The Met Office has issued a dire warning: global warming is accelerating beyond control, pushing Earth off-track from meeting the 1.5°C (2.7°F) target set in the Paris Agreement. 



The latest data shows a rapid rise in carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and record-breaking temperatures - raising serious concerns about the future of our planet.



Scientists warn that without immediate and drastic action, we are heading toward a climate crisis that will be difficult to reverse.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-record-breaking-year-for-global-warming">Record-breaking year for global warming</h2>



The year 2024 officially became the hottest on record, with global average <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/un-the-world-is-on-track-for-a-catastrophic-level-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperatures</a> exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for the first time. This milestone highlights the increasing intensity of climate change and the urgent need for action.

"Last week, it was confirmed that 2024 was the warmest year on record, with annual average temperatures higher than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for the first time," stated Professor Richard Betts, who led the <a href="https://www.metoffice.gov.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Met Office</a>’s forecast.

Although this single year does not yet represent a complete failure to meet the Paris Agreement’s target - since long-term warming trends are the true measure of success - scientists warn that this marks a dangerous turning point.



While 2025 may be slightly cooler due to natural climate variations, the overall warming trend will continue unless CO2 emissions decrease dramatically.



The data aligns with findings from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), which reported that global temperatures in 2024 were 0.12°C (0.22°F) higher than in 2023, the previous record-holding year. This confirms that humanity is now dangerously close to breaching the Paris Agreement’s long-term warming limit.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-very-large-rise-in-co2-levels">Very large rise in CO2 levels </h2>



Perhaps even more concerning than <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2024-confirmed-as-earths-hottest-year-in-recorded-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rising temperatures</a> is the unprecedented increase in atmospheric CO2 levels. 



Measurements taken at Mauna Loa, Hawaii, revealed that CO2 concentrations rose by 3.58 parts per million (ppm) in 2024 - the fastest annual increase since records began in 1958. This increase far exceeded the Met Office’s prediction of 2.84 ppm, highlighting that emissions are outpacing even the worst-case scenarios.



Satellite data further confirmed a "very large rise" in CO2 levels globally. This increase is partly attributed to the El Niño phenomenon, which created widespread hot and dry conditions, reducing the ability of forests and ecosystems to absorb CO2. 



However, human activities - particularly the burning of fossil fuels - remain the primary driver of rising <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rapid-surge-in-global-warming-may-have-an-unexpected-source/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emissions</a> and global warming.



To meet the 1.5°C goal, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (<a href="https://www.ipcc.ch" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IPCC</a>) has stated that CO2 emissions must be reduced by 1.8 ppm per year. Instead, we are seeing an accelerating rise, making it increasingly difficult to stay within safe climate limits.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-natural-climate-patterns">Role of natural climate patterns</h2>



Looking ahead, scientists predict that CO2 levels will continue to rise in 2025, though at a slightly slower rate. 



The Met Office estimates an increase of 2.26 ± 0.56 ppm, which is lower than the extreme rise seen in 2024. This expected decrease is linked to the transition from El Niño to La Niña conditions, which will help ecosystems absorb more CO2.

While this temporary relief may slightly reduce the speed of warming, it is not nearly enough to counteract the long-term accumulation of greenhouse gases. As Betts warns, stabilizing global temperatures will require emissions to not only stop increasing but to reverse entirely.

But this needs urgent action internationally," said Betts.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-global-warming-and-temperature-rise">Long-term global warming and temperature rise</h2>



Although natural climate variations like El Niño contribute to short-term temperature fluctuations, scientists overwhelmingly agree that human activities are the main force behind long-term global warming. 



The continued burning of coal, oil, and gas is releasing vast amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, pushing the planet toward more extreme and unpredictable weather events.

"This record needs to be a reality check. The climate is heating to levels we've spent years trying to avoid because countries are still burning huge amounts of oil, gas and coal," noted Dr. Friederike Otto, a climate policy expert from <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Imperial College London</a>.

This statement highlights the failure of global leaders to take sufficient action to reduce emissions. While renewable energy sources like wind and solar are expanding, they are not replacing fossil fuels quickly enough to prevent further warming.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dire-consequences-of-inaction">Dire consequences of inaction</h2>



If global warming continues at its current pace, the consequences will be severe. 



Rising temperatures contribute to more frequent and intense natural disasters, including heatwaves, wildfires, hurricanes, and flooding. In 2024 alone, extreme weather events linked to climate change caused devastation worldwide.



For example, the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles serve as a grim reminder of what the future could hold if global temperatures continue to rise unchecked. Higher temperatures dry out vegetation, creating the perfect conditions for large, uncontrollable fires.



The rise of global warming also threatens food security, water supplies, and human health. Crops struggle to grow in extreme heat, while changing weather patterns lead to droughts and flooding.



