Invasive species pose a significant challenge to ecosystems and agriculture, often spreading unnoticed until they have caused considerable damage. Conservationists and growers now have an unusual new ally in the fight against the invasive spotted lanternfly - trained dogs.



A recent study published in the journal Ecosphere highlights how these detection dogs outperform humans in identifying lanternfly egg masses in challenging environments, offering a novel strategy to curb the pest’s spread.



"Preventing the introduction of invasive species is championed as the most cost-effective and efficient strategy for avoiding negative impacts on systems," noted the researchers.



"However, once a species has been introduced, the next best option is to detect the population and eliminate it before it becomes established and spreads more widely across the landscape."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spotted-lanternfly-infestations">Spotted lanternfly infestations </h2>



First detected in Pennsylvania in 2014, the spotted lanternfly has now infested 19 states, including New York. This invasive insect feeds on woody plants like grapes, apples, hops, and various trees, causing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/growing-threat-of-invasive-species-requires-immediate-action/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">widespread destruction</a>.



“A spotted lanternfly infestation in a vineyard can cause 80% to 100% mortality of the vines in one growing season,” said study co-author Angela Fuller, a professor in Cornell’s Department of <a href="https://cals.cornell.edu/natural-resources-environment" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Natural Resources and the Environment</a>.



Fuller also noted the financial burden of infestations. “Infestations also increase the amount of insecticide that growers need to use, which can increase costs by up to 170% in a growing season.” 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-training-dogs-for-invasive-species-detection">Training dogs for invasive species detection</h2>



In collaboration with the <a href="https://www.nynjtc.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York-New Jersey Trail Conference</a> and <a href="https://wd4c.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Working Dogs for Conservation</a>, researchers trained a Labrador retriever and a Belgian malinois to sniff out the lanternfly’s egg masses.



These organizations have previously trained dogs to detect invasive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cats-have-become-one-of-the-worlds-most-invasive-predators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> and pathogens, making them well-equipped for this task.



The study compared the efficiency of human and canine detection in 20 vineyards across Pennsylvania and New Jersey. 



The researchers mapped transects in vineyard rows and adjacent forests, where egg masses are likely to overwinter. Humans and dogs surveyed the areas on separate days to prevent cross-contamination of scents.

While humans excelled in detecting invasive egg masses in vineyards, dogs proved superior in forested areas. In vineyards, humans detected 1.8 times more egg masses than dogs, finding 31 egg masses per hour compared to the dogs’ 24. 



Fuller attributed this to humans’ ability to systematically search vines and poles, whereas dogs relied on scent and conducted more random searches. In forests, however, dogs excelled, finding 3.4 times more egg masses than humans. 



“The dogs find egg masses by smell,” Fuller explained. “In a very <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unseen-crisis-37000-alien-species-have-been-introduced-by-human-activities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">complex environment</a>, it’s easier for a dog to smell something than it is for a human to see something that is small and cryptic.” 



Dogs located 7.6 egg masses per hour in forests compared to humans’ 6.7 per hour.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-invasive-species-detection">Importance of invasive species detection</h2>



The study emphasizes the importance of early detection in managing the lanternfly’s spread. Dogs performed exceptionally well in areas with low egg mass densities, making them invaluable for rapid response efforts. 



Fuller noted that while dogs take more time to search than humans, the added time is worth it. 



“The extra time that dogs take to find them is not as important as it is to find them in the first place, because you need to detect the egg masses in order to eradicate them,” she said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-into-lanternfly-behavior">Insights into lanternfly behavior</h2>



Using computer modeling, the researchers identified patterns in lanternfly egg mass distribution. They found higher occupancy rates in vineyards than forests, particularly on metal poles. 



Vineyards near forests had higher lanternfly populations, likely because the insects don’t disperse far and often migrate from nearby trees.



“If you’re searching in a vineyard close to the forest, that’s more likely where they’re going to be,” Fuller said.

Younger adults, specifically those 35 to 45 years old, might face a heightened risk of suffering a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-linked-to-a-higher-risk-of-stroke/">stroke</a> - not from the widely recognized traditional risk factors such as hypertension - but rather from nontraditional risk factors, including migraines. This is the conclusion of a new study published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1161/CIRCOUTCOMES.123.010307" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes</a>.



The research shifts the narrative towards the substantial role that these less conventional factors play in stroke risk among younger adults, challenging the established understanding of stroke etiology.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-traditional-stroke-risk-factors">Traditional stroke risk factors</h2>



Historically, the medical community has pinpointed a series of traditional risk factors responsible for the majority of stroke cases. These include, but are not limited to, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, Type 2 diabetes, smoking habits, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, excessive alcohol consumption, and coronary heart disease.&nbsp;



However, a disturbing trend has been observed with a rising number of stroke incidents reported among <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cigarette-smoking-stroke-risk/">young adults</a> who do not exhibit these conventional risk factors, pointing towards the significant influence of environmental and lifestyle factors in stroke occurrence.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-contributors-to-stroke-among-young-adults">Contributors to stroke among young adults</h2>



“We wanted to understand which risk factors were the top contributors to stroke risk among young adults,” said lead author Michelle Leppert, an assistant professor of neurology at the <a href="https://medschool.cuanschutz.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Colorado School of Medicine</a> in Aurora, Colorado. To achieve this, the researchers utilized a robust administrative database encompassing health insurance claims within Colorado. 



