The COVID-19 lockdown reshaped lives in many ways, including how people approached pet ownership. During the pandemic, a surge in puppy purchases swept across the U.K. as individuals and families sought companionship while they were confined to their homes.



While many welcomed new furry companions with open arms, concerns arose about the long-term consequences of these impulsive adoptions.



Would owners remain committed once life returned to normal? Would these dogs develop behavioral problems due to rushed decisions and inadequate training? Researchers at The Royal Veterinary College (<a href="https://www.rvc.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RVC</a>), U.K., led by Dr. Bree Merritt, set out to answer these questions.



The study, published in the journal PLOS One, reveals the complex reality of pandemic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reimagining-pet-diets-for-a-more-sustainable-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">puppy ownership</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-puppy-purchases-during-the-pandemic">Puppy purchases during the pandemic</h2>



As lockdown measures took hold in early 2020, people found themselves spending more time at home. Many saw this as the perfect opportunity to welcome a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/national-dog-day-honoring-mans-best-friend/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">puppy</a> into their lives.



The demand for dogs soared, leading to inflated prices, overwhelmed breeders, and, in some cases, unethical breeding practices.



Animal welfare experts expressed concerns about the potential fallout. They worried that some buyers acted impulsively, without considering whether they could provide for a dog long-term. Would these pandemic puppies face neglect, abandonment, or behavioral struggles in homes that were unprepared for their needs? 



These questions fueled the need for deeper research into the experiences of owners and their dogs.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-pandemic-puppy-owners">Tracking pandemic puppy owners</h2>



To better understand the reality of pandemic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dog-owners-ages-and-beliefs-influence-their-pet-food-choices/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">puppy ownership</a>, the researchers surveyed nearly 800 U.K. dog owners who had purchased a puppy between March and December 2020. The study aimed to uncover their motivations, training approaches, and overall experiences.



Participants provided details about their daily interactions with their pets, their emotional connection, and any difficulties they faced. A follow-up survey was conducted when the puppies reached 21 months of age. 



This allowed researchers to assess how ownership experiences evolved over time and whether the initial excitement had given way to unexpected challenges.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-owners-stayed-committed-but-at-a-cost">Owners stayed committed, but at a cost</h2>



Despite widespread concerns that many pandemic puppies would end up abandoned or rehomed, the study found that 98% of surveyed owners still had their dogs at 21 months old. 



This high retention rate suggests that, for most, the commitment to their pets remained strong even as their daily routines returned to normal.



However, the study also revealed that ownership came with significant challenges. Of those surveyed, 40% admitted that the pandemic influenced their decision to get a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-dogs-say-goodbye-before-they-die-these-signs-will-tell-you-if-your-friend-is-leaving-soon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dog</a>.



These owners were more likely to report difficulties related to costs, lifestyle changes, and unexpected responsibilities. Many struggled with cleaning up after their pets, sacrificing personal activities, and managing expenses.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-behavioral-issues-and-owner-burden">Behavioral issues and owner burden</h2>



One of the biggest concerns for pandemic puppy owners was behavioral issues. 



Dogs that grew up in lockdown often had limited exposure to the outside world, leading to problems such as separation anxiety, control struggles, and aggression. Owners who reported behavioral difficulties felt a greater burden of dog ownership.



While various problem behaviors caused stress, aggression had the most significant impact. Owners of aggressive dogs experienced a weaker emotional connection with their pets compared to those dealing with other challenges. 



This highlights the importance of early intervention and training to prevent behavioral issues from escalating.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-capturing-the-whole-picture">Capturing the whole picture</h2>



The study acknowledged a potential limitation in its findings. Owners who had already rehomed their dogs might have been less likely to participate in the follow-up survey. 



This means the 98% retention rate could represent a best-case scenario. Some dogs may have been relinquished after the survey period ended, making the overall picture more complex than the data suggests.



Additionally, the financial and emotional burdens of dog ownership might have driven some participants to keep their struggles private. Many may have hesitated to admit difficulties, especially if they felt judged for their decision to acquire a dog during the pandemic.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-better-behavioral-support">Need for better behavioral support</h2>



For those who faced challenges with their pandemic puppies, access to evidence-based behavioral support could make a crucial difference. Professional training and behavior modification techniques could help struggling owners manage their dogs more effectively, improving their overall quality of life.



