This phenomenon occurs when the moon is at its closest to Earth during its full phase, making it larger and brighter.



The Hunter’s Moon got its name from the historical practice of hunters utilizing the bright moonlight to track game and gather food in preparation for winter. This full moon rises soon after sunset, extending the period of illumination more than usual.



As it ascends, the Hunter’s Moon appears particularly large and orange, a visual effect produced by its lower position on the horizon and the scattering of light in the atmosphere.



This lunar phase holds cultural significance across various traditions, representing a time for preparation and gathering, underscoring the importance of readiness for the impending colder months.



The Hunter’s Moon is generally in October -- although once every four years it makes an appearance in November.

When these solar flares and CMEs occur, they eject enormous clouds of charged gas into space, sometimes <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-largest-ever-solar-storm-discovered-through-tree-rings/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">directly toward Earth</a>, traveling at incredible speeds. These events can disrupt various technological systems on Earth, including power grids, communications, GPS navigation, and air travel. <a href="https://www.spaceweather.com/">Space Weather</a>, which monitors solar and Earth interactions, had anticipated the emergence of this sunspot group even before its capture by the Solar Dynamics Observatory. The size of the sunspot cluster is so immense that it influences the sun’s vibrational patterns.&nbsp;



Helioseismologists, using these vibrations, detected the sunspot group while it was still on the sun’s far side, with parts of the group yet to fully emerge into view.

According to earthsky.org, there is potential for Earth-directed M and X solar flares in the coming days. Chris Wicklund, a meteorologist, noted that these sunspots have been actively flaring, suggesting that the upcoming weeks could be significant as the solar particles reach Earth. According to him, this sunspot region is one of the largest observed in the current solar cycle.

In a groundbreaking discovery, <a href="https://onlinelearning.hms.harvard.edu/hmx/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard Medical School</a> (HMS) scientists have revealed that Staphylococcus aureus, a common skin bacterium, can directly cause itch by acting on nerve cells. 



This new understanding, reported in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2023.10.019" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cell</a>, unravels a piece of the complex puzzle of itch and explains the persistent itching associated with skin conditions like eczema and atopic dermatitis.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-molecular-chain-reaction">Molecular chain reaction</h2>



These conditions often disrupt the skin’s microbial balance, leading to an overgrowth of S. aureus. Previously, it was believed that the accompanying skin inflammation was the primary cause of itch in these cases. However, this new research demonstrates that S. aureus alone can trigger itch through a specific molecular chain reaction, culminating in the urge to scratch.



“We’ve identified an entirely novel mechanism behind itch - the bacterium Staph aureus, which is found on almost every patient with the chronic condition atopic dermatitis. We show that itch can be caused by the microbe itself,” said senior author Isaac Chiu, an associate professor of Immunology at the Blavatnik Institute at HMS.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-managing-persistent-itch-nbsp">Managing persistent itch&nbsp;</h2>



The researchers found that S. aureus releases a chemical that activates a protein on nerve fibers that transmit signals from the skin to the brain. When mice were treated with an FDA-approved anti-clotting medicine that blocks the activation of this protein, there was a significant interruption in the itch-scratch cycle, providing symptom relief.



This discovery paves the way for the development of new oral and topical treatments to manage persistent itch in various conditions linked to skin microbiome imbalances, such as atopic dermatitis, prurigo nodularis, and psoriasis. The repetitive scratching characteristic of these conditions can lead to skin damage and heightened inflammation.



“Itch can be quite debilitating in patients who suffer from chronic skin conditions. Many of these patients carry on their skin the very microbe we’ve now shown for the first time can induce itch,” said study first author Liwen Deng, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Chiu Lab.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



The researchers’ experiments involved exposing mice to S. aureus, leading to increasing itch intensity and worsening skin damage due to repetitive scratching.&nbsp;



The mice also developed alloknesis, becoming hypersensitive to normally non-itch-inducing stimuli. This hyperactive response mirrors the condition in patients with chronic skin ailments characterized by persistent itching.