Additionally, air pollution from fossil fuel combustion contributes to respiratory illnesses and premature deaths.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-needs-to-happen-now">What needs to happen now?</h2>



Scientists warn that immediate action is necessary to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The shift to renewable energy is happening, but it must accelerate significantly. 



Governments, businesses, and individuals all have a crucial role to play in addressing climate change. Countries must phase out fossil fuels while expanding clean energy sources.



Protecting and restoring forests, wetlands, and oceans will help absorb more CO2. Reducing energy waste in industries, buildings, and transportation can lower emissions. 



Governments must enforce stricter regulations, support sustainable development, and invest in green technology. Public awareness is essential, as people must understand their impact and choose more sustainable lifestyles.



The world is running out of time to prevent catastrophic global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/co2-has-regulated-earths-climate-for-millions-of-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warming</a>. The warnings from scientists are louder than ever, and the evidence is undeniable. The question remains - will humanity rise to the challenge before it’s too late?

The connection between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-risk-death/">air pollution</a> and cardiovascular and respiratory disease is well known. Exposure to pollutants can irritate the nose, eyes, throat, and lungs, worsening asthma symptoms and increasing the chance of disease. 

However, a new study published in the journal Nature Communications has found that air pollution changes the expression of our genes, and that the influence of pollutants is stronger than the genes we inherit from our parents. 

While previously it was thought that your genetic heritage had the most say over your genes, a research team from the <a href="https://oicr.on.ca/">Ontario Institute for Cancer Research </a>has found that in fact, geography and exposure to air pollution plays a major role.

For example, sulfur dioxide can affect 270 genes associated with asthma and cardiovascular disease. 

The researchers collected blood samples, genetic data, and personal information on 1,007 participants from three different areas in Quebec Province, Montréal, Quebec City, and Saguenay-Lac Saint-Jean. 

Both Quebec City and Montreal are major cities which showed the researchers how pollution in large urban areas differed from the smalle, less populated Saguenay-Lac Saint-Jean. 

The researchers also gathered data on air different air pollutants in the three areas, comparing volume and exposure to pollutants to the genetic makeup and gene expression of the participants. 

No matter the ancestral history, the researchers found pollutants in specific geographic areas had the biggest influence on gene expression. 

“Both genetic variation and gene expression followed something of a geographic cline,” Philip Awadalla, the study’s lead author, told <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-5464857/Fossil-fuels-air-pollution-control-expression-genes.html">Daily Mail</a>. “Leading us to initially think that gene expression was driven by your genotype. In fact, that was largely not the case. Most gene expression variation is associated with where you live rather than your genetic ancestry.”

Awadalla said the researchers considered hundreds of variables that may affect gene expression, but the results consistently pointed to air quality and exposure to pollutants as having the strongest impact.

Air pollution affects genes more even more than inherited DNA

Smoke from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smoke-toxic-gases-wildfires/">wildfires</a> can be harmful to personal health, as the pollutants it contains irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Wildfires are also damaging to the surrounding environment as they can release untold quantities of stored carbon from trees into the atmosphere. 

The negative impact of smoke is well known, but a new study found that surprisingly, smoke mixing with clouds over the Atlantic Ocean has a brightening and cooling effect. 

Smoke from wildfires originating in South Africa may actually contribute to climate cooling because the smoke enhances the reflective capabilities of low-level clouds.  

Researchers led by the <a href="http://www.uwyo.edu/">University of Wyoming </a>conducted the study, which was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 

For the study, the researchers used the<a href="https://nwsc.ucar.edu/"> National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)-Wyoming Supercomputing Center</a> to create high-resolution computational models to show how smoke from South Africa impacted clouds over the Atlantic. 

“If you change the particles, you are changing the composition of the cloud,” said Xiaohong Liu, a corresponding author of the paper. “For our study, we found the smoke comes down and can mix within the clouds. The changed clouds are more reflective of sunlight. Brighter clouds counteract the greenhouse effect. It creates cooling.”

The models showed that carbon dioxide emissions create a greenhouse effect of 1.66 watts per square meter, while smoke from wildfires produces seven watts worth of a cooling effect per square meter over the southeast Atlantic each year. 

During fire season, the smoke created by fires in South Africa is so great that satellite imaging can detect it. Aerosols in the smoke travel westward and mix with low lying clouds over the southeast Atlantic Ocean. 

The aerosols, according to the results of the computational models, form condensation nuclei in the cloud which in turn increases the cloud’s brightness and reflective properties. 

“Our group is the first to quantify this brightening effect,” said Liu. “This (smoke aerosols in clouds) reflects more solar radiation to space, which results in less solar radiation reaching the Earth's surface. This creates a cooling effect.”

Ultimately the results show that smoke and cloud layers are closer together than previously thought.