"Relationships with our dogs can be immensely rewarding, but it’s not all fun and games. Looking after them can be hard work, expensive or even change day-to-day activities," noted Dr. Merritt.



"Problem behaviors are likely to be a much wider concern beyond just those dogs who were brought home during the pandemic. These results show how important it is to find evidence-based help for problem behavior to improve the emotional health of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/friends-family-members-and-guardians-dogs-are-more-than-just-pets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dogs</a>, their owners and sustain their relationship.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impulsive-pandemic-puppy-purchases">Impulsive pandemic puppy purchases</h2>



The findings of this study serve as an important reminder that dog ownership requires long-term planning, not just short-term enthusiasm. 



Many pandemic puppy buyers made decisions based on the temporary circumstances of lockdown life. Once restrictions eased and daily routines resumed, they found themselves struggling with responsibilities they had not fully anticipated.



"Impulsive acquisition of dogs based on short-term circumstances is an enduring challenge for the canine welfare sector," said Dr. Rowena Packer, senior author of the study. 



"Here, we demonstrate that puppy purchases that were a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as having increased time for a dog during this atypical period, resulted in owners who felt a greater burden of dog ownership by the time their puppy was a young adult, compared to owners whose purchases were planned based on longer-term circumstances."



"U.K. campaigns have long encouraged owners to consider their ability to care for a dog for the duration of its lifetime at acquisition. However, if the efficacy of these messages remains limited, greater interventions may be needed to emphasize the responsibilities of dog ownership, ideally prior to purchase.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-lifelong-commitment">A lifelong commitment</h2>



While most pandemic puppy owners chose to keep their dogs, the challenges they faced highlight the importance of informed decision-making. 



Owning a dog is not just about companionship; it requires time, effort, and financial resources. Without proper preparation, owners can find themselves overwhelmed, and their pets may suffer as a result.



The study reinforces the need for education and support for prospective dog owners. Those considering bringing a pet into their home must evaluate their long-term ability to care for an animal - not just their immediate desire for companionship.



With the right guidance, future pet buyers can ensure a fulfilling and responsible relationship with their dogs, built on commitment rather than impulse.

When researchers at <a href="https://www.yale.edu/">Yale University</a> reconstructed climate change in ancient Egypt, they discovered that environmental stress had a profound effect on economic and political stability. Their study alters the perception of the outcome of climate change, shifting the focus from short-term consequences to long-term modifications of human societies.

The researchers examined the environmental and societal impacts in Egypt after a sequence of volcanic eruptions over the past 2,500 years. The team focused on the Ptolemaic dynasty of ancient Egypt (305-30 B.C.E.). This was an empire formed in the years following Alexander the Great and was well-known for its rulers such as Cleopatra.

For their investigation, the experts combined climate modeling of large 20th-century volcanic eruptions, annual measurements of Nile summer flood heights from 622 to 1902, and evidence of Nile flood quality during the Ptolemaic era. The researchers demonstrated how large volcanic eruptions affected the seasonal flooding of the Nile River, which was greatly depended upon for agriculture.

"Ancient Egyptians depended almost exclusively on Nile summer flooding brought by the summer monsoon in east Africa to grow their crops," said lead author Joseph Manning. “In years influenced by volcanic eruptions, Nile flooding was generally diminished, leading to social stress that could trigger unrest and have other political and economic consequences.”

Study co-author Francis Ludlow explained that the reduced flooding of the Nile was due to climate change brought on by volcanic eruptions. He said that volcanoes can disrupt the climate by injecting sulfurous gases into the stratosphere. 

"Egypt and the Nile are very sensitive instruments for climate change, and Egypt provides a unique historical laboratory in which to study social vulnerability and response to abrupt volcanic shocks," said Manning. "Nile flood suppression from historical eruptions has been little studied, despite well documented Nile failures with severe social impacts coinciding with eruptions in 939, in 1783-1784 in Iceland, and 1912 in Alaska.”