To identify the bacterial trigger, the team experimented with various modified strains of S. aureus, each lacking specific molecular components. They discovered that the bacterial enzyme protease V8 was solely responsible for initiating itch in the mice. Human skin samples from patients with atopic dermatitis also showed elevated levels of S. aureus and the V8 enzyme.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights-nbsp">Critical insights&nbsp;</h2>



The study demonstrates that V8 triggers itch by activating a protein called PAR1 on skin neurons, which are responsible for relaying various signals, including itch, from the skin to the brain. The experiments further revealed that, once activated, PAR1 initiates a signal that the brain perceives as itch. This response was also observed in human neurons in lab experiments.



Intriguingly, the researchers found that various immune cells and inflammatory chemicals, typically implicated in skin allergies and known to cause itch, did not drive it after bacterial exposure.



“When we started the study, it was unclear whether the itch was a result of inflammation or not,” Deng said. “We show that these things can be decoupled, that you don’t necessarily have to have inflammation for the microbe to cause itch, but that the itch exacerbates inflammation on the skin.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



Furthermore, the researchers explored the potential of using PAR1 blockers. Mice treated with these blockers experienced a rapid improvement, with a notable decrease in their urge to scratch and subsequent skin damage.



Overall, these findings highlight a novel mechanism for itch and offer potential pathways for the development of new treatments targeting the skin microbiome. 



The research underlines the importance of further exploring the molecular interactions between skin microbes and the nervous system to advance our understanding and management of itch in various skin conditions.

A forest modeling study has revealed important insights into how harvest rotations can be optimized for maximum carbon sequestration, a critical factor in the fight against climate change.&nbsp;



The study was led by Catherine Carlisle as a graduate student, alongside Temesgen Hailemariam and Stephen Fitzgerald from the <a href="https://www.forestry.oregonstate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OSU College of Forestry</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-insights">New insights</h2>



The researchers determined that a site's productivity, reflecting the rate of tree growth and biomass accumulation, is a key determinant in establishing the ideal time period between timber harvests for maximizing above-ground carbon storage.&nbsp;



This finding is particularly relevant for forest managers in the Pacific Northwest, who are looking to balance timber harvesting with carbon sequestration.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-northwest-forests-nbsp">Northwest forests&nbsp;</h2>



Trees play a vital role in climate change mitigation by absorbing carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. The researchers noted that the carbon stored in the woody biomass of U.S. forests offsets about 13% of the country's greenhouse gas emissions.&nbsp;



The forests in the Northwest, covering nearly 25 million acres, are among the most productive globally. Specifically, the Oregon Coast Range forests stand out due to their high biomass and carbon densities, fostered by the region's favorable growing conditions.



“Whether short or long harvest rotations are better for maximizing carbon sequestration has been the subject of considerable debate,” said Carlisle. “Future management decisions will need to strive to meet harvest requirements while also striving to maintain high rates of carbon sequestration.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



The team used the McDonald-Dunn Research Forest, an 11,000-acre woodland managed by the College of Forestry, as the area for modeling. This forest, home to the Douglas-fir, Oregon's state tree, was chosen due to its varied productivity levels. The study was focused on over 300 stands.



The researchers utilized the Forest Vegetation Simulator, a software suite, to predict vegetation changes in response to different management activities or natural disturbances.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-settling-the-debate">Settling the debate</h2>



“Some forest scientists have argued that multiple but shorter rotations lead to greater sequestration rates because of the accelerated growth rates of younger trees compared to mature or old-growth trees,” said Carlisle, who is now a forest carbon analyst at Finite Carbon.&nbsp;



“Others say frequent harvesting won’t allow forest carbon to rebound after each subsequent rotation, and thus longer periods between clearcutting are a better choice. And depending on who you ask, thinning will either enhance forest carbon uptake by facilitating growth in residual trees, or hurt it by removing above-ground biomass.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-researchers-learned-nbsp">What the researchers learned&nbsp;</h2>



The study revealed that for highly productive stands, 60-year rotations with a low-intensity thinning at 40 years maximized carbon storage.&nbsp;



By contrast, less productive sites showed optimal carbon storage with longer rotations of 80 or 120 years, requiring multiple thinning entries to manage understory vegetation and promote Douglas-fir growth.



“On these longer rotations, multiple entries for thinning were required to prevent buildup of understory vegetation that would have suppressed the growth of overstory Douglas-fir,” Carlisle said.



