The COVID-19 pandemic certainly shook things up, changing our daily routines and lifestyles, including our means of transportation.



With mask mandates and lockdowns, many of us bid farewell to our daily commutes, while countries restricted international travel to curb the virus's spread. 



Four and a half years on, we are learning to coexist with the virus and starting to understand the impact of pandemic-related changes.



A recent study investigated how the pandemic reshaped energy consumption in the transportation sector across Europe.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-post-pandemic-shifts-in-transportation">Post-pandemic shifts in transportation </h2>



The study was led by Helena Patiño, a PhD student from the <a href="https://www.uoc.edu/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Universitat Oberta de Catalunya</a> (UOC). The research sheds light on the transportation transition during and after the pandemic.



The team examined how changing travel habits have affected energy consumption and emissions.



"Overall, Europeans have reduced car use since the pandemic, but have flown much more frequently," said Patiño. 



"However, trends vary considerably between countries. Some have resumed previous transport patterns, while others have managed to maintain a moderate reduction in transport use."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-sustainable-transportation">The future of sustainable transportation</h2>



Transportation, heavily reliant on nonrenewable energy sources, contributes about 37% of our global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-hidden-carbon-footprint-of-long-distance-travel/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon</a> dioxide (CO2) emissions, the primary greenhouse gas. 



Therefore, altering our travel behavior is critical to global climate strategies, like the European scheme for a 55% reduction in emissions by 2030.



"Achieving lasting changes in people's behavior is not easy," said Patiño. "Governments should support environmentally friendly transport options, such as bicycles and electric cars, and lead campaigns to change behavior, so that sustainable transport is not just an option, but the preferred choice for everyone."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-case-studies-from-different-countries">Case studies from different countries</h2>



Post-lockdown transport habits across Europe have displayed a contrasting recovery. In countries like Austria, Germany, and the United Kingdom, the impact has been less pronounced with only minor shifts in car and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flying-has-never-been-safer-and-continues-to-improve/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plane use</a>.



On the other hand, countries with stricter government regulations such as Greece, Portugal, Italy, and Spain saw a significant surge in travel post-lockdown.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transport-policies-and-behavioral-changes">Transport policies and behavioral changes</h2>



Interestingly, some countries managed to maintain changes brought on by the pandemic. Sweden, Denmark, and the Czech Republic, for instance, saw lasting effects. 



"Sweden already had a relatively high percentage of remote workers before the pandemic, but the number has continued to grow since then. Furthermore, since 2010, the country has been promoting outdoor leisure activities, facilitating access to places of natural beauty and promoting outdoor exercise," noted Patiño. 



"Denmark, in turn, has continued to invest in cycling infrastructure and electric bicycles. A recent survey found that Copenhagen residents are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cycling-could-dramatically-cut-carbon-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cycling</a> to work more than before the pandemic."



While it's unlikely a uniform shift towards less travel will occur across Europe, as per Patiño, the experiences of these three countries offer insights into how robust transport and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-countries-are-lagging-behind-in-the-shift-to-green-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">energy policies</a> can help sustain behavioral changes and reduce CO2 emissions, reshaping the future of mobility.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reinventing-urban-spaces-for-sustainable-transit">Reinventing urban spaces for sustainable transit</h2>



The transformation of travel habits during the pandemic has opened doors to reimagining urban spaces to better support sustainable transit. 



European cities are increasingly prioritizing infrastructure that favors low-carbon transport, such as dedicated cycling lanes, pedestrian-friendly areas, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biden-lays-out-plan-for-electric-vehicle-charging-stations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electric vehicle charging stations</a>. 



Urban planners now have the opportunity to encourage greener modes of transportation by redesigning cities around sustainable travel. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-initiatives-for-sustainable-transportation">Initiatives for sustainable transportation </h2>



Cities like Paris, with its "15-minute city" model, aim to reduce reliance on cars by ensuring that residents can access most of their daily needs within a short walk or bike ride.



These initiatives are critical for a sustainable future as they encourage a shift from car dependency to more environmentally friendly alternatives. 



The success of such urban redesigns can serve as a blueprint for other cities aiming to curb emissions while promoting healthier, more resilient communities. 



