Every living organism relies on a genetic blueprint encoded in its DNA, yet the amount of DNA - or genome size - varies dramatically across the tree of life.&nbsp;



In animals alone, genome sizes range from the minuscule genome of Intoshia variabili, a marine parasite - which is about 200 times smaller than the human genome - to the massive genome of the marbled lungfish (Protopterus aethiopicus) - which is over 40 times larger than ours.&nbsp;



Plants exhibit a similar range, with the fork fern (Tmesipteris oblanceolata) setting the record with a genome size over 50 times larger than that of humans.



This diversity in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/genome-mapping-completed-for-dozens-of-common-animals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">genome</a> size reveals the vast variety of life forms on Earth, but it also raises a fascinating question: If smaller genomes lead to faster, more efficient growth, why do some species have larger genomes?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-advantages-of-smaller-genome-sizes">Advantages of smaller genome sizes</h2>



The replication of DNA is essential for cell production and growth, making smaller genomes more efficient as they require fewer resources and time to replicate.&nbsp;



Smaller genomes demand fewer <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/excess-nutrients-are-creating-ocean-dead-zones/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nutrients</a>, especially the DNA-building elements nitrogen and phosphorus, making them ideal for rapid growth and reproduction.



Because of these advantages, it’s not surprising that most species have evolved with relatively small genomes.&nbsp;



However, large genomes persist in some organisms, suggesting that these genomes may confer certain benefits in specific environments, where the costs of carrying extra DNA are outweighed by unique growth advantages.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploring-large-genome-benefits-in-grasses">Exploring large genome benefits in grasses</h2>



A research team led by the <a href="https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sheffield</a> has recently studied the potential benefits of large genomes in grass species. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fairy-circles-kill-all-newly-planted-grasses-deepening-their-mystery/">Grasses</a>, a vast plant family found worldwide from arctic tundras to tropical savannas, vary in genome size, making them an ideal group to examine how genome size affects growth in different conditions.



The study, published in the journal <a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/nph.20150" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New Phytologist</a>, examined the growth of various grass species under conditions mimicking their natural environments - high temperatures, low nutrients, and drought. 



The scientists compared growth rates to each species’ genome size and observed that while grasses with smaller genomes generally grew better across most conditions, larger genomes provided advantages in two specific scenarios.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-large-genomes-thrive-in-nutrient-rich-environments">Large genomes thrive in nutrient-rich environments</h2>



The first scenario where larger genomes proved beneficial was in nutrient-rich soils. While low nutrient levels slowed down large-genome grasses, those with large genomes thrived in high-nutrient environments.&nbsp;



Here, the extra DNA content meant larger cells that produced more biomass, such as leaves, which allowed these plants to outgrow and overshadow neighbors with smaller genomes.&nbsp;



In nutrient-poor areas, however, the demands of replicating additional DNA outweighed these benefits, making smaller genomes more favorable.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-seasons-and-genome-sizes">Growing seasons and genome sizes</h2>



The second advantage for large-genome grasses occurred in cooler environments, such as temperate regions with lower growing season temperatures.&nbsp;



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-plants-grow-more-branches-and-become-bushy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Plant growth</a> typically has two stages: cell division, where new cells are generated, and cell expansion, where cells swell with water to help the plant grow taller or spread. 



Cool temperatures significantly slow down cell division, but they have less impact on cell expansion.&nbsp;



Consequently, grasses with larger cells, which accompany large genomes, can expand more rapidly by cell enlargement even in cooler weather, outpacing smaller-genome plants that rely on faster cell division in warmer temperatures.