The team meticulously compared the data of over 2,600 individuals who had experienced strokes against a control group of more than 7,800 individuals without stroke history to pinpoint the predominant risk factors leading to strokes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nontraditional-stroke-risk-factors">Nontraditional stroke risk factors</h2>



The investigation revealed a significant association between nontraditional stroke risk factors - including migraines, blood clotting disorders, kidney failure, autoimmune diseases, and malignancy - and the development of strokes in individuals aged 18 to 44 years.&nbsp;



Notably, this association was even stronger among adults younger than 35 years, highlighting the disproportionate impact of these nontraditional risk factors on the younger population.



Specifically, the analysis indicated that within the 18 to 34-year-old demographic, strokes linked to nontraditional risk factors constituted 31% in men and approximately 43% in women, surpassing those attributed to traditional risk factors.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-migraines-emerged-as-a-critical-nontraditional-risk-factor">Migraines emerged as a critical nontraditional risk factor</h2>



Remarkably, migraines emerged as a critical nontraditional risk factor, responsible for 20% of strokes in men and nearly 35% in women within this age group. While the relevance of traditional stroke risk factors seemed to peak among adults aged 35 to 44, the influence of nontraditional risk factors remained substantial across different age groups.



“These findings are significant because most of our attention has been focused on traditional risk factors. We should not ignore nontraditional stroke risk factors and only focus on traditional risk factors; both are important to the development of strokes among young people,” Leppert said.&nbsp;



“In fact, the younger they are at the time of stroke, the more likely their stroke is due to a nontraditional risk factor. We need to better understand the underlying mechanisms of these nontraditional risk factors to develop targeted interventions.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-association-between-migraines-and-stroke-risk">Association between migraines and stroke risk</h2>



Furthermore, the study brought to light the unexpected prominence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/women-migraines/">migraines</a> in the etiology of strokes among young adults - a connection previously noted in the medical literature but not quantified to this extent.&nbsp;



“There have been many studies demonstrating the association between migraines and strokes, but to our knowledge, this study may be the first to demonstrate just how much stroke risk may be attributable to migraines,” Leppert explained.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-possible-study-limitations-nbsp">Possible study limitations&nbsp;</h2>



Derived from data spanning 2012 to 2019 from the Colorado All Payer Claims Database, the study's robust dataset allowed for an in-depth analysis, although it acknowledged certain limitations such as the reliance on administrative databases which might influence the accuracy in risk factor identification, and a lack of comprehensive data on race and ethnicity for a sizable portion of participants.&nbsp;



In addition, the research was focused on metropolitan areas one mile or more above sea level, so altitude may create unique conditions which are not applicable to individuals living at other altitudes.

These future endeavors should aim to clarify the full spectrum of influences contributing to stroke risk, ultimately paving the way for more effective prevention strategies tailored to the needs of younger adults.

Pandemics often originate from close encounters between humans and disease-carrying animals like bats, which can transmit new pathogens directly or indirectly to people.&nbsp;



The viruses responsible for outbreaks such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/two-way-transmission-of-coronavirus-confirmed-between-humans-and-minks/">SARS-CoV-2</a>, SARS-CoV-1, Nipah, Hendra, and possibly Ebola, have all been traced back to bats, highlighting the danger of spillover events.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shifting-the-focus-to-preventing-future-pandemics">Shifting the focus to preventing future pandemics </h2>



“The world is focused on how can we detect and then contain a novel pathogen once it is circulating in humans, rather than how can we prevent that pathogen from entering the human population in the first place,” said lead author Raina Plowright, a professor of public and ecosystem health at <a href="https://www.cornell.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cornell University</a>.



Drawing on findings from two studies conducted in 2022, which investigated the transmission of the Hendra virus from bats to horses and humans, the team's prevention strategy emphasizes the importance of maintaining natural habitats for wildlife.&nbsp;

Key measures include ensuring consistent food availability for wildlife throughout the year, especially during critical periods such as reproduction and migration; protecting natural habitats where animals roost or gather in large numbers; and establishing buffer zones between human populations and wildlife to minimize contact.

The experts emphasize the rarity of disease transmission under natural conditions, discussing the multitude of barriers that typically prevent pathogens from reaching humans. However, they stress the importance of protective measures for communities that interact closely with wildlife, to minimize the risk of pathogen exposure.



Highlighting the need for a dedicated international body to oversee pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response, the scientists advocate for the creation of an agency or panel capable of evaluating data on ecological integrity, landscape intactness, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-climate-change-and-biodiversity-loss-are-one-indivisible-global-health-crisis/">biodiversity</a> as key factors in preventing future pandemics.&nbsp;



This approach marks a significant shift towards proactive measures designed to safeguard public health by preserving the natural environment.

Did you know your brain is likely larger than your grandparents'? A fascinating new study from <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/welcome/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Davis Health</a> shows that human brain sizes have been steadily growing over generations. 



If you were born after the 1930s, your brain is significantly bigger than that of someone born earlier in the 20th century. But before you start bragging about your superior intellect, let's explore why this size difference matters.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-the-brain-size">Decoding the brain size</h2>



The researchers delved into brain scans from thousands of participants in the Framingham Heart Study. This is a long-term project that has tracked health across multiple generations. This incredible study began in 1948. 



The team discovered that people born in the 1970s had an average brain volume 6.6% larger and 15% more brain surface area than folks born in the 1930s.



"The decade someone is born appears to impact brain size and potentially long-term brain health," explained Dr. Charles DeCarli, lead author of the study and a distinguished professor of neurology at UC Davis. 