With proper policies and infrastructure, Europe could set a global example for post-pandemic mobility that aligns with climate goals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-road-ahead-for-sustainable-mobility">The road ahead for sustainable mobility</h2>



As Europe continues to adapt to new mobility trends, the challenge lies in making these sustainable shifts permanent. 



Policymakers and urban planners are now focused on reinforcing eco-friendly practices, from expanding public transport networks to promoting zero-emission zones in major cities. 



By embracing these changes, Europe has the potential to lead a global movement towards greener, more resilient urban transport systems that meet both environmental and community needs.

It has been estimated that up to one-third of young North Americans and Europeans partake in binge drinking, particularly during their college years.

Binge drinking, as described by <a href="https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/">The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism</a>, occurs when 4 to 5 drinks are consumed in a two-hour period. 

Both binge drinking and alcoholism have been scientifically proven to affect brain activity. But for college students specifically, binge drinking has been linked to poor performance in school, neurocognitive deficits, and risky sexual behavior, not to mention the risks involved with alcohol poisoning and drunk driving  

Researchers in Spain and Portugal set out determine if binge drinking had any impact on the brain activity of college students while at rest. 

“A number of studies have assessed the effects of binge drinking in young adults during different tasks involving cognitive processes such as attention or working memory. However, there are hardly any studies assessing if the brains of binge drinkers show differences when they are at rest, and not focused on a task, “ said Eduardo López-Caneda from the<a href="https://www.uminho.pt/EN"> University of Minho</a> in Portugal and one of the researchers. 

Researchers asked first-year college students to take a survey about their drinking habits. If the student had partaken in binge drinking in the last month. The researchers then attached electrodes to the students and observed electrical activity in the different parts of the brain while at rest. 

The results showed different brain activity in the students labeled as binge drinkers. These students had higher measurements of beta and theta oscillations in the right temporal lobe and bilateral occipital cortex. These results are similar to the brain activity of chronic alcoholics. 

Because adolescent brains are still developing, it is especially dangerous that young binge drinkers display brain activity similar to the damage done to older adult alcoholic brains.

Lopez-Caneda stresses the importance of future studies factoring in this research to see just how much brain activity can be affected by binge <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/men-harder-quitting-drinking/">drinking</a> at a young age. 

The study was published in the journal, Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience.

Feeling alone may have a negative effect on your overall well-being, according to a new study. Researchers found that new university students consistently think their peers have more friends and a more active social life than they have. Even when this is not the case, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/college-sporting-venues-zero-waste/">students</a> who believe it to be true feel less accepted.

Ashley Whillans is an assistant professor at <a href="http://www.hbs.edu/">Harvard Business School</a> who led the study while she was a PhD candidate at the <a href="https://www.ubc.ca/">University of British Columbia</a>.

"We know the size of your social networks has a significant effect on happiness and wellbeing," said Whillans. "But our research shows that even mere beliefs you have about your peers' social networks has an impact on your happiness."

The research team collected data from a survey of over 1,000 first-year students at the University of British Columbia. Students reported how many friends they had made and estimated how many friends they believed their peers had made since the beginning of the school year. The study revealed that 48 percent of the students believed others had developed more close friendships, while 31 percent believed the opposite. 

A second survey tracked 389 students until the end of their first year. The students who believed that they had less friends than their peers at the beginning of the year reported lower levels of wellbeing.

Senior author Frances Chen said that the public nature of social activities may explain why students feel their peers are doing better socially.

"Since social activities, like eating or studying with others, tend to happen in cafes and libraries where they are easily seen, students might overestimate how much their peers are socializing because they don't see them eating and studying alone," said Chen.

According to Chen, further research is needed to determine whether the same pattern exists in other circumstances, such as with new immigrants, people moving to a new city, or people starting a new job.

"These feelings and perceptions are probably the strongest when people first enter a new social environment, but most of us probably experience them at some point in our lives," said Chen.

Repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), otherwise known as Obamacare, would likely leave many veterans uninsured, and demand for Veterans Affairs (VA) health care would surge, according to a recent report from the RAND corporation, a nonprofit research organization. 

