Black holes have baffled and fascinated both scientists and the public for decades. Their enormous gravity and mysterious interiors have led to endless debates, movies and books feeding our curiosity about what might be hidden inside these cosmic objects.



Now, recent findings from the University of Sheffield point to surprising possibilities linked to time and dark energy.



Researchers suggest that black holes might shift into what they are calling “white holes,” which could throw matter and even time back out into our universe.

His latest collaboration, entitled ‘Black Hole Singularity Resolution in Unimodular Gravity from Unitarity,’ is now published in Physical Review Letters.



In it, the authors explore how conventional knowledge breaks down at a black hole’s central point, known as the singularity.



“It has long been a question as to whether quantum mechanics can change our understanding of black holes and give us insights into their true nature,” said Dr. Gielen. 



“In <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/impossibility-paradox-calculating-incalculable-quantum-realm-particles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum mechanics</a>, time as we understand it cannot end as systems perpetually change and evolve.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-linking-time-and-dark-energy">Linking time and dark energy</h2>



In this theoretical framework, the team positions dark energy as a potential measuring stick for time.

“We propose that time is measured by the dark energy that is everywhere in the Universe, and responsible for its current expansion. This is the pivotal new idea that allows us to grasp the phenomena occurring within a black hole.”



By framing time through dark energy, the researchers open fresh avenues for interpreting how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-evidence-suggests-that-dark-energy-comes-from-black-holes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black holes could evolve</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-white-holes-as-a-new-phase">White holes as a new phase</h2>



White holes are often portrayed as the reverse of black holes. Instead of trapping matter forever, they are thought to expel energy, matter, and even time back into cosmic space.



In the Sheffield study, co-written with Lucía Menéndez-Pidal from <a href="https://www.ucm.es/english" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Complutense University</a> of Madrid, this transformation from black hole to white hole occurs when quantum effects become significant at the singularity, replacing a terminal point with a new phase.



“Hypothetically you could have <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/schrodingers-cat-survives-in-quantum-superposition-for-a-record-shattering-23-minutes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">an observer</a> - a hypothetical entity - go through the black hole, through what we think of as a singularity and emerge on the other side of the white hole. It’s a highly abstract notion of an observer but it could happen, in theory,” Dr. Gielen added.



This scenario, though speculative, underscores the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-dark-matter-does-not-exist-and-the-universe-is-27-billion-years-old/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolving insights</a> into how physics might handle extreme conditions.

Their work relies on a simplified model known as a planar black hole. This version differs from conventional black holes, which are spherical, by featuring a flat boundary.

In unimodular gravity, this constant is partly integrated into how the theory sets up space and time.



Some physicists see it as a simpler way to handle <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/universe-expansion-rate-dark-energy-measured-11-billion-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dark energy</a> because it can separate how gravity affects geometry from how energy drives cosmic growth.



In this study, unimodular gravity underpins the argument that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-the-universe-remains-predictable-insights-from-quantum-mechanics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black hole singularities</a> might not mark the end of time.



By adjusting the underlying equations, the approach provides a path to include quantum effects that keep space and time going.



This aligns with the hypothesis that matter and time could be released as a white hole forms.

In a new study, Jens Højgaard Jensen and his team at <a href="https://ruc.dk/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roskilde University</a> in Denmark used dimensional analysis to craft an equation that captures the essence of flapping flight.



This formula not only accounts for the flapping frequencies of birds, insects, and bats but also includes the fin movements of diving animals like penguins and whales.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-validating-the-universal-flapping-equation">Validating the universal flapping equation</h2>



The researchers validated their model by comparing its predictions with existing data on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/amazing-fact-insect-wings-flap-faster-than-their-brain-speed-can-command/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wingbeat</a> frequencies of a variety of species, from bees and dragonflies to bats and hummingbirds.



Their findings reveal a consistent proportionality between the wing or fin-beat frequency and the square root of the animal's body mass divided by its wing area.



This universal equation of flapping frequencies holds true even when extending the research to fin strokes of diving creatures, including penguins and several whale species like the humpback and northern bottlenose.



The model's predictions closely align with observed data across these diverse forms of life.

Moreover, the researchers estimated that Quetzalcoatlus northropi, an extinct pterosaur and the largest known flying animal, would have flapped its massive 10 meter-square wings at a frequency of about 0.7 hertz. 



This insight into extinct species' movements is a testament to the robustness of the equation.

Despite these successes, the study faced limitations, particularly in gathering comprehensive data for swimming animals. The team often had to integrate data from multiple sources or estimate certain parameters.



Furthermore, the flapping equation may not apply to extremely small creatures, as the physics of fluid dynamics changes at very small scales. This finding has potential implications for the development of flying nanobots.

The frequency of wing flaps or fin strokes also ties into these factors. Larger animals, like whales and large birds, tend to have slower, more powerful strokes. In contrast, smaller creatures like insects and small birds flap their wings much more rapidly. This difference in frequency helps maintain the necessary balance of lift and thrust needed for their respective sizes and weights.



In addition to body mass and wing area, other factors such as wing shape, muscle power, and flight style (gliding vs. flapping) also significantly affect how animals move through air or water. A recent breakthrough in paleontology has shed light on the early evolution of sponges, one of the Earth's oldest known animal groups. Researchers have unearthed a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/470-million-year-old-animal-fossils-discovered-in-frances-cabrieres-biota/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossil</a> from the late Ediacaran period, around 550 million years ago, that offers new insights into this ancient lineage.



