly damage the ability of honey bees to fly. 

Thiamethoxam is a widely utilized neonicotinoid insecticide used on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cover-crops-climate-change/">crops</a> such as corn, soybeans, and cotton. Prior research had shown that foraging honey bees that ingested neonicotinoid pesticides were less likely to return to their home nest, which led to population declines.

In a study published in <a href="https://www.nature.com/srep/">Scientific Reports</a>, <a href="https://ucsd.edu/">UC San Diego</a> postdoctoral researcher Simone Tosi, biology professor James Nieh, and associate professor Giovanni Burgio of the <a href="http://www.unibo.it/en/homepage">University of Bologna, Italy</a>, supported their hypothesis that thiamethoxam impairs flight ability.

The researchers determined this by building a flight mill – which is a bee flight-testing instrument – from scratch and flying bees under consistent and controlled conditions. Bees that were exposed to typical levels of this neonicotinoid had severely impaired flight distance, duration, and velocity. 

Long-term exposure to thiamethoxam over a period of one or two days reduced flight ability, while short-term exposure actually increased their activity levels. The bees would fly farther, but in a noticeably more erratic pattern. “Bees that fly more erratically for greater distances may decrease their probability of returning home,” says Nieh.

Although the pesticide does not result in the immediate death of these bees, its effects can eventually lead to their demise. “The honey bee is a highly social organism, so the behavior of thousands of bees are essential for the survival of the colony,” explains Nieh. “We’ve shown that a sub-lethal dose may lead to a lethal effect on the entire colony.”

Neonicotinoid insecticides are used globally in a number of crops through spray, soil, and seed applications. Scientists have found evidence of these insecticides in the nectar and pollen that honey bees collect, leading to concern on how these insecticides are affecting bees around the world.

The importance of honey bees cannot be overstated. They are a keystone species in many ecosystems, and provide the extremely necessary pollination of crops all over the world. Further decline in these populations could result in major problems for food security and availability in countries on every continent.

A new study has emerged that puts a social psychology theory to the test. Researchers from the <a href="http://www.arizona.edu/">University of Arizona</a> set out to observe how thoughts of death can influence people’s decisions. They wanted to try and understand the psychology behind harming animals or humans. The results of the study showed that humans are more open to the idea of killing animals when reminded of their own mortality. 

The terror management theory is based upon the work of cultural anthropologist Ernest Becker, who explored the subliminal motives behind human behavior. The research team wanted to expand upon this theory to see if the fear of dying may cause people to become more supportive of killing animals. They hoped data from the study could also be used to help understand the motivation of murdering humans. 

Participants in the study answered questions about their positions on animal rights and were presented with a series of images. Half of the individuals were given a subtle “death prime,” such as an image of a t-shirt featuring a skull or the word “dead” flashing onto the screen. The rest of the group was shown alternative words like “pain” and “fail,” and the t-shirt they viewed contained no image of a skull.

Next, both groups were given a series of statements about killing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hunting-reduces-populations/">animals</a> and were asked to rate how much they agree with each of the statements. In every experiment, contributors who received the death prime were more supportive of killing animals, regardless of their status in the beginning of the study. Even people who identified themselves with the protection of animal rights responded to the death prime in favor of statements that justified killing animals.

The study was led by Uri Lifshin, a doctoral student in the <a href="http://www.arizona.edu/">University of Arizona </a>Department of Psychology. "If you're an animal lover or if you care about animals rights, then overall, yes, you are going to support the killing of animals much less; however when you're reminded of death you're still going to be a little bit more reactive," Lifshin said. 

The terror management theory poses the idea that humans use self-confidence as a shield against their fear of death. In a previous study, Lifshin and his team tested basketball players and found they improved their performance on the basketball court when reminded of their mortality. The athletes showed increased self-esteem as a reaction to the subject of death. In a different experiment, the team noted that participants who were given a boost of self-confidence were unaffected by the death prime.

"We didn't find that people's general state of self-esteem made a difference; it was this self-esteem boost," Lifshin said. "Once your self-esteem is secured, you no longer need to satisfy the need for terror management by killing animals."

The team hopes the findings of this study, published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, can be used to analyze the motivation behind murder and genocide.

Humans care less about animal rights when faced with mortality

Aflatoxins are cancer-causing chemicals that are commonly found in peanuts, corn, and tree nuts. These poisonous substances are produced by mold. The potent carcinogenic effects of aflatoxin are capable of causing fatal liver diseases in humans and animals. Researchers at <a href="https://msu.edu/">Michigan State University</a> have discovered a high risk of aflatoxin in sunflower seeds and their products. 