This cell expansion process explains the early spring growth of plants like daffodils and bluebells, which also have large genomes.&nbsp;



These plants perform much of their cell division in warmer months, allowing them to use cell expansion to grow quickly in early spring, well before smaller-genome plants begin to compete for light and nutrients.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genome-size-diversity">Genome size diversity</h2>



The diversity in genome sizes among grasses may be one reason for their global success, as it allows them to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions.&nbsp;



While smaller genomes typically support efficient growth, larger genomes offer unique advantages in specific environments, enabling certain species to thrive where others cannot.&nbsp;



This genetic diversity in grasses underscores the importance of variation in supporting species’ survival and adaptability across ecosystems.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genome-size-and-evolutionary-success">Genome size and evolutionary success</h2>



The relationship between genome size and survival is not limited to plants. Our own medium-sized genome has supported humanity’s adaptability, though we don’t face the same nutrient limitations as stationary plants.&nbsp;



Unlike grasses, humans can move to seek out food and resources, which may allow us to bear the metabolic costs associated with our DNA without significant limitation.&nbsp;



This mobility highlights how different species leverage their genetic make-up in conjunction with unique behaviors and environmental interactions to thrive across diverse habitats.

A series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) originating from sunspot Region 3664 are expected to merge and reach Earth by midday (UTC) on May 12, 2023, causing another large geomagnetic solar storm and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/auroras-southern-united-states-this-week-huge-solar-storm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">producing auroras</a> across the continental United States.



These CMEs, associated with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/noaa-issues-severe-geomagnetic-storm-watch-first-time-since-2005/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recent flare activity</a>, are likely to cause periods of <a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/noaa-scales-explanation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">G4-G5 (Severe-Extreme)</a> geomagnetic storms upon arrival. Watches at this level are considered very rare occurrences.

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-prepares-impact-three-cme-events-solar-storms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Region 3664</a> has been particularly active, producing two additional X-class flares in the past 12 hours, further contributing to the anticipated geomagnetic events.

On May 11, 2024, at 07:28 AM EDT (1128 UTC), extreme (G5) solar conditions were observed once again by the NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (<a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SWPC</a>). The geomagnetic storming, which <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/noaa-issues-severe-geomagnetic-storm-watch-first-time-since-2005/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">varies in intensity</a>, is expected to persist through at least Sunday. 



This latest event follows a series of strong solar flares and coronal mass ejections (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dr2BIlDGDk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CMEs</a>) that have been occurring since Wednesday.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Another strong solar flare detected</h2>



A powerful X5.4 magnitude solar flare was detected from sunspot cluster <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-prepares-impact-three-cme-events-solar-storms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NOAA region 3664</a>. 



Solar flares of this magnitude are relatively rare and are characterized by intense eruptions of energy from the Sun that typically last anywhere from minutes to hours. 



The flare reached its peak at 01:23 AM EDT on May 11, 2024.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Potential impact on high-frequency radio signals</h2>



Users of high-frequency (HF) radio signals may experience temporary degradation or complete loss of signal on much of the sunlit side of Earth due to the solar flare. 



The threat of additional strong flares and CMEs is expected to remain until the large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster (NOAA region 3664) rotates out of view over the next several days.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Power grid irregularities and communication disruptions</h2>



There have been reports of power grid irregularities and degradation to high-frequency communications and GPS. 



In response, NOAA has alerted operators of power plants and spacecraft in orbit, as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to take necessary precautions.



According to <a href="https://www.noaa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NOAA</a> scientist Rob Steenburgh, this storm poses a risk for high-voltage transmission lines for power grids, but not the electrical lines typically found in residential homes. 



Satellites could also be affected, potentially disrupting navigation and communication services on Earth.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Auroras visible across most of the United States</h2>



Weather permitting, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/auroras-southern-united-states-this-week-huge-solar-storm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">auroras should be visible again</a> tonight for most of the continental United States. 



Steenburgh and his colleagues suggest that phone cameras may provide the best aurora views, as they are better at capturing light than the naked eye. 



"That's really the gift from space weather: the aurora," Steenburgh noted.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">No serious threat to ISS astronauts</h2>



NASA has stated that the storm poses no serious threat to the seven astronauts aboard the International Space Station. 



The primary concern is the increased radiation levels, and if necessary, the crew could move to a better shielded part of the station, according to Steenburgh.



As the solar activity continues, scientists and authorities remain vigilant in monitoring the situation and providing updates to ensure the safety of critical infrastructure and the general public.

Another round of "Severe" and "Extreme" solar storms expected tonight and tomorrow

Malaria remains a devastating problem in Africa. It is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths each year. In the fight against this climate-sensitive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-infectious-disease-landscape-is-changing-and-we-must-prepare/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vector-borne disease</a>, experts have developed a novel model that could revolutionize how we predict and respond to malaria transmission. 