Many veterans rely on VA health care and are more likely to be insured than non-veterans. Those most impacted by new legislation to repeal would be older, low income, and less healthy veterans. 

In 2013, it was recorded that one in ten non-elderly veterans were not insured and did not have VA coverage. VA health care will likely be faced with an influx of those seeking care if health coverage changes and would find their resources strained because of it. 

“Some veterans who lose health insurance coverage as a result of ACA repeal will become more likely to seek care from the VA health system, leading to additional strain on a health care system that already faces challenges in ensuring adequate capacity,” said Michael Dworsky, lead author of the study and RAND economist. 

Not all <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-treatment-chronic-pain/">veterans</a> are eligible for VA care, and even those that are don't always enroll in the program. Veterans who do enroll in the VA health system may still seek treatment elsewhere for many reasons. 

Due to these variables, any changes in non-VA health insurance, like Obamacare, will majorly impact veterans and the VA. 

The researchers assessed the possible ramifications of changes to the ACA by looking at how many veterans received health care and the source of care. Once they had enough data, they projected how coverage for veterans would have been affected if the ACA had been repealed or changed in 2015. 

The ACA reduced the numbers of uninsured veterans and VA-covered veterans who lacked non-VA insurance, and according to the research,m any future changes or a repeal would impact both the VA and veterans on a broad scale.

An extensive 25-year study found undeniable undercurrents of sexist media coverage and misogyny against women in sports. The study focused on sports coverage and commentators to show not just the prevalence of sexism in sports news, but also how the language and tone of sexism have changed. 

Commentators tend to cover women’s sports with bland narration, making it appear to spectators that women’s sports just aren’t as exciting as men’s sports. 

The study also found that for news coverage, highlights and news updates for women’s sports had almost 50% less airtime. 

Cheryl Cook from <a href="http://www.purdue.edu/">Purdue University</a> conducted the study along with Michela Musto and Michael A. Messner from the <a href="https://www.usc.edu/">University of Southern California</a>. The research was published in the journal, Gender &amp; Society. 

Starting in 1989, every five years, the researchers analyzed six weeks of sports news on three Los Angeles network stations and three weeks of ESPN’s SportsCenter.

One interesting aspect of conducting such a long reaching study was observing how the language and tone of sexism changed in sports news. For example, in the 1990’s coverage of women’s sports was rife with blatant misogyny, linking the female players to society's conventional gender roles of mothers and wives. 

The most recent data from 2014 shows a tonal shift in sports commentators, covering games with bland and lackluster air. The researchers call this “gender bland sexism” because it subconsciously makes the viewer think women’s sports are not as exciting. 

“Sports news shows now disguise sexism in their 'matter-of-fact' reactions to women athletes' performance, subtly sending viewers the message that women's sports lack the excitement and interest of men's sports,” the researchers wrote. 

A breakdown of the data collected in 2014 reveals that women’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/rubber-sports-possible/">sports</a> get nearly 50% less air time for news stories. While sports commentators take on a fast-paced, joking, and rousing tone when covering men’s sports, female athletes and coaches get fewer interviews, and there is less replay of game footage and highlights of exciting plays. 

“The stubborn persistence of the lower quantitative coverage and the poor production values serve as key to marginalizing women within the male-dominated, male-controlled institution of sport,” said the authors.

According to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db241.htm">CDC</a>, from 1999 and 2014, the suicide rate jumped 24%, from 10.5 to 13.0 per 100,000 people. More specifically, the rate of suicide attempts has especially increased in younger adults with only a high school education and in those with previously diagnosed mood, anxiety, and personality disorders.

Sunday, September 10th was World Suicide Prevention Day, and September is Suicide Prevention Awareness month. It is a time to raise awareness, encourage communication, and help those affected by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/higher-suicide-rates-rural-areas/">suicide</a>. 

A new report published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry examined the circumstances that most influenced suicide risk factors.

The authors collected data from two surveys that asked 69,341 adults in the U.S. questions about the occurrence and timing of suicide attempts.

Suicide attempts increased in adults from .62 percent in 2004 through 2005 to .79 percent in 2012 through 2013. The surveys also showed that most of the suicide attempts had been women under the age of 50.