This finding from the Shibantan Biota in Hubei Province reveals a crown-group sponge, Helicolocellus, which showcases features that are both unique and instructive about the origins of marine life.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mystery-of-missing-sponge-fossils">Mystery of missing sponge fossils</h2>



Traditionally, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-sponges-discovered-in-unexplored-deep-sea-habitats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sponges</a> are viewed as the most basal and primitive group within the metazoans.



However, despite molecular estimates that suggest sponges appeared around 700 million years ago, concrete fossil evidence from before the Cambrian period (about 539 million years ago) was conspicuously absent.



This 160-million-year gap, often referred to as the "lost years," posed a significant mystery in the evolutionary timeline of sponges.



Two main hypotheses have tried to explain this absence. The first suggests that early sponges had mineralized spicules made of siliceous or calcareous materials, which should have left a fossil record. The lack of such fossils was attributed to potential issues with preservation due to the chemical composition of ancient porewaters.



The second hypothesis posits that the earliest sponges were non-biomineralizing, meaning they lacked hard, mineralized components, making their preservation in the fossil record more challenging.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovery-of-helicolocellus">Discovery of Helicolocellus</h2>



The discovery of Helicolocellus supports the latter hypothesis. This ancient sponge shows a structure strikingly similar to modern glass sponges, featuring a radially symmetric, conical body and a complex internal architecture including a possible central cavity and inferred excurrent canals.



Its surface is composed of a unique grid pattern, subdivided into progressively smaller boxes, reminiscent of structures seen in some Paleozoic sponges. 



Unlike its later relatives, however, Helicolocellus's grids are made of organic matter, not biomineralized spicules.

To solidify their findings, the research team conducted a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis using a morphological data matrix that included both extinct and extant animals.

This method involves observing the slight dimming of a star's light when a planet passes in front of it. TESS monitors large swaths of the sky, focusing on bright, nearby stars. This approach allows TESS to discover a diverse array of exoplanets, from Earth-sized rocky worlds to large gas giants.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-w-m-keck-observatory">W. M. Keck Observatory</h3>



The W. M. Keck Observatory is home to two of the world's largest optical and infrared telescopes. Each telescope has a 10-meter mirror, which provides exceptional sensitivity and resolution. Established in 1993, the observatory has contributed to numerous discoveries in astronomy. 



The high elevation and stable atmospheric conditions on Maunakea make it an ideal location for observing the universe. Keck Observatory plays a crucial role in follow-up observations of exoplanets discovered by TESS. 



By measuring the radial velocities of stars, Keck helps determine the masses of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exoplanet-found-in-the-habitable-zone-of-a-binary-star-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planets</a>, providing vital information about their composition and potential habitability. Together, TESS and Keck Observatory form a powerful partnership in the search for and study of exoplanets.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detailed-database-for-studying-exoplanets">Detailed database for studying exoplanets</h2>



The TESS-Keck Survey's Mass Catalog offers astronomers a detailed database to study the latest worlds found by TESS. 



This new resource paves the way for in-depth exploration of these exoplanets' properties and environments, especially those that might <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-have-identified-85-new-exoplanets-that-could-harbor-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">harbor life</a>.



The <a href="https://www.hawaii.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Hawaii</a> (UH) played a major role in this survey, which includes thousands of radial velocity (RV) observations.



These observations measure a star’s reflex motion caused by an orbiting planet’s gravity, revealing a diverse range of planet types beyond our solar system, from extreme environments to potentially <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/habitable-worlds-new-strategy-to-identify-planets-that-may-host-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitable worlds</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ground-based-observations">Ground-based observations</h2>



“The TESS-Keck Survey demonstrates the very important role of ground-based observations for advancing our understanding of the Universe and, in this case, planets outside our system,” said Dan Huber, an associate astronomer at IfA, co-author of the paper, and co-principal investigator of the TESS-Keck Survey. 



“Space telescopes like TESS can tell us about the sizes of planets, but follow-up observations such as those obtained with Keck provide mass measurements that are required to learn about what these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/habitable-exoplanet-gliese-12-b-only-40-light-years-away-earth-like-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planets</a> are made of.”



Huber, along with IfA astronomer Fei Dai and IfA alumna Ashley Chontos, collaborated with a global team to develop the new exoplanet catalog.



This effort involved analyzing 9,204 RV measurements, with over half taken during 301 observing nights using Keck Observatory’s planet-hunting spectrometer.



The team used the University of California Observatories’ Automated Planet Finder at Lick Observatory for additional radial velocities. Combined, these measurements allowed the calculation of masses for 120 confirmed and six candidate exoplanets.

“The Sun will eventually expand into a <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/the-luminous-galaxy-ngc-3783-and-a-blue-giant-star/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">giant star</a> after it has fused all hydrogen in its core,” explained Chontos, now a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton. 



“We have some ideas for what might happen to the planets in our solar system, but by directly observing these more evolved systems, we can begin to put together the puzzle pieces and tie the observations to the theory.”



The findings could help predict the fate of our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rare-glory-lights-effect-seen-exoplanet-wasp-76b-baffling-astronomers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet</a> when the Sun eventually swells and possibly engulfs the Earth.



