A good night’s sleep does more than help you feel rested - it literally clears your mind. New research reveals how deep sleep removes waste buildup in the brain, a process that is crucial for brain health.



However, sleep aids may disrupt this natural “brainwashing” system, raising questions about their long-term effects on cognitive function.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-s-built-in-cleanup-system">Brain’s built-in cleanup system</h2>



The glymphatic system is like a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-sleep-transforms-brain-performance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cleaning service for your brain</a>. Throughout the day, metabolic waste builds up in the brain, including toxic proteins that, if not removed, can lead to neurological issues like Alzheimer’s disease.



The glymphatic system works by using cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), a clear liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, to flush out these harmful substances.



Think of the CSF as water flowing through pipes and washing away debris. This process happens most effectively during deep sleep, when the brain’s cleaning system kicks into high gear.



While scientists have known about the glymphatic system’s existence for years, they didn’t understand exactly what powered it - until now.



Recent research has shown that norepinephrine, a chemical messenger in the brain, is key. During deep sleep, waves of norepinephrine cause blood vessels in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-brain-literally-changes-based-on-daily-activities-and-lifestyle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain</a> to pulse rhythmically. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-norepinephrine-in-brain-cleaning">Role of norepinephrine in brain cleaning</h2>



Danish scientists have uncovered a crucial role for norepinephrine during deep sleep. They found that the brainstem releases waves of norepinephrine roughly every 50 seconds during this sleep phase. 



These waves cause blood vessels in the brain to contract and relax rhythmically, much like a pump. This rhythmic movement generates fluid pulses that help cerebrospinal fluid flow through the brain and flush out waste and toxins.



“It’s like turning on the dishwasher before you go to bed and waking up with a clean brain,” explained Maiken Nedergaard, senior author and researcher at the <a href="https://www.rochester.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Rochester</a> and <a href="https://www.ku.dk/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Copenhagen</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-blood-flow-during-sleep">Brain blood flow during sleep</h2>



Nedergaard's team investigated how norepinephrine affects blood flow during sleep. In sleeping mice, they observed that waves of norepinephrine align with changes in the size of blood vessels.



These waves cause the blood vessels to alternately contract and expand in a steady rhythm. This rhythmic motion acts like a pump, pushing cerebrospinal fluid through the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-sleep-how-slow-waves-boost-memory-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain</a> to remove waste.



“You can view norepinephrine as this conductor of an orchestra. There’s a harmony in the constriction and dilation of the arteries, which then drives the cerebrospinal fluid through the brain to remove the waste products,” noted lead author Natalie Hauglund.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-are-all-types-of-sleep-equal">Are all types of sleep equal?</h2>



The researchers investigated how zolpidem, a common sleep aid, affects the brain's cleaning system during deep sleep. They found that mice given zolpidem experienced a significant reduction in norepinephrine waves, which are essential for driving the brain’s waste-clearing process. 



Specifically, the norepinephrine waves were 50% weaker in mice that were given zolpidem than in mice that slept naturally.



As a result, the fluid transport system responsible for flushing out brain waste slowed down by more than 30 percent. Although zolpidem helped the mice fall asleep faster, their brain’s ability to remove harmful waste was compromised.



This suggests that while sleep aids like zolpidem can promote sleep, they might interfere with the brain's natural cleaning processes, potentially <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poor-sleep-habits-may-age-the-brain-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">affecting long-term brain health</a>.



“If people aren’t getting the full benefits of sleep, they should be aware of that so they can make informed decisions,” Hauglund warned.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-human-health">Implications for human health</h2>



While this study was focused on mice, the researchers believe the findings are relevant to humans, who also have a glymphatic system.



Similar patterns of norepinephrine waves, blood flow changes, and fluid dynamics have been observed in human brains. Disruptions to these processes may contribute to neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.



“Now we know norepinephrine is driving the cleaning of the brain, we may figure out how to get people a long and restorative sleep,” Nedergaard concluded.