Widespread documentation during the Ptolemaic era provided researchers with the dates of major political events. The researchers were able to show recurring close timing between such events and the dates of major <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/satellites-predict-volcanic-eruptions-2/">volcanic eruptions</a>. 

"It is very rare in science and history to have such strong and detailed evidence documenting how societies responded to climatic shocks in the past," said co-author Jennifer Marlon.

The research, which is published in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>, not only provides insight into climate change but also into how environmental changes have shaped human societies in the past.

“The study is of particular importance for the current debate about climate change,” said Manning.

If your child has a medical emergency, it’s likely difficult to decide how to immediately respond in order to best handle the situation. Whether the emergency is choking, accidentally swallowing medication, or even a minor burn, a parent’s first response may help the child to get the most appropriate form of medical care for that specific situation.

Not surprisingly, a recent national poll found that many parents might struggle with the decision of whether to provide first aid at home or rush their child to the hospital if they have a medical emergency. 

The C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health at the <a href="https://medicine.umich.edu/medschool/home">University of Michigan</a> surveyed almost 400 parents with at least one child ages 0-5. The findings showed that only half of the parents surveyed were confident they would know what to do if their child were choking. In fact, 1 in 10 parents said that they would immediately take their child to the ER for just a minor burn.

“Our report suggests that some parents may be using the ER for common situations that could be handled at home,” says Gary Freed, a professor of pediatrics at Mott Children’s Hospital and the poll's co-director. “True emergencies warrant hospital trips, but determining what is in fact an ‘emergency’ can be a confusing and nerve-wracking experience for parents who want to make the right decision.”

Although going to the ER may seem like the best decision in a lot of cases – better safe than sorry – there can be downsides. 

For example, if a child were choking it would be more beneficial to immediately help them instead of wasting valuable time by driving them to the hospital. Luckily, the majority of parents said that their first response to choking would be to attempt to dislodge the object through effective tactics.

When asked what they would do if their child swallowed harmful medication, the majority answered that they would call Poison Control. 

“Generally, calling Poison Control is an excellent first step to take if a parent suspects their child swallowed something harmful,” explains Freed. “Poison Control staff are trained to get important information from parents about the type of medication their child might have swallowed and direct them on the next steps to take.”

One important note that Freed makes was that parents who had received recent first aid training were more likely to feel confident in the case of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/kids-911-dust-heart-problems/">medical emergency</a>. Even properly supervised children can run into harmful situations, so whether that emergency may be choking or a burn, it’s best to get the proper training and take a first aid course.

It can be jarring to walk into your office on a hot summer day and have to wear a sweater indoors because the air conditioning is too strong. Unfortunately, this kind of temperature whiplash is a reality some of us know all too well.

Office productivity has even been known to suffer because the environment isn’t comfortable,  leading to epic battles amongst employees over temperature control. 

But now, a new system designed by researchers at <a href="http://www.cu-portland.edu/">Concordia University</a> uses a complex algorithm to find the ideal temperature while keeping energy costs down.

The algorithm factors in temperature, humidity, outside environment, natural light, and ventilation to keep an indoor space comfortable. 

“Improving the quality of the office-building environment impacts the comfort of employees, which in turn influences their productivity,” said Hashem Akbari, the co-author of the study.

Because it factors in each employee’s personal preferences and works with sensors placed around the office, the system actually cuts energy costs quite a bit. Otherwise, excess <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/summer-air-conditioning-pollution/">air conditioning</a> in areas where it is not needed or desired increases waste.

The system was first tested in an open-air office in Montreal that had four occupants in each of the five different zones in the building. 

The researchers then created a mathematical model of each employee’s preferences and included other factors like ventilation and natural light.

“The proposed method is able to act as the brain behind the decision-making system of a cloud-based energy management platform,” said Farhad Mofidi, a recent Ph.D. graduate in building engineering and a fellow researcher on the project. 

Only time will tell if the new system will catch on in offices across the globe. But combining green technology with cost savings and increased comfort could be a winning model.

Algorithm determines ideal indoor temperature, cuts energy costs

After a week of chaos and devastation caused by the Northern California fires, the state’s firefighters are beginning to get the fast-burning blazes under control.