By studying these evolved systems, researchers can better understand the processes that allow some exoplanets to survive this stage or remain in the process of being engulfed by their expanding stars.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovering-extreme-worlds">Discovering extreme worlds</h2>



In another notable discovery, Dai and <a href="https://www.caltech.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Caltech</a> student Ryan Rubenzahl found the largest rocky planet ever recorded (TOI-1347 b). 



The research suggests that rocky planets like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trappist-1-has-seven-earth-like-planets-that-may-support-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a> cannot have masses much more than 10 times that of Earth. Larger planets would likely accrete thick envelopes of lighter gases, becoming more similar to icy or gas giants in our solar system.



The TESS-Keck Survey’s discoveries highlight the critical role of combining space-based observations with ground-based follow-up. 



This approach not only enhances our understanding of exoplanets but also provides insights into the potential for life beyond Earth.

However, the researchers add a critical twist: stress can undermine these benefits. High or persistent stress levels act as a cognitive thief, reducing the mental resilience built through these activities.



“Different stress management strategies could be a good complement to existing lifestyle interventions in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/medical-breakthrough-new-vaccine-may-prevent-alzheimers-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alzheimer’s</a> prevention,” said lead author Manasa Shanta Yerramalla, a researcher at Karolinska.

The discovery process began in the late 1980s when researchers noticed that some individuals showed no symptoms of dementia despite having brain changes consistent with Alzheimer’s.&nbsp;

Each mentally stimulating activity adds a layer of protection, helping maintain normal cognitive function even as Alzheimer's disease progresses.

The researchers enrolled 113 participants from a memory clinic to study the relationship between cognitive reserve, cognition, and Alzheimer’s biomarkers.&nbsp;



They also examined the impact of stress, measuring physiological stress (cortisol levels in saliva) and psychological stress (self-reported stress). Cortisol, often called the “stress hormone,” rises under pressure and acts as the body's alarm system.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stress-weakens-our-brain-s-defenses">Stress weakens our brain's defenses </h2>



The study revealed that while greater cognitive reserve improved cognition, higher <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cortisol-indicate-stressed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cortisol</a> levels weakened this beneficial relationship, indicating that stress erodes the protective layers of the mental fortress.



This discovery suggests that stress-reducing techniques like mindfulness exercises and meditation, which lower cortisol levels, could be powerful additions to existing lifestyle interventions. Building cognitive reserve through mental activities and managing stress could maintain brain defenses.



“These results might have clinical implications as an expanding body of research suggests that mindfulness exercises and meditation may reduce cortisol levels and improve cognition,” Yerramalla said.

Although the study factored in sleep medications, more research is needed to understand how poor sleep damages cognitive reserve.



The study opens new avenues for Alzheimer’s prevention by integrating stress management with lifestyle interventions. Understanding how stress affects cognition can lead to better strategies for maintaining cognitive health and preventing dementia.&nbsp;



The scientists plan to continue studying the association between stress, sleep disorders, and cognitive reserve in memory clinic patients to develop effective interventions for Alzheimer's prevention.

The southern cassowary, with its velociraptor-like legs and neon blue neck, stands as a modern-day dinosaur in the rainforests of northeast Australia. Fiercely territorial, these birds hiss and rumble when threatened. 



They have an imposing figure, standing five feet tall and weighing up to 165 pounds. "It's a modern-day dinosaur," said Peter Rowles, president of a community group dedicated to protecting these endangered <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/renewable-energy-is-the-latest-threat-to-bird-populations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-keystone-species-southern-cassowary">Keystone species: Southern cassowary</h2>



Cassowaries play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity in the rainforests of northeast Australia. One of their most important functions is seed dispersal. These birds consume a variety of fruits, some of which have seeds too large to be dispersed by other animals. 



After eating the fruits, cassowaries travel long distances, excreting the seeds in different locations. This process helps maintain plant diversity and forest structure, as the seeds have a better chance of germinating and growing into new plants far from the parent tree.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-collapse-of-ecological-networks">Collapse of ecological networks </h2>



If cassowaries go extinct, the rainforests will suffer significantly. Without these natural gardeners, many plant species that rely on cassowaries for seed dispersal would struggle to reproduce. 



This decline in plant diversity would impact other animals that depend on these plants for food and shelter. Over time, the entire ecosystem could degrade, leading to a loss of biodiversity and the collapse of ecological networks.



The Australian government lists the southern cassowary as <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/the-12-endangered-birds-most-at-risk-of-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">endangered</a>, with an estimated 4,500 remaining in the wild. These flightless birds are native to Australia, New Guinea, and some Pacific islands. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-threats-a-hostile-environment">Threats: A hostile environment</h2>



Studies show that their population has declined due to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urbanization-is-a-threat-to-78-of-the-worlds-bird-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitat loss</a>, car strikes, dog attacks, and climate change. Hence, conservation efforts are crucial to prevent their extinction and protect the delicate balance of their rainforest habitat.



"Cassowaries are not aggressive when they're treated well," said Rowles, noting that few recorded deaths have been caused by the species.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-southern-cassowary-attacks">Southern cassowary attacks</h2>



There are a few notable incidents related to cassowary attacks. In 1926, a young Australian boy tragically lost his life following an encounter with a cassowary. The boy had chased the bird, prompting a defensive response. The cassowary, feeling threatened, used its powerful legs and razor-sharp talons to strike back.