The research highlights how critical deep sleep is for keeping the brain healthy. During deep sleep, the brain’s cleaning system removes harmful waste and toxins. This process is essential for preventing neurological disorders and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-is-essential-for-memory-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">maintaining cognitive function</a>.



While sleep aids can make falling asleep easier, they may interfere with the brain's natural cleaning process by disrupting mechanisms like norepinephrine waves, which drive waste clearance. 



This disruption could reduce the benefits of sleep and potentially harm long-term brain health.



By understanding these processes, people can make more informed decisions about their sleep habits, such as prioritizing natural, restorative sleep over relying on sleep medications.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell/abstract/S0092-8674(24)01343-6" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cell</a>.

A new archeological discovery could settle the debate of when the first humans settled in the Western Hemisphere. 

American archeology has been divided on the subject of the first human hunter-gatherers to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-migration-different-route/">migrate to the region. </a>

There is a wide body of evidence pointing to the Clovis people, believed to have lived in North America around 13,500 years ago. 

However, stone tools dating back 20,000 years suggests that humans settled in the Western Hemisphere much earlier than previously realized. 

150,000 “unique” stone tools were recently uncovered near Austin, Texas thanks to archaeologists led by Thomas Williams from <a href="http://www.txstate.edu/">Texas State University</a>.

Williams and his research team detailed their findings in the journal Science Advances. 

The tools were found on the Gault site in Texas and dated back 16,000 to 20,000 years ago with distinct points and shapes that do not match any Clovis artifacts. Optically-stimulated luminescence aging was used to date the artifacts. 

“These projectile points are unique. We haven't found anything else like them,” Williams said. “Combine that with the ages and the fact that it underlies a Clovis component and the Gault site provides a fantastic opportunity to study the earliest human occupants in the Americas.”

Clovis artifacts were previously found on the Gault Site but upon digging deeper the researchers discovered older tools which they called the “Gault Assemblage.”

The tools shed new light on the earliest hunter-gatherers in the Western Hemispheres and provide a better timeline for the presence of humans in North America.

As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-happens-to-wind-power-when-theres-no-wind/">we reported recently</a>, difficulties can arise when long periods of “wind drought” cause energy-producing wind turbines to come to a standstill. At that time, the UK was dealing with a week of calm resulting in a two percent drop in power generation. 

Now, conditions in Britain have far from improved and the turbines have been still for the past six weeks due to wind shortages. 

According to the <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-5966121/Britains-turbines-producing-40-electricity-winds-disappear-six-weeks.html">Daily Mail</a>, the cause of the wind shortage is a large area of high pressure hovering over the UK. Coincidentally this is also what’s behind the unusually warm summer that Scotland, Ireland, and Britain are currently experiencing. 

“It's like a lid, it keeps everything still,” Graheme Madge, a spokesperson for the <a href="https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/">Met Office</a>, told the Daily Mail. “From the forecast looking out over the next couple of weeks, there doesn't seem to be any significant change on the way.”

This month, generation of electricity dropped by 40 percent and was 30 percent lower compared to how much energy wind generated last year during this time, even with new wind farms and advancements in wind power technology in the UK. 

One good thing about the wind shortages is that it’s happening during the summer when electricity needs are relatively low. However, the wind drought and its low production has many concerned about switching all energy needs to renewables. 

If the UK and other countries are to become 100 percent dependent on renewables, then there must be strategies in place for periods like this, when low wind affects energy production. 

Although solar power was able to pick up some of the slack from the drop in energy from wind turbines, according to the Daily Mail, it simply is not enough to fully compensate for the energy wind turbines produce. 

Last year, wind energy provided 15 percent of Britain's power, twice as much as coal, but this year those numbers dropped to less 2 percent on June 2nd. 

Hopefully, as dependence on renewables increases and advancements continue, wind shortages like this will not have the same dire effect that they do currently. 

“The renewable energy family continues to perform well, powering over 30 percent of Britain's commercial and domestic needs over the last year, waste-to-energy, biomass plants, wind and solar are setting generation records and enjoy record levels of public support,” Frank Gordon from the <a href="https://www.r-e-a.net/">Renewable Energy Association</a> told the Daily Mail. “Advances in energy storage technologies ensure energy stability to the grid, storing excess energy produced by renewables such as wind and solar for periods when we experience less wind or sun.”