Since late in the evening of Oct. 8, more than a dozen fires have been raging through several counties in the northern part of the state, killing at least 40 people and burning whole neighborhoods in the city of Santa Rosa.

But a week later, with more than 8,000 firefighters responding to the infernos, crews are beginning to gain the upper hand, despite winds that sparked new evacuations on Saturday.

“Conditions have drastically changed from just 24 hours ago, and that is definitely a very good sign,” Daniel Berlant, spokesman for the <a href="http://www.fire.ca.gov/">Cal Fire</a>, told the news agency <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/">CNBC</a>. “And it’s probably a sign we’ve turned a corner on these fires.” 

As of 1:21 p.m. Sunday, Cal Fire reported that the Tubbs Fire was 60 percent contained, after burning more than 35,000 acres in Napa County. The Atlas Fire was 56 contained at 51,057 acres. 

Fires in the Mendocino Lake Complex, Wind Complex and in Nevada County were also losing ground to the firefighters. The Sulphur Fire in Lake County was 75 percent contained, the Cascade Fire in Yuba County was 87 percent contained, and the La Porte Fire in Butte County was 80 percent contained. Other Northern California fires were at varying levels of containment.

The progress is good news for those evacuated from the wildfire areas – more than 100,000 people have been under evacuation orders over the past week, CNBC reported. About a quarter of those people were allowed to return home on Sunday.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department advised returning evacuees to wear protective clothing and expect delays. They’d have to go through safety checks and would be issued protective gear, the <a href="http://www.sacbee.com/">Sacramento Bee</a> reported.

“Residents should be prepared to evacuate again should conditions change,” the department posted on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/">Facebook</a>.

However, not all of the Northern California fires are close to being under control. The Nuns Fire – which had grown to consume four other fires in the Central LNU Complex – was only 25 percent contained. 

“Fire continued burning in the south and western portions,” Cal Fire wrote on the incident report for the fire complex.

The Redwood Valley Fire in Mendocino County, which killed at least nine people, was 35 percent contained, after burning 35,000 acres.

The Northern California fires have killed at least 40 people, mostly overnight on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9, fire officials reported. Hundreds remain missing, though officials told CNBC they hope to find most of them alive.

California’s near record rainfall over the winter after several years of drought spurred vegetation growth in the state. That, combined with record heat over the summer, left behind plenty of fuel for extreme wildfires.

The long 2017 wildfire season has been extremely expensive at both the state and federal level, the <a href="http://billingsgazette.com/">Billings Gazette</a> reports. The federal government spent more than $2.7 billion on firefighting in the last budget year, the news agency said, a record high. This year’s fires have already used more than half of the state’s emergency fund.

Firefighting costs are going up in California, Oregon, Montana and elsewhere due to a combination of hotter and drier weather and a buildup of dead and dying trees damaged by past firefighting techniques, Jennifer Jones, a spokeswoman for the <a href="https://www.nifc.gov/">National Interagency Fire Center</a>, told the Gazette.

‘Tis the season for wild turkeys in Massachusetts, but one group of troublemaking turkeys have Boston residents in a "fowl" mood.

The indigenous bird was once completely eradicated from the state. Thanks to the hard work of wildlife restoration experts, the turkeys Ben Franklin once wanted to honor as America’s national bird have made a comeback.

That comeback hasn’t come without a cost. Gangs of wild urban turkeys have begun strutting around Boston like the own the place.

“There was a girl at church on Sunday who was telling me how she got chased. She and her dog got chased by a wild turkey,” Councilman Craig Kelly said during a recent Cambridge City Council meeting.

Over the past three years, Boston and its suburbs have received countless similar complaints, including that they damage cars, attack people and pets, and ruin gardens. A review of public records turned up 60 such reports last year alone, the <a href="https://www.ap.org/en-us/">Associated Press</a> said. 

One Cambridge meeting to discuss the turkey problem became an example itself. When the meeting ended, Councilman Dennis Carlone was rushed by a turkey as soon as he left.

“It was like the turkey was waiting for me,” he told the <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/">Boston Globe</a>. “They’re clearly strategizing. And I agree, we have to think of some humane way to deal with this.”