One of the talons severed the boy's jugular vein, leading to his death. This incident serves as a reminder of the potential danger posed by these large, territorial birds when they feel cornered or threatened.



Another notable incident occurred in 2019 in Florida, involving a man who kept a cassowary as a pet. The man fell on his property, and the cassowary attacked him. 



The bird’s sharp talons inflicted fatal injuries, leading to the man's death. This tragic event highlights the risks of keeping wild and potentially dangerous animals in domestic settings.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-the-dinosaur-bird">Protecting the dinosaur bird</h2>



Efforts to save cassowaries involve various strategies. Rowles' group runs a cassowary hospital for injured <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-population-north-america-dramatic-decline-lost-3-billion-birds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a>, redesigns roads to protect native habitats, and installs signs urging drivers to slow down. 



"We thought if we could save cassowaries, we also could save enough habitat to keep a lot of other species alive," said Rowles.



The World Wide Fund for Nature (<a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WWF</a>) warns that Australia's extinction rate will likely increase. "There is so much that has to be done and resources are not available to have a significant impact," said Darren Grover, WWF Australia's acting chief conservation officer.



"We're looking at around 2,000 species on the Australian government's threatened species list and more and more species are added to that list yearly."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-national-recovery-plan">National recovery plan</h2>



The Australian government has a national recovery plan to save the iconic cassowary bird. This plan involves collaboration with Indigenous and conservation groups. Much of the country's conservation efforts focus on protecting keystone species, a strategy developed by zoologists in the 1960s. 



"This is the best approach when resources are limited, as it provides flow-on effects to other animals in that habitat," said Grover.

Cassowaries are vital to their ecosystem, yet they are naturally cranky and powerful. "Cassowaries are amazing species and whenever you get to see them in the wild is fantastic," said Grover. "But be careful because they are naturally cranky birds, they are big and powerful and we need to give them some space."



The fight to save the southern cassowary reflects broader challenges in conservation. With limited resources and growing threats, efforts must intensify to protect these modern-day dinosaurs. 



As Rowles and Grover highlight, saving cassowaries means preserving the intricate web of life in Australia's rainforests. The extinction of this keystone species would signify a profound loss, not just for the ecosystem but for the planet's biodiversity.

Summing these estimates gives a total of around 78.48 billion births. Adjustments and more refined estimates, such as those from the PRB, typically result in a widely cited figure: approximately 108 billion people have lived, walked, and died on Earth since the dawn of humanity.

A recent study by researchers from the <a href="https://www.rpi.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute</a> suggests that our Milky Way experienced a major collision much more recently than previously thought.



This discovery challenges long-held beliefs and offers a fresh perspective on the Milky Way’s formation and evolution.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mystery-of-milky-way-s-collision">Mystery of Milky Way's collision</h2>



Scientists have believed for years that the Milky Way’s last significant merger happened between eight and eleven billion years ago. 



Known as the Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE) event, this collision was thought to have shaped much of the galaxy we see today.



However, new research reveals that a significant merger might have occurred just one to two billion years ago. <a href="https://youtu.be/rySJiLjXr2I" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">This recent collision</a> would place it well after the formation of Earth.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wrinkles-in-the-milky-way-due-to-collision">"Wrinkles" in the Milky Way due to collision</h2>



Researchers Heidi Jo Newberg and Tom Donlon spearheaded this study, focusing on the "wrinkles" in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/uma3-u1-faintest-star-system-found-orbiting-milky-way-galaxy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">our galaxy</a>. These wrinkles form when other galaxies smash into the Milky Way. 



“We get wrinklier as we age, but our work reveals that the opposite is true for the Milky Way. It’s a sort of cosmic Benjamin Button, getting less wrinkly over time,” noted Donlon.



By studying how these wrinkles dissipate, the team traced the timeline of the last big collision.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pinpointing-the-milky-way-s-last-merger">Pinpointing the Milky Way's last merger</h2>



The study's innovative approach used a semi-analytical model to relate the number of “caustics” (wrinkles in the phase-space distribution of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/newly-discovered-stars-milky-way-are-old-as-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a>) to the time since a merger event. 



Analyzing data from the Gaia space observatory, the researchers identified several caustics in the local stellar halo. They compared these findings with a state-of-the-art cosmological simulation, part of the FIRE-2 Latte suite, to determine the timeline of the collision.



“For the wrinkles of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stars-at-the-edge-of-our-milky-way-galaxy-travel-more-slowly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a> to be as obvious as they appear in Gaia data, they must have joined us no less than three billion years ago – at least five billion years later than was previously thought,” said Newberg.

The team introduced a novel metric called “causticality,” which measures the unevenness in the phase-space distribution of stars. 



A high causticality value indicates a more recent collision, where the stars have not yet fully phase-mixed. Comparing their observations with simulated data, the researchers found a match at a timeline roughly one to two billion years ago.



The widely accepted GSE scenario, suggesting a merger eight to eleven billion years ago, contrasts sharply with these new findings. 



The observed high causticality in the Gaia data points to a much more recent merger. This discrepancy raises questions about the previously understood formation history of our galaxy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limitations-and-challenges">Limitations and challenges</h2>



Despite the compelling evidence, the study acknowledges several limitations. One key challenge is the reliance on a single cosmological simulation, which may not capture all of the complexities of the Milky Way’s history.