The risk of a suicide attempt increased with adults aged 21-34, with those who lacked a formal college education, and in adults who had antisocial personality disorders, a history of violent behaviors, or a history of anxiety or depressive disorders.  

“The pattern of suicide attempts supports a clinical and public health focus on younger, socioeconomically disadvantaged adults, especially those with a history of suicide attempts and common personality, mood and anxiety disorders,” the study reported.

Study reveals increase in suicide attempts among young adults

Many patients who suffer from chronic pain, post traumatic stress disorder, or insomnia use cannabis-based medicines for sleep. But now, clinical research from the <a href="https://umich.edu/">University of Michigan</a> warns that regular users may struggle to sleep without the drug or may build up too high of a tolerance. 

Severe or chronic pain accounts for the majority of qualified conditions for people to use medicinal marijuana in the United States, but another common reason for people to seek out a medical marijuana card is to treat insomnia. 

Despite the legalization of marijuana in 28 states, there are still many things about the drug that are unknown. Previous research on cannabis and sleep was conducted in sleep labs, where sleep stages and sleep continuity were measured. Some of these studies showed that individuals were able to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer under the influence of cannabis.

For patients who use cannabis regularly, however, quitting the drug causes difficulty sleeping. Previous research also indicates that chronic use of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/countries-legalize-cannabis-law/">cannabis</a> may lesson the sleep benefits overtime. To test these theories, experts set out to determine how sleep quality varies among people who never smoke marijuana, occasionally smoke, and smoke daily.

98 young males were recruited for the study. They were asked to answer surveys, keep sleep diaries, and wear accelerometers for a week. Throughout the study, the individuals were instructed to use marijuana as they normally would. The results of the study found that 39 percent of the daily cannabis users reported significant insomnia compared to only ten percent of occasional smokers.

While frequent smokers were found to actually sleep worse, the researchers also discovered that frequent smokers with anxiety and depression slept much better. The researchers ultimately determined that the effects of cannabis on sleep are highly variable.

Psychiatry Professor Deirdre Conroy said that the results of using cannabis to sleep will vary according to factors such as each individual, the type of cannabis, the concentrations of the cannabis, and the frequency of use. 

Future exploration of this topic may look into how different subspecies and concentrations of cannabis impact sleep. For example, one strain of cannabis may help sleep while another may cause nightmares.

Researchers from Germany and France have determined that particles from tattoo ink can travel inside the body and reach the lymph nodes. The study, published in <a href="http://www.nature.com/srep/">Scientific Reports</a>, provides the first evidence that various pigments and toxic element impurities are transported through tattooed tissues.

Scientists at the <a href="http://www.esrf.eu/">European Synchrotron Radiation Facility</a> (ESRF) also discovered in-depth characterization of the pigments in the tissues. Hiram Castillo is a scientist at the ESRF and one of the authors of the study.

"When someone wants to get a tattoo, they are often very careful in choosing a parlor where they use sterile needles that haven’t been used previously,” explained Castillo. “No one checks the chemical composition of the colors, but our study shows that maybe they should.”

Little is known about the potential impurities in the color mixture applied to the skin. Most <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/tattoos-stay-body/">tattoo</a> inks contain organic pigments, but also contain contaminants like nickel, chromium, manganese, or cobalt. 

Other than carbon black, the most common ingredient used in tattoo inks is titanium dioxide (TiO2). This white pigment, also commonly used in food additives and paints, is used to create specific shades when mixed with colors. TiO2 tattoos often cause delayed healing, skin elevation, and itching.

Until now, potential health hazards from tattoos had only been investigated by chemical analysis of the inks. Two particular beamlines used in the current study allowed a team of scientists to clearly view titanium dioxide located inside of the tissue. 

Overall, the scientists found strong evidence for both migration and long-term deposition of toxic elements and tattoo pigments in the skin and the lymphatic environment. A broad range of particles - up to several micrometers in size - were located in human skin, but only nanoparticles had traveled to the lymph nodes. The scientists warn that these particles could lead to chronic enlargement of the lymph node and lifelong exposure.