UK wind drought drastically reducing turbine energy production

A new investigation has found that caffeine is not effective as an appetite suppressant or a weight-loss aid. Study participants who drank <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/need-pick-climbing-stairs-beat-caffeine/">caffeine</a> consumed around ten percent less food in the morning, but this effect did not last throughout the day or change their perception of how hungry they felt.

Study lead author Leah M. Panek-Shirley is a professor in the Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at <a href="https://www.suny.edu/">SUNY University</a>.

“Caffeine is frequently added to dietary supplements with claims that it suppresses appetite and facilitates weight loss,” said Professor Panek-Shirley. “Previous research has speculated that caffeine speeds metabolism or affects brain chemicals that suppress appetite.” 

“In addition, epidemiological evidence suggests that regular caffeine consumers have a lower body mass index (BMI) than non-consumers. The purpose of our study was to determine whether caffeine can in fact be linked to reduced food intake or suppressed appetite, and if the results vary by BMI.”

The study was focused on fifty healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 50, who were observed once a week over the course of a month. Some individuals drank juice with caffeine added, which was either the equivalent of four or eight ounces of coffee, and others drank juice with no added caffeine as a placebo.

Thirty minutes later, participants were instructed to eat as much as they wanted from a breakfast buffet. The individuals recorded everything they ate throughout the rest of the day as well, and documented their appetite each time.

The study revealed that participants who had drank juice with a low dosage of caffeine consumed about 70 fewer calories at breakfast. However, they were found to compensate for the calories later in the day. 

There were no changes in appetite reported by those who had consumed caffeine, and no association was found between BMI and appetite or calorie intake.

“This study, by nature of its rigorous design, reinforces the importance of good eating habits and not relying on unsupported weight loss aids or unhealthy practices,” said study co-author Carol DeNysschen.

The research is published in the <a href="https://jandonline.org/">Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics</a>.

Study: Caffeine does not help you eat less or lose weight

Lobbying has become a sad reality of American politics, as billions of dollars exchanges hands each year when lobbyists work to influence congressional legislation. 

<a href="https://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/">Open Secrets</a> has reports on annual lobbyist spending dating back to 1998 and how much was spent by different sectors. Not surprisingly, when word of new legislation arises, the corporations with the deepest pockets seem to hold the most power in lobbying for support. 

A new study found this to be the exact case in regards to climate change lobbying. Robert Brulle from <a href="http://drexel.edu/">Drexel University</a> examined Open Secret data on climate lobbying and found that between 2000 and 2016, more than $2 billion were spent on influencing relevant legislation in the US Congress. 

Those sectors that depend on fossil fuels and un-capped carbon emissions spent the most, far outweighing any pro-climate mitigation lobbying according to the results. 

The study was published in the journal Climate Change.

Brulle found that the two billion dollars spent on climate-related lobbying only accounted for 3.9 percent of total $53.5 billion spent on lobbying in the US from 2000 to 2016. 

Spending on climate lobbying varied depending on attitudes and political positions on climate change. For example, between 2000 and 2006 only $50 million was spent on climate lobbying, however, that amount increased to 362 million in 2009. 

The Open Secrets data showed that the electrical utility sector spent the most, $554 million, on climate change lobbying of any other organization or sector over the 16 year period. Fossil fuel companies spent $370 million and the transportation sector spent $252 million during the same period. 

Environmental organizations and renewable energy sector spending, on the other hand, was overshadowed by fossil fuel corporation spending by ten to one. 

“The vast majority of climate lobbying expenditure came from sectors that would be highly impacted by climate legislation,” said Brulle.“The spending of environmental groups and the renewable energy sector was eclipsed by the spending of the electrical utilities, fossil fuel, and transportation sectors.”

The results do not bode well for the future of climate change policies in the United States. Even though countless studies have warned against the future impact climate change will have on weather, rising sea levels, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-hinder-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, money speaks louder than facts when it comes to lobbying. 