Additionally, the observed data is limited to the local stellar halo within 16,000 light-years of the Sun. The phase-space distribution of stars at larger distances could potentially reveal a different picture.



Moreover, the up-sampling process used to increase the resolution of the simulated data could introduce biases or underestimations in the degree of phase-mixing.

If confirmed, these findings could significantly impact our understanding of the Milky Way’s formation and the role of mergers in shaping galaxies.

“Through this study, Doctors Newberg and Donlon have made a startling discovery about the history of the Milky Way galaxy,” noted Dr. Curt Breneman, dean of Rensselaer’s <a href="https://science.rpi.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Science</a>.

Alongside these familiar sights, a less visible but equally significant awakening occurs on the Greenland ice sheet. 



As the ice starts to melt, dark patches begin to appear, a phenomenon caused by blooming algae. These algae absorb sunlight, accelerating the ice melt and contributing to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/highest-points-of-greenland-are-now-affected-by-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-giant-viruses-on-ice">Giant viruses on ice</h2>



In this bleak scenario of global warming, a ray of hope shines through in the form of an unexpected ally: giant viruses.



Postdoctoral researcher Laura Perini and her team at the Department of Environmental Science at <a href="https://envs.au.dk/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aarhus University</a> have made a groundbreaking discovery.



Nestled within the icy expanse, where algae proliferate, giant viruses lie in wait. 



Unlike their microscopic counterparts, these viruses are formidable in size, comparable to bacteria, and could potentially serve as natural regulators of algae growth.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-giants-among-microbes">Giants among microbes</h2>



Giant viruses, first identified in 1981, defy the typical characteristics of their kin. Measuring about 2.5 micrometers, they are not just physically larger; their genomes are also expansive, containing millions of genetic letters.



This allows them a level of autonomy uncommon among <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-viruses-found-in-yellowstones-hot-springs-are-1-5-billion-years-old/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">viruses</a>, enabling them to replicate and transcribe DNA without a host's cellular machinery.



Such capabilities make them fascinating subjects of study and potentially crucial players in ecological balance.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-viruses-in-the-warming-world">Viruses in the warming world</h2>



This discovery on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shock-discovery-greenland-ice-sheet-is-teeming-with-microorganisms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland ice sheet</a> marks a significant first. "We analyzed samples from various forms of ice and found active giant viruses in areas dominated by pigmented microalgae," noted Perini.



This revelation sheds light on a vibrant, albeit microscopic, ecosystem that thrives in conditions previously thought to be barren.

The ecosystem includes bacteria, fungi, and protists - all centered around the algae, with giant viruses perhaps playing a pivotal role in moderating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/toxic-algal-blooms-will-become-more-frequent-off-the-u-s-west-coast/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">algal blooms</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-presence-of-mrna">Presence of mRNA</h2>



Despite their size, these viruses elude the naked eye and even conventional microscopes. 



"Our discovery was made by analyzing DNA from collected samples. We sifted through massive datasets to find markers indicative of giant viruses," said Perini.



The presence of mRNA, which decays rapidly unless actively produced by living organisms, further confirmed the activity of these viruses on the ice.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-uncertain-role-of-giant-viruses">Uncertain role of giant viruses</h2>



While the potential of these giant viruses to control algae and mitigate ice melt from global warming is promising, much remains unknown.



"Their exact hosts and mechanisms are still unclear. Some may target protists, others the algae directly," noted Perini. Her ongoing research aims to delve deeper into these interactions, with more findings expected to be published later in the year.

In the vast expanse of the cosmos, there is much more than meets the eye. For every kilogram of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visible-matter-dark-matter-evolved-together-big-bang/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">visible matter</a> in the universe, from the computer on your desk to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-galaxies-formed-from-the-earliest-elements-in-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">distant stars and galaxies</a>, there are 5 kilograms of invisible "dark matter" that permeate our surroundings. 



This enigmatic dark matter <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-may-reveal-the-origin-of-magnetic-fields/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evades direct observation</a> yet exerts its invisible pull on the visible objects around us.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stephen-hawking-and-primordial-black-holes">Stephen Hawking and primordial black holes</h2>



Fifty years ago, renowned physicist <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/stephenhawking" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stephen Hawking</a> proposed a fascinating idea about the nature of dark matter. He suggested that it might consist of a population of black holes that formed in the early stages of the universe, mere moments after the Big Bang. 



These "primordial" black holes would not have been the colossal entities we detect today, but rather microscopic regions of ultradense matter. 



According to Hawking's theory, these primordial black holes would have formed in the first quintillionth of a second <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visible-matter-dark-matter-evolved-together-big-bang/">following the</a><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visible-matter-dark-matter-evolved-together-big-bang/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> </a><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visible-matter-dark-matter-evolved-together-big-bang/">Big Bang</a>, collapsed, and scattered across the cosmos, influencing the surrounding space-time in ways that could explain the dark matter we observe today.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-super-charged-black-holes">Super-charged black holes</h2>



Now, physicists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (<a href="https://www.mit.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MIT</a>) have made a mind-bending discovery that sheds new light on Hawking's idea. 