The team of researchers conducted one of the first experiments that links aflatoxin to sunflower seeds. The study,  published in PLoS ONE, found an alarming prevalence of aflatoxin contamination in sunflower seed products.  

Gale Strasburg is a professor of Food Science and Human Nutrition at <a href="https://msu.edu/">Michigan State University</a>. Strasburg expressed an urgent need to continue this research. 

“Since it is one of the most potent liver carcinogens known, the research to detect and limit its presence in sunflower seeds and their products could help save lives and reduce liver disease in areas where sunflowers and their byproducts are consumed,” said Strasburg.

The team based their study in Tanzania, where many farmers grow sunflowers for the seeds. Local millers then press the seeds for cooking oil, and the remaining oil cakes are used for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animals-one-side-brain/">animal</a> feed. 

Juma Mmongoyo is a former Michigan State University Food Science doctoral student and lead author on the study. Mmongoyo tested samples from seven regions of Tanzania. He found nearly 60 percent of seed samples and 80 percent of cake samples contained aflatoxin. 14 percent of the contaminated seeds and 17 percent of the afflicted cakes had levels of the toxin that were considered unsafe according to the standards of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

"These high aflatoxin levels, in a commodity frequently consumed by the Tanzanian population, indicate that local authorities must implement interventions to prevent and control aflatoxin contamination along the sunflower commodity value chain, to enhance food and feed safety in Tanzania," Strasburg said.

Aspergillus flavus, the mold that produces aflatoxin, requires certain conditions such as heat and humidity to form. Therefore, its presence varies greatly by region.

Felicia Wu is a professor of Food Science and Human Nutrition at <a href="https://msu.edu/">Michigan State University</a> and co-authored the study. 

Wu said, "Billions of people worldwide are exposed to aflatoxin in their diets, particularly in places where food is not monitored regularly for contaminants. Our previous work with the World Health Organization on the global burden of foodborne disease showed that aflatoxin is one of the chemical contaminants that causes the greatest disease burden worldwide."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes a new map of Mars that is providing insight into the planet’s watery past. The map also reveals where future missions could safely land on Mars.&nbsp;



The map has been created over the last decade using observations of water-rich rocks and mineral deposits. The images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.



"A big surprise is the prevalence of these minerals, with the map revealing hundreds of thousands of water-affected locations in the oldest parts of the planet," says ESA. "The new data will help answer exciting questions about Mars’ climate history, whether water was globally persistent or confined to short, intense episodes, and whether the conditions were ever suitable for life."



"Specifically, the map shows the locations and abundances of aqueous minerals. These are from rocks that have been chemically altered by the action of water in the past, and have typically been transformed into clays and salts."



According to John Carter of the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), our collective understanding of Mars has been oversimplified. He explained that planetary scientists have tended to think that only a few types of clay minerals on Mars were created during its wet period, then as the water gradually dried up, salts were produced across the planet.



The new map shows that the composition of Mars is much more complicated than what we thought. For example, while many salts formed after Martian clays, there are some salts that are presumed to be older than some of the clays.&nbsp;



“The evolution from lots of water to no water is not as clear cut as we thought, the water didn’t just stop overnight. We see a huge diversity of geological contexts, so that no one process or simple timeline can explain the evolution of the mineralogy of Mars. That’s the first result of our study. The second is that if you exclude life processes on Earth, Mars exhibits a diversity of mineralogy in geological settings just as Earth does,” said Carter.

The experts found that the muscle metabolism of cavefish has been genetically reprogrammed over time. As a result, the animals have experienced major changes in their morphology and behavior. Despite these changes, however, the cavefish remain healthy and fit.



The research may provide new clues about the evolutionary consequences of prolonged physical inactivity in humans.&nbsp;



“It’s no surprise that people are moving less and less as technology has advanced,” said Rohner. “With cavefish, we have a unique system where we can study what might happen if people remained couch potatoes over very, very long periods of time.”

Rising sea levels pose one of the biggest societal threats associated with climate change. According to ESA, satellite altimeter missions such as Copernicus Sentinel-6 are essential in monitoring global and regional changes in sea level.



"Unbeknown to many, the island of Crete, Greece, plays an important role in the Copernicus satellite altimetry constellation and on an international stage," reports ESA.



"Satellite altimetry data have to be continuously monitored at the ESA’s Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration where different techniques have pioneered the use of transponders to provide the best measurements to validate satellite altimeters in space soon after launch."



Dr. Craig Donlon explains that, by understanding planet Earth through satellite measurements, we are able to find evidence of change.&nbsp;