“Lobbying is conducted away from the public eye. There is no open debate or refutation of viewpoints offered by professional lobbyists meeting in private with government officials,” said Brulle. “Control over the nature and flow of information to government decision-makers can be significantly altered by the lobbying process and creates a situation of systematically distorted communication. This process may limit the communication of accurate scientific information in the decision-making process.”

The wealthiest have the most influence over climate legislation

Researchers at the <a href="https://uconn.edu/">University of Connecticut</a> have found that around half of the gyms in the United States provide members with tanning beds, which are considered a potentially addictive carcinogen. Ironically, exercise reduces the risk of every cancer except for melanoma, and people who exercise the most are at a greater risk of skin cancer.

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. To make matters worse, people who tan in gyms tend to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-counter-depression-medication/">exercise</a> more often and more addictively.  

Study co-author and psychologist Sherry Pagoto said that “by pairing exercise with tanning beds, gyms send the message that tanning is part of a healthy lifestyle. It is not.”

The investigation was focused on 636 individuals who had any history of using tanning beds. Overall, 24 percent reported tanning at a gym at least one time.

Those who reported tanning at a gym tended to tan obsessively and were more likely to fit a profile of addictive tanning.  

The study also revealed that more frequent tanning was associated with intense exercise, which raises concerns due to the connection between heavy exercise and skin cancer risk.

“Exercise and tanning are both things people use to look better, which may be why we see a connection between these two behaviors, and why gyms are providing tanning beds to patrons,” said Pagoto.


The link between exercise and a higher risk of skin cancer is still not clearly understood, but it is known that the majority of skin cancers are caused by exposure to ultraviolet light, which is generated by tanning beds.

Even infrequent use of tanning beds has been found to triple the risk of melanoma. According to the <a href="http://www.melanoma.org/">Melanoma Research Foundation</a>, the incidence of skin cancer has been on the rise in the United States for the past three decades.

The American Cancer Society reports that 91,000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma in 2018, and around 9,000 will die from it.

“Indoor tanning is the same class of carcinogen as tobacco, radon, and arsenic,” said Pagoto. “Those are not things you'd want around you while you're working out.”

The research is published in the <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamadermatology">Journal of the American Medical Association Dermatology</a>.

Mass shooters are more likely to be given sympathetic treatment by the media if they are white, according to a new study. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.osu.edu/">Ohio State University</a> analyzed coverage of 219 mass shootings and found that white shooters were more likely to be described as “mentally ill” than black shooters. 

Not only that, but media coverage on white shooters was much more sympathetic and forgiving, referencing their “good character” and how surprising or out of character the shooting was. 

“There's a big difference in how black and white mass shooters are covered in the media,” said Scott Duxbury, the lead author of the study. “Much of the media coverage of white shooters framed them as sympathetic characters who were suffering from extreme life circumstances. But black shooters were usually made to seem dangerous and a menace to society.”

The study was published online in the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency. 

433 media articles and transcripts about 219 randomly selected mass shootings taking place in the United States from 2013 to 2015 were reviewed by the researchers. 

A <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/school-shootings-deaths-increasing/">mass shooting</a>, in the case of the study, was defined as a shooting in which four or more victims were shot in a single event, not including the perpetrator. 

Certain controlling factors that might influence the kind of coverage reported were taken into consideration including the number of victims, where the shooting took place, if the shooting was framed as gang violence, and who the victims were and their relation to the shooter. 

After reviewing and analyzing the coverage, the researchers found that white shooters were 95 percent more likely to be described as mentally ill. The majority of white attackers were also described as victims of society compared to only 17 percent of black perpetrators. 

If the shooter committed suicide, they was much more likely to be labeled as mentally ill and in 46 percent of the articles, the shooter was labeled as a “victim of society” who was under stress or suffered abuse. 

Some of the articles included testimony to the shooter’s good character, but these were almost exclusively about the white shooters. 

“Black shooters who were described as mentally ill never receive testament to their good character and the media never describe the shootings as out of character,” said Duxbury. “And only white shooters were ever talked about as coming from a good environment.”