The research incorporates comprehensive climatic and hydrological models, marking a significant advancement over traditional methods which primarily relied on rainfall totals to gauge potential <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mosquito-borne-diseases-are-a-growing-threat-in-a-warming-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mosquito breeding</a> sites.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predictive-model-for-malaria">Predictive model for malaria</h2>



Traditionally, predicting malaria transmission involved estimating surface water presence from rainfall data. This method does not account for the complex behaviors of water, such as evaporation and river flow. 



However, the new study utilizes a variety of models to create a more detailed understanding of where conditions are ripe for malaria. 



"Changes in climate shift the geographic locations that are suitable for malaria transmission because of the thermal constraints on vector&nbsp;Anopheles&nbsp;mosquitos and&nbsp;Plasmodium&nbsp;spp. malaria parasites and the lack of availability of surface water for vector breeding," wrote the study authors. 



"Previous Africa-wide assessments have tended to solely represent surface water using precipitation, ignoring many important hydrological processes." 



"Here, we applied a validated and weighted ensemble of global hydrological and climate models to estimate present and future areas of hydroclimatic suitability for malaria transmission."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environments-that-foster-malaria">Environments that foster malaria </h2>



By factoring in real-world processes, the researchers have painted a clearer picture of the environments that foster malaria across the African continent.



For instance, the role of significant waterways like the Zambezi River has been brought to light, revealing that almost four times as many people live in high-risk malaria zones for up to nine months a year than previously estimated. 



This nuanced understanding of water dynamics and their effect on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-malaria-colder-areas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">malaria transmission</a> is a pivotal component of the study.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-malaria-control">Implications for malaria control </h2>



Dr. Mark Smith, an associate professor in Water Research at the <a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leeds</a> and the lead author of the study, emphasized the practical applications of these insights. 



"This will give us a more physically realistic estimate of where in Africa is going to become better or worse for malaria," explained Dr. Smith. 



With more precise data on water flows, interventions can be better prioritized and tailored - an invaluable advantage given the often limited health resources.



The study projects a net decrease in regions suitable for malaria transmission starting from 2025 due to hotter and drier conditions brought about by climate change. Consequently, this shift presents both challenges and opportunities for public health strategies.

The research has implications beyond malaria prevention. The team also explored how fluctuations in water availability could influence other significant health risks, such as dengue fever.



Professors Chris Thomas and Simon Gosling, contributors to the study, highlighted the enhanced capabilities of their models to track water movements beyond initial rainfall areas. This helps identify extended breeding grounds for malaria-carrying mosquitoes along significant river floodplains.



Professor Gosling highlighted the complex interplay of surface water flows and malaria risk, enhanced by a major global hydrological modeling initiative. 



"Although an overall reduction in future risk of malaria might sound like good news, it comes at a cost of reduced water availability and a greater risk of another significant disease, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-may-slow-the-spread-of-dengue-fever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dengue</a>," said Professor Gosling.

"We're getting to the point soon where we use globally available data to not only say where the possible habitats are but also which species of mosquitoes are likely to breed where, and that would allow people to really target their interventions against these insects."

By integrating sophisticated hydrological data, the researchers are paving the way for more effective and targeted malaria interventions, promising a new era of disease control on the continent.

"The false information generated by AI systems presents a growing societal challenge. One part of the problem is inaccurate AI systems, such as chatbots whose confabulations are often assumed to be truthful by unsuspecting users," wrote the researchers.



"Malicious actors pose another threat by generating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deepfake-detection-inauthentic-content-lacks-telltale-signs-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deepfake</a> images and videos to represent fictional occurrences as fact. However, neither confabulations nor deepfakes involve an AI systematically learning to manipulate other agents."



"In this paper, we focus on learned deception, a distinct source of false information from AI systems, which is much closer to explicit manipulation. We define deception as the systematic inducement of false beliefs in others, as a means to accomplish some outcome other than saying what is true." 