"Genetics plays a major role in determining brain size, but our findings indicate external influences — such as health, social, cultural and educational factors — may also play a role.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-do-scientists-measure-brain-size">How do scientists measure brain size?</h2>



Let's talk about two important ways scientists measure the brain's building blocks:



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intracranial-volume-icv">Intracranial volume (ICV)</h3>



Think of ICV as the total amount of space inside your skull – your brain's house. It also includes the fluid, blood vessels, and other tissues that keep your brain healthy. ICV can give clues about overall brain health. In some cases, a larger ICV might mean a larger brain, suggesting more brainpower. 



However, brain size isn't the whole story - how efficiently your brain works matters too. Doctors and researchers use ICV measurements to track changes in the brain. This can help diagnose conditions like Alzheimer's disease, where brain tissue may shrink over time.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surface-area">Surface area</h3>



Your brain's surface area is all about the outer layer, called the cerebral cortex. This part is incredibly wrinkly, with folds and grooves - imagine crumpling a piece of paper to fit more surface area into a small space. Those folds are packed with brain cells (neurons). 



More folds mean more brain cells, boosting your thinking power. Different parts of the cortex do different jobs. Some handle your senses, others control how you move, and others tackle complex things like problem-solving and emotions.



Overall, ICV gives a sense of your brain's overall size and surface area focuses on how complex your brain's 'wiring' can be, like how many rooms are in that house and how they're connected. 



Together, these measurements help us understand individual brain power, explaining why some people's brains might be better at certain tasks, and also track brain health as we age or if diseases affect the brain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-size-and-dementia-connection">Brain size and dementia connection</h2>



So, why should we care about having a slightly larger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-learning-how-the-brain-stores-new-information/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain</a>? Scientists believe it has to do with a concept called "brain reserve." Imagine your brain as a fortress protecting your mental well-being. 



The bigger and stronger the fortress, the more resources (like healthy brain cells) you have to combat the assaults of age-related diseases like Alzheimer's dementia.



While the total number of people with dementia is growing because we're living longer, the percentage of the population affected by these diseases is actually decreasing. 



"Larger brain structures like those observed in our study may reflect improved brain development and improved brain health," said Dr. DeCarli. "A larger brain structure represents a larger brain reserve and may buffer the late-life effects of age-related brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and related dementias.”

A recent study found something quite remarkable – it might only take three fish to shift from individual movement to a full-fledged school.

Schooling is a fascinating and complex behavior observed in various species of fish, where individuals move together in a coordinated manner, forming what is commonly referred to as a "school." 



This collective behavior is not merely a random aggregation of fish but a highly organized and dynamic formation that provides numerous benefits to the individuals within the school. Some of schooling characteristics include:

Fish in a school exhibit a tendency to orient their bodies in the same direction. This polarization is crucial for maintaining group cohesion and facilitating efficient collective movement, particularly when the group needs to make rapid turns or adjustments.

Schools of fish are characterized by relatively high density, with individuals maintaining a specific distance from each other. 



While not packed to the point of immobility, this closeness is a crucial factor in optimizing the school's ability to confuse predators and potentially improve foraging success.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-magic-number-three">The magic number: Three</h2>



A team of scientists from Germany and the UK decided to investigate the minimum "cast of characters" required for schooling behavior. They focused on zebrafish, a popular species both in research labs and home aquariums. 



Using specialized 3D cameras, the researchers tracked and analyzed the movements of different-sized fish groups. Some of the interesting findings of the study include:

While this dynamic serves practical purposes like basic social interaction and potentially keeping an extra eye out for danger, it lacks the intricate coordination and collective behavior that defines a true school.

Adding a third <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-evolution-takes-place-in-decades-not-millions-of-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> to the mix creates a dramatic change, marking the beginning of true schooling behavior. This trio displays a strong preference for swimming side-by-side, a pattern also seen in much larger schools. This shift away from the leader-follower model is significant. 



It suggests a collective decision-making process and a level of coordination that simply doesn't exist with just a pair of fish. The presence of a third individual seems to unlock a more complex set of social interactions, laying the foundation for the impressive synchronized movements we associate with schooling.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-bigger-picture-nbsp">The bigger picture&nbsp;</h3>



What's particularly fascinating is how this behavior scales up. Even within a large group of 50 fish, the researchers observed a consistent pattern: subgroups of three maintaining their side-by-side swimming preference. 



This suggests that the fundamental principles of schooling - formation, coordination, and cohesion - are established at the most basic level, within those small groups of three. These simple rules then scale up remarkably, allowing for the mesmerizing displays of coordinated movement we see in massive schools of fish.



"Practically, three fish form a school, but two are not enough," said Dr. Alexandra Zampetaki from the <a href="https://www.tuwien.at/en/phy/iap" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute for Applied Physics</a>.

Additionally, whale movement and nutrient-rich waste promote phytoplankton growth, which is key to supporting marine food webs and absorbing massive amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide. 



Humpback whales also showcase intelligence and influence fish behavior with their cooperative "bubble net feeding" techniques. Beyond their ecological roles, humpback whales support complex marine ecosystems, and the study of these whales expands our knowledge of the oceans. Furthermore, whale watching provides sustainable, non-lethal economic benefits to coastal communities. 



However, humpback whales are vulnerable to entanglement in fishing gear, ship strikes, noise pollution, and the long-term effects of climate change. Proactive solutions include regulations to reduce human impacts, the creation of protected areas to safeguard critical habitats, and continued research, such as acoustic tagging, to inform the most effective conservation strategies.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-suction-cup-tags">Suction cup tags</h2>



For years, whale researchers relied on techniques like dropping giant microphones into the ocean. It revealed a vast soundscape, but left an important question unanswered: Which whale is singing which part of this underwater opera?