One prominent example of racial bias in the media was found in the comparison between David Ray Conley, a black man, and Josh Boren, a white man. 

“The comparison between Conley and Boren is striking. Both shooters were adult men who murdered their families.” the researchers explained in their study.  “Both had a history of domestic violence and drug abuse and both had received treatment for mental illness. However, whereas the media described Josh Boren as a quiet, gentle man - a teddy bear - coverage of Conley described him as perpetually violent, controlling and dangerous.” 

Gang-affiliated shootings were also reported differently by the media compared to those with white shooters. 

Media coverage of shootings attributed to gang violence discussed the criminal history of the perpetrators and the problems of the community. 

“When the media frame a mass shooting as stemming from gang violence, they talk about the perpetrators as being perpetually violent and a menace to society,” said Duxbury. “But when a shooting is attributed to mental illness, the media treat it as an isolated incident, or the result of the pressures on the perpetrator.”

The results show how historical depictions of violent black men, often demonized and <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5004736/">characterized as brutish</a>, still prevail in society and lead to racial bias in media coverage.

Study: Media gives white mass shooters more sympathetic treatment

Each year, over 300 million people travel to national parks in the United States to take in the natural beauty of our country. Visitors are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban areas, along with the noise and air pollution associated with the city – but their efforts might be in vain. 

A new study published in <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a> has found that poor air quality in national parks could be negatively affecting visitation.

Researchers from <a href="https://www.iastate.edu/">Iowa State University</a> and <a href="https://www.cornell.edu/">Cornell University</a> studied ozone levels in 33 of the country’s largest national parks. Results showed that from 1990 to 2014, the average ozone concentrations in national parks were basically indistinguishable from ozone levels in the 20 largest U.S. metropolitan areas. 

“The U.S. has spent billions of dollars over the last three decades to improve air quality,” says David Keiser, an assistant professor of economics at Iowa State. “Given the popularity of national parks, as well as the fact that people go to parks to be outside, we believed it was worth better understanding air quality trends in these areas and whether people, through their actions, respond to changes in air quality in parks.”

The study determined that ozone levels in metropolitan areas had begun to improve beginning in 1990, but improvements within national parks have only been occurring since the early 2000s. This finding connects to the passage of the Regional Haze Rule, a 1999 EPA regulation that bolstered air quality protections for national parks and wilderness areas. Data also showed that, since 1990, national parks have only seen a minor reduction in days where ozone concentrations exceeded 70 parts per billion – which is deemed an unhealthy ozone level by the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wheeler-environmental-injustice-epa/">EPA</a>.

By matching this pollution data to monthly park visitation data for the 30+ national parks, the researchers found that visitation correlates most directly to ozone during months with poor air quality. This response is most significant in the summer and fall, when park visitation is at its peak.

The researchers also assessed two possible causes for this connection: air quality warnings issued by parks and poor visibility. Interestingly, they determined that visitation response is most significantly correlated with potential health warnings, and has less association with visibility. 

Clearly, there is a definitive need to improve air quality throughout the country – not just at national parks. But if we can’t attain clean air in the places we go to seek it most, it spells trouble for a future with exploding populations and increased urbanization.

Air pollution is reaching national parks and deterring visitors

Researchers have previously demonstrated that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cancer-patients-medicinal-marijuana/">cannabinoids</a> can help to relieve many side effects of anti-cancer therapies, including nausea, vomiting, pain, anxiety and loss of appetite. Experts are now exploring the potential for cannabinoids to directly treat cancer.

According to the <a href="https://www.cancer.gov/">National Institute of Cancer</a>, one in every three individuals will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in life, and there will be a 60-percent increase in the number of deaths from cancer by the year 2030.

Phytocannabinoids, which occur naturally in the marijuana plant, are the most recognizable type of cannabinoid. Studies have shown that cannabinoids may stop cancer cells from dividing and invading normal tissue, and that they may also block the blood supply to tumors.

Additional research has suggested that cannabinoids may boost the body's immune response against the growth and spread of tumors.