Next, the researchers hope to quantify the cooling effect of aerosols emitted from other sources besides wildfires.

Smoke from wildfires can create a cooling effect in clouds

Smoke from wildfires can be harmful to personal health, as...

Residents in Cape Town, South Africa, are still counting down to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cape-town-water/">Day Zero</a>, which is now expected to strike in the middle of July. At that time, the city will shut off residential taps and four million people will be forced to stand in lines to collect a daily ration of 6.6 gallons of water.

Day Zero was originally expected to arrive in April, but water conservation measures and a large donation of water to a Cape Town dam have helped to push it back. The dreaded day will officially hit when Cape Town dams are drained down to 13.5 percent.

With the rainy winter season approaching in a couple of months, there is some hope that dam levels will remain high enough to avoid Day Zero altogether. But officials are not likely to lift current water restrictions even if the city does get to keep its water supply running.

Ian Neilson, the city’s executive deputy mayor, said in a statement last month:

“Today I urge the residents of Cape Town not to ease up on their water-saving efforts. We cannot afford to slow down when the estimated Day Zero date moves out, simply because we cannot accurately predict the volume of rainfall still to come or when it will come.”

There is also no guarantee the rainfall will come at all, considering the record drought of the last three years. This drought, which experts believe has been worsened by climate change, combined with population growth and overdevelopment is what disrupted the balance of water supply and demand.

Many residents reportedly ignored voluntary water restrictions for months. In January, officials ordered residents to use no more than 50 liters, or 13.2 gallons, of water a day. 

Cape Town resident Michelle Koton explained to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/">NBC News</a> how her family has cut back on daily activities like flushing and washing clothes, and they now use plastic dishes so there are none to wash. 

“The water-saving measures were fine in the beginning, but month after month the novelty of saving water has worn off and it’s become revolting,” Koton told NBC. “I have learned so much from this experience as to how much we took water for granted and how we wasted so much.”

Cape Town “day zero” pushed to July, but water crisis persists

A study led by <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/">NASA</a> scientist Nicholas Parazoo has revealed that permafrost in the highest northern latitudes of the Arctic will start to thaw within the next few decades, transitioning into a permanent source of carbon. A transformation of this magnitude was not expected to occur during this century, or even the next.

According to the research, the peak transition in the northern Arctic will take place in 40 to 60 years. By the year 2300, carbon emissions from this region will amount to ten times the global man made emissions of 2016. 

Permafrost is a layer of soil that has been frozen for many years underneath topsoil. It contains leaves and other organic material that will decompose as the frost begins to thaw, releasing carbon into the atmosphere in the form of methane and carbon dioxide emissions.

Even though permafrost is already thawing in warmer Arctic areas to the south, scientists do not expect this region to become a carbon source until the late 2100s.

“Permafrost in southern Alaska and southern Siberia is already thawing, so it's obviously more vulnerable,” said Parazoo. “Some of the very cold, stable permafrost in the highest latitudes in Alaska and Siberia appeared to be sheltered from extreme climate change, and we didn't expect much impact over the next couple hundred years.”

The researchers used data on soil temperatures in Alaska and Siberia with a numerical model that calculates carbon emissions as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-republicans-climate-change/">climate changes</a>. They divided the Arctic into two equal areas, including the colder northern region and the warmer southern region.

The model simulation demonstrated that permafrost in the northern region lost about five times more carbon per century compared to that of the south. This is largely due to the fact that there is more permafrost in the northern region. 

The scientists also found that plant growth will increase much faster in the southern part of the Arctic, and these plants will remove enough carbon to maintain a balance until around the end of the 22nd century.

Arctic permafrost to thaw and release carbon this century

The sea level rise that will occur around the world as a result of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oil-companies-climate-change/">climate change</a> has been predicted to submerge many coastal regions around the San Francisco Bay by 2100. However, a recent study published in the online journal <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a> has found that – due to sinking land – the flooding will be even worse than previously thought.

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/">University of California, Berkeley</a> and <a href="https://www.asu.edu/">Arizona State University</a> used precise mapping and measurements of subsidence around the Bay Area from 2007 to 2011 in order to map out the waterfront areas that will be impacted by various estimates of sea level rise in the next 100 years. The results showed that, depending on how fast sea level rises, the regions at risk for flooding may be as much as twice what had been previously estimated just from sea level rise alone.

Past studies of this area did not take subsidence into account, and estimated that between 20 and 160 square miles of San Francisco Bay shoreline are at risk of flooding by the next century. When the effects of sinking ground along the shoreline were added, the researchers found that the area at risk of inundation rose to between 48 and 166 square miles.

“We are only looking at a scenario where we raise the bathtub water a little bit higher and look where the water level would stand,” says Roland Bürgmann, a <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/">UC Berkeley</a> professor of earth and planetary science and senior author of the study. “But what if we have a 100-year storm, or king tides or other scenarios of peak water-level change? We are providing an average; the actual area that would be flooded by peak rainfall and runoff and storm surges is much larger.”