Then, about twenty years ago, biologists invented suction cup tags. These gadgets stick right onto a whale, recording its movements and any sounds it makes. 



Recently, a team of biologists at <a href="https://www.syracuse.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Syracuse University</a>, led by Professor Susan Parks, has taken this technology to the next level. The goal was to understand not just what whales say, but how their communication networks function. This new knowledge could be key to protecting these awe-inspiring giants. 



Their secret weapon? Tagging lots of whales in the same pod at the same time. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-acoustic-tagging-and-whale-communication">Acoustic tagging and whale communication</h2>



"By simultaneously tagging all whales in a group, we were able to compare how loudly calls were recorded across tags to infer who was calling," explained study co-author Julia Zeh. "This, in turn, lets us look at individual and group-level communication in ways that we couldn't before."



The trick lies in the volume. Imagine each whale's tag is like its own personal megaphone. If Whale A hollers, its own megaphone picks up the loudest blast, while the sounds fade a little bit on Whale B and Whale C's megaphones. 



Now, even though we're still hearing a chorus of whale songs, we can start to understand which whale is taking a solo, and who's harmonizing in the background.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-whale-communication">Decoding whale communication</h2>



The Syracuse team analyzed nearly 50 hours of recordings - a massive task of figuring out which whale said what. While we still don't have a whale-to-English dictionary, scientists believe these calls might be about coordinating feeding, keeping the group together, or even just casual whale gossip.



"This information can give us insight into how whales coordinate behaviors, how their calls relate to what they're doing, what types of calls they use, and what information they might exchange in group communication," said Zeh.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-whale-communication-for-conservation">Understanding whale communication for conservation</h2>



Of course, it's not just about satisfying our curiosity. Once we can pinpoint which whale is vocalizing, scientists can start analyzing differences between individuals. Do youngsters have a special "baby talk"? Do females and males have distinct calls?



This knowledge has massive implications for whale <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-whale-shark-day-protecting-the-gentle-giants-of-the-sea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation</a>. It helps get more accurate population counts and track the health of individual whales.



"Having information from tag data about call rates and timing can improve count estimates," said Zeh. "For example, having 10 calls doesn't necessarily mean there are 10 whales, but potentially two whales calling back and forth, or one whale producing sequential calls."

The 79° N Glacier in northeast <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evidence-of-a-greener-greenland-reveals-shocking-reality-of-sea-level-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland</a>, is showcasing alarming signs of climate change with dramatic ice loss. Researchers at the <a href="https://www.awi.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alfred Wegener Institute</a> have observed dramatic glacier thinning, with a loss of over 160 meters (525 feet) since 1998.



This rapid decline is attributed to warm ocean currents eroding the glacier from beneath and elevated air temperatures forming surface lakes. These lakes intensify the melt as their waters drain through vast channels in the ice into the ocean. 



Remarkably, one such channel found was 500 meters (1,640 feet) tall, standing under ice that was just 190 meters (624 feet) thick, starkly highlighting climate change's impact on this crucial glacier.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-the-79-n-glacier-in-greenland">Studying the 79° N Glacier in Greenland</h2>



AWI scientists have conducted extensive research in this remote area of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-transformation-ice-melt-plant-growth-vegetation-cascading-effects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland</a>, establishing a base camp for operations. They used helicopters to deploy autonomous measuring devices to the glacier's most inaccessible parts.



Subsequently, ground, aircraft radar, and satellite data have informed a study in The Cryosphere journal, exploring the glacier's condition and how global warming impacts ice tongue stability. These findings are crucial for predicting the future of ice shelves in both <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-absorbs-more-methane-than-it-emits-surprising-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland</a> and Antarctica.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-glacial-melt-dynamics">Understanding glacial melt dynamics</h2>



Dr. Ole Zeising, an AWI glaciologist and study's lead author, described their approach.



“Since 2016, we have been using autonomous instruments to carry out radar measurements on the 79° N-Glacier, from which we can determine melt and thinning rates," Zeising explained. 



“In addition, we used aircraft radar data from 1998, 2018 and 2021 showing changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-ice-shelves-have-lost-over-35-percent-of-their-volume/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice thickness</a>. We were able to measure that the 79° N-Glacier has changed significantly in recent decades under the influence of global warming," he concluded.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warm-ocean-currents-and-atmospheric-conditions">Warm ocean currents and atmospheric conditions</h2>



The study highlights the drastic effects of warm <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atlantic-ocean-currents-slowing-as-water-temperature-rises/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean currents</a> and atmospheric warming on the glacier's ice tongue. 



It reveals high melt rates and the emergence of large channels beneath the ice, likely resulting from lake water draining through the glacier. Consequently, the glacier has significantly thinned over recent decades.



Interestingly, melt rates have declined since 2018, possibly from cooler ocean currents, highlighting glacier sensitivity to environmental shifts. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-the-collapse">Preparing for the collapse</h2>



Prof. Dr. Angelika Humbert noted the glacier's unusually quick adaptation to these changes. Consequently, she emphasized the complexity of glacier dynamics.



“We expect that this floating glacier tongue will break apart over the next few years to decades. We have begun to study this process in detail to gain maximum insight into the course of the process," explained Humbert. 



"Although there have been several such disintegrations of ice shelves, we have only been able to collect data subsequently. As a scientific community, we are now in a better position by having built up a really good database before the collapse," she concluded.

Creating a comprehensive database beforehand will better prepare scientists to grasp and potentially mitigate the consequences of these environmental shifts.



The situation of the 79° N Glacier serves as a critical wake-up call regarding the urgent need to address climate change. It highlights the interconnectedness of our planet's systems.