In five cases, turkeys became so aggressive that police had to shoot them for public safety, the Associated Press reported.

The troublemaking turkeys aren’t just a problem in Boston. Cities throughout the U.S. have had to deal with more of the feathered fiends finding their way into urban areas. 

And of course, they’re not alone. Other animals like raccoons, foxes and mountain lions have made appearances in cities in recent years. The Boston area has been swamed by rabbits as well as turkeys, and they do just as much damage to yards and gardens.

The problem is that wild animals become acclimated to human areas, but don’t abandon their normal, wild behaviors. Residents who leave food out for wildlife don’t help, because it encourages them to return to the area. 

"Turkeys don't really mean to harm people – it's just tied to their social dynamics within the flock," David Scarpitti told the Associated Press. Scarpitti is a wildlife biologist and turkey expert for the <a href="https://www.mass.gov/orgs/department-of-fish-and-game">Massachusetts Department of Fish and Wildlife</a>. "They lose perspective that humans are humans and turkeys are turkeys. They just want to assert dominance over anything."

Troublemaking turkeys are ruffling feathers in Boston

Easter Island is one of the most remote islands in the world, and also one of the most mysterious. The island is home to massive “moai” stone statues, but scientists have struggled to understand both the origins and fate of the population who created the structures.

New research has disproven the theory that early inhabitants of Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, intermixed with South Americans before Europeans arrived on the island in 1722. 

A study, conducted by a team of international researchers from the <a href="https://www.ucsc.edu/">University of Santa Cruz</a>, used DNA analysis of ancient bone fragments. 

The samples were small, but new technology a made more in-depth analysis possible. The samples were taken from five individuals, two who lived before European contact and two who lived after. 

Anthropologists have debated about when intermixing occurred between the Polynesian inhabitants of Rapa Nui and South Americans. This study represents the first time paleogenomics were used to test the theory that intermixing happened before Europeans arrived at the Island. 

Now, the researchers can confirm that intermixing did not occur before <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-hurt-european-wine/">European</a> contact. 

 “We were really surprised we didn't find anything. There's a lot of evidence that seems plausible, so we were convinced we would find direct evidence of pre-European contact with South America, but it wasn't there,” said Lars Fehren-Schmitz, an associate professor of anthropology at UC Santa Cruz, and one of the researchers on the Rapa Nui project. 

Understanding how today’s inhabitants of Rapa Nui developed their genetic imprint is a puzzle to researchers, and one of many mysteries that surround Easter Island. 

Another one of the island’s great mysteries is that researchers can’t figure out how it came to be populated in the first place. 

“We know the island's modern populations have some Native American ancestry, and now we know that early inhabitants did not. So the big questions remain: Where and when did these groups interact to change the genetic signature of Easter Islanders?” said Fehren-Schmitz.

After analyzing the samples, the researchers note that further studies will help peel back the many mysteries of Easter Island.

“We want to do more work to determine more precisely when this gene flow between Native Americans and the people of Rapa Nui occurred, and wherein the Americas it originated,” said Fehren-Schmitz.

Analysis provides new clues about the Easter Island mysteries

Researchers have demonstrated that Twitter posts can help predict the outcome of sports games when combined with betting prices. The experts discovered that when the tone of simultaneous tweets toward a team are positive, the likelihood of that team winning the game is higher than betting markets imply.

The study was led by Dr. Alasdair Brown of the <a href="https://www.uea.ac.uk/">University of East Anglia.</a>

"We know that prediction markets, such as Betfair, generally lead to accurate forecasts, and outperform individual experts and polls in many settings. However, we wanted to find out if social media has anything to add,” said Dr. Brown. “Can we combine probability forecasts from prediction markets with social media output to improve our predictions?”

The researchers analyzed a total of 13.8 million tweets during an English Premier League (EPL) soccer season. These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/twitter-bots-used-good/">Twitter</a> posts were compared with in-play betting prices available at the same time on Betfair, the world's largest online betting exchange.

The experts measured the combined tone of tweets posted during any given second using a micro-blogging dictionary. When the tone of aggregate tweets was positive, this was a stronger predictor of a victory than predictions forecasted by betting market prices.

