The scorching heatwaves we experience, the wildfires that rage across nations, and the invisible carbon dioxide that fills the air are severely impacting our planet.



In 2023, the world saw extreme heatwaves that fueled substantial wildfires and induced severe droughts across the globe. 



What's more, these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fast-wildfires-are-gaining-even-more-speed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">adverse conditions</a> significantly weakened the land's ability to absorb atmospheric carbon. 



The result? A notable surge in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, growing the scale of concern about accelerating climate change.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heat-and-atmospheric-carbon">Heat and atmospheric carbon </h2>



Data from Hawaii's <a href="https://gml.noaa.gov/obop/mlo/aboutus/aboutus.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mauna Loa Observatory</a> showed that atmospheric carbon concentrations skyrocketed by an alarming 86% in 2023 compared to 2012. This increase sets a new record high since tracking of these levels began in 1958.



Interestingly, the rise in carbon dioxide levels cannot solely be pointed towards fossil fuel emissions. These, it seems, only rose by roughly 0.6 percent.



So, what's the primary culprit behind the spike in emissions? It's likely due to weakened <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-fire-risk-has-grown-exponentially-in-a-hotter-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon absorption</a> by natural ecosystems.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-weakened-carbon-sink">Weakened carbon sink </h2>



An international team of scientists backed by the <a href="https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/Extreme_heat_weakens_land_s_power_to_absorb_carbon" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a> Science for Society Near-Realtime Carbon Extremes project - along with the Climate Change Initiative RECCAP-2 project - set out to investigate the root causes of this event.



The experts used global vegetation models and satellite data to expedite a carbon budget report for 2023.



Land typically absorbs about one-third of human-generated carbon dioxide emissions. However, in 2023, this absorption capacity fell to a mere one-fifth of its usual level, marking the weakest performance by land carbon sink in two decades.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-heat-and-carbon-storage-capacity">Extreme heat and carbon storage capacity </h2>



“Our research shows that 30% of this decline was driven by the extreme heat of 2023, which fueled massive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ultrafine-particles-in-wildfire-smoke-change-weather-patterns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildfires</a> that ravaged vast areas of Canadian forest and triggered severe drought across parts of the Amazon rainforest," said Philippe Ciais, a scientist from France’s Laboratory for Climate and Environmental Sciences.



"These fires and droughts led to substantial vegetation loss, weakening the land ecosystem’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide. This was further compounded by a particularly strong El Niño, which historically reduces the carbon absorption capacity in the Tropics."

Widespread wildfires across Canada and droughts in the Amazon in 2023 released nearly the same amount of carbon to the atmosphere as North America's total fossil fuel emissions. 



This finding highlights the severe impact of climate change on natural ecosystems.



The Amazon rainforest, one of the planet's most essential carbon sinks, is showing signs of long-term distress. Some regions of the Amazon that no longer absorb carbon have shifted into net sources of carbon emissions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-declining-capacity-to-absorb-carbon">Earth's declining capacity to absorb carbon </h2>



The declining capacity of Earth's land ecosystems to absorb carbon dioxide may signify that these natural carbon sinks are nearing their limits. 



They won't be able to continue to provide the mitigation service of absorbing half of human-induced carbon dioxide emissions.



"Consequently, achieving safe global warming limits will require even more ambitious emission reductions than previously anticipated," Ciais adds.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-saving-earth-s-carbon-cycle">Saving Earth's carbon cycle</h2>



The study also highlights that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-models-underestimate-sea-ice-melt-and-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">current climate models</a> might be underestimating the pace and impact of extreme events such as droughts and fires on the degradation of these crucial carbon reservoirs.



"Understanding the knock-on effects of climate change on the carbon cycle is imperative, and the two ESA study projects demonstrate the importance of Earth observation in developing methodologies to provide rapid assessment of these impacts globally," said Stephen Plummer, <a href="https://www.esa.int/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a> Earth Observation Applications Scientist.



"These results are particularly alarming, especially considering the difficulty the world is having limiting warming to 1.5°C, as laid out in the Paris Agreement," noted Clement Albergel, ESA’s Acting Head of the Actionable Climate Information Section.



Given these alarming revelations, it's vital that we ask ourselves: how can we contribute to mitigating these effects? Can we consume less, recycle more, and seek out greener alternatives in our daily lives? The need for climate action could not be more urgent.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://academic.oup.com/nsr/advance-article/doi/10.1093/nsr/nwae367/7831648?login=false" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Science Review</a>.