Another massive Greenland glacier is rapidly melting

A team of scientists led by <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a> has traced the origins of the Bengal cat's eye-catching coat to domestic cat genes selectively bred for their exotic appearance. It was previously assumed that the markings of the Bengal cat were linked to the wild genes of the Asian leopard cat.



The research suggests that the marbled and spotted patterns, as well as the iridescent sheen of Bengal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exotic-cats-have-surprising-voice-recognition-ability/">cats</a>, which make them resemble small jungle cats, are in fact the result of aggressive selection for certain domestic cat genes after initial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/european-wildcats-avoided-breeding-with-domestic-cats-for-2000-years/">breeding</a> with wild cats.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distinctive-appearance-of-the-bengal-cat-nbsp">Distinctive appearance of the Bengal cat&nbsp;</h2>



“Most of the DNA changes that underlie the unique appearance of the Bengal cat breed have always been present in domestic cats,” said study senior author Gregory Barsh, an emeritus professor of genetics, shedding light on the true genetic source of the Bengal cat's distinctive look. “It was really the power of breeding that brought them out.”



With contributions from Bengal cat breeders, the study involved a detailed genetic analysis of nearly 1,000 Bengal cats over a period of 15 years. The findings not only illuminate the specific origins of the Bengal cat’s coat but also contribute to a broader understanding of how genetics encode appearance and how various genes interact to produce an array of colors, patterns, and physical traits.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-visually-striking-breed-of-cats">A visually striking breed of cats</h2>



The initial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/german-shepherd-health-breeding/">breeding</a> of wild Asian leopard cats with domestic cats, conducted by biologist Jean Mills from the 1960s through the 1980s, aimed to create a visually striking new breed.&nbsp;



Through successive generations, breeders selectively enhanced cats with desired physical attributes and temperaments, leading to the official recognition of the Bengal cat as a distinct breed by the <a href="https://www.tica.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Cat Association</a> in 1986.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-opportunity-to-explore-genetic-variation">Unique opportunity to explore genetic variation</h2>



While the experts’ previously identified genes responsible for coat color variations in tabby cats and unique markings in Abyssinian cats, research on Bengal cats represents a unique opportunity to explore genetic variation and its influence on form, color, and pattern.&nbsp;



“The big-picture question is how genetic variation leads to variation in appearance,” Barsh said.



“This is a question that has all kinds of implications for different species, but we think that cats offer an especially tractable way to study it.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenging-widespread-assumptions">Challenging widespread assumptions</h2>



Surprisingly, the team's genetic analysis of 947 Bengal cat <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/genome-mapping-completed-for-dozens-of-common-animals/">genomes</a> revealed that the breed's exotic appearance did not directly inherit any specific parts of the Asian leopard cat genomes.&nbsp;



This finding challenged the widespread assumption among breeders and owners that the Bengal cat's distinctive looks were derived from leopard cats. Instead, the study demonstrated that these aesthetic traits resulted from variations in genes already present in domestic cats.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-glitter-effect-in-some-bengal-cats">The glitter effect in some Bengal cats </h2>



Furthermore, the scientists delved into the genetic basis of the "glitter" effect seen in about 60% of all Bengal cats, characterized by their exceptionally soft, gold-iridescent fur. This trait was linked to a mutation in the Fgfr2 gene, originating not from leopard cats but from domestic ones, and is nearly specific to Bengal cats.&nbsp;



This particular mutation uniquely reduces, rather than eliminates, the activity of the protein encoded by Fgfr2, offering insights into how gene variations can subtly influence appearance.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-charcoal-bengal-cats-nbsp">Charcoal Bengal cats&nbsp;</h2>



Additionally, the team investigated the genetics behind "charcoal" Bengals, a subset with darker coloring, uncovering a leopard cat gene related to the charcoal color. However, this gene only led to the charcoal appearance when combined with domestic cat genomes, an instance of genomic incompatibility illustrating the complex interplay between genes of distantly related species within hybrid animals.



“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hybridization-reduces-vulnerability-to-climate-change/">Hybridization</a> between different species can happen naturally and is responsible for the small amount of Neanderthal DNA found in many human genomes. But the wild leopard cat and the domestic cat are more different from each other than humans are from chimpanzees, and it’s remarkable to see how DNA from these distantly related species can exist and work together in a popular companion animal,” Barsh explained.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-refined-breeding-strategies-nbsp">More refined breeding strategies&nbsp;</h2>



These findings enrich breeders' understanding, enabling more refined breeding strategies for new colors and patterns, while highlighting the potency of artificial selection.&nbsp;



“Breeders are extremely interested in our data,” said lead author Christopher Kaelin, a professor of genetics at Stanford. “They not only want to contribute their cats’ DNA but they also want to be involved and help analyze data and hear about our results. It’s been a great collaboration and a true example of citizen science.”



This study, published in the journal <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2024.02.075">Current Biology</a>, offers both valuable information for cat lovers and for scientists interested in processes such as hybridization and selection.&nbsp;



“Human DNA of European or Asian ancestry contains a small fraction of Neanderthal DNA that was caused by hybridization between the two species after humans migrated out of Africa. In some ways, Bengal cats are similar, except the distance between the two hybridizing species is much greater and the time since hybridization is much less,” Barsh concluded.

Originating from the coasts of northwestern Europe and the temperate regions of central Asia, sea buckthorn is a thorny, deciduous plant renowned for the nutritional and medicinal properties of its berries and leaves. 



The plants contain high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are crucial for heart health and cognitive function. Additionally, these parts of the plant are rich in vitamins E, B, and A - essential nutrients that support skin health, energy levels, and vision. 