Study co-author Bernhard Hesse is a visiting scientist at the ESRF. He explained, "We already knew that pigments from tattoos would travel to the lymph nodes because of visual evidence: the lymph nodes become tinted with the color of the tattoo. It is the response of the body to clean the site of entrance of the tattoo. What we didn't know is that they do it in a nano form, which implies that they may not have the same behavior as the particles at a micro level. And that is the problem: we don't know how nanoparticles react.”

Psychedelic mushrooms may actually be used in the future to treat depression. British scientists are planning to study the response of patients to the active ingredient in magic mushrooms known as psilocybin.

One out of three cases of depression is resistant to treatment. Researchers have been trying for years to find alternative ways to successfully treat depressed patients. For example, scientists have found that the club drug and anesthetic Ketamine can rapidly treat some of the most severe cases of depression.

Even though psychoactive drugs such as MDMA and LSD were made illegal in the 1960s, there is new interest in how these drugs may be able to help patients with serious mental conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder.

A London-based company called Compass Pathways will test the effectiveness of psilocybin in depressed patients next year. The study will take place in eight European countries over the course of three months.

The upcoming trial, which is the largest of its kind, will focus on 400 patients suffering from depression who are resistant to existing treatments. The scientists will use digital technology to observe how the patients respond to the psilocybin.

George Goldsmith is one of the founders of Compass Pathways. He explained to the <a href="https://www.ft.com/">Financial Times</a>, “This is not about going back to the 1960s, but about taking forward 21st century science with digital innovation and medicines now that we understand how they work.”

From what is known from widespread recreational use of illegal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mushrooms-safest-recreational-drug/">mushrooms</a>, experts feel confident that psilocybin is safe. However, the design of the study is still subject to regulatory approval.

This may not come as a surprise, but areas that are under the control of the Islamic State tend to not do so well in the economic department. A new report from the <a href="https://www.rand.org/">RAND Corporation</a> used advanced satellite-driven data to analyze the GDP and overall economic status of cities living under the rule of the Islamic State (IS), estimating that the IS contributed to a 23 percent reduction in the GDP of cities under its control.

The report followed the economy of the Islamic State over the course of its peak territorial control and decline through mid-2016. It found that the IS economy showed signs of significant decay across multiple sectors, including local markets, electricity, and agriculture.

This report focused on the effects of IS control on local economies because the group relies on local taxation for a large amount of its revenue. In Raqqa and Mosul, the capitals of the IS, the group devoted a vast amount of resources to their governance – allowing those cities to fare better than most early on in the conflict. These cities were supposed to be the heart of the caliphate (rule or reign of a Muslim leader) that the IS was looking to build. However, the areas were unable or unwilling to support economies in the less secure and contested parts of their territories. 

Along with the assessment of economy and GDP, the report also analyzed the ability of the Islamic State to govern its territories and the populations under its control in Iraq and Syria. 

“The Islamic State's inability to sustain a large-scale prosperous proto-state represents an institutional failure by the group to capitalize on a vast territory, historically weak governments, potentially sympathetic local populations, and a massive financial war chest," says Eric Robinson, lead author and a research programmer and analyst at RAND, a nonpartisan research organization.

Researchers found that the most significant factor for this economic decline was the inability of the IS to defend its territory against military opposition, although the lack of effective governance was also an issue – to nobody’s surprise. 

“Our analysis suggests that it is too simplistic to blame stagnant economic conditions solely on the quality of the Islamic State's governance,” explains Daniel Egel, an author of the report and economist at RAND. “The U.S. and coalition military campaign against the group has been integral to their failure to build prosperous local economies and develop a sustainable caliphate."

Besides the helpful knowledge of the Islamic State’s inability to govern or promote economic stability, this report also exemplifies an innovative approach to measuring economic activity in areas of conflict. When conditions on the ground affect ability to gather data on local economies, researchers are able to use satellite imagery from space instead. The view from space can provide insight on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agriculture-threaten-native-wildlife/">agricultural</a> production, market activity, vehicle traffic, industrial activity, and labor supply.

The study also provides insight for what areas will be most in need of stabilization in the future – benefitting both the people most in need of help and those that are on the ground to help them.