Long-forgotten records are providing scientists with a house-by-house look at a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Puerto Rico in 1918.

The handwritten requests by residents for funds to repair their homes following the 7.3 magnitude were stored in the San Juan archives.

In the journal <a href="http://srl.geoscienceworld.org/">Seismological Research Letters,</a> seismologists Roland LaForge and William McCann describe how they used the records to trace the impact of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eastern-tennessee-seismic-zone/">earthquake</a> in Aguadilla, the town closest to the quake’s epicenter.

The letters provide a "pretty accurate picture to find out where the damage was, and how far the tsunami made it inland," said LaForge.

The findings are consistent with a 1919 reconnaissance of the earthquake damage but the new study provides more detailed "ground truth" of what happened, said LaForge. The information could be useful in predicting which parts of Aguadilla and Puerto Rico would be mostly likely to suffer damage during the next major earthquake.

The quake and tsunami killed more than 100 people and inflicted $4 million in damage in 1918 dollars.

Residents submitted petitions for repair funds to a Special Earthquake Commission established after the event. Inspectors reviews the damage claims, and funds were awarded based on their recommendations.

The researchers studied more than 6,000 pages of the petitions. There were 275 petitions filed in Aguadilla but only 88 (32%) were discovered in the archives. Most of these appear to be petitions to repair damage rather than replacement of entire homes.

"The layout of the town is pretty much the same as it was in 1918," LaForge said. "And we had these detailed damage descriptions by neighborhood and street and address in some cases. We thought if we can match up these addresses with modern-day addresses to know where they were, we could get a pretty good picture of where the damage was and how severe it was."

The petition data has been digitized and LaForge hopes it will be a tool for other researchers to use to learn more about the earthquake and tsunami impact in other towns such as Mayagüez.

"The dataset in general is a real gold mine," he said.

Habitat affects skin bacteria in a frog species in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, according a new study.

The composition of microbes on the frog’s skin can vary based on environmental conditions such as solar radiation temperature, according to the <a href="http://www5.usp.br/english/?lang=en">University of São Paulo</a> study.

Researchers collected microbe samples from four frog species in both continuous and fragmented portions of the Atlantic Forest. The researchers obtained cultures of bacteria from 188 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/frogs-highly-evolved-skeletons/">frogs</a>, and then examined the cultures for diversity and antimicrobial potential.

One frog species, Proceratophrys boiei, had microbe diversity that was more than twice as high in continuous forest than in forest fragments.

Its bacterial density varied between these forests. However, microbe diversity did not vary in the other three species. That suggests that variation is due to factors intrinsic to individual species and their habitats, the authors said.

Skin bacteria can help protect amphibians, the study said. Some bacteria produce antimicrobial compounds that inhibit pathogens.

In the four frog species, the researchers detected antimicrobial activity in 27 bacterial morphotypes.

The Proceratophrys boiei species had the greatest number of antimicrobial morphotypes, which probably reflects its exposure to soil bacteria species, many of which produce antibiotics, the study said.

Although the overall health of oceans globally has been stable over the last five years, it declined in many Arctic and sub-Arctic countries, a new study found.

Improvements in wild-caught fishery management, the creation of marine protected areas, and decreases in harvesting of fish and other natural products may have stabilized ocean health scores in some regions, according to the study by Benjamin Halpern of the <a href="https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/">University of California</a> Santa Barbara.

Declines in Arctic and sub-Arctic countries may be the result of rapid loss of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-ice-and-salty-snow-impact-air-pollution-in-the-arctic/">sea ice</a> which reduced coastal protection, the study said. 

Halpern and his colleagues analyzed five years' worth of Ocean Health Index data for 220 countries. The index measures factors such as biodiversity, coastal protection, and clean waters.

“One of the things that's so powerful about the Ocean Health Index is that it allows you to compare the health of oceans any place on the planet, over time, with a directly comparable measure," said Halpern. "You can ask some of the most basic yet most important questions about the state of our planet: how are the oceans doing, and what factors are driving changes in ocean health. We can finally start answering those questions."

The index can predict short-term changes in global ocean health, but additional resources for measuring changes on a global scale would greatly help with management and protection of ocean health now and in the future, the authors said.