David Kaiser, the Germeshausen Professor of the History of Science and professor of physics at MIT, and his graduate student Elba Alonso-Monsalve, found that the primordial process described by Hawking would have also produced some unexpected companions: even smaller black holes with unprecedented amounts of a nuclear-physics property known as "color charge."



These smallest, "super-charged" black holes would have been an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-does-not-exist-universe-27-billion-years-old-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">entirely new state</a> of matter, likely evaporating a fraction of a second after their formation. 



Despite their brief existence, they could have influenced a crucial cosmological transition: the time when the first <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strong-magnetic-fields-leave-marks-on-nuclear-matter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atomic nuclei</a> were forged.



"Even though these short-lived, exotic creatures are not around today, they could have affected cosmic history in ways that could show up in subtle signals today," explains Kaiser. "Within the idea that all dark matter could be <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/existence-of-dark-matter-confirmed-by-new-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">accounted for by black holes</a>, this gives us new things to look for."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ultradense-matter-in-the-early-universe">Ultradense matter in the early universe</h2>



Unlike the black holes we know and detect today, which are the product of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/star-collapse-black-hole-instead-of-supernova-vanish-from-sky/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stellar collapse</a>, primordial black holes are thought to have formed in a time before stars existed. 



In the early universe, before even the basic elements had formed, pockets of ultradense, primordial matter could have accumulated and collapsed to form microscopic black holes. 



These black holes could have been so dense as to squeeze the mass of an asteroid into a region as small as a single atom. 



The gravitational pull from these tiny, invisible objects scattered throughout the universe could explain the dark matter that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neutron-stars-may-hold-the-key-to-understanding-dark-matter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">we can't see today</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-very-fleeting-existence">Very fleeting existence</h2>



Kaiser and Alonso-Monsalve set out to investigate the composition of these primordial black holes. They looked at existing theories for the likely distribution of black hole masses as they were first forming in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cosmic-lighthouses-emanated-earliest-starlight-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early universe</a>.



"Our realization was, there's a direct correlation between when a primordial black hole forms and what mass it forms with," says Alonso-Monsalve. "And that window of time is absurdly early."



The researchers calculated that primordial black holes must have formed within the first quintillionth of a second <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/black-holes-shaped-the-universe-before-galaxies-existed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">following the Big Bang</a>. 



This brief flash of time would have produced "typical" microscopic black holes with masses ranging from an asteroid to an atom. 



It would have also yielded a small fraction of exponentially smaller black holes, with the mass of a rhino and a size much smaller than a single proton.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-quantum-chromodynamics-qcd">Understanding quantum chromodynamics (QCD)</h2>



To determine the composition of these primordial black holes, Kaiser and Alonso-Monsalve turned to studies exploring the composition of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-telescope-discovers-what-powered-the-reionization-of-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early universe</a>, specifically focusing on the theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). 



QCD describes how quarks and gluons, the fundamental building blocks of protons and neutrons, interact.



Immediately following the Big Bang, physicists estimate that the universe was an immensely hot plasma of quarks and gluons that quickly cooled and combined to produce protons and neutrons. 



The researchers found that within the first quintillionth of a second, the universe would still have been a soup of free <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gluons-quarks-and-mystery-what-makes-proton-spin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quarks and gluons</a> that had yet to combine. 



Any black holes forming during this time would have swallowed up these untethered particles, along with an exotic property known as "color charge" - a state of charge that only uncombined quarks and gluons carry.



"Once we figured out that these black holes form in a quark-gluon plasma, the most important thing we had to figure out was, how much color charge is contained in the blob of matter that will end up in a primordial black hole?" explains Alonso-Monsalve.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exotic-color-charge-properties">Exotic color charge properties</h2>



Using QCD theory, Kaiser and Alonso-Monsalve worked out the distribution of color charge that should have existed throughout the hot, early plasma. 



They then compared that to the size of a region that would collapse to form a black hole in the first quintillionth of a second.



Interestingly, they found that most typical black holes at the time wouldn't have contained much color charge, as they would have formed by absorbing a huge number of regions with a mix of charges, ultimately adding up to a "neutral" charge.



However, the smallest black holes would have been packed with color charge. In fact, they would have contained the maximum amount of any type of charge allowed for a black hole, according to the fundamental laws of physics. 



These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/black-holes-shaped-the-universe-before-galaxies-existed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">"extremal" black holes</a>, although hypothesized for decades, had never been linked to a realistic formation process in our universe until now.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-for-signs-in-the-form-of-imprints">Searching for signs in the form of imprints</h2>



The super-charged black holes would have quickly evaporated, but possibly only after the time when the first atomic nuclei began to form, around one second after the Big Bang. 



This would have given the extremal black holes ample time to disrupt the equilibrium conditions that would have prevailed when the first nuclei <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-black-holes-were-too-scarce-to-explain-the-unseen-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">began to form</a>.



"These objects might have left some exciting observational imprints," muses Alonso-Monsalve. "They could have changed the balance of this versus that, and that's the kind of thing that one can begin to wonder about."



Such disturbances could potentially affect how those earliest nuclei formed, in ways that might someday be observed by astronomers with future measurements. 



If such observations are made, they would point convincingly to primordial black holes as the root of all dark matter in the universe today.