The berries and leaves are also packed with polyphenols, antioxidants that protect against cellular damage and offer various health benefits. Despite its popularity in Asia and northwestern Europe, North America has yet to fully embrace this superfood.



Recent research led by Professor Fereidoon Shahidi at <a href="https://www.mun.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Memorial University of Newfoundland </a>advances the understanding and promotion of sea buckthorn in North America. PhD student Renan Danielski emphasized the crop’s distinctive qualities and its potential for success in North America.

The experts meticulously analyzed the composition of sea buckthorn, with a particular focus on polyphenols. Consequently, the team's analysis of Canadian sea buckthorn compounds underscores their commitment to global comparison and market establishment in North America.



Professor Shahidi emphasized the importance of educating consumers about the cultivar's benefits, which could significantly enhance its market presence.



The research revealed that the pomace and seeds of sea buckthorn are rich in beneficial polyphenols, providing cardiovascular and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coffee-with-milk-has-powerful-anti-inflammatory-properties/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anti-inflammatory</a> benefits. 



Additionally, the team discovered that the berry's polyphenolic content varies by geography, with uniquely potent compounds in Newfoundland. This finding points to an exciting avenue for future research.

The antidiabetic and anti-obesity potential of sea buckthorn extracts is particularly promising. Consequently, this opens up opportunities for more detailed investigations into how they work and their possible uses in therapy.



Furthermore, Danielski highlighted the need for more research on the positive effects of sea buckthorn <a href="https://www.earth.com/search-results/?search=polyphenols&amp;start=0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">polyphenols</a> on human health. Should future animal and human studies validate these benefits, sea buckthorn may become key in combating conditions like diabetes and obesity.

A team of scientists led by the <a href="https://case.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Case Western Reserve University</a> has found that certain household chemicals, commonly found in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-household-cleaning-products-release-hundreds-of-toxic-chemicals/">products</a> ranging from furniture to personal care items, could pose significant risks to brain health. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environmental-factors-and-neurological-disorders-nbsp">Environmental factors and neurological disorders&nbsp;</h2>



The study underscores the potential link between household chemicals and the development of neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and autism spectrum disorders.



Despite the prevalence of neurological conditions affecting millions worldwide, genetics alone cannot account for the majority of cases. This gap highlights the pressing need to explore environmental factors such as household chemicals as key contributors to neurological disorders.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-household-chemicals-directly-harm-brain-cells">Household chemicals directly harm brain cells</h2>



The focus of the study was on the brain's oligodendrocytes, cells responsible for creating a protective sheath around nerve cells.&nbsp;



“Loss of oligodendrocytes underlies multiple sclerosis and other neurological diseases,” said principal investigator Paul Tesar, a professor of innovative therapeutics and director of the Institute for Glial Sciences at Case Western. “We now show that specific chemicals in consumer products can directly harm oligodendrocytes, representing a previously unrecognized risk factor for neurological disease.”&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-two-specific-classes-of-household-chemicals-nbsp">Two specific classes of household chemicals&nbsp;</h2>



In their quest to understand the impact of environmental chemicals on the brain, the researchers scrutinized over 1,800 chemicals humans might encounter. This examination led to the identification of two specific classes of chemicals - organophosphate flame retardants and quaternary ammonium compounds - as particularly detrimental to oligodendrocytes.&nbsp;



The latter, found in numerous disinfectants and personal care products, have seen increased use since the onset of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-impacts-the-brain-through-inflammation-not-infection/">COVID-19</a> pandemic, raising concerns about widespread exposure. Similarly, organophosphate flame retardants are commonly incorporated into electronics and furniture.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-missing-link-in-the-development-of-neurological-diseases-nbsp">Missing link in the development of neurological diseases&nbsp;</h2>



Through cellular and organoid models, as well as studies in developing mouse brains, the researchers demonstrated how quaternary ammonium compounds lead to the death of oligodendrocytes, while organophosphate flame retardants inhibit their maturation.



“We found that oligodendrocytes - but not other brain cells - are surprisingly vulnerable to quaternary ammonium compounds and organophosphate flame retardants,” said lead author Erin Cohn, a graduate student in medicine at Case Western. “Understanding human exposure to these chemicals may help explain a missing link in how some neurological diseases arise.”&nbsp;

The study also established a connection between exposure to these chemicals and adverse neurological outcomes in children across the nation, urging further exploration into the relationship between chemical exposure and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/walking-is-a-powerful-tool-to-boost-brain-health-and-overall-well-being/">brain health</a>.



“Our findings suggest that more comprehensive scrutiny of the impacts of these common household chemicals on brain health is necessary. We hope our work will contribute to informed decisions regarding regulatory measures or behavioral interventions to minimize chemical exposure and protect human health,” Tesar concluded.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-household-chemicals">More about household chemicals</h2>



Common household chemicals, while useful for cleaning, maintenance, and personal care, can also pose <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pets-are-exposed-to-toxic-chemicals-in-our-homes/">health risks</a>. Exposure to these chemicals can occur through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact, leading to a range of health concerns:



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-irritation-and-allergies">Irritation and allergies</h3>



Chemicals such as ammonia, bleach, and certain fragrances can irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. Some people may also develop allergies to specific substances found in cleaning products or personal care items.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-respiratory-problems">Respiratory problems</h3>



Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in aerosol sprays, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cleaning-products-gain-weight/">cleaners</a>, and air fresheners can contribute to respiratory issues, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).&nbsp;