The study was published in the journal <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/">PLOS ONE</a>.

Study: Ocean health stable, with some exceptions

A new study is shedding light on the economic value of mollusc shells. The seafood industry dumps over 7 million tons of the shells in landfills or in the sea every year. Researchers are developing plans that will put these biomaterials to good use. 

Dr. James Morris and a team of CACHE researchers from the <a href="https://www.naturalsciences.be/">Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences</a> are exploring  environmentally and economically sustainable options for mollusc shells.

"Mollusc shells are viewed by the aquaculture and seafood industries as 'nuisance waste' and largely disposed of in landfills", said Dr. Morris. "Not only is this an expensive and ecologically harmful practice, it is a colossal waste of potentially useful biomaterials".

Dr. Morris and his team are proposing the use of discarded shells to redevelop damaged oyster reefs and cultivate the growth of new oysters. Oyster reef restoration is not expensive or difficult, and it provides invaluable ecological benefits.

"Healthy shellfish populations can have many benefits to the environment: cleaning the water, providing a complex structure for other organisms to call home, and also acting as a coastal protection structure," explained Dr Morris.

Mollusc shells are over 95 percent calcium carbonate, and have many useful applications. Calcium carbonate can be used to develop cement mix and treat wastewater. It can also be fed to hens as a calcium supplement and used by <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/maryland-farmers-cover-crops/">farmers</a> to control soil acidity.

Limestone mining is the world's main source of calcium carbonate, and it is not an environmentally friendly or sustainable practice. Dr. Morris and his team hope to reduce limestone mining by recycling mollusc shells as a secondary source of calcium carbonate.

"Reusing shell waste is a perfect example of a circular economy, particularly as shells are a valuable biomaterial, not only does it improve the sustainability of the aquaculture industry moving forwards, but it can also provide secondary economic benefits to shellfish growers and processors as well," said Dr. Morris.

Dr. Morris believes eliminating tons of mollusc shell waste every year will be advantageous in many ways. 

"The proper disposal procedure for shell waste is in landfill, which costs a lot of money and can be a big burden for shellfish farmers and seafood producers," said Dr Morris."Simply finding a use for shells to avoid taking them to a landfill already has economic value!"

How sea shells could be a source of sustainable biomaterials

It is common sense to assume that flushing dangerous chemicals down the drain could negatively impact wildlife down the line. But according to a new study from the <a href="http://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>, flushing contraceptives and cleaning products is actually turning male fish transgender.

The team of researchers studied freshwater fish at 50 different locations across the UK and found that 20 percent of male fish had feminine characteristics. They also found that the offspring of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/500-year-old-fish-trap-alaska/">fish</a> were more susceptible to being chemically altered themselves. 

The chemicals in these products and contraceptives, like the birth control pill, work very much like the human hormone oestrogen. The chemicals cause male river fish to have reduced sperm production and even prompte the production of eggs.

Over 200 different chemicals from sewage plants were found to have these kinds of transgender effects, and also altered the fish’s behavior. 

Fish who had ingested these chemicals were typically found to be less aggressive and competitive. 

“We are showing that some of these chemicals can have much wider health effects on fish that we expected,” said Professor Charles Tyler from the University of Exeter. “Using specially created transgenic fish that allow us to see responses to these chemicals in the bodies of fish in real time, for example, we have shown that oestrogens found in some plastics affect the valves in the heart.”

In addition to contraceptives and cleaning products, plastics, cosmetics, and antidepressants were also found to release these kinds of chemicals.

Chemicals flushed down the drain are creating transgender fish

It is common sense to assume that flushing dangerous chemicals...

Modern cement concrete – typically known as “Portland” concrete – is made using rock aggregate along with sand and gravel particles that are intended to be inert. This means that some reactions with the cement paste amy form gels that expand and cause the concrete to crack. “This alkali-silica reaction occurs throughout the world and it’s one of the main causes of destruction of Portland cement concrete structures,” says <a href="https://www.utah.edu/">University of Utah</a> geologist Marie Jackson. When Jackson spent a sabbatical year in Rome, she noticed that Roman concrete was much more durable than our modern concrete. While there, she began study volcanic ash deposits, as she knew the Romans made their concrete by mixing volcanic ash with lime and seawater to make mortar, before introducing rock aggregate.