Microscopic black holes may explain all dark matter in the universe

A team of researchers led by <a href="https://www.helmholtz-munich.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Helmholtz Munich</a> has recently explored the impact of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-fathers-diet-impacts-the-health-of-his-future-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paternal diet</a> on children's health, focusing on the influence of a father's diet before conception. 



The experts examined the role of special small RNA molecules in sperm, known as mitochondrial tRNA fragments (mt-tsRNAs), which are crucial for gene expression regulation.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-material-in-sperm">Genetic material in sperm</h2>



Fathers pass their genetic material to their unborn children, specifically through their sperm. Each sperm cell carries one set of 23 chromosomes, which includes genes that contribute to various traits and characteristics of the child.&nbsp;



This genetic information combines with the genetic material from the mother's egg, which also contains 23 chromosomes, to form a new set of 46 chromosomes in the child.&nbsp;



The combined genetic&nbsp; material influences everything from physical traits like eye color and height to genetic predispositions and certain health conditions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-impacts-of-a-father-s-diet-nbsp">Future impacts of a father's diet&nbsp;</h2>



The study utilized data from the <a href="https://home.uni-leipzig.de/lifechild/research-profile/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LIFE Child cohort</a>, which includes over 3,000 families. Analyses revealed that a father's body weight influences the weight and metabolic disease susceptibility of their children, independent of maternal weight, parental genetics, or environmental factors.



To confirm their findings, the team conducted experiments with mice fed a high-fat diet. This diet affected the animals' reproductive organs, including the epididymis, where sperm matures.&nbsp;



“Our study shows that sperm exposed to a high-fat diet in the mouse epididymis led to offspring with an increased tendency to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cavefish-may-provide-therapeutic-insights-for-metabolic-disorders/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolic diseases</a>,” said senior author Raffaele Teperino, head of the Environmental Epigenetics research group at Helmholtz. This indicates that a father's diet can have significant implications for his offspring's health.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifelong-effects-of-father-s-diet">Lifelong effects of father's diet</h2>



Further laboratory studies revealed that mt-tsRNAs from sperm influenced gene expression in early embryos. This supports the hypothesis that acquired traits can be transmitted epigenetically across generations.&nbsp;



“Our hypothesis that acquired phenotypes over the course of life, such as diabetes and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natural-sugar-sources-are-key-to-preventing-childhood-obesity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">obesity</a>, are transmitted via epigenetic mechanisms across generations, is reinforced by this study,” explained co-author Martin Hrabě de Angelis, Research Director at Helmholtz Munich.



“Our results suggest that preventive health care for men wishing to become fathers should receive more attention and that programs should be developed for this purpose, especially with regard to diet,” Teperino concluded.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-background-on-mt-tsrnas">Background on mt-tsRNAs</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mitochondria-cells-batteries-leaking-causes-inflammation-diseases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mitochondria</a> are often referred to as the powerhouses of the cell, containing their own DNA separate from the cell nucleus. Traditionally, it was believed that mitochondrial DNA (mt-DNA) is inherited only from mothers. 



However, recent research, including this study, shows that sperm carry fragments of mt-RNA into the egg during fertilization. These mt-tsRNAs play a significant role in epigenetics by regulating gene expression in the early embryo.&nbsp;



This means fathers have an indirect but important influence on the genetic imprinting of mitochondria and, consequently, on the energy metabolism of their children. This discovery highlights a new layer of complexity in how paternal factors can affect offspring health.



“Our study supports the importance of paternal health at conception for offspring metabolism; shows that mt-tRNAs are diet-induced and sperm-borne; and demonstrates, in a physiological setting, father-to-offspring transfer of sperm mitochondrial RNAs at fertilization,” wrote the study authors.&nbsp;

Nutrients and other dietary components consumed by the mother provide the foundational building blocks for the child's growth and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-mothers-stress-shapes-her-firstborn-daughters-development/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">development</a>. 



For example, essential nutrients like folic acid, iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids directly support the development of the fetal brain, bones, and vital organs.&nbsp;

Slugs and snails, in bustling urban environments, typically shy away from the hustle and bustle of city life. 



However, a recent study suggests these mollusks are unique exceptions, showing a surprising preference for the urban landscapes of Los Angeles. 



This intriguing behavior provides valuable insights into urban biodiversity and offers a roadmap for city planning and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/effective-conservation-efforts-key-to-saving-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation efforts</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-slugs-and-snails-among-city-s-diverse-inhabitants">Slugs and snails among city's diverse inhabitants</h2>



The study, conducted by researchers including Joseph Curti from the <a href="https://www.ucla.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Los Angeles</a>, utilized iNaturalist - a comprehensive database of species observations by both professional scientists and community scientists.



By analyzing the data, the researchers calculated an "urban tolerance score" for 512 terrestrial animal species native to Southern California.



These species were grouped into various categories such as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, butterflies, moths, spiders, bees, wasps, and notably, slugs and snails.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preference-for-developed-parts-of-the-city">Preference for developed parts of the city</h2>



The results revealed a clear trend: While the majority of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/native-species-in-the-eastern-mediterranean-are-vanishing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">native species</a> prefer less urbanized areas, slugs and snails are frequently found in more developed parts of the city. 



By contrast, butterflies and moths displayed the lowest tolerance for urban settings. Other groups, like mammals and reptiles, also showed a significant aversion to urban areas. 