Moderately productive stands were found to perform the best with 80-year rotations and two low-intensity thinning treatments between harvests, she added.

On November 17, 2023, Earth's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/limiting-global-warming-to-1-5-degrees-celsius-would-save-billions-of-lives/">global temperature</a> exceeded 2 degrees Celsius (2°C) above pre-industrial levels for the first time.&nbsp;



This critical environmental milestone was reported in ERA5, the fifth reanalysis of the global climate by <a href="https://www.ecmwf.int/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ECMWF</a>, implemented as part of the Copernicus Climate Change Service.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shocking-temperature-records">Shocking temperature records</h2>



The ERA5 data, which covers the period from 1940 to the present, indicated that on November 17, the global surface air temperature was 2.07°C higher than the pre-industrial average, a benchmark period from 1850-1900 before the widespread use of fossil fuels.&nbsp;



Additionally, provisional data for November 18 showed a temperature anomaly of 2.06°C above the pre-industrial level.



This alarming development, released just before the commencement of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Dubai, brings the issue of climate change into sharp focus.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-time-for-action-is-now">The time for action is now</h2>



“The ERA5 record now contains two days where global temperatures exceed the pre-industrial level by more than 2°C," said <a href="https://climate.copernicus.eu/">Copernicus Climate Change Service</a> (C3S) Director Carlo Buontempo.



"That this should happen in the same month that world leaders will gather to take stock of progress towards meeting Paris Agreement commitments at COP28 sends a very clear message - the time for definitive action to tackle climate change is now."



“While exceeding the 2°C threshold for a number of days does not mean that we have breached the Paris Agreement targets, the more often that we exceed this threshold, the more serious the cumulative effects of these breaches will become."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hottest-november-ever">Hottest November ever</h2>



The ERA5 data also revealed that the global surface air temperature on November 17 was 1.17°C above the average for the 1991-2020 reference period, suggesting that November 2023 is on track to be the warmest November recorded.



The ERA5 data are part of the ERA5T dataset, which provides preliminary climate data with a delay of up to five days. These data will undergo verification and will be included in the final ERA5 dataset after the standard 2-3 month quality control period.



The report underscores the urgent need for comprehensive and decisive action to address climate change, a critical topic for discussion at the upcoming COP28.

New research has shed light on the coloration of striped skunks. The study reveals that the iconic black and white stripe markings of skunks are less prevalent in areas with fewer mammalian predators.



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spotted-skunk-dna-helps-identify-new-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Skunks</a> are widely recognized for their distinct black and white coloration, which acts as a warning signal for their toxic anal spray. Interestingly, there is considerable variation in their fur color across the North American continent, ranging from all-black to various patterns of black and white stripes and even all-white individuals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iconic-skunk-stripes">Iconic skunk stripes</h2>



The study's findings point towards "relaxed selection" as a key factor in this variation. Relaxed selection occurs when environmental changes reduce the need for a certain trait, in this case, the skunks' black and white pelage.



<a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/people/person/Tim-Caro-d795dfe6-b3f7-4d2f-9d6c-506da26408f2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Tim Caro</a> from the University of Bristol's <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/biology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Biological Sciences</a> explains, “Warning coloration is an antipredator defense... Yet some warningly colored prey show rather different advertisements even within the same species.”



Researcher Hannah Walker from the <a href="https://www.umt.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Montana</a> documented the distribution of skunk pelage colors across North America using museum specimens and analyzed various environmental variables. 



The study found that in areas with fewer mammalian predators, there was greater variation in fur color. This occurred even within the same litter. Conversely, in regions with a higher predator presence, skunks displayed less color variation.



Interestingly, the study also examined the role of birds of prey, such as owls and raptors. While these predators influenced skunk coloration, the effect was less pronounced, possibly due to their inferior sense of smell and lower deterrence by the skunks' smell-based defenses.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-skunk-stripes-and-future-implications">Skunk stripes and future implications</h2>



“Our results indicate that relaxed predation pressure is key to warning signal variation in this species, whereas stronger pressure leads to signal conformity and stronger signals,” Professor Caro stated. This study not only explains the color variation in skunks but also opens doors to understanding coloration evolution in other species.