Both depression and alcoholism are incredibly destructive psychological diseases that affect millions of people all around the globe. For years, researchers have been studying these diseases in an effort to combat their destructive effects. Now researchers studying patients with depression and harmful drinking in India may have found a better way to provide psychological interventions.

In two studies published in <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/">PLOS Medicine</a> by Vikram Patel of <a href="https://hms.harvard.edu/">Harvard Medical School</a>, analysis points to brief psychological interventions delivered by lay counselors in primary care as a cost-effective – as well as just plain effective – way to assist patients with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/men-harder-quitting-drinking/">alcoholism</a> and depression. Lay counselors are counselors trained to provided a specific service or perform certain limited activities within a community.

The two forms of intervention used in this study were previously reported on by the same authors at 3 months. However, their longer-term benefits were not known until now. The Healthy Activity Program (HAP) and Counselling for Alcohol Programs (CAP) were the two programs studied.

In studying the HAP, 493 adult primary health care attendees with moderately severe to severe depression were randomly assigned either the HAP treatment plus enhanced usually care (EUC) or just EUC alone. After a 12-month period, the researchers found that HAP participants maintained the benefits they had shown at 3 months, with lower symptom severity scores and higher rates of remission than the participants who received EUC alone.

In studying CAP, 377 adult male primary health care attendees with harmful drinking were randomly assigned either the CAP treatment plus EUC, or just EUC alone. The results showed that through a 12-month period, CAP participants maintained the gains they exhibited at the end of the 3-month treatment, with higher remission rates and a greater number reporting no alcohol consumptions in the last 14 days than those who receive EUC alone.

The authors also found that both HAP and CAP were likely to be cost-effective, and if productivity costs were taken into account, they could even save money.

An unprecedented study published today in the <a href="http://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a> calculates the real danger of particulate air pollution. The research reveals that Chinese policy may inadvertently cause people in northern China to live 3.1 years less because air pollution concentrations are 46 percent higher in this region than they are in the south.

Experts estimate that 4.5 billion people are  exposed to levels of particulate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-deaths-climate-changes/">pollution</a> that are at least twice what the World Health Organization considers safe. This study is the first to determine the impact that prolonged exposure to particulate matter has on a person's lifespan.

The findings of the study suggest that an extra 10 micrograms per cubic meter of particulate matter pollution (PM10) reduces life expectancy by 0.6 years and causes an increase in cardiorespiratory deaths.

"These results greatly strengthen the case that long-term exposure to particulates air pollution causes substantial reductions in life expectancy,” said co-author Michael Greenstone. “They indicate that particulates are the greatest current environmental risk to human health, with the impact on life expectancy in many parts of the world similar to the effects of every man, woman and child smoking cigarettes for several decades.”

Greenstone is the director of the Energy Policy Institute at the <a href="https://www.uchicago.edu/">University of Chicago</a> (EPIC). He said that history has shown us that “air pollution can be reduced, but it requires robust policy and enforcement."

The study focused on China's Huai River policy, which provided free coal for winter heating to people living north of the river. China did not have the resources to provide free coal to the entire country, which is part of why the policy was developed. 

Residents exposed to more pollution in northern China were generally not able to migrate to less polluted areas due to migration restrictions, which produced a great opportunity for scientists to observe the health effects of particulate pollution in a natural environment.

"The study's unique design provides solutions to several challenges that have been difficult to solve," said co-author Maoyong Fan. "The Huai River policy also provides a research design that can be used to explore a variety of other questions about the long-run consequences of exposure to high levels of pollution."

China has recently increased its efforts to curb air pollution. China is switching its primary source of heating from coal-fired boilers to gas or electric units, and has shut down many coal plants. This has significantly decreased particulate air pollution in some of China's most polluted cities, including Beijing.

"Our findings show that these changes will bring about significant health benefits for the Chinese people in the long run," said co-author Guojun He. "If all of China were brought into compliance with its Class I standards for PM10, more than 3.7 billion life-years will be saved."

A new study from the <a href="http://www.silentspring.org/">Silent Spring Institute</a> found indoor air pollutants in subsidized housing in Boston, Massachusetts, with some chemicals hitting unsafe levels. What is most surprising, though, is that the indoor air pollution was found in green homes, or homes built to comply with enhanced energy efficiency standards. 