Species like lady beetles, spiders, and birds were somewhat more adaptable, though they still generally favored less urbanized environments.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-enhancing-urban-biodiversity">Enhancing urban biodiversity</h2>



This research is pivotal for city planners aiming to enhance <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/small-greening-projects-can-dramatically-boost-urban-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">urban biodiversity</a>. For instance, the observed patterns of butterfly distribution can guide targeted conservation initiatives, such as efforts to protect the endangered Palos Verdes blue butterfly. 



Furthermore, the study establishes a baseline for evaluating the effectiveness of local biodiversity programs.



The use of crowd-sourced data, while not without its limitations - such as potential biases in species detection - proves to be a powerful tool in understanding and managing urban ecological communities. The data’s richness and accessibility make it an excellent resource for ongoing environmental efforts.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-urban-impact-on-native-species">Understanding urban impact on native species</h2>



In partnership with the city of Los Angeles, the researchers explored the distribution of native species, including slugs and snails, throughout the city. The team also investigated their relationship with urban intensity.



"We sought to understand how native species were distributed across the city and to describe their association with urban intensity," noted the study authors.



They found that, on average, native species are negatively affected by urban intensity, but areas with higher <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urbanization-is-a-threat-to-78-of-the-worlds-bird-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">urbanization</a> levels tended to harbor more urban-tolerant species.



The methodology developed for this study is set to be reevaluated regularly. This will help track and potentially enhance efforts to sustain and increase native species populations within urban settings, aligning ecological health with urban development.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-landscape-of-los-angeles">The landscape of Los Angeles </h2>



Slugs and snails in Los Angeles thrive in an environment that offers a mix of urban greenery, moisture, and shelter. The city's diverse landscape provides these mollusks with ideal living conditions, combining both natural and human-made elements.



Los Angeles is known for its sprawling urban areas interspersed with parks, gardens, and green spaces. These green pockets within the city offer a variety of plants, which provide food and moisture essential for slugs and snails. 



Residential gardens, especially those with lush vegetation and mulched soil, create perfect microhabitats for these creatures. They find shelter under leaves, rocks, and garden debris, which protect them from predators and harsh weather conditions.



Moreover, the city's irrigation systems and regular watering of lawns and gardens create moist environments that slugs and snails favor. 



Moisture is crucial for their survival as it helps them move and prevents their bodies from drying out. Urban structures such as walls, fences, and buildings also offer additional protection and shaded areas, making the urban landscape even more appealing.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-slugs-and-snails-in-the-city">Slugs and snails in the city</h2>



The unexpected preference of slugs and snails for urban areas highlights the complex nature of city ecosystems and the varying impacts of urbanization on different species.



By leveraging community-contributed data and rigorous scientific analysis, researchers and city planners can better understand these dynamics and work towards more biodiverse and resilient urban environments.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0295476" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PLoS ONE</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes a new map of Mars that is providing insight into the planet’s watery past. The map also reveals where future missions could safely land on Mars.&nbsp;



The map has been created over the last decade using observations of water-rich rocks and mineral deposits. The images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.



"A big surprise is the prevalence of these minerals, with the map revealing hundreds of thousands of water-affected locations in the oldest parts of the planet," says ESA. "The new data will help answer exciting questions about Mars’ climate history, whether water was globally persistent or confined to short, intense episodes, and whether the conditions were ever suitable for life."



"Specifically, the map shows the locations and abundances of aqueous minerals. These are from rocks that have been chemically altered by the action of water in the past, and have typically been transformed into clays and salts."



According to John Carter of the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), our collective understanding of Mars has been oversimplified. He explained that planetary scientists have tended to think that only a few types of clay minerals on Mars were created during its wet period, then as the water gradually dried up, salts were produced across the planet.



The new map shows that the composition of Mars is much more complicated than what we thought. For example, while many salts formed after Martian clays, there are some salts that are presumed to be older than some of the clays.&nbsp;



“The evolution from lots of water to no water is not as clear cut as we thought, the water didn’t just stop overnight. We see a huge diversity of geological contexts, so that no one process or simple timeline can explain the evolution of the mineralogy of Mars. That’s the first result of our study. The second is that if you exclude life processes on Earth, Mars exhibits a diversity of mineralogy in geological settings just as Earth does,” said Carter.

The experts found that the muscle metabolism of cavefish has been genetically reprogrammed over time. As a result, the animals have experienced major changes in their morphology and behavior. Despite these changes, however, the cavefish remain healthy and fit.



The research may provide new clues about the evolutionary consequences of prolonged physical inactivity in humans.&nbsp;



“It’s no surprise that people are moving less and less as technology has advanced,” said Rohner. “With cavefish, we have a unique system where we can study what might happen if people remained couch potatoes over very, very long periods of time.”

Rising sea levels pose one of the biggest societal threats associated with climate change. According to ESA, satellite altimeter missions such as Copernicus Sentinel-6 are essential in monitoring global and regional changes in sea level.



"Unbeknown to many, the island of Crete, Greece, plays an important role in the Copernicus satellite altimetry constellation and on an international stage," reports ESA.



"Satellite altimetry data have to be continuously monitored at the ESA’s Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration where different techniques have pioneered the use of transponders to provide the best measurements to validate satellite altimeters in space soon after launch."



Dr. Craig Donlon explains that, by understanding planet Earth through satellite measurements, we are able to find evidence of change.&nbsp;