The research team plans to extend their study to other <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/the-science-behind-the-smell-of-a-skunk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">skunk</a> species in North America to see if similar patterns of relaxed selection and color variation are evident. Prof Caro adds, “If relaxed selection operates within species, it should do so across prey species too. More broadly, this study provides another brick in the wall of explaining the evolution of coloration in nature.”

Coastal river deltas are under an enormous amount of strain and the dangers they face extend beyond climate change, according to a new study from <a href="https://www.lunduniversity.lu.se/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lund University</a> and Utrecht University.&nbsp;



The researchers have identified the pressures that pose the biggest threats by analyzing possible future development across 49 coastal river deltas worldwide.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ineffective-governance-nbsp">Ineffective governance&nbsp;</h2>



The results suggest that poor environmental governance is the biggest threat to the sustainability of deltas. This is particularly the case in Africa and Asia.



Study lead author Murray Scown is an associate senior lecturer at the Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies.



“We can clearly show that many risks are not linked to climate," said Scown. "While climate change is a global problem, other important risk factors like land subsidence, population density and ineffective governance are local problems."&nbsp;



"Risks to deltas will only increase over time, so now is the time for governments to take action."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-sustainable-development">Global sustainable development</h2>



Home to more than half a billion people, coastal river deltas support agriculture, fisheries, cities, and unique ecosystems.&nbsp;



"Deltas play a critical role in the ambition to achieve global sustainable development given their relatively large shares in population and productive croplands, as well as their precarious low-lying position between upstream river basin development and rising seas," wrote the researchers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sea-level-rise-nbsp">Sea-level rise&nbsp;</h2>



The experts noted that the low elevation of deltas means that they are highly exposed to risks from relative sea-level rise, flooding, and salinization.&nbsp;



"As a result of these risks and further urbanization, ecosystems in deltas are increasingly degraded or lost," wrote the researchers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-uncertain-future">Uncertain future</h2>



The loss of delta environments could have major consequences. Despite the importance of deltas for sustainable development, the future of deltas around the globe remain highly uncertain and unexplored, the researchers noted.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



The team analyzed five different IPCC scenarios for global development in deltas all over the world to predict possible risks throughout the rest of the century. The study was focused on 13 primary risk factors.&nbsp;



The experts studied famous deltas such as the Nile and the Mississippi, but also included deltas that are less well-known such as the Volta and Zambezi deltas.&nbsp;



"The 49 deltas analyzed for this research include the most populated and largest coastal deltas in the world, as well as a range of smaller and less populated deltas to provide a representative sample of the world’s deltas across climates, biomes, and socio-economic development states," wrote the study authors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights">Critical insights</h2>



The analysis revealed that, under all five scenarios, the biggest threats to coastal river deltas are population density, land subsidence, sea-level rise, crop land use, and ineffective governance.



Land subsidence was found to be the greatest risk factor for the Mekong delta in Vietnam, while extreme sea levels are among the most concerning risk factors for deltas in China and several other parts of the world.&nbsp;



Under certain scenarios, population density was the biggest future threat for the Nile, Niger, and the Ganges deltas.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potentially-devastating-consequences-nbsp">Potentially devastating consequences&nbsp;</h2>



“Analyzed all together, we can see that the Asian mega-deltas are at greatest risk, with potentially devastating consequences for millions of people, and for the environment," said Scown.&nbsp;



"They are under pressure from population growth, intense agricultural land use, relative sea-level rise, and lagging adaptation readiness."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgent-action-is-needed">Urgent action is needed</h2>



Study co-author Philip Minderhoud, assistant professor at Wageningen University and Research, said that instead of sitting back, governments need to think long-term, and put plans in place to reduce or mitigate risks.&nbsp;



"In the Mekong delta, for example, the Vietnamese government are making strong efforts to restrict future groundwater extraction in the delta to reduce land subsidence and salinization," said Minderhoud.

A very intriguing study has unveiled a new aspect of bacterial behavior, revealing that bacteria possess the ability to create "memories" that influence their strategies, including resistance to antibiotics and the formation of bacterial swarms. 