Low-end estimates of flooding are based on conservative predictions of sea level rise by 2100, which stand at about one and a half feet. However, these estimates are now being questioned, as ice sheets in Greenland and West Antarctica are melting faster than expected. Some extreme estimates are now as high as five and a half feet. With this in mind, the subsidence that geologists found makes less of a difference in extreme cases. Most of the Bay Area is subsiding at less than 2 millimeters per year, but subsidence was found to be as high as 10 millimeters per year in some areas.

“Flooding from sea level rise is clearly an issue in many coastal urban areas,” says Bürgmann. “This kind of analysis is probably going to be relevant around the world, and could be expanded to a much, much larger scale.”

Additionally, flooding is not the only problem that comes with rising seas and sinking land. When previously dry land becomes flooded, it causes saltwater contamination of surface and underground water, which increases coastal erosion and wetland losses. The consequences of these findings have wide-ranging effects.

“Accurately measuring vertical land motion is an essential component for developing robust projections of flooding exposure for coastal communities worldwide,” explains Patrick Barnard, a research geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park. “This work is an important step forward in providing coastal managers with increasingly more detailed information on the impacts of climate change, and therefore directly supports informed decision-making that can mitigate future impacts.”

Sea level rise to cause considerable flooding in the Bay Area

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-dogs-bond/">Pets</a> often become integral parts of our family, especially if they spend the majority of their time within our homes. However, studies have shown that – compared to outdoor pets – pets that primarily stay indoors have higher rates of diseases like diabetes, hypothyroidism, and kidney diseases. One new study published in American Chemical Society journal Environmental Science &amp; Technology proposes that chemical substances in the home may contribute to these diseases.

ACS researchers examined pets’ exposure to parabens – preservative chemicals commonly found in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. These substances are endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), which research has shown to possibly interfere with hormones and cause harmful effects on developmental, reproductive, and neurological systems.

Prior studies have analyzed the presence of other EDCs, like heavy metals and bisphenol A, in pet food. However, little is known about the presence of parabens in these foods. The researchers of this study examined 58 variations of commercially available dog and cat foods, as well as 60 urine samples from individual animals. From their analysis, they found that methyl paraben and the metabolite called 4-hydroxybenzoic acid were the most abundant chemicals detected in both pet food and urine. 

Results also showed that dry food contained higher levels of parabens and their metabolites than wet food. Furthermore, cat food had higher paraben concentrations than dog food. Following their urine analysis, the researchers were able to calculate that dogs are exposed to other sources of parabens, while cats’ exposure comes mainly from their diet. 

While they don’t definitively say that the discovery of these paraben levels are directly linked to certain diseases, the researchers do note that they believe this is the first time the occurrence of these substances has been reported in pet food and urine in the United States.

Agriculture giant <a href="https://monsanto.com/">Monsanto</a> has faced years of controversy and lawsuits because of the corporation's research and development of chemicals, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gmo-crops-real-problem/">genetically modified</a> seeds and crops, and other innovations aimed at farmers around the world. 

Now, Federal Judge Vince Chhabria will be ruling over a case examining the herbicide Roundup, developed by Monsanto containing the chemical glyphosate, which faces claims that it causes non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. 

Glyphosate was developed by Monsanto in the 1970s and Roundup has remained one of the most popular and widely available herbicides in the world. Both farmers and homeowners use Roundup to keep weeds away. Monsanto even sells genetically modified seeds that are glyphosate resistant. 

However, in 2015 the <a href="http://www.iarc.fr/">International Agency for Research on Cancer</a>, which is part of the <a href="http://www.who.int/">World Health Organization</a>, labeled glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen.” 

Lawsuit after lawsuit quickly followed with many claiming that Monsanto willingly deceived consumers. 

Even though the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/">EPA </a>determined that the chemical is safe, a slew of international agencies have reviewed and evaluated the herbicide based on its harmful side-effects. 

Monsanto denies any wrongdoing, stating that hundreds of studies found the chemical safe and that there is no basis to claims that its a carcinogen.

“There are more than 800 published studies — scientific, medical and peer-reviewed — which demonstrate that glyphosate is safe and there is no association whatsoever with any form of cancer,” Scott Partridge, vice president of strategy at Monsanto told the Associated Press. 

Chhabria isn’t determining whether or not glyphosate causes cancer. Instead, the judge is conducting his own review to determine if the studies that have been conducted on the chemical do in fact prove that it's safe to consumers. 

The federal judge has to determine if there is a significant body of evidence to back claims that the chemical causes cancer. 

Part of this decision is dependant on whether or not Chhabria will allow testimony from the doctors and epidemiologists of those accusing Monsanto of hiding evidence that the chemical was a carcinogen. 