Long-term exposure to formaldehyde, often found in pressed-wood products and some fabrics, is associated with respiratory symptoms and cancer.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chemical-burns">Chemical burns</h3>



Strong acids or alkalis, such as those found in drain cleaners or oven cleaners, can cause severe chemical burns upon contact with the skin or eyes.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-poisoning">Poisoning</h3>



Ingesting household chemicals, either accidentally (a common issue with children) or intentionally, can lead to poisoning. Symptoms can range from mild (nausea, vomiting) to severe (organ failure, death), depending on the substance and amount ingested.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-endocrine-disruption">Endocrine disruption</h3>



Certain chemicals like phthalates and parabens, commonly found in plastics and personal care products, can mimic hormones in the body, potentially leading to reproductive health issues, obesity, diabetes, and thyroid irregularities.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neurological-effects">Neurological effects</h3>



Chronic exposure to some solvents and heavy metals (e.g., lead, mercury) in household products can affect the nervous system, leading to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, cognitive impairments, and in severe cases, neurodegenerative diseases.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cancer">Cancer</h3>



Some chemicals found in household products have been linked to cancer. For example, formaldehyde is classified as a carcinogen, and long-term exposure increases the risk of certain types of cancer.

The alarming rate at which insects are disappearing from our environment, especially urban areas, has become a critical concern. This catastrophic phenomenon is unfolding so swiftly it outpaces scientific study.



This urgency is underscored by the complexity of <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/are-insects-animals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insect life cycles</a>, including stages such as eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults, raising questions about whether all stages are declining at the same pace. Until recently, a comprehensive investigation into this matter was scarce.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-insect-population-decline-in-urban-areas">Studying insect population decline in urban areas</h2>



An alarming study has shed new light on this issue, focusing on the monitoring of both adult and larval stages of moths in an urban, subtropical setting over a year. 



This research marks a significant step forward, being the first to analyze multiple life stages of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-insect-decline-what-are-the-causes-and-consequences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insects</a> to understand the depth of their declines comprehensively. 



Additionally, it's among the few studies that probe insect population dynamics in lower latitudes, areas which are increasingly bearing the brunt of urban expansion and extreme temperatures.



Michael Belitz, the lead author of the study and a researcher at the <a href="https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Florida Museum of Natural History</a> during the investigation, highlighted the criticality of subtropical and tropical environments. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urban-heat-islands-and-insect-decline">Urban heat islands and insect decline</h2>



These regions not only harbor the highest insect abundance and diversity but are also experiencing the fastest rates of urbanization globally. 



Belitz pointed out, "The urban heat island effect in these areas may be especially detrimental to insects," emphasizing the adverse impact of urbanization on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insects-thrive-in-restored-habitats-near-solar-energy-facilities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insect populations</a>.



Cities, regardless of their geographical location, exacerbate the heat problem. In contrast to natural or rural settings, where a significant portion of sunlight is reflected back into space, urban materials like asphalt and concrete absorb and convert more light into heat. 



This phenomenon creates "heat islands" within cities, areas with temperatures up to 7 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than their surroundings, posing a substantial threat to local wildlife, especially in warmer regions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-illuminating-the-plight-of-moths">Illuminating the plight of moths</h2>



Robert Guralnick, co-author and curator of biodiversity informatics at the Florida Museum of Natural History, remarked on the broader implications of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-silent-language-decoding-the-chemical-signals-of-insects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insect</a> declines. "There's no doubt that insect declines are a real phenomenon." 



He further noted the challenge in pinpointing where these declines are most acute, whether in tropical or temperate regions, emphasizing the need for detailed research across various environments.



The team's innovative approach involved collecting moths from several locations across Alachua County, Florida, with different levels of urban development. 



Capturing adult moths proved straightforward, using light sources as lures. However, locating caterpillars was more challenging due to their habitat in the tree canopy and their indifference to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-insects-seem-to-be-attracted-to-light-has-long-been-a-mystery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">artificial light</a>. 



Despite these obstacles, the importance of including caterpillars in the study was clear, as Belitz noted, "Caterpillars are an important food source for breeding birds."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-size-matters-the-fate-of-macro-and-micro-moths">Size matters: The fate of macro and micro moths</h2>



To estimate caterpillar abundance, the team utilized an inventive method involving the collection of larval excrement. 



By placing funnels with attached jars beneath trees and weighing the collected pellets weekly, they could infer caterpillar population sizes.



After a year of diligent work, over 35,000 moths were collected and categorized as either macro- or micro-moths. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/luna-moth-tails-have-only-one-purpose-evading-bats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Macro moths</a>, such as luna and io moths, are known for their large wings and ability to travel long distances. 



Micro moths, defined in this study as those 10 millimeters or less in length, encompass a vast array of species with cloak-like wings, displaying a bewildering diversity of beiges and browns.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-both-large-and-small-moths-share-a-similar-fate">Both large and small moths share a similar fate</h2>



Both large and small <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-ermine-moths-effortlessly-produce-ultrasonic-warning-sounds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moths</a> face declines, but not in the ways previously thought. Larger moths, once believed to be better at navigating urban challenges due to their ability to travel greater distances, are actually at a disadvantage. 



The research found that larger moths fared worse in urban areas compared to their smaller counterparts, contradicting earlier findings from a study in Belgium. 



According to lead researcher Michael Belitz, the discrepancy likely stems from the difference in climate between temperate Europe and subtropical Florida, with larger moths in warmer climates expending more energy to cool down. 