Dr. David Meiri works in the Laboratory of Cancer Biology and Cannabinoid Research at the <a href="https://www.technion.ac.il/en/technion-israel-institute-of-technology/">Israeli Institute of Technology</a>. His team has studied the impact of 50 varieties of cannabis on 200 different cancer cells.

“There is a large body of scientific data which indicates that cannabinoids specifically inhibit cancer cell growth and promote cancer cell death,” said Dr. Meiri.

Professor Burkhard Hinz of <a href="https://www.med.uni-rostock.de/en/?no_cache=1">Rostock University Medical Center</a> is a co-author of the current study.

“There is still a need for additional anti-cancer drugs. In this context accumulating data from preclinical models suggest that cannabinoids elicit anti-cancer effects on several levels of cancer progression," said Professor Hinz.

“Clinical studies are now urgently needed to investigate the impact of cannabinoids on cancer growth and progression in patients.”

Eating fish may lead to a longer life, study reveals. Experts have linked the consumption of fish to a number of incredible health benefits, such as protecting our brains from age-related deterioration and reducing the risk of diabetes. Researchers have now found that a diet rich in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-fish-good-heart/">fish</a> and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids can also lead to a lower risk of premature death.

The investigation was focused on 240,729 men and 180,580 women who were followed for 16 years. During the study period, 54,230 men and 30,882 women died. A very strong association was identified between fish and omega-3 fatty acid intake and lower mortality.

When the researchers compared men who ate fish often with those who rarely or never ate fish, they found that men with fish in their diets had a nine-percent lower mortality rate overall and a 37-percent lower risk of dying from chronic liver disease.

In addition, males who reported that they regularly ate fish had a ten-percent lower risk of fatal cardiovascular disease, a six-percent lower risk of death from cancer, and a 20-percent lower chance of death from respiratory disease. Eating fish may lead to a longer life, study reveals

Among females who ate more fish, the team found an 8-percent lower overall mortality risk, a 10-percent lower risk of fatal cardiovascular disease, and a 38-percent reduced risk of death from Alzheimer's disease.


While the consumption of fried fish was not found to influence mortality in men, the consumption of fried fish was linked to an increased risk of mortality from all causes, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disease in women. 

The study also revealed that long-chain omega-3 fatty acid intake reduced the incidence of fatal cardiovascular disease among men by 15 percent and by 18 percent among women.

The study is published in the <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/13652796">Journal of Internal Medicine</a>.

Just the scent of coffee can improve your analytical thinking. A new study from the <a href="https://www.stevens.edu/">Stevens Institute of Technology</a> has revealed that the smell of coffee can improve our ability to think logically. The scent of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coffee-drinkers-lower-risk-death/">coffee</a> was found to boost performance on the analytical part of a test known as the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT).

"It's not just that the coffee-like scent helped people perform better on analytical tasks, which was already interesting,” said study lead author Professor Adriana Madzharov. “But they also thought they would do better, and we demonstrated that this expectation was at least partly responsible for their improved performance.” Just the scent of coffee can improve your analytical thinking

The aroma of decaffeinated coffee was found to produce effects similar to drinking caffeinated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-tea-and-coffee-lower-the-risk-of-fatal-cardiovascular-events/">coffee</a>, suggesting that the scent of coffee acts like a placebo.


The investigation was focused on around 100 undergraduate business students, who were divided into two groups. The participants were tasked with completing a 10-question GMAT algebra test in a computer lab.


One group of students took the test in a lab that was filled with a coffee-like scent, while a control group took the same test in an unscented lab. The study revealed that the group in the scented room scored significantly higher on the test.


Professor Madzharov and her team designed a follow-up survey to explore whether the results could be explained by an expectation that smelling coffee would lead to increased alertness and improved performance.

This phase of the research was focused on 200 different individuals, who reported on their perception of how various scents may influence performance.

The participants believed that they would feel more energetic and alert in the presence of a coffee scent. The individuals also reported that exposure to the smell of coffee would enhance their ability to complete mental tasks.