"For example, we will document cases where, instead of strictly pursuing the accuracy of outputs, AI systems try to win games, please users, or achieve other strategic goals."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-genesis-of-ai-deception">The genesis of AI deception </h2>



The study reveals that AI often resorts to deception as an effective strategy to excel in its assigned tasks. 



"AI developers do not have a confident understanding of what causes undesirable AI behaviors like deception," explained Peter S. Park, an AI existential safety postdoctoral fellow at <a href="https://web.mit.edu/">MIT</a>. “But generally speaking, we think AI deception arises because a deception-based strategy turned out to be the best way to perform well at the given AI’s training task. Deception helps them achieve their goals.”

Despite Meta's intentions for CICERO to remain honest, the study revealed that it often manipulated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/does-the-human-brain-outperform-artificial-intelligence/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human players</a> to gain advantages, contradicting its training directives.



Moreover, AI systems have displayed cunning behaviors in other arenas. From bluffing in Texas hold ‘em poker against seasoned players to simulating fake attacks in Starcraft II and skewing economic negotiations, these systems show a broad capacity for deceit.

Though these manipulations may initially appear trivial within game contexts, they possess the potential to foster significant advancements in AI deception techniques. "Breakthroughs in deceptive AI capabilities can lead us humans into a false sense of security," said Park, emphasizing the hidden dangers these technologies might harbor.

The ramifications of these deceptions are far-reaching, with potential impacts including fraud facilitation and election tampering. "Eventually, if these systems can refine this unsettling skill set, humans could lose control of them," said Parks.

As AI deception advances, the urgency for effective regulation becomes more pronounced. While recent initiatives like the EU AI Act and President Biden's AI Executive Order signify steps toward addressing these issues, the effectiveness of such measures remains uncertain. 



"We as a society need as much time as we can get to prepare for the more advanced deception of future AI products and open-source models," said Park.



"If banning AI deception is politically infeasible at the current moment, we recommend that deceptive AI systems be classified as high risk."

BSC is the upper layer of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-microbes-survive-the-desert-by-sleeping-through-the-dry-spells/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">desert soils</a>, teeming with microorganisms vital for the isopods' diet. 



The study focused on how isopods manage their intake of proteins, sugars, and particularly calcium, which is essential for building their exoskeletons.

The researchers found that desert isopods are adept at adjusting their diet to maintain an optimal balance of nutrients. They typically obtain most of their proteins and sugars from dry leaves, but turn to soil crust to meet their significant calcium needs.



Interestingly, a notable twist in the research involved adding artificial calcium sources to the leaf litter. While this approach fulfilled the isopods' calcium requirements, it unexpectedly led to stunted growth.



Additionally, further experiments used gamma-radiation to sterilize the soil crust, which preserved its nutritional content but eradicated the microorganisms. 



Isopods feeding on this sterilized crust displayed different growth patterns and lower assimilation efficiencies than those consuming live <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-organisms-manage-water-in-the-worlds-driest-places/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biological soil crust</a> (BSC).



These findings indicate that the live microorganisms within the BSC are essential for helping isopods efficiently digest the fibrous plant material.

Field observations and lab tests showed that contrary to expectations, isopods preferred the macronutrient-poor BSC over richer plant litter, consuming it three times as much. 



Even when the calcium intake was the same, isopods thrived better on natural BSC than on artificial diets. When consuming gamma-radiation sterilized BSC, the isopods increased their consumption but grew more slowly, further underscoring the importance of live microorganisms in their diet.



"Our findings underscore the complexity of dietary decision-making among desert isopods and highlight the importance of considering multifaceted factors in understanding trophic interactions," Dr. Zaguri highlighted.

This hidden reality has significant implications for our understanding of the problem and our ability to address it effectively.

The density of the plastic material itself plays a role, with denser plastics sinking more readily. The shape of the object also influences its buoyancy, as irregular shapes can trap air and temporarily prevent sinking. 



Additionally, the presence of biofilms can significantly alter the fate of plastic debris. Biofilms are complex communities of microorganisms that can colonize plastic surfaces, increasing their weight and causing them to sink. 



Once submerged, these plastics can interact with the benthic environment, potentially impacting sediment composition, oxygen levels, and the organisms inhabiting the riverbed. 