The study also sheds light on which chemicals originate from the building itself, and which are brought in by homeowners. 

“This is the first study to look at air pollutants pre- and post-occupancy, allowing us to really hone in on the sources,”  said Robin Dodson, an environmental exposure scientist at Silent Spring Institute.

Dodson also said that indoor pollution from building materials could cause an array of health and respiratory problems, including asthma, reproductive disorders, cancer and lower IQ. 

Many household cleaning products, furniture, plastics, and home essentials contain chemicals that can contribute to indoor pollution, but Dodson found many chemicals came directly from the homes themselves. 

The researchers collected air and dust samples from newly renovated subsidized homes in Boston, both before and after people moved into the units. 

<a href="https://www.earth.com/video/houseplants-reduce-indoor-air-pollution/">Indoor pollution</a> levels are often higher in lower income housing compared to wealthier communities. 

Dodson found flame retardants, phosphate, and tris (1,3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCDIPP) that most likely came from the building versus the occupants. Incidentally, TCDIPP has been associated with decreased fertility in men. 

The researchers found some chemicals that have been banned or phased out, and formaldehyde was detected in all units. Even more alarming was that formaldehyde levels in the units were higher than <a href="https://www.epa.gov/">Environmental Protection Agency</a> (EPA) recommendations. 

Dodson hopes the research will help shape building standards for low-income housing and other developments.

Combining healthier building initiatives, excluding hazardous chemicals from green building materials, and educating the public on household products that contain harmful ingredients can all drastically help reduce indoor pollution levels.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

The province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes a new map of Mars that is providing insight into the planet’s watery past. The map also reveals where future missions could safely land on Mars.&nbsp;



The map has been created over the last decade using observations of water-rich rocks and mineral deposits. The images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.



"A big surprise is the prevalence of these minerals, with the map revealing hundreds of thousands of water-affected locations in the oldest parts of the planet," says ESA. "The new data will help answer exciting questions about Mars’ climate history, whether water was globally persistent or confined to short, intense episodes, and whether the conditions were ever suitable for life."



"Specifically, the map shows the locations and abundances of aqueous minerals. These are from rocks that have been chemically altered by the action of water in the past, and have typically been transformed into clays and salts."



According to John Carter of the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), our collective understanding of Mars has been oversimplified. He explained that planetary scientists have tended to think that only a few types of clay minerals on Mars were created during its wet period, then as the water gradually dried up, salts were produced across the planet.



The new map shows that the composition of Mars is much more complicated than what we thought. For example, while many salts formed after Martian clays, there are some salts that are presumed to be older than some of the clays.&nbsp;



“The evolution from lots of water to no water is not as clear cut as we thought, the water didn’t just stop overnight. We see a huge diversity of geological contexts, so that no one process or simple timeline can explain the evolution of the mineralogy of Mars. That’s the first result of our study. The second is that if you exclude life processes on Earth, Mars exhibits a diversity of mineralogy in geological settings just as Earth does,” said Carter.

The experts found that the muscle metabolism of cavefish has been genetically reprogrammed over time. As a result, the animals have experienced major changes in their morphology and behavior. Despite these changes, however, the cavefish remain healthy and fit.



The research may provide new clues about the evolutionary consequences of prolonged physical inactivity in humans.&nbsp;



“It’s no surprise that people are moving less and less as technology has advanced,” said Rohner. “With cavefish, we have a unique system where we can study what might happen if people remained couch potatoes over very, very long periods of time.”

Rising sea levels pose one of the biggest societal threats associated with climate change. According to ESA, satellite altimeter missions such as Copernicus Sentinel-6 are essential in monitoring global and regional changes in sea level.



"Unbeknown to many, the island of Crete, Greece, plays an important role in the Copernicus satellite altimetry constellation and on an international stage," reports ESA.



"Satellite altimetry data have to be continuously monitored at the ESA’s Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration where different techniques have pioneered the use of transponders to provide the best measurements to validate satellite altimeters in space soon after launch."



Dr. Craig Donlon explains that, by understanding planet Earth through satellite measurements, we are able to find evidence of change.&nbsp;