“Olfaction is one of our most powerful senses,” said Professor Madzharov. “Employers, architects, building developers, retail space managers and others, can use subtle scents to help shape employees' or occupants' experience with their environment. It's an area of great interest and potential.”

The study established in the <a href="https://www.journals.elsevier.com/journal-of-environmental-psychology/">Journal of Environmental Psychology</a>.

Nitrates used to cure processed meats like beef jerky may cause mania even in people without psychological disorders. 

Researchers from <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/">John Hopkins Medicine</a> found that people who were hospitalized for a manic episode were more than three times as likely to have previously eaten nitrate-cured meats than people without a history of a serious <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/magic-mushrooms-psychiatric-therapies/">psychiatric disorders. </a>

The study, published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, included a review of health, demographic, and dietary data on a little over 1,000 people ages 18-65 and experiments with rats who were fed nitrate cured jerky. 

There is a wide range of underlying genetic risk factors that are linked to manic episodes, however researchers have been also been looking to environmental factors to see how diet or lifestyle habits affect certain psychiatric conditions. 

This recent research supports previous theories that diets and different gut bacteria can increase the risk of mania. 

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/risk-bipolar-disorder-faster-aging/">Bipolar</a> disorder affects around 1 to 3 percent of the United States population, and according to one study creates a heavy economic toll costing an estimated 25 billion dollars a year in health care costs. 

Identifying risk factors like diet could go a long way in reducing the risk of manic episodes for people diagnosed with bipolar and other mania associated disorders. 

“Future work on this association could lead to dietary interventions to help reduce the risk of manic episodes in those who have bipolar disorder or who are otherwise vulnerable to mania,” said Robert Yolken, the lead author of the study.  

Yolken and his colleagues first examined data from 1,101 people, some of who had psychiatric disorders from 2007 to 2017. 

After reviewing and analyzing the data, the researchers found that eating nitrate cured meats correlated with an increased risk of hospitalization for mania. 

The researchers then conducted a series of experiments on rats to better explain the association between nitrates and mania. 

Rats were divided into two groups and one group was given normal food while the other was fed normal rat chow along with nitrate prepared beef jerky every other day. The rats that ate the jerky soon exhibited irregular sleeping patterns and hyperactivity. 

The researchers then worked with a beef jerky company to create nitrate free dried beef and again a group of rats was split into two groups. One group ate the store bought nitrate beef jerky and the other ate the nitrate free version. 

Those rats that ate the nitrate free jerky showed no abnormal symptoms or signs of mania but the group that ate the store-bought kind did. 

The researchers also tested the gut bacteria of the different groups of rats and those who had consumed the nitrate jerky had different gut bacteria than the other groups of rats. There were also differences in the molecular pathways of the brain in the rats that ate store-bought beef jerky. 

The results show that nitrate cured meats may be linked to manic episodes however the researchers caution against any such direct correlations. 

Rather the study calls for further research to explore how diet can impact psychiatric disorders. 

 “There's growing evidence that germs in the intestines can influence the brain,” said Yolken. “And this work on nitrates opens the door for future studies on how that may be happening.”

Most reasonable people would agree that being a teacher is a tough job. You spend an entire day helping kids learn, when most of them would rather be outside running around than be stuck inside a classroom. That is why it is imperative teachers be given all the tools they need to teach properly and effectively, including being taught themselves how to best educate our youth.

Now, a new study has revealed the focusing on positive behavior rather than jumping to small disruptions improves the conduct of students.

The study, led by the <a href="https://medicine.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter Medical School</a> has been published in <a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/psychological-medicine">Psychological Medicine</a>, analyzed the success of a training program called the Incredible Years® Teacher Classroom Management Programme. This program is based around building a strong social relationship between teachers and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/kids-abuse-animals-abused/">children</a>, encouraging teachers to focus on relationship building, age appropriate motivation, proactive management of bad behavior, and acknowledgement of good behavior.

The outcomes of this project were measured using a combination of questionnaires completed by teachers, parents, and children. The children’s academic attainment and use of NHS and social services were also assessed. Furthermore, independent observers sat in on lessons in some of the schools that participated, without knowing whether or not the teachers had undergone this training. 