Furthermore, submerged plastics can leach harmful chemicals into the water, further compromising water quality and ecological balance.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-pollution-in-rivers">Plastic pollution in rivers</h2>



A study led by James Lofty, a Ph.D. researcher at Cardiff University's <a href="https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/engineering" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Engineering</a>, has shed new light on the behavior of sinking plastics in rivers. 



Lofty and his team conducted a series of experiments in which they released over 3,000 plastic items into large water channels designed to simulate real-world river conditions.



Using high-resolution cameras, they tracked the movement of these plastics, uncovering surprising findings. Contrary to previous assumptions, plastic fragments don't always sink in a uniform manner. 



Their orientation can change as they descend, significantly impacting their sinking speed and ultimately their distribution within the river.

"However, we've shown this is not the case for plastics which are fragmented and fractured. This is important, as the sinking rate of a plastic particle is essential for understanding its transport. This finding significantly changes our understanding of how plastics move in rivers," Lofty continued.

This model offers a valuable tool for assessing the extent of plastic pollution in aquatic environments and informing targeted mitigation strategies. "Our method can be used in any river on account of it using this very well-known equation also used for sediments," noted Mr. Lofty.



This innovative approach overcomes the limitations of previous methods, such as underwater cameras and sonar, which are impractical for widespread use in rivers.

CsoSCA creates a high concentration of carbon dioxide within the carboxysome, while Rubisco eagerly gobbles it up, transforming it into sugars that the cell uses for energy.

"Just like you need bread to make a sandwich, the rate of turning <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-oxygen-boring-billion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon</a> dioxide into sugar depends on how fast RuBP is supplied," he concluded.

The sharp increase in wildfires is particularly alarming as it predominantly affects untouched, old-growth forests. These areas have historically been spared from such extensive destruction. This represents a significant and worrying shift in the ecological balance of the region. Such changes threaten the stability and health of these critical ecosystems, which have long been preserved.



A comprehensive study, utilizing detailed satellite imagery analysis, revealed a staggering increase in forest wildfires from 13,477 in 2022 to 34,012 in 2023. This dramatic surge is primarily attributed to the prolonged drought conditions plaguing the region, highlighting the interconnectedness of environmental factors and the need for comprehensive strategies to mitigate the complex interplay of deforestation, drought, and fire. 



The escalating frequency and intensity of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfire-on-warming-planet-requires-adaptive-capacity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildfires</a> not only threaten the Amazon's biodiversity and carbon storage capacity but also jeopardize the livelihoods of local communities and indigenous populations who depend on the forest for their sustenance and cultural heritage.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-drought-and-the-domino-effect">Drought and the domino effect</h2>



The Amazon region has been grappling with increasingly frequent and prolonged dry spells. Past droughts in 2010 and 2015-16 had already left the forest more susceptible to fire, causing fragmentation of the plant cover. The ongoing drought, which began last year, has only exacerbated this vulnerability.



"Climate change is a key driver of the increase in forest fires, and El Niño has also added risk owing to its links with the prolonged drought in the region," noted IBAMA/PREVFOGO, the National Center for Forest Fire Fighting and Prevention.



The first three months of 2023 alone witnessed 7,861 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfires-in-siberia-are-a-growing-global-threat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildfires</a> in the Amazon, surpassing the figures for any of the previous eight years. This disturbing trend highlights the urgency of the situation.

The geographical distribution of these fires is a critical factor in understanding their impact and devising appropriate responses. 



“It’s important to understand the geographic pattern of these fires. Each of the areas concerned requires a different response. Our analysis pointed to more fires in old-growth forest areas than in previous years, which is alarming not just because of the loss of vegetation, which is invariably followed by deforestation, but also because the carbon stored by the forest becomes carbon emissions when it burns,” said&nbsp;<a href="https://bv.fapesp.br/en/pesquisador/708951/guilherme-augusto-verola-mataveli" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Guilherme Augusto Verola Mataveli</a>, corresponding author of the article and a remote sensing specialist with INPE’s Earth Observation and Geoinformatics Division.