This discovery opens new pathways for combating dangerous infections and addressing the growing concern of antibiotic-resistant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antibiotic-resistant-bacteria-have-been-found-in-clouds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacteria</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature-of-bacteria-memories">Nature of bacteria memories</h2>



Contrary to what one might expect, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-can-break-down-pet-pollution-in-ocean-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacteria</a> memories are not akin to human experiences, such as recalling a childhood birthday party. Instead, they are more comparable to information storage in computers. 



Researchers at <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Texas at Austin</a> have found that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antibiotic-resistant-bacteria-can-jump-between-healthy-pets-and-owners/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">E. coli bacteria</a> use iron levels as a mechanism to store information about their environment and behaviors. This information can then be activated in response to specific stimuli and passed down to subsequent generations.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iron-the-key-element">Iron: The key element</h2>



"Iron, one of the most abundant elements on Earth, plays a crucial role in this process," explained Souvik Bhattacharyya, the lead author and a provost early career fellow in the <a href="https://molecularbiosci.utexas.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Molecular Biosciences</a> at UT. He noted that variations in iron levels within bacterial cells correlate with different bacterial behaviors. 



For instance, bacteria with lower iron levels exhibited enhanced swarming abilities, while those forming biofilms -- dense, sticky mats on surfaces -- showed higher iron levels. Interestingly, these "iron memories" persist for up to four generations and fade by the seventh.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-applications-for-bacteria-memories">Applications for bacteria memories</h2>



This discovery is not just a mere scientific curiosity but has significant implications for medical and environmental applications. 



"Iron levels are definitely a target for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/intestinal-bacteria-could-help-you-live-a-very-long-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">therapeutics</a> because iron is an important factor in virulence," said Bhattacharyya.

Babies as young as four months old exhibit signs of self-awareness, according to an innovative study from the <a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/index.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Birmingham</a>.&nbsp;



The research reveals new details about how infants interact with the space around them and develop self-awareness.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



The study was carried out in the Birmingham BabyLab, where experts presented babies with a visual stimulus: a ball on a screen moving towards or away from them.&nbsp;



When the ball appeared closest on the screen, a small vibration was given to the babies' hands, simulating a "touch," while their brain activity was closely monitored. This critical data collection took place at Goldsmiths, University of London.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peripersonal-space">Peripersonal space</h2>



“Our findings indicate that even in the first few months of life, before babies have even learned to reach for objects, the multisensory brain is wired up to make links between what babies see and what they feel. This means they can sense the space around them and understand how their bodies interact with that space. This is sometimes referred to as peripersonal space," explained lead researcher Dr. Giulia Orioli.



“Of course, humans do this all the time as adults, using our combined senses to perceive where we are in space and making predictions about when we will touch an object or not. But now that we know that babies in the early stages of their development begin to show signs of this, it opens up questions about how much of these abilities are learnt, or innate.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-development-of-self-awareness-nbsp">Development of self-awareness&nbsp;</h2>



From just four months old, infants demonstrated enhanced somatosensory (tactile) brain activity when they experienced a touch following an object moving towards them.&nbsp;



This discovery is pivotal in understanding how self-awareness develops from an early age.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-touch">Unexpected touch</h2>



The researchers also explored how an unexpected touch influenced older infants in the study. They observed that eight-month-old babies showed signs of surprise in their brain activity when the touch on their hand was preceded by the ball moving away from them on the screen.&nbsp;



“Seeing the older babies show surprise responses suggests that they had not expected the touch due to the visual direction the object was moving in," said study co-author Professor Andrew Bremner.&nbsp;



"This indicates that as babies proceed through their first year of life, their brains construct a more sophisticated awareness of how their body exists in the space around them.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-nbsp">Future research&nbsp;</h2>



The team plans to expand their research to include both younger and older participants. This may provide a more comprehensive understanding of the developmental trajectory of multisensory abilities.



The researchers are particularly interested in examining the brain activity of adults in similar scenarios. By doing so, they hope to gain insights into the mature forms of brain activity that infants are gradually developing towards.&nbsp;



The team also plans to explore the presence of these multisensory abilities in newborn babies.&nbsp;



“It is a challenge working with newborns, as they spend such a large portion of their time sleeping and eating, but we are starting to have some success working with this age group, and it is going to be fascinating to see if babies only a few days old have the foundations of a sense of their bodies in space. If so, it could be that we are looking at the origins of human consciousness," said Dr. Orioli.