Without testimony from personal doctors, it will be difficult to convince a jury.

Chhabria's review is still underway, and the results could mean a huge payout by Monsanto and major steps to properly label glyphosate in herbicides as a known carcinogen, depending on the final ruling.

“Often when we're doing regional studies of ecosystem services, or the ways that nature benefits us, we ignore the cities,” said Ziter. “We treat the city as this kind of gray box; quite literally on maps it's often a gray box. And what we've discovered here is that ... we need to be thinking about the city as part of the landscape.”

Ziter collected soil samples from 100 sites across the city of Madison, Wisconsin, for her investigation. Each sample was then analyzed for three ecosystem services - carbon storage, flood mitigation, and water quality regulation.

The study revealed that urban green spaces play a large role in providing these services, particularly flood control and carbon storage.

Ziter found that more developed areas like private backyards and public parks stored substantially more carbon in their soils than urban forests or grasslands. These urban soils even stored more carbon overall compared to agricultural soils in areas surrounding Madison.

Ziter explained that many assessments of  carbon storage “count urban areas as zero” despite their significant contribution as carbon sinks.

While the extent of ecosystem services varied across the sites, urban grasslands and forests made a big difference in flood mitigation by capturing water that would have otherwise ran out into the streets.

“My front yard and my backyard can be more different in terms of their ecology than two houses across the city from one another,” said Ziter. “And that's really fascinating from a management perspective, because it's these small decisions people are making as individuals that are shaping the ecology of these landscapes.”

The United States Census Bureau reported in 2016 that over 80 percent of Americans live in urban areas. That means that there are a lot of these small decisions being made that can have a huge impact on the ecological makeup of our country.


“If you're out gardening, you're interacting with the natural world. If you're going out for a walk along the lake, you're interacting with the natural world. We often think of nature as being in these big wild spaces, but there are a lot of smaller day-to-day interactions that we don't realize are fostering a connection to our environment,” said Ziter.

She said that these types of interactions can help one's overall quality of life in the city. 

Ziter hopes her study, which is published in the journal <a href="http://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/hub/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)1939-5582/">Ecosystem Applications</a>, encourages ecologists to pay more attention to urban green spaces.

Urban green spaces help store carbon and stop flooding

University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate student Carly Ziter is reporting that...

Researchers at <a href="http://www.concordia.ca/">Concordia University</a> are describing a method that they have developed to substantially reduce the carbon emissions generated by homes and buildings while lowering energy costs.

In Canada, residents of the Far North live at great distances from power grids. Powering these remote communities along with large buildings that share built energy systems can be costly in terms of both money and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oil-companies-climate-change/">climate change</a>.

“It often feels like we have to choose between our financial constraints and using more energy-efficient measures,” said study co-author Mohammad Sameti. “But what our method shows is that we can efficiently integrate a given system to positively affect both.”

Professors in the Department of Building, Civil, and Environmental Engineering teamed up with colleagues to develop a method that could optimize the integration of multiple systems across multiple buildings.

The research team studied a grid that served eight residential buildings with varying power demands and constraints to identify an energy usage pattern that was both efficient and cost -effective. 

They created a virtual model to provide a range of simulations that considered multiple non-renewable and renewable energy sources, including hydroelectric power. The experts also had to consider issues within the grid, such as the age of buildings or how their energy use changes at different times.

“Because of the complexity of the problem and the large number of decision variables involved, we needed to run all possible variables,” explained co-author Fariborz Haghighat.

The study revealed that, when the priority of the simulation was to reduce carbon emissions, these emissions could be reduced by 59 percent while cutting costs by 75 percent. When overall costs were prioritized instead, however, the result was a savings of just 38 percent along with higher carbon emissions. 

“To optimize cost, we had to prioritize systems that burn fossil fuels. These technologies are cheaper to install and operate than the renewable energy models, but offer no reduction in emissions,” said Sameti.

“Renewable energy sources used in the optimal simulation create a net-zero energy usage by the network, removing the need to rely on traditional heating and cooling technologies with higher emissions, and draw less power from the grid.”

This study demonstrates that a significant reduction in carbon emissions is possible without changing all systems in all buildings within a grid. Because of this, the new approach can be applied as changes are made over time. The ultimate goal of the research is the development of a net-zero energy district (nZED).

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.journals.elsevier.com/applied-energy">Applied Energy</a>.

In what scientists are calling an unprecedented amount of habitat recovery, underwater vegetation in the Chesapeake Bay has grown back and revitalized the area.

A new study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, examined how a decrease in phosphorus and nitrogen levels led to the biggest resurgence of underwater grasses ever recorded.

Researchers led by Jonathan Lefcheck from the <a href="https://www.bigelow.org/">Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Science</a> examined the long-term effect that reducing nutrient pollution had on the Chesapeake Bay’s underwater vegetation. 