The research highlights a worrisome trend of increased fire activity within the Amazon's old-growth forests. These ancient, untouched ecosystems are particularly susceptible to the detrimental impacts of wildfires due to their significant carbon storage capacity. 



When forests in the Amazon burn, they release large amounts of stored carbon into the atmosphere. This release significantly contributes to the climate crisis by increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The frequent occurrence of these wildfires poses a serious threat to the Amazon's unique biodiversity and ecological balance. Additionally, it exacerbates the global challenge of addressing and mitigating the effects of climate change.



"Old-growth forest stores larger amounts of carbon, which becomes greenhouse gas emissions when it burns, contributing to climate change," said Mataveli. "Another negative effect relates to public health problems. In October 2023, Manaus [the capital of Amazonas state] had the worst air quality of any city in the world bar one."

Furthermore, the escalating threat of wildfires poses challenges for traditional subsistence farmers who rely on controlled burns as a land management practice. The uncontrolled spread of fire disrupts their livelihoods and threatens their way of life.

 "The Amazon is becoming more vulnerable environmentally, socially and economically as time passes without effective solutions to the fire problem," said Luiz Aragão, the leader of the research group.



As the Amazon burns, the fate of this invaluable ecosystem hangs in the balance, and the consequences of inaction are too dire to contemplate. The time to act is now, before the flames consume the very lungs of our planet.

One of the most enduring puzzles in solar science is the extraordinary temperature of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/suns-energy-impacts-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sun</a>'s corona,&nbsp;its outer atmosphere.&nbsp;While the sun's visible surface,&nbsp;the photosphere,&nbsp;has a temperature of approximately 9,931 degrees Fahrenheit,&nbsp;the corona can reach temperatures exceeding 1.8 million degrees Fahrenheit.&nbsp;This extreme temperature discrepancy has baffled scientists for decades.



The Solar Orbiter is a collaborative mission between the European Space Agency (<a href="https://www.esa.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a>) and <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>. It features a variety of scientific instruments that were built to study the sun's atmosphere and heating processes. 



The instruments include telescopes, spectrometers, and particle detectors. Together, they offer detailed observations of the solar corona and solar wind interactions.

The video reveals hair-like structures made of charged gas, known as plasma. These structures follow magnetic field lines that originate from deep within the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-sunspot-archipelago-15-times-wider-than-earth-spotted-by-nasa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sun</a>. Also visible are bright, hot regions where temperatures reach 1.8 million degrees Fahrenheit. Alongside these are darker, cooler areas where material absorbs radiation.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-features-of-the-sun">Hidden features of the sun</h2>



The video captured by the Solar Orbiter and meticulously annotated by scientists provides a rare and fascinating glimpse into the sun's intricate features, which are typically hidden from view at greater distances.

Moreover, the footage documents a significant event on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-sun-may-be-the-original-source-of-earths-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sun</a> — an eruption so large it's comparable in size to Earth itself. The dramatic phenomenon is followed by what is known as "coronal rain." This process involves the cooling of plasma after the eruption, which then falls back towards the sun's surface. 



This cycle of heating and cooling is not only mesmerizing to observe but also provides critical insights into the mechanisms of solar activity, illustrating the sun's ability to influence its surroundings through such powerful events.

Black holes are some of the most mysterious and powerful objects in the universe. They grow larger as they devour basically everything they encounter, including dust, stars, planets, and even other black holes. However, a new study reveals that black holes have different diets and eating habits. 



Some black holes are messy eaters, gobbling up huge chunks of matter at once, causing bright outbursts of light. Others are much more refined diners, consuming their diet in a slow and steady stream, barely causing a ripple in the cosmic pond.



Scientists have been trying to understand these differences for years.&nbsp;Now,&nbsp;thanks to data from NASA's retired <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/spitzer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Spitzer Space Telescope</a>,&nbsp;they may have uncovered the secret to how some black holes,&nbsp;like the one at the center of our neighboring galaxy Andromeda,&nbsp;maintain their picky eating habits.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-hole-s-diet-via-dust-streams">Black hole's diet via dust streams</h2>



Researchers employed the infrared imaging technology of the Spitzer Space Telescope to examine the core of the Andromeda galaxy. This investigation revealed extensive dust streams that extend for thousands of light-years, directing towards the supermassive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/colossal-black-hole-found-in-our-galaxy-is-33-times-the-suns-mass/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black hole</a> at the galaxy's center. 