Jonathan Blutinger, a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia's Creative Machines Lab, along with Professor Hod Lipson and Professor Christen Cooper from Pace University Nutrition and Dietetics, have examined the complexities of this technology in a recent article published in <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41538-023-00182-6" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">npj Science of Food</a>.

The researchers also emphasized the health implications of 3D food printing. “We have an enormous problem with the low-nutrient value of processed foods,” said Cooper.&nbsp;



“3D food printing will still turn out processed foods, but perhaps the silver lining will be, for some people, better control and tailoring of nutrition--personalized nutrition. It may also be useful in making food more appealing to those with swallowing disorders by mimicking the shapes of real foods with the pureed texture foods that these patients--millions in the U.S. alone--require.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-food-experiences-nbsp">Unique food experiences&nbsp;</h2>



Another promising avenue is the use of laser cooking with 3D food printing, allowing for precise flavors and textures.&nbsp;



This can create unique food experiences and cater to specific dietary restrictions, making meal planning more convenient for various groups, including athletes and individuals in nursing homes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-remain-nbsp">Challenges remain&nbsp;</h2>



However, challenges remain in commercializing 3D food printing. “Because 3D food printing is still a nascent technology, it needs an ecosystem of supporting industries such as food cartridge manufacturers, downloadable recipe files, and an environment in which to create and share these recipes," said Blutinger.



Furthermore, the experts noted that printed food will likely require novel ingredient compositions due to the unique assembly process.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-food-safety">Food safety</h2>



The technology could also improve food safety, which is especially relevant in the post-COVID-19 era. "With more emphasis on food safety following the COVID-19 pandemic, food prepared with less human handling could lower the risk of foodborne illness and disease transmission. This seems like a win-win concept for all of us," said Blutinger.



While 3D-printed food technology holds immense promise for transforming how we cook and consume food, it also presents a range of challenges that need to be addressed. The Columbia team is paving the way for further research and development in this exciting field.

In May 2019, Cyclone Idai, one of nature's most formidable forces, unleashed its fury on Mozambique's <a href="https://gorongosa.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gorongosa National Park</a>. This event set the stage for a fascinating study, merging the unstoppable force of natural disasters with cutting-edge wildlife research technology. 



An international team of researchers, spearheaded by <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Princeton University</a>, documented the cyclone's impact in unprecedented detail, providing new insights into how large-mammal communities respond to natural disasters.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unmatched-technological-arena">Unmatched technological arena</h2>



Gorongosa National Park, renowned for its technological sophistication, was equipped with an extensive network of trail cameras, GPS collars, and other instruments. 



This setup, as Hallie Brown, a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton’s Department of Ecology and Environmental Biology, noted, offered an "unprecedented opportunity" to observe the cyclone's effects in real-time. 



The resulting study was authored by Brown and her colleagues, including <a href="https://environmenthalfcentury.princeton.edu/experts/robert-pringle" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Robert Pringle</a>, an EEB professor, and Ryan Long, an associate professor of wildlife sciences at the <a href="https://www.uidaho.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Idaho</a>.



“This is the first study that has ever been able to track the real-time responses of a large-mammal community to a natural disaster,” said Pringle.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-in-the-midst-of-a-natural-disaster">Wildlife in the midst of a natural disaster</h2>



The researchers meticulously observed the animal behavior before, during, and after Cyclone Idai. Brown recollects the harrowing experience. 



“We watched the waters rise,” Brown recalled. “We watched the animals’ reactions in the hours, days, weeks after the cyclone: how some of them escaped the floodwaters, and some of them didn’t. Our team used the data we had from before, during and after the storm to create, not just a description of this one event, but a broader set of expectations, so managers can better anticipate the effects of increasingly severe weather events.” 



Their observations revealed that animal size was a critical survival factor. Smaller species like oribi and reedbuck suffered significant losses, while larger herbivores like nyala, kudu, sable, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-elephant-day-understanding-celebrating-and-protecting-earths-gentle-giants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elephants</a> recorded no fatalities.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-cyclones-and-wildlife-collide">When cyclones and wildlife collide</h2>



The survival strategies of these animals were diverse. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carnivores-healthy-ecosystem/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bushbucks</a>, for example, sought refuge on termite mounds, using these natural hillocks as islands amid the flood. GPS data showed their desperate attempts to find higher ground, emphasizing the importance of topography in such natural disasters. 