"We find that Twitter activity predicts match outcomes, after controlling for betting market prices” said Dr. Brown. “Much of the predictive power of social media presents itself just after significant market events, such as goals and red cards, where the tone of tweets can help in the interpretation of information.”

The experts developed betting strategies to quantify the degree of mispricing that social media predicts. By estimating commissions paid to Betfair and betting when tweets about a team were positive, the researchers calculated an average return of 2.28 percent from 903,821 bets. This is a significant increase compared with average returns of -5.41 percent across all matches examined.

"In short, social media activity does not just represent sentiment or misinformation,” said Dr. Brown. “If sensibly aggregated it can, when combined with a prediction market, help to improve forecast accuracy."

The study is published today in the journal <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1465-7295">Economic Inquiry</a>.

An investigation by researchers at the <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/">Imperial College London</a> reveals that psilocybin, a compound found in psychedelic mushrooms, helps relieve depression in patients with conditions resistant to other forms of treatment. The study demonstrates that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/magic-mushrooms-psychiatric-therapies/">psychoactive compound</a> may be capable of resetting the activity of key brain circuits that facilitate depression.

Researchers treated 20 patients, whose symptoms had persisted during conventional treatments, with psilocybin. Images of the patients' brains prior to administration of the drug were compared to images captured one day after the treatment. The experts identified changes in brain activity that are associated with significant reductions in depressive symptoms.

The patients reported benefits lasting up to five weeks after treatment. It appeared that psilocybin had reset the activity of a network of interconnected neurons in the brain known to play a role in depression.

The authors say that while the results of the study are exciting, further experimentation is needed using a larger sample size and a control group. Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris is in charge of psychedelic research at Imperial College London and lead author of the research.

"We have shown for the first time clear changes in brain activity in depressed people treated with psilocybin after failing to respond to conventional treatments” said Dr. Carhart-Harris. "Several of our patients described feeling 'reset' after the treatment and often used computer analogies. For example, one said he felt like his brain had been 'defragged' like a computer hard drive, and another said he felt 'rebooted.'”

The MRI imaging revealed decreased blood flow in areas of the brain including the amygdala - a small region of the brain known to be involved in processing emotional responses, stress, and fear. The imaging also showed increased stability in another brain network, which has been linked to the drug's immediate effects.

"Through collecting these imaging data we have been able to provide a window into the after effects of psilocybin treatment in the brains of patients with chronic depression,” said Dr. Carhart-Harris. “Based on what we know from various brain imaging studies with psychedelics, as well as taking heed of what people say about their experiences, it may be that psychedelics do indeed 'reset' the brain networks associated with depression, effectively enabling them to be lifted from the depressed state.”

The study is published today in <a href="http://www.nature.com/srep/">Scientific Reports</a>.

Magic mushrooms could treat depression by resetting brain

Have you ever wondered why people seem to instinctively use baby talk with their children or pets? Baby talk, or “motherese” as it is sometimes called, is widely recognizable and used across different countries, no matter the language. 

Research has found that baby talk helps toddlers learn language and emotions, and helps them understand syllables and sentence structure through the more musical and playful tone that their parents use when talking to them. 

Now, researchers from <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/">Princeton</a> have qualified the difference between baby talk and regular vocal patterns noting a distinct shift in timbre. Timbre is different from pitch and more synonymous with tone and sound. 

“Timbre is best defined as the unique quality of a sound. Barry White's silky voice sounds different from Tom Waits' gravelly one -- even if they're both singing the same note,” said Elise Piazza, a postdoctoral research associate with the <a href="https://pni.princeton.edu/">Princeton Neuroscience Institute</a>. 

There was a recognized shift in timbre across women talking motherese who spoke ten different languages and could be identified almost instantly by a learning algorithm. 

The researchers found that when the women participants spoke to adults versus infants, there were distinct differences in their vocal “fingerprints,” and it was consistent with languages spoken all over the world including, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Russian and Spanish.

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/babies-retain-language/">Baby talk</a> is nothing new, but this is the first study of its kind to identify the vocal shift in timbre physically. 