These observations of dust movements are crucial as they help explain the processes by which the black hole continuously feeds on incoming material in a steady, subdued manner.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-hole-buffet">Black hole buffet</h2>



When a black hole consumes a substantial amount of matter, such as a star or a gas cloud, the interaction is visually dramatic. The immense gravitational pull of the black hole rapidly heats this material to extremely high temperatures as it approaches the event horizon - the boundary beyond which nothing can escape. 



As the material accelerates and heats up, it emits a vast amount of radiation across various wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. This emission can be so intense that it sometimes outshines the collective light of an entire galaxy, creating what is known as a quasar or an active galactic nucleus.



However, the supermassive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/powerful-magnetic-fields-may-be-key-features-of-black-holes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black holes</a> located at the centers of the Milky Way and Andromeda exhibit much quieter behavior. Unlike more active black holes, these do not display the same dramatic flares of brightness. 



The light emitted from these black holes is notably faint and remains consistent over time. This suggests that they are not engaging in the sporadic consumption of large masses. Instead, they appear to be steadily accreting smaller quantities of material. 



This method of consumption is less disruptive and does not lead to the same level of radiant outburst, hence their categorization as some of the quietest eaters in the universe. Their feeding process, characterized by the ingestion of smaller, more consistent streams of matter, contrasts sharply with the more violent and episodic feeding habits seen in other galactic centers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-secret-ingredient-in-black-hole-s-diet">Secret ingredient in black hole's diet</h2>



A <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-4357/ace2c3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> published earlier this year proposed a theory to explain this. The researchers suggested that these quiet black holes have a diet that consists of a continuous stream of gas and dust. 



They used computer simulations to model how gas and dust would behave near a supermassive black hole.&nbsp;The simulations showed that a steady flow of material could form a swirling disk around the black hole,&nbsp;providing a constant source of nourishment.



This theory,&nbsp;however,&nbsp;comes with a twist.&nbsp;The streams feeding the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-black-holes-and-quasars-grew-faster-than-their-galaxies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black hole</a> can't be too big or too small.&nbsp;If they're too large,&nbsp;they could break apart and fall into the black hole in unpredictable clumps,&nbsp;causing those messy outbursts of light. But if they're too small,&nbsp;the black hole wouldn't get enough to eat and would start to shrink.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spitzer-to-the-rescue">Spitzer to the rescue</h2>



The researchers compared their simulations to actual observations from Spitzer and its cousin,&nbsp;the Hubble Space Telescope.&nbsp;They found dusty spirals in Andromeda that matched the predicted size and flow rate needed to feed a quiet black hole.&nbsp;



These dusty tendrils could be the black hole's personal buffet line,&nbsp;constantly replenished to satisfy its insatiable appetite. "This is a great example of scientists reexamining old data to reveal new insights," said Almudena Prieto,&nbsp;an astrophysicist involved in the study.&nbsp;"We have 20-year-old data telling us things we didn't recognize when we first collected it."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deeper-look-into-andromeda">Deeper look into Andromeda</h2>



Launched in 2003,&nbsp;Spitzer was a marvel of engineering.&nbsp;It was specifically designed to see the universe in infrared light, which is invisible to our eyes.&nbsp;Different infrared wavelengths reveal different features of celestial objects.&nbsp;Hot,&nbsp;glowing objects like stars show up brightly in certain wavelengths,&nbsp;while cooler objects like dust clouds appear in others.



By separating these wavelengths, astronomers can essentially peel back the layers of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ceers-2112-ancient-galaxy-looks-strikingly-similar-to-ours/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy</a>, revealing its hidden structure. In the case of Andromeda, this revealed a surprising view of the black hole's vital diet. 



Unlike our Milky Way,&nbsp;which has distinct spiral arms,&nbsp;Andromeda is dominated by a large ring of dust.&nbsp;This ring also has a curious gap,&nbsp;likely caused by a smaller galaxy that wandered a little too close.