In contrast, smaller animals not only struggled to escape the rising waters but also faced post-storm nutritional challenges, as the flood destroyed much of the low-lying vegetation they depended on.



Interestingly, this study mirrors findings from previous hurricane impact research on island populations, like lizards and spiders in the Bahamas, highlighting consistent survival patterns across different species and ecosystems. 



The research team advises wildlife managers to prioritize the evacuation of smaller and ecologically vulnerable species before storms and provide supplemental feeding post-disaster to mitigate the effects of lost vegetation.



Carnivores in Gorongosa, such as wild dogs, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/african-leopards-have-surprisingly-high-genetic-diversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">leopards</a>, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-lion-day-celebrating-the-king-of-the-jungle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lions</a>, fared well during the cyclone. Their prey were concentrated in upland areas, simplifying hunting. Remarkably, lions’ primary prey, warthogs, remained largely unaffected, staying in uplands for several months post-cyclone.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-power-of-collaboration">Power of collaboration</h2>



Hallie Brown lauds the collaborative nature of this study, which brought together experts from various fields like hydrology and large animal ecology. This multidisciplinary approach was key to understanding the complex interactions between the cyclone's impact and the park's wildlife.



In summary, Cyclone Idai's sweep through Gorongosa National Park offered a rare glimpse into how wildlife responds to natural disasters.

The Canadian wildfires of 2023 have set a new record for the largest area burned in the country's history. These fires not only devastated vast regions within Canada but also significantly impacted <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poor-air-quality-linked-to-cognitive-problems-in-infants/">air quality</a> across the Northern Hemisphere, extending as far as Europe and China.&nbsp;



A recent study led by Zhe Wang from the <a href="https://www.dlr.de/pa/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Atmospheric Physics</a> (IAP) provides a detailed analysis of this global environmental crisis.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



“There were photographs from New York City in July in news outlets around the world that showed the city trapped in an almost unbreathable orange haze like something out of a dystopian movie,” said Wang.&nbsp;



“But what we know about long-range transport of particulate matter means that the fires likely impacted Europe and Asia as well. We just didn't know to what extent.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deterioration-of-air-quality">Deterioration of air quality</h2>



The researchers used the Aerosol and Atmospheric Chemistry Model (IAP-AACM), a module of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Earth System Model (CAS-ESM), to simulate the dispersal of pollutants.&nbsp;



The findings revealed a marked deterioration of air quality across almost the entire Northern Hemisphere due to the Canadian wildfires.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-widespread-air-pollution">Widespread air pollution</h2>



Six major episodes of widespread air pollution were identified during Canada's wildfire season, severely affecting air quality in both Canada and the United States, and even reaching Europe and Asia.



These episodes resulted in unprecedented levels of PM2.5, fine particulate matter with diameters of 2.5 microns or less, known to be particularly harmful to health.&nbsp;



For example, on June 7, New York City experienced the worst air quality in over 50 years, with PM2.5 concentrations exceeding the World Health Organization's air-quality guidelines.&nbsp;



The study also revealed significant increases in PM2.5 levels in Europe, western, central, and east Asia, and even the Arctic region, due to the northward movement of the fires.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-greenhouse-gas-emissions-nbsp">Greenhouse gas emissions&nbsp;</h2>



Beyond the immediate impact on air quality, the wildfires also had a profound effect on greenhouse gas emissions. The researchers found that the CO2 levels due to the wildfires were substantially high, not only over North America but also over Europe and northwestern Asia.&nbsp;



This surge in greenhouse gases is particularly alarming as it effectively nullifies Canada's plan for reducing human-caused greenhouse gases.



“Canada's 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan has been wiped out by a single year of wildfires,” said study co-author Zifa Wang.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-destruction">Forest destruction</h2>



The Canadian wildfires wreaked havoc on forest ecosystems. The uncontrolled flames rapidly consumed vegetation, destroying habitats, and depleting food sources for wildlife.&nbsp;



Furthermore, the aftermath of wildfires often exposes the soil surface, triggering secondary disasters like soil erosion, sediment runoff, and landslides.