After returning, she and her colleagues began to further study the factors that caused this resilience in Roman concrete. The research team had noticed that modern marine concrete structures tend to fall apart within decades, while 2,000-year-old Roman piers and breakwaters still stand today – and are even stronger than when they were first built.

In the year A.D. 79, Roman author Pliny the Elder wrote in his Naturalis Historia that as concrete structures in harbors were exposed to the constant beating of saltwater <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weather-patterns-cause-more-heat-waves/">waves</a>, they became “a single stone mass, impregnable to the waves and every day stronger.” And he wasn’t wrong.

Jackson and her colleagues discovered that seawater leaking into the concrete caused the growth of interlocking minerals within the structure, adding to the material’s cohesion. The combination of ash, water, and quicklime causes a “pozzolanic reaction,” which is named after the city of Pozzuoli in the Bay of Naples. 

Another factor the researchers found was that the mineral intergrowths between the aggregate and the mortar stop cracks from getting bigger. In contrast, the surfaces of nonreactive aggregates in Portland cement actually expedite the growth of cracks.

Through analysis of drill cores of Roman harbor concrete, they found that the seawater filtering through the concrete actually dissolved components of volcanic ash and led to new minerals growing from the highly alkaline mixture. The minerals that grew there were mainly Al-tobermorite (a rarely synthesized mineral) and phillipsite. Both minerals have silica-rich compositions, creating crystals that actually reinforce the cementing matrix.

Jackson was surprised by these findings, as this corrosion-like process would normally be a detriment to modern materials. “We’re looking at a system that’s contrary to everything one would not want in cement-based concrete,” she says. “We’re looking at a system that thrives in open chemical exchange with seawater.”

So now that we’ve found this ancient concrete that performs so well in seawater-soaked conditions, we should start using it in certain construction projects, right? Unfortunately, the recipe for this concrete was lost long ago.

Jackson is currently working with geological engineer Tom Adams to create a new version of this recipe – except this time using materials from the western United States. She and her colleagues intend to continue their research on this front, potentially furthering our understanding of how to build longer-lasting concrete structures by the sea.

How seawater helps Ancient Roman concrete outlast modern concrete

Toxic chemicals found in the soil as a result of human activities can cause major issues for the development and growth of plants. But now, researchers have discovered two genes in baker's yeast that are capable of increasing plant resistance to a broad range of contaminants. This could allow plants and crops to thrive despite soil pollution. 

Soil contamination is due in large part to heavy metals and organic pollutants that are leaked during industrial activity. Soil is also frequently polluted by improper use of pesticides and other agricultural chemicals. A research team led by Paula Duque from the <a href="http://www.igc.gulbenkian.pt/">Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia</a> took a new approach to this environmental issue by analyzing the properties of baker's yeast, most commonly used for making bread and beer. 

"Current strategies to decontaminate soils are very expensive and not so effective. The scientific community has been looking for alternative strategies to make plants more resilient to toxic compounds,” said Duque. “A possible solution may lie in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a species of yeast used for baking, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/probiotic-beer-helps-gut/">brewing</a>, and winemaking.”

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is known to be resistant to herbicide and other chemicals. Isabel Sa-Correia of the <a href="https://www.ulisboa.pt/en/">Universidade de Lisboa</a> and her colleagues identified two genes that give this particular species of yeast its resistance. Duque’s team put the two genes to the test on a small flowering plant known as Arabidopsis thaliana. 

"These two yeast genes produce proteins that are able to expel molecules from cells. So we hypothesized that they could play a similar role in plants, eliminating toxic molecules and allowing normal growth,” said Duque.

The researchers discovered that once either of the two yeast genes were inserted, the plants became more resistant to herbicides, fungicides and heavy metals. These plants were able to grow and develop significantly better with the modifications.

The study, published in Scientific Reports, will continue with further testing of the Arabidopsis thaliana and other plant species. The team hopes to extend the application of the genes to major crops. Duque expressed that the findings of this study “hold much promise to help solve a difficult environmental problem."

Baker’s yeast could help battle soil contamination

Sea spray is more than just a pretty natural phenomena. Its ability to absorb water can also offer some clues about the health of the Earth’s climate.

The sea spray produced by the world’s oceans is one of the largest natural sources of aerosols on the planet. These aerosolized ocean particles drift up to the atmosphere, where they play a role in scattering and absorbing sunlight, forming clouds, and counteract the effects of warming.