“This is fascinating because clearly, speakers are not aware of changing their timbre, and this new study shows that it is a highly reliable feature of the way we speak to babies,” said Jenny Saffran, a professor of psychology at the <a href="http://www.wisc.edu/">University of Wisconsin-Madison</a>. 

The study is the first of it’s kind and opens doors for other speech studies and analysis.

Baby talk tone and sound are the same in any language

Have you ever wondered why people seem to instinctively use...

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/economic-hardship-racial-discrimination/">Racial bias</a> often leads to an entire group of people being lumped together instead of being seen as individuals. An international team of researchers has found that one way to reduce racial bias in children is by teaching them to identify specific faces of people from a different race.

For the study, 95 Chinese children were divided into groups and trained to distinguish between the faces of males from other races. Before testing, the researchers measured their levels of implicit racial bias. 

One group saw black male faces, a second group saw white male faces, and a third group saw Asian male faces during two training sessions held a week apart. The children took the implicit racial bias test again a day after each training session and they were tested for bias a final time 60 days after the training.

Although there was no change in children who studied white and Asian faces, the children who were trained to identify black males showed a significant reduction in implicit racial bias for at least two months following the sessions. The researchers explained that the key to lessening racial bias was the repeat session.

Gail Heyman is a professor of Psychology at the <a href="https://ucsd.edu/">University of California San Diego</a> and a senior co-author on the study.

"A single session had minimal immediate effects that dissipated quickly. The lesson didn't stick,” said Professor Heyman. “But a second session a week later seemed to act like a booster shot, producing measurable differences in implicit bias 60 days later.”

Experts believe there are at least two different types of bias. Implicit bias is the extent to which we have subconscious negative and positive associations with different races. Explicit bias refers to preferences that we are aware of and can discuss with others. 

"We think that reducing implicit racial bias in children could be a starting point for addressing a pernicious social problem," said Heyman. "But it is not the complete answer to racial discrimination or to systemic, structural racism."

The study, which published in the journal <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/childdevelopment/index.html">Child Development</a>, is the first of its kind to produce lasting effects in children who are still young enough to be flexible in their ways of thinking.

New tools to help kids avoid developing a racial bias

Countries that are considered to be better off have much higher rates of cancer than countries that are worse off, according to a new study. Researchers from the <a href="https://www.adelaide.edu.au/">University of Adelaide</a> explain that access to modern medicine is helping people survive cancer and, as a result, cancer genes are passed on to new generations.

This particular instance of human evolution is causing a major shift away from natural selection. Based on their investigation of global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/traditional-chinese-ink-cancer-treatment/">cancer</a> data from the World Health Organization combined with data from the United Nations and the World Bank of 173 countries, the researchers say that the rate of some cancers has doubled and even quadrupled over the past 100-150 years. 

"Modern medicine has enabled the human species to live much longer than would otherwise be expected in the natural world," says study co-author Maciej Henneberg. "Besides the obvious benefits that modern medicine gives, it also brings with it an unexpected side-effect: allowing genetic material to be passed from one generation to the next that predisposes people to have poor health, such as type 1 diabetes or cancer.”

The findings of the analysis, which are published in the journal <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1752-4571">Evolutionary Applications</a>, reveal an accumulation of cancer incidence over four to five generations.

"Because of the quality of our health care in western society, we have almost removed natural selection as the 'janitor of the gene pool'. Unfortunately, the accumulation of genetic mutations over time and across multiple generations is like a delayed death sentence," says Professor Henneberg.

The researchers determined the ten countries with the greatest chance for natural selection, the “worse off" countries, and compared them with the ten countries that have the least opportunity for natural selection, the “better off" countries. They found that the rate of most cancers in the 10 best countries is much greater than in the 10 worst countries. 

For example, the rate of testicular cancer is 14 times higher in the top 10 best countries and the lung cancer rate is 12 times higher. Furthermore, incidents of skin melanoma are 10 times higher in the countries considered to be better off, while rates of brain and pancreatic cancers are over 5 times higher.

Co-author Wenpeng You concludes, "It may be that the only way humankind can be rid of cancer once and for all is through genetic engineering - to repair our genes and take cancer out of the equation.”