Results showed that teachers found the training to be useful, and led to improvements in students’ mental health, behavior, and concentration. Observers in the classroom noted that it changed students’ behavior and improved compliance. 

“Our findings suggest that this training potentially improves all children’s mental health but it’s particularly exciting to see the larger benefit on the children who were initially struggling,” says Tamsin Ford, a professor at the University of Exeter Medical School. “These effects might be larger were this training offered to all teachers and teaching assistants. Let’s remember that training one teacher potentially benefits every child that they subsequently teach. Our study offers evidence that we should explore this training further as a whole school approach.”

The most common and persistent mental health condition within schools is severe behavior problems amongst children. A child with “conduct disorder” is at risk of mental health conditions as an adult, along with poor educational and social outcomes.

“This training helped us to use techniques to raise the profile of positive behavior and diminish the emphasis placed on low level disruptive behavior,” explains Kate Holden, a teacher at Ipplepen Primary School. “Consistent clear rewards and sanctions highlighted expectations in a manageable and positive framework and preserved the high-quality relationships which underpin the whole ethos. This is far from woolly or accepting of poor behavior. it is actually proactive and highly effective when used correctly in conjunction with a model to support behavior across the whole school.”

Improving education through programs such as this, and studies that test their effectiveness, can only help to better serve our children and the teachers who educate them. Refining the way teachers run the classroom may take some time on a larger scale, but these initial results are encouraging.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes a new map of Mars that is providing insight into the planet’s watery past. The map also reveals where future missions could safely land on Mars.&nbsp;



The map has been created over the last decade using observations of water-rich rocks and mineral deposits. The images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.



"A big surprise is the prevalence of these minerals, with the map revealing hundreds of thousands of water-affected locations in the oldest parts of the planet," says ESA. "The new data will help answer exciting questions about Mars’ climate history, whether water was globally persistent or confined to short, intense episodes, and whether the conditions were ever suitable for life."



"Specifically, the map shows the locations and abundances of aqueous minerals. These are from rocks that have been chemically altered by the action of water in the past, and have typically been transformed into clays and salts."



According to John Carter of the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), our collective understanding of Mars has been oversimplified. He explained that planetary scientists have tended to think that only a few types of clay minerals on Mars were created during its wet period, then as the water gradually dried up, salts were produced across the planet.



The new map shows that the composition of Mars is much more complicated than what we thought. For example, while many salts formed after Martian clays, there are some salts that are presumed to be older than some of the clays.&nbsp;



“The evolution from lots of water to no water is not as clear cut as we thought, the water didn’t just stop overnight. We see a huge diversity of geological contexts, so that no one process or simple timeline can explain the evolution of the mineralogy of Mars. That’s the first result of our study. The second is that if you exclude life processes on Earth, Mars exhibits a diversity of mineralogy in geological settings just as Earth does,” said Carter.

The experts found that the muscle metabolism of cavefish has been genetically reprogrammed over time. As a result, the animals have experienced major changes in their morphology and behavior. Despite these changes, however, the cavefish remain healthy and fit.



The research may provide new clues about the evolutionary consequences of prolonged physical inactivity in humans.&nbsp;



“It’s no surprise that people are moving less and less as technology has advanced,” said Rohner. “With cavefish, we have a unique system where we can study what might happen if people remained couch potatoes over very, very long periods of time.”

Rising sea levels pose one of the biggest societal threats associated with climate change. According to ESA, satellite altimeter missions such as Copernicus Sentinel-6 are essential in monitoring global and regional changes in sea level.



"Unbeknown to many, the island of Crete, Greece, plays an important role in the Copernicus satellite altimetry constellation and on an international stage," reports ESA.



"Satellite altimetry data have to be continuously monitored at the ESA’s Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration where different techniques have pioneered the use of transponders to provide the best measurements to validate satellite altimeters in space soon after launch."



Dr. Craig Donlon explains that, by understanding planet Earth through satellite measurements, we are able to find evidence of change.&nbsp;