"It is widely understood that aerosols have a net cooling effect on climate, counteracting the warming caused by greenhouse gases,” said Dr. Matt Salter of Stockholm University, a co-author of a new study of sea spray. “However, the magnitude of this cooling is highly uncertain, in part due to knowledge gaps in how natural aerosol particles interact with solar radiation and clouds.”

The study examined sea spray’s hygroscopicity – the measurement of its ability to absorb or release water as a function of humidity. Spray is not just made up of water and salt, but also bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other organic matter from the oceans. All of these additions affect ocean spray’s hygroscopicity.

The international study focused on the inorganic salts found in ocean spray and their ability to absorb water. Experiments in a controlled laboratory showed that sea spray has much lower ability to absorb water than pure sodium chloride, which is often used as a stand-in in climate models. In other words, climate models may be overestimating the effectiveness of sea spray in absorbing water.

“This finding has implications for the role of sea spray aerosols in climate, especially on how they interact with solar radiation, " said Dr. Paul Zieger, another of the study’s co-authors, in a press release.

However, part of the reason sea salts absorb less water than sodium chloride may be because, by definition, sea spray already contains water. 

The study helps to add to research on aerosols – both natural and man-made – and their effects on Earth’s climate, Salter said.

The study will be published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

Sea spray offers clues into the health of Earth's climate

Sea spray is more than just a pretty natural phenomena....

The heat reached an all-time high in Iran on Thursday when the temperature hit 129 degrees Fahrenheit in the southwestern city of Ahvaz. The unprecedented heat also set a June record for Asia, and is one of the hottest <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/hottest-year-2016-record/">temperatures</a> ever recorded in the world.

French meteorologist Etienne Kapikian said the temperature reached 128.7 degrees Fahrenheit, beating Iran's hottest known temperature of 127.4. According to <a href="https://www.wunderground.com/">Weather Underground</a>, the temperature in Ahvaz peaked at 129.2 degrees with a heat index of 142 degrees.

The official start of summer brought extreme heat to the southwestern United States last week. Flights were grounded and wildfires spread as the region experienced a dangerous heat wave.

The temperature in Phoenix, Arizona, topped out at 119. Phoenix had five days with temperatures hotter than 115 degrees. Record-breaking overnight “<a href="http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix-weather/2017/06/19/phoenix-arizona-weather-hot-temperature/408857001/">lows</a>” for Wednesday and Thursday were 90 and 91 degrees respectively, exceeding the 2016 record minimum temperature of 89 degrees. As many as <a href="https://www.google.com/amp/s/weather.com/amp/news/news/phoenix-arizona-heat-wave-deaths.html">12 deaths</a> in the area are believed to be heat-related.

Needles, California reached its record high of 125 degrees while Palm Springs, California, got nearly as hot at 122 degrees. Death Valley, California experienced heat up to 125 degrees. Death Valley set the record for the hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth in July of 1913 at a scorching 134 degrees Fahrenheit. 

The Weather Channel predicts temperatures in southwestern United States will remain well above average in July. Southeastern regions of the United States, however, are projected to experience below average temperatures during the month of July.

Iran hits one of the hottest temperatures recorded on Earth

The heat reached an all-time high in Iran on Thursday...

A surge in the use of plastic bottles will create an environmental crisis that some predict will be “as serious as climate change,” the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/">Guardian</a> newspaper reported.

The demand is equivalent to about 20,000 bottles being bought every second and is thought to be driven by ”an apparently insatiable desire for bottled water and the spread of a western, urbanised ‘on the go’ culture to China and the Asia Pacific region,” the story said.

More than 480 billion plastic drinking bottles were sold in 2016 worldwide, up from about 300 billion a decade ago, the Guardian reported.

“If placed end to end, they would extend more than halfway to the sun,” according to the story.

By 2021, the number could even increase to 583.3 billion, according to <a href="https://www.marketresearch.com/Euromonitor-International-v746/">Euromonitor International</a>’s global packaging trends report.

As the use of plastic bottles continues to soar, efforts to recycle them and prevent them from polluting the oceans are failing to keep up.

Less than half of the bottles bought in 2016 were collected for recycling, and just 7 percent of those collected were turned into new bottles, the story said. 