A new study has found that when sleep talking, people actually have entire coherent conversations, but they’re often intense and include profanity. The research found that these conversations are often heightened or negative in nature while remaining grammatically correct. 

The study, published in the journal Sleep, was conducted by researchers in France who looked for specifics in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fall-asleep-get-bored/">sleep</a> talking like frequency of conversations or “episodes,”  number of words, and the most common words or utterances used.

The researchers gathered data on 232 subjects and monitored their sleep talking over several nights.

The results found that the conversations were often heightened or confrontational, with many of the subjects showing a propensity for swearing even if they didn’t swear while awake. 

The results also showed that the conversations largely mirrored day to day conversations in syntax and flow, sometimes leaving whole silences for an invisible respondent during a sleep talking episode. 

“The sentences during sleep were grammatically correct mostly in the present tense, and contained subordinate clauses . . . and some rare subjunctive and conditional tenses. These results mean that sleep-talking does not parallel baby speaking, providing no evidence for age regression during sleep,” the researchers told the <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/foul-mouthed-sleep-talkers-given-rude-awakening-xsfqsjfrg">Times</a>. 

The results found a total of 882 speech episodes recorded. These episodes contained both verbal and nonverbal communication, such as mumbling and laughing, but the researchers also recognized 3,349 understandable words total.

“No” was the most common word said aloud, and men were more likely to sleep talk and to swear, according to the study. 

The researchers note that the ability have such coherent conversations while asleep shows the brain’s remarkable capacity to function at high levels, even on the off-hours.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes a new map of Mars that is providing insight into the planet’s watery past. The map also reveals where future missions could safely land on Mars.&nbsp;



The map has been created over the last decade using observations of water-rich rocks and mineral deposits. The images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.



"A big surprise is the prevalence of these minerals, with the map revealing hundreds of thousands of water-affected locations in the oldest parts of the planet," says ESA. "The new data will help answer exciting questions about Mars’ climate history, whether water was globally persistent or confined to short, intense episodes, and whether the conditions were ever suitable for life."



"Specifically, the map shows the locations and abundances of aqueous minerals. These are from rocks that have been chemically altered by the action of water in the past, and have typically been transformed into clays and salts."



According to John Carter of the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), our collective understanding of Mars has been oversimplified. He explained that planetary scientists have tended to think that only a few types of clay minerals on Mars were created during its wet period, then as the water gradually dried up, salts were produced across the planet.



The new map shows that the composition of Mars is much more complicated than what we thought. For example, while many salts formed after Martian clays, there are some salts that are presumed to be older than some of the clays.&nbsp;



“The evolution from lots of water to no water is not as clear cut as we thought, the water didn’t just stop overnight. We see a huge diversity of geological contexts, so that no one process or simple timeline can explain the evolution of the mineralogy of Mars. That’s the first result of our study. The second is that if you exclude life processes on Earth, Mars exhibits a diversity of mineralogy in geological settings just as Earth does,” said Carter.

The experts found that the muscle metabolism of cavefish has been genetically reprogrammed over time. As a result, the animals have experienced major changes in their morphology and behavior. Despite these changes, however, the cavefish remain healthy and fit.



The research may provide new clues about the evolutionary consequences of prolonged physical inactivity in humans.&nbsp;



“It’s no surprise that people are moving less and less as technology has advanced,” said Rohner. “With cavefish, we have a unique system where we can study what might happen if people remained couch potatoes over very, very long periods of time.”

Rising sea levels pose one of the biggest societal threats associated with climate change. According to ESA, satellite altimeter missions such as Copernicus Sentinel-6 are essential in monitoring global and regional changes in sea level.



"Unbeknown to many, the island of Crete, Greece, plays an important role in the Copernicus satellite altimetry constellation and on an international stage," reports ESA.



"Satellite altimetry data have to be continuously monitored at the ESA’s Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration where different techniques have pioneered the use of transponders to provide the best measurements to validate satellite altimeters in space soon after launch."



Dr. Craig Donlon explains that, by understanding planet Earth through satellite measurements, we are able to find evidence of change.&nbsp;