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/protecting-lake-erie-from-agricultural-runoff/">Nutrients</a> from agricultural and industrial sources that end up in nearby waterways present a major problem across the country.

Nutrient pollution negatively impacts the wildlife and vegetation in surrounding lakes, rivers, ponds, and even oceans, as is evidenced by the New Jersey-sized dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. 

Nutrients from runoff spur algal blooms that can spread too fast and smother other vegetation while decreasing the oxygen levels in the water. 

This study shows the powerful impact that a concerted long-term effort to reduce nutrient runoff can have on important aquatic ecosystems. 

“It's a humbling and unique opportunity,” said Lefcheck, the study’s lead author. “These efforts began before I was even born, but we are at a stage now where all of these different threads can be pulled together to unveil a picture of unprecedented success. This is a message of hope, and I look forward to a future when the Bay is filled with grasses, something I never thought I would see during my lifetime.”

For the study, the researcher used advanced analytics to illustrate conclusively how reducing nitrogen and phosphorus pollution caused habitat recovery in the Chesapeake Bay. 

Data was collected from two sources, one calculated the cascade of nutrients from land to the waterways and the other showed the detrimental impact that nutrient pollution can have on aquatic plants. 

The results showed that a 23 percent decrease in nitrogen levels and eight percent decrease in phosphorus levels correlated with a fourfold increase Submerged Aquatic Vegetations.

The research is exciting because it shows the progress that has been made over time and how effective policies limiting excess pollution can be for crucial waterways.

Researchers are taking a new approach to determine how global temperature rise can be limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the year 2100. 

The new analysis, which is the first to examine how socioeconomic factors may affect the feasibility of achieving climate targets, describes the conditions that are required to achieve these goals.

The study was led by Joeri Rogelj, a researcher for the <a href="http://www.iiasa.ac.at/">International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis</a> (IIASA).

“One of the goals of the Paris Agreement is to limit warming to 1.5°C, but scientific studies mainly looked at the question of limiting warming to 2°C,” said Rogelj. 

“This study now fills this gap and explores how climate change by the end of the 21st century can be brought in line with 1.5°C of warming. Individual studies have looked at this question in the past, but this study is the first to use a broad and diverse set of models.”

A few years ago, IIASA teamed up with other organizations to develop a database containing Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs), which help to facilitate the integrated analysis of future climate conditions. SSPs are projections based on different ways that the world will progress including population growth, energy demand, land use, and economic growth.

The current study was focused on integrated assessment computer models that each produced its own synopsis of how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/king-penguins-global-warming/">global warming</a> could be limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century under five different SSPs.

The computer models could not create a scenario that was able to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius under all five projections. The models that were successful included the following conditions: a rapid shift away from fossil fuel use towards low-carbon energy sources, lowered energy use, and the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

The researchers also found that the biggest barriers to achieving the 1.5-degree Celsius goal were major social and economic inequalities, continued high fossil-fuel use, and poor short-term climate policies.

Keywan Riahi is an IIASA Energy Program Director and one of the co-authors of the research.


“A critical value of the paper is the use of the SSPs, which has helped to systematically explore conditions under which such extreme low targets might become attainable,” said Riahi. 

“Our assessment shows particularly the enormous value of pursuing sustainable development for reaching extreme low climate change targets. On the other hand, fragmentation and pronounced inequalities will likely come hand-in-hand with low levels of innovation and productivity, and thus may push the 1.5°C target out of reach.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/nclimate/">Nature Climate Change</a>.

Until the stormy weather of the past few days, the <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/news/article/How-dry-is-this-winter-Sierra-snowpack-now-on-12563228.php">Sierra Nevada snowpack</a> was on track to record one of its lowest years ever, and it’s not alone. Western snowpacks have declined steadily over the past century, a new analysis of snow records found.

The study, led by Dr. Philip Mote of Oregon State University, found that more than 90 percent of snow monitoring sites across the western U.S. had seen declines in the snowpack since 1915 – and sometimes those declines were significant.

"It is a bigger decline than we had expected," Mote, who directs the university’s Oregon Climate Change Research Institute, said in a press release. "In many lower-elevation sites, what used to fall as snow is now rain. Upper elevations have not been affected nearly as much, but most states don't have that much area at 7,000-plus feet.”

Low snowpacks have caused worry along the Pacific Coast this winter, with Washington reporting <a href="http://www.capitalpress.com/Washington/20180206/warming-causes-worries-for-washington-snowpack">lower than average snow water equivalent</a> at the beginning of February while Oregon <a href="http://www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/2018/02/08/oregon-warm-winter-low-snowpack-make-drought-likely/321237002/">prepared for a possible drought</a>. California’s Northern Sierra snowpack held only a <a href="http://cdec.water.ca.gov/snowapp/sweq.action">quarter of its normal water volume</a> for this time of year on Friday, and sites farther south weren’t much better off.