Most plastic bottles end up in landfills or oceans.

People who eat seafood end up ingesting up to 11,000 tiny pieces of plastic every year, according to scientists at <a href="https://www.ugent.be/en">Ghent University</a> in Belgium. Plastic was found in a third of fish caught in the UK including cod, haddock, mackerel and shellfish, according to a study by <a href="https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/">Plymouth University.</a>

“Shifting to a real circular economy for plastics is a massive opportunity to close the loop, save billions of dollars, and decouple plastics production from fossil fuel consumption,” said<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/sport/ellen-macarthur"> Ellen MacArthur</a>, a yachtswoman who campaigns for plastic bottles to be are reused, refilled, and recycled.

Last year, the<a href="http://www.efsa.europa.eu/"> European Food Safety Authority</a> called for urgent research “given the potential for microplastic pollution in edible tissues of commercial fish,” the Guardian reported.

The largest field study to date concludes that widely used pesticides called neonicotinoids weakened honeybee hives in Europe.

Researchers planted about 7.7 square miles of rapeseed, which is used to make cooking oil. Some of the seeds were treated with pesticides and others weren’t.

Beehives in Hungary and England near fields with pesticide-treated seeds had lower survival rates than those with non-pesticide seeds, the study found. In Hungary, the honeybee colonies near treated fields had 24 percent fewer worker bees the next spring when compared to those near untreated crops.

In Germany, however, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/east-african-honey-bees/">bees</a> did not seem to be harmed by the pesticide-treated seeds. An analysis of the pollen determined that German bees were healthier to start with, with a broader diet that included less of the pesticide-treated seeds, said study director Richard Pywell. The German bee diet was only 10 percent from neonicotinoid-treated plants, compared to more than 50 percent in Hungary and Great Britain, he said.

The study was published Thursday in the journal <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>.

If hives weakened by disease, parasites, or bad diet, neonicotinoids push them "over the edge," said Pywell, a scientist at the <a href="https://www.ceh.ac.uk/">Center for Ecology and Hydrology</a> in England. 

Researchers couldn’t calculate the exact impact of the insecticide because so many of the hives died, in both treated and untreated fields.

Wild bees were also weakened by the insecticide, the study found. One neonicotinoid brand seemed to be more harmful to both wild bees and honeybees.

Europe banned neonicotinoids in 2013 and researchers needed a special exemption for the study. Another study also cites problems with neonicotinoids in Canada.

Although the studies reveal neonicotinoids harm bees, they still may not quite be the leading cause of bee losses, <a href="https://www.umd.edu/">University of Maryland</a> entomologist Dennis vanEngelsdorp, who wasn't involved in the study, told AP.

"The problem remains complex, like cancer," vanEngelsdorp said.

Neonicotinoids makers Bayer and Syngenta, which make neonicotinoids, funded the European study but had no control over the results or the published paper, Pywell added.

Company officials pointed to the results in Germany and the lack of harm to hives there.

"The study shows that when hives are healthy and relatively disease free and when bees have access to diverse forage, neonics do not pose a danger to colony health," Bayer spokesman Jeffrey Donald told AP.

Syngenta's Peter Campbell, head of research collaborations, said the study "strongly suggests the effects of neonicotinoids are a product of interacting factors."

World Heritage Sites are landmarks recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO. These sites are legally safeguarded by international treaties. Natural World Heritage Sites, or NWHS, are those which contain the world’s most valuable natural assets. A recent evaluation of the Natural World Heritage Sites determined that only 1.8 percent of wilderness that exists within these sites is currently protected.

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uq.edu.au/">University of Queensland</a> analyzed the current state of  NWHS habitats across the globe.  The study concluded that urgent attention is needed from UNESCO to initiate the conservation of wilderness areas contained in Natural World Heritage Sites.

James Allan is a University of Queensland PhD student in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and lead author of the study.

"Globally important wilderness areas are increasingly being shown as not only strongholds for endangered biodiversity, but critical in the fight to abate climate change, for regulating local climates, and supporting many of the world's most culturally diverse but politically and economically marginalised communities," said Allan.

While some sites including Okavango Delta in <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/earth-space-botswana/">Botswana</a> and Purnululu National Park in Australia were found to have exceptional wilderness coverage, the team discovered broad gaps in wilderness coverage in the UN-declared landmarks across the globe. 