These occurrences highlight how wildfires are no longer merely a traditional ecological disturbance but have morphed into an environmental catastrophe.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-reserves-nbsp">Carbon reserves&nbsp;</h2>



Severe forest fires deplete carbon reserves in the vegetation and soil and disrupt the natural succession of forests. The result is a shift from forests to shrubland or grassland, with a consequent reduction in the carbon sequestration capacity of the ecosystem.



The worsening wildfire situation is not exclusive to Canada. Recent years have seen the Amazon Rainforest burning over 90,000 square kilometers in just 10 months in 2019, and the Australian bushfires devouring more than 243,000 square kilometers in 2019-2020.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



Ultimately, the 2023 Canadian wildfires highlight the interconnectedness of environmental issues. The far-reaching impact on air quality and greenhouse gas emissions underscores the need for global awareness and action in addressing climate change.



"Aside from the direct emissions from forest fires, the peat fires beneath the surface might smolder for several months or even longer and release substantial amounts of CO2. The substantial amounts of greenhouse gases from forest and peat fires might contribute to the positive feedback to the climate, potentially accelerating global warming," wrote the researchers.



"To better understand the comprehensive environmental effects of wildfires and their interactions with the climate system, more detailed research based on advanced observations and Earth System Models is essential."



The study is published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00376-023-3241-0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Advances in Atmospheric Sciences</a>.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

The map has been created over the last decade using observations of water-rich rocks and mineral deposits. The images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.



"A big surprise is the prevalence of these minerals, with the map revealing hundreds of thousands of water-affected locations in the oldest parts of the planet," says ESA. "The new data will help answer exciting questions about Mars’ climate history, whether water was globally persistent or confined to short, intense episodes, and whether the conditions were ever suitable for life."



"Specifically, the map shows the locations and abundances of aqueous minerals. These are from rocks that have been chemically altered by the action of water in the past, and have typically been transformed into clays and salts."



According to John Carter of the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), our collective understanding of Mars has been oversimplified. He explained that planetary scientists have tended to think that only a few types of clay minerals on Mars were created during its wet period, then as the water gradually dried up, salts were produced across the planet.



The new map shows that the composition of Mars is much more complicated than what we thought. For example, while many salts formed after Martian clays, there are some salts that are presumed to be older than some of the clays.&nbsp;



“The evolution from lots of water to no water is not as clear cut as we thought, the water didn’t just stop overnight. We see a huge diversity of geological contexts, so that no one process or simple timeline can explain the evolution of the mineralogy of Mars. That’s the first result of our study. The second is that if you exclude life processes on Earth, Mars exhibits a diversity of mineralogy in geological settings just as Earth does,” said Carter.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.stowers.org/">Stowers Institute for Medical Research</a> describes how cavefish adapted to a sedentary lifestyle over tens of thousands of years. 



The experts found that the muscle metabolism of cavefish has been genetically reprogrammed over time. As a result, the animals have experienced major changes in their morphology and behavior. Despite these changes, however, the cavefish remain healthy and fit.



The research may provide new clues about the evolutionary consequences of prolonged physical inactivity in humans.&nbsp;



“It’s no surprise that people are moving less and less as technology has advanced,” said Rohner. “With cavefish, we have a unique system where we can study what might happen if people remained couch potatoes over very, very long periods of time.”

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes why satellite images and measurements of our planet have become "essential to our survival, offering a new outlook of our world."&nbsp;



Rising sea levels pose one of the biggest societal threats associated with climate change. According to ESA, satellite altimeter missions such as Copernicus Sentinel-6 are essential in monitoring global and regional changes in sea level.



"Unbeknown to many, the island of Crete, Greece, plays an important role in the Copernicus satellite altimetry constellation and on an international stage," reports ESA.



"Satellite altimetry data have to be continuously monitored at the ESA’s Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration where different techniques have pioneered the use of transponders to provide the best measurements to validate satellite altimeters in space soon after launch."



Dr. Craig Donlon explains that, by understanding planet Earth through satellite measurements, we are able to find evidence of change.&nbsp;