But the problem stretches back far longer than the past couple of years.

On average, western snowpacks have shrunk by about 15 to 30 percent since 1915, the study found. That translates to a water loss similar in volume to Lake Mead, which affects both the environment and wildlife, and human water use in cities, agriculture and industry, the researchers said.

During California’s recent drought, state water advocates and legislators looked to <a href="http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/opinion/editorials/sd-california-drought-lesson-dams-20170317-story.html">creating more storage for water</a>, but that’s not enough, Mote said.

"The solution isn't in infrastructure. New reservoirs could not be built fast enough to offset the loss of snow storage – and we don't have a lot of capacity left for that kind of storage,” he said. “It comes down to managing what we have in the best possible ways."

To measure the long-term trends in western snowpacks, researchers looked at historical records at 1,766 sites throughout the United States. While they focused primarily on the April 1 data – the usual peak of the snowpack in most western states – they also looked at data collected on the first of each month from January through May. 

Along with crunching the numbers, the researchers used computer modeling to visualize the water cycle and snow activity. 

The shrinking western snowpacks appear to be linked to warmer winters and earlier springs, the researchers found, not a lack of snowfall. Eastern Oregon and northern Nevada saw the most drastic declines, but sites in California, Montana, Washington, Idaho and Arizona also saw 70 percent declines.

"We found declining trends in all months, states and climates, but the impacts are the largest in the spring, in Pacific states, and in locations with mild winter climates," Mote said.

The study has been published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41612-018-0012-1">NPJ Climate and Atmospheric Science</a>. “We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="http://www.ntu.edu.sg/">NTU Singapore</a> reveals that some plants can remove toxic heavy metals from soil.&nbsp;



The researchers analyzed samples of various tropical plant species to test for levels of heavy metals and metalloids. The study showed that there are existing plants with high levels of these contaminants, which means that these species are great candidates for drawing pollutants out of the soil.&nbsp;



Among the plants examined in the study, 12 species had accumulated several types of heavy metals and metalloids. These plants are widely available, including species that are native to Singapore.



“In a small nation like Singapore, land may be repurposed to support new development plans, so it is important that we have a green and sustainable way to remediate land that is contaminated," said Professor Lam Yeng Ming.



"We set out to uncover how to better make use of tropical plants to do phytoremediation and through advanced characterization techniques, we showed how some of these tropical plant species can be an environmentally friendly and literally a 'green' way to remove contaminants in soil."&nbsp;



"Phytoremediation also has benefits of cost effectiveness, simplicity of management, aesthetic advantages, and long-term applicability and sustainability. The strategy prevents erosion and metal leaching by stabilizing or accumulating heavy metals, so that helps reduce the risk of contaminant spread.”

In the 20th century, chemical companies developed thousands of herbicides. The most commonly used herbicide was glyphosate, which was introduced in 1974.



Over the past few decades, dozens of species of weeds have evolved resistance to glyphosate. Depending on the site of action, the part of the plant that an herbicide interacts with, weeds may even be resistant to herbicides that have not been developed yet.&nbsp;



With increasing resistance to glyphosate and other herbicides, weeds are - once again - becoming a major concern for farmers.&nbsp;

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/">NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> (JPL) describes a dust storm on Mars that was nearly twice the size of the United States. As the storm covered the southern hemisphere of the planet, some of NASA’s explorers had to delay their normal activities.



NASA’s Insight lander put itself in a "safe mode" for 11 days to conserve battery power because solar power was disrupted by the dust. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter postponed flights until conditions improved.



"A fleet of NASA orbiters monitor Martian dust storms like this one and serve as lifelines to Earth by relaying data from the rovers and lander on the ground back to the team. This includes the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, MAVEN, and Odyssey," reports JPL.



"Dust storms like this recent one start close to the ground and are spread by wind as they rise – warming the cold Martian atmosphere."



The images in the video were captured by NASA’s Curiosity as the dust rolled in. A fleet of orbiters monitored the dust storm from above, relaying data from Mars’ explorers back to scientists on Earth.

NASA monitors giant dust storms on Mars

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="http://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. This strait provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean.



Qeshm is separated from the Iranian coast by the Clarence Strait, also known as Khuran.&nbsp;The Hara Forest Protected Area is a network of shallow waterways and forest located between the island and the mainland. This protected region is home to sea turtles, snakes, and more than 150 species of migrating birds.



Qeshm is famous for its wide range of&nbsp;ecotourist&nbsp;attractions, such as the&nbsp;Hara marine forests. According to environmentalists, about 1.5 percent of the world birds and 25 percent of Iran's native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/female-hummingbirds-avoid-sexual-harassment-by-looking-like-males/">birds</a> annually migrate to the forests, which are the first national geo park in Iran.