"Despite their importance, wilderness areas are being destroyed at an alarming rate and need urgent protection, explained Allan. “The World Heritage Convention has the ability to do this by improving wilderness coverage within Natural World Heritage Sites."

James Watson, senior author of the study, expressed “an urgent need for a global environmental convention to recognize the importance of conserving wilderness before it is too late.”

"The World Heritage Convention can better achieve its own objectives by increasing wilderness coverage within NWHS, which in turn will raise the profile of wilderness conservation globally, and provide wilderness areas with additional protection they need. It is a win-win situation,” said Watson.

Why wilderness regions urgently need the UN’s protection

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="http://www.ntu.edu.sg/">NTU Singapore</a> reveals that some plants can remove toxic heavy metals from soil.&nbsp;



The researchers analyzed samples of various tropical plant species to test for levels of heavy metals and metalloids. The study showed that there are existing plants with high levels of these contaminants, which means that these species are great candidates for drawing pollutants out of the soil.&nbsp;



Among the plants examined in the study, 12 species had accumulated several types of heavy metals and metalloids. These plants are widely available, including species that are native to Singapore.



“In a small nation like Singapore, land may be repurposed to support new development plans, so it is important that we have a green and sustainable way to remediate land that is contaminated," said Professor Lam Yeng Ming.



"We set out to uncover how to better make use of tropical plants to do phytoremediation and through advanced characterization techniques, we showed how some of these tropical plant species can be an environmentally friendly and literally a 'green' way to remove contaminants in soil."&nbsp;



"Phytoremediation also has benefits of cost effectiveness, simplicity of management, aesthetic advantages, and long-term applicability and sustainability. The strategy prevents erosion and metal leaching by stabilizing or accumulating heavy metals, so that helps reduce the risk of contaminant spread.”

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes why herbicides are not as effective in killing weeds anymore. In the 20th century, chemical companies developed thousands of herbicides. The most commonly used herbicide was glyphosate, which was introduced in 1974.



Over the past few decades, dozens of species of weeds have evolved resistance to glyphosate. Depending on the site of action, the part of the plant that an herbicide interacts with, weeds may even be resistant to herbicides that have not been developed yet.&nbsp;



With increasing resistance to glyphosate and other herbicides, weeds are - once again - becoming a major concern for farmers.&nbsp;

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/">NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> (JPL) describes a dust storm on Mars that was nearly twice the size of the United States. As the storm covered the southern hemisphere of the planet, some of NASA’s explorers had to delay their normal activities.



NASA’s Insight lander put itself in a "safe mode" for 11 days to conserve battery power because solar power was disrupted by the dust. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter postponed flights until conditions improved.



"A fleet of NASA orbiters monitor Martian dust storms like this one and serve as lifelines to Earth by relaying data from the rovers and lander on the ground back to the team. This includes the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, MAVEN, and Odyssey," reports JPL.



"Dust storms like this recent one start close to the ground and are spread by wind as they rise – warming the cold Martian atmosphere."



The images in the video were captured by NASA’s Curiosity as the dust rolled in. A fleet of orbiters monitored the dust storm from above, relaying data from Mars’ explorers back to scientists on Earth.

NASA monitors giant dust storms on Mars

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="http://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. This strait provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean.



Qeshm is separated from the Iranian coast by the Clarence Strait, also known as Khuran.&nbsp;The Hara Forest Protected Area is a network of shallow waterways and forest located between the island and the mainland. This protected region is home to sea turtles, snakes, and more than 150 species of migrating birds.



Qeshm is famous for its wide range of&nbsp;ecotourist&nbsp;attractions, such as the&nbsp;Hara marine forests. According to environmentalists, about 1.5 percent of the world birds and 25 percent of Iran's native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/female-hummingbirds-avoid-sexual-harassment-by-looking-like-males/">birds</a> annually migrate to the forests, which are the first national geo park in Iran.



Tourists are also drawn to the island to see an age-old Portuguese&nbsp;fort, historic mosques, the&nbsp;Seyyed Mozaffar&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bibi Maryam&nbsp;shrines, and the "Valley of Stars."