This observation extends to other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/understanding-how-insects-distinguish-between-sugars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insects</a>, suggesting a broader pattern where urbanization favors smaller body sizes due to reduced metabolic stress.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diet-may-be-the-key-to-urban-insect-survival">Diet may be the key to urban insect survival</h2>



The diet of moths also plays a crucial role in their urban survival. Moths that feed on a variety of plants are more adaptable to city life than those with specialized diets, which quickly decline with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/city-moths-develop-smaller-wings-survive-light-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">urban development</a>. This adaptability underscores the importance of dietary diversity for survival in changing environments.



Despite focusing on protected areas, the study observed significant declines in moth populations, indicating that even these spaces are not immune to the impacts of urbanization. 



Robert Guralnick, a co-researcher, pointed out the misconception that city parks, which appear natural, actually host significantly altered communities compared to undisturbed wildlife areas. 



“You might think that you’re looking at a natural environment when you walk into a city park, because it looks intact,” Guralnick said. “The truth is, what you see is a completely different community than those that exist in places like wildlife management areas.”



The findings are particularly alarming considering they come from Alachua County, a region in Florida less urbanized than many others, hinting at the widespread nature of biodiversity loss.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-and-conservation-efforts">Implications and conservation efforts</h2>



The situation, however, is not beyond hope. Belitz emphasizes the potential for urban and suburban areas to support <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/butterfly-genome-has-barely-changed-after-250-million-years-of-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moth populations</a> through conscious efforts to enhance their habitats. 



Planting native vegetation can attract and sustain a variety of pollinators, including moths, thereby increasing biodiversity. 



Additionally, reducing light pollution, which disorients and endangers moths and other nocturnal insects, presents a simple yet effective way to support these vital members of the ecosystem.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insects-moths-and-humans-coexisting-in-urban-areas">Insects, moths and humans coexisting in urban areas</h2>



In summary, this study unveils the stark reality of declining insect populations, especially moths, in urban environments, revealing how the relentless march of urbanization and the ensuing heat islands pose significant threats to insect biodiversity. 



By meticulously examining both the adult and larval stages of moths, the research offers unprecedented insights into the challenges these creatures face, from the subtropical climates of Florida to the urban heat traps of cities worldwide. 



Yet, amidst the alarming findings lies a beacon of hope: the potential for positive human intervention. Through simple actions such as cultivating native plants and minimizing light pollution, we can forge a path towards mitigating the impact of urbanization on moths and other vital insect species, ensuring their survival and the preservation of our planet's intricate web of life.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

According to ESA, Lesotho is the only nation in the world that lies completely above 1,000 m in elevation. The country is famous for its tall mountains and narrow valleys, and is known as Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky."



Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes a new map of Mars that is providing insight into the planet’s watery past. The map also reveals where future missions could safely land on Mars.&nbsp;



The map has been created over the last decade using observations of water-rich rocks and mineral deposits. The images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.



"A big surprise is the prevalence of these minerals, with the map revealing hundreds of thousands of water-affected locations in the oldest parts of the planet," says ESA. "The new data will help answer exciting questions about Mars’ climate history, whether water was globally persistent or confined to short, intense episodes, and whether the conditions were ever suitable for life."



"Specifically, the map shows the locations and abundances of aqueous minerals. These are from rocks that have been chemically altered by the action of water in the past, and have typically been transformed into clays and salts."



According to John Carter of the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), our collective understanding of Mars has been oversimplified. He explained that planetary scientists have tended to think that only a few types of clay minerals on Mars were created during its wet period, then as the water gradually dried up, salts were produced across the planet.



The new map shows that the composition of Mars is much more complicated than what we thought. For example, while many salts formed after Martian clays, there are some salts that are presumed to be older than some of the clays.&nbsp;



“The evolution from lots of water to no water is not as clear cut as we thought, the water didn’t just stop overnight. We see a huge diversity of geological contexts, so that no one process or simple timeline can explain the evolution of the mineralogy of Mars. That’s the first result of our study. The second is that if you exclude life processes on Earth, Mars exhibits a diversity of mineralogy in geological settings just as Earth does,” said Carter.

The experts found that the muscle metabolism of cavefish has been genetically reprogrammed over time. As a result, the animals have experienced major changes in their morphology and behavior. Despite these changes, however, the cavefish remain healthy and fit.



The research may provide new clues about the evolutionary consequences of prolonged physical inactivity in humans.&nbsp;



“It’s no surprise that people are moving less and less as technology has advanced,” said Rohner. “With cavefish, we have a unique system where we can study what might happen if people remained couch potatoes over very, very long periods of time.”

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> some of the most incredible waves in the world, as seen by Landsat satellites.



"With more than 370,000 miles of coastline on Earth, there are plenty of places where epic waves build up, curl over, and hurtle toward the shore.- much to the thrill of surfers," says NASA. "There are some places where these waves are so magnificent that they can be seen from space."



"With the broad perspective of satellites, we can see how these iconic waves develop into the world’s tallest, longest, fastest, and heaviest."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes why satellite images and measurements of our planet have become "essential to our survival, offering a new outlook of our world."&nbsp;



Rising sea levels pose one of the biggest societal threats associated with climate change. According to ESA, satellite altimeter missions such as Copernicus Sentinel-6 are essential in monitoring global and regional changes in sea level.



"Unbeknown to many, the island of Crete, Greece, plays an important role in the Copernicus satellite altimetry constellation and on an international stage," reports ESA.



"Satellite altimetry data have to be continuously monitored at the ESA’s Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration where different techniques have pioneered the use of transponders to provide the best measurements to validate satellite altimeters in space soon after launch."



Dr. Craig Donlon explains that, by understanding planet Earth through satellite measurements, we are able to find evidence of change.&nbsp;