Tourists are also drawn to the island to see an age-old Portuguese&nbsp;fort, historic mosques, the&nbsp;Seyyed Mozaffar&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bibi Maryam&nbsp;shrines, and the "Valley of Stars."



The average temperature on the island is 81 degress and the region is often hot and humid. From June to August, the island is described as being oppressively hot. The ideal time to visit is during the winter season.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Inhambane Bay in southeast Mozambique.&nbsp;



"Inhambane Bay is a deep inlet into which the small Mutamba River flows," says ESA. "On one side of the bay lies the historical city of Inhambane, capital of the Inhambane Province, while the sister city of Maxixe, the economic capital of Inhambane, sits across from it. The province is the second largest grower of cashews, after Nampula, and it also produces coconut and citrus fruits."



The beaches of Barra and Tofo are popular with tourists. There are also coral reefs along the long coastline of Inhambane, making it an ideal destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.



"Mozambique’s extensive coastline heightens the country’s vulnerability to tropical cyclones that develop in the Indian Ocean as well as storm surge flooding," says ESA.



"More than half of the population lives in low lying coastal areas, putting communities at risk. Inhambane Bay was dangerously close to where Cyclone Idai made landfall in 2019 causing widespread destruction to the country."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency </a>&nbsp;features the Kangerlussuaq Glacier, one of the largest tidewater outlet glaciers in Greenland. The glacier is located on the east coast of the Greenland ice sheet.



As human-induced climate change continues to drive up temperatures, global ice loss is accelerating at an alarming rate. ESA reports that, over the past decade alone, 3.5 trillion tons of ice have melted from the Greenland ice sheet. This is enough to cover the UK with meltwater 15 meters deep.



Based on satellite imagery, researchers determined that Kangerlussuaq entered a new phase of rapid retreat and acceleration in 2017. In their study, published in <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feart.2019.00123/full">Frontiers in Earth Science</a>,&nbsp; the experts report that the glacier's ice front is now at its most retreated position since the early 20th century.



"Given Kangerlussuaq’s previous impacts on both the magnitude and pattern of ice sheet wide mass loss, we predict that its new phase of retreat, acceleration and thinning will markedly enhance the south-east region’s contribution to increasing discharge from the ice sheet," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;&nbsp;



"More broadly, accurate forecasting of the ice sheet’s contribution to sea level rise will require a deeper understanding of, and responses to, these non-linear ice dynamic processes."

"Earth’s oceans are huge heat stores, soaking up 93% of the excess heat from human activity over the past 70 years. Ocean currents redistribute heat around the planet, from the Equator to the poles. Where this ocean heat goes influences weather patterns and regional climate," explains ESA.



"As well as absorbing heat, oceans are a natural carbon sink, absorbing a quarter of carbon dioxide emissions from human activity. This has led to the acidification of ocean water, threating marine life."



The amount of heat and carbon dioxide soaked up by the ocean depends on specific variables, including phytoplankton, temperatures, waves, salinity, and ice cover. Satellites can be used to measure these variables from space.



"From their unique vantage point, satellites provide key information for understanding the complexities of our planet and monitoring environmental issues," says ESA.

These observations have many applications, such as ship routing, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-modem-ocean-is-a-tough-place-for-whales-to-survive/">ocean</a> current forecasting, and debris tracking.



"A project supported by the Discovery element of ESA’s Basic Activities recently investigated a new technique to measure sea surface topography very precisely," reports ESA.



"The technique involves looking at satellite navigation (GNSS) signals that have been reflected off of the sea surface at very low angles. At these so-called grazing angles, waves and surface roughness have very little impact on the reflection process; the sea surface acts as a very smooth mirror."



Estel Cardellach is the principal investigator at the Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia, who first submitted the idea for the project.



“In a mirror-like reflection the phase of the signal can be tracked – it is continuous," said Cardellach. "Different surface heights result in different phase measurements. It gives a very precise measurement of the surface altitude at a few centimetres’ precision.”



The researchers developed a GNSS receiver and set up an experiment in the Balaeric Islands to collect signals from the receiver that were reflected off the sea surface. Ultimately, these signals will provide improved measurements of the shape of the sea surface.

By recording soundscapes, the experts can determine which animals are present through their distinct sounds.&nbsp;



Using this method, sounds can be used as scientific measurements to analyze the effects of deforestation. The researchers will gain a better understanding of how the acoustics of a forest can be used to measure its health.&nbsp;



"From space, parts of the Amazon rainforest that have previously been logged or burned may look lush and green, like a place buzzing with activity and full of sounds. But inside the rainforest, the animal life may tell a different story, of a harsh environment and a quieter soundscape," says NASA.