The average temperature on the island is 81 degress and the region is often hot and humid. From June to August, the island is described as being oppressively hot. The ideal time to visit is during the winter season.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Inhambane Bay in southeast Mozambique.&nbsp;



"Inhambane Bay is a deep inlet into which the small Mutamba River flows," says ESA. "On one side of the bay lies the historical city of Inhambane, capital of the Inhambane Province, while the sister city of Maxixe, the economic capital of Inhambane, sits across from it. The province is the second largest grower of cashews, after Nampula, and it also produces coconut and citrus fruits."



The beaches of Barra and Tofo are popular with tourists. There are also coral reefs along the long coastline of Inhambane, making it an ideal destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.



"Mozambique’s extensive coastline heightens the country’s vulnerability to tropical cyclones that develop in the Indian Ocean as well as storm surge flooding," says ESA.



"More than half of the population lives in low lying coastal areas, putting communities at risk. Inhambane Bay was dangerously close to where Cyclone Idai made landfall in 2019 causing widespread destruction to the country."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency </a>&nbsp;features the Kangerlussuaq Glacier, one of the largest tidewater outlet glaciers in Greenland. The glacier is located on the east coast of the Greenland ice sheet.



As human-induced climate change continues to drive up temperatures, global ice loss is accelerating at an alarming rate. ESA reports that, over the past decade alone, 3.5 trillion tons of ice have melted from the Greenland ice sheet. This is enough to cover the UK with meltwater 15 meters deep.



Based on satellite imagery, researchers determined that Kangerlussuaq entered a new phase of rapid retreat and acceleration in 2017. In their study, published in <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feart.2019.00123/full">Frontiers in Earth Science</a>,&nbsp; the experts report that the glacier's ice front is now at its most retreated position since the early 20th century.



"Given Kangerlussuaq’s previous impacts on both the magnitude and pattern of ice sheet wide mass loss, we predict that its new phase of retreat, acceleration and thinning will markedly enhance the south-east region’s contribution to increasing discharge from the ice sheet," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;&nbsp;



"More broadly, accurate forecasting of the ice sheet’s contribution to sea level rise will require a deeper understanding of, and responses to, these non-linear ice dynamic processes."

"Earth’s oceans are huge heat stores, soaking up 93% of the excess heat from human activity over the past 70 years. Ocean currents redistribute heat around the planet, from the Equator to the poles. Where this ocean heat goes influences weather patterns and regional climate," explains ESA.



"As well as absorbing heat, oceans are a natural carbon sink, absorbing a quarter of carbon dioxide emissions from human activity. This has led to the acidification of ocean water, threating marine life."



The amount of heat and carbon dioxide soaked up by the ocean depends on specific variables, including phytoplankton, temperatures, waves, salinity, and ice cover. Satellites can be used to measure these variables from space.



"From their unique vantage point, satellites provide key information for understanding the complexities of our planet and monitoring environmental issues," says ESA.

Ocean heat influences regional climate

These observations have many applications, such as ship routing, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-modem-ocean-is-a-tough-place-for-whales-to-survive/">ocean</a> current forecasting, and debris tracking.



"A project supported by the Discovery element of ESA’s Basic Activities recently investigated a new technique to measure sea surface topography very precisely," reports ESA.



"The technique involves looking at satellite navigation (GNSS) signals that have been reflected off of the sea surface at very low angles. At these so-called grazing angles, waves and surface roughness have very little impact on the reflection process; the sea surface acts as a very smooth mirror."



Estel Cardellach is the principal investigator at the Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia, who first submitted the idea for the project.



“In a mirror-like reflection the phase of the signal can be tracked – it is continuous," said Cardellach. "Different surface heights result in different phase measurements. It gives a very precise measurement of the surface altitude at a few centimetres’ precision.”



The researchers developed a GNSS receiver and set up an experiment in the Balaeric Islands to collect signals from the receiver that were reflected off the sea surface. Ultimately, these signals will provide improved measurements of the shape of the sea surface.

By recording soundscapes, the experts can determine which animals are present through their distinct sounds.&nbsp;



Using this method, sounds can be used as scientific measurements to analyze the effects of deforestation. The researchers will gain a better understanding of how the acoustics of a forest can be used to measure its health.&nbsp;



"From space, parts of the Amazon rainforest that have previously been logged or burned may look lush and green, like a place buzzing with activity and full of sounds. But inside the rainforest, the animal life may tell a different story, of a harsh environment and a quieter soundscape," says NASA.