Andromeda's proximity to Earth makes it a prime target for astronomical study. It's the closest large galaxy to our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-amount-of-dark-matter-may-be-missing-from-the-milky-way/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Milky Way</a>, and with the naked eye, it would appear six times wider than the Moon. Even with a powerful telescope like Spitzer, capturing a detailed image of Andromeda required a whopping 11,000 separate snapshots.

Black holes have different diets - and some are picky eaters

Black holes are some of the most mysterious and powerful...

Over 80 million Americans battle the effects of allergies caused by airborne pollen. That's the size of Germany's population sneezing and sniffling as these tiny particles wreak havoc on our immune systems. 



The financial toll is even more staggering, exceeding $3 billion annually, with nearly half linked to prescription medication. Pollen isn't just an annoyance, it's a financial burden too.



But what if pollen is more than just an allergy trigger? Emerging research from NOAA's Global Systems Laboratory (<a href="https://gsl.noaa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GSL</a>) has unearthed a fascinating connection: pollen can actually influence the weather.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pollen-forecasting">Pollen forecasting</h2>



Imagine a world where pollen forecasts are as commonplace as weather forecasts, a world where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pollen-allergies-will-be-intensified-by-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">allergy</a> sufferers can plan their days around pollen levels just as they might on high ozone days. This vision is becoming a reality thanks to an experimental model developed by GSL.



This cutting-edge model, operational since summer 2022, is the first of its kind in the U.S., offering real-time predictions of both the impact of weather on pollen concentrations and the inverse – how pollen loads influence the weather.



"Pollen and its associated allergies are important components to people's everyday lives," said CIRES scientist Jordan Schnell, working at GSL. "With real-time predictions of pollen and where it is transported, people can adjust their outdoor activities, medications and take precautions to ensure their well-being."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rap-chem-weather-model">RAP-Chem weather model </h2>



This pollen prediction module is a key component of the Rapid-Refresh Chemistry (<a href="https://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/RAPchem/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RAP-Chem</a>) system, an advanced forecasting tool developed by NOAA. RAP-Chem represents a new generation of weather and air quality models, designed to provide detailed forecasts for a variety of atmospheric conditions. 



Each day, RAP-Chem produces a forecast spanning 48 hours, covering a range of air quality parameters including the concentration and dispersion of ozone, smoke, dust, and crucially, pollen. This integration allows for a comprehensive understanding of how pollen interacts with other atmospheric elements, providing valuable insights for both allergy sufferers and meteorologists alike.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pollen-and-weather">Pollen and weather</h2>



RAP-Chem's analysis demonstrates the intricate relationship between pollen and meteorological conditions. Wind patterns significantly influence the daily fluctuation of pollen levels in the atmosphere. During daylight hours, winds facilitate the release and dispersal of pollen from plants, leading to elevated concentrations in the air. Conversely, as winds subside at night, pollen tends to settle back onto the ground, resulting in decreased airborne levels.



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spring-rainfall-is-an-unexpected-source-of-pollen/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rainfall</a> acts as a natural cleansing mechanism, washing pollen out of the air and reducing its concentration. However, thunderstorms introduce a complex dynamic. While rain generally lowers pollen levels, the cold downdrafts associated with thunderstorms can concentrate pollen particles near the ground. This localized increase in pollen concentration can exacerbate allergy symptoms for individuals in those areas.



Humidity and lightning also contribute to the complexity of pollen behavior. High humidity can cause pollen grains to rupture into smaller fragments, making them easier to inhale and potentially increasing their allergenic impact. Similarly, lightning discharges can fracture pollen grains, altering their size and distribution in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plant-pollen-may-help-clouds-form-impacting-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmosphere</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pollen-a-weather-influencer">Pollen: A weather influencer</h2>



A unique aspect of RAP-Chem is its ability to go beyond examining the influence of weather conditions on pollen concentrations. The model also investigates the reciprocal relationship, exploring how pollen, similar to other airborne particles like dust and smoke, can actively modify weather patterns. 



These microscopic particles interact with sunlight, scattering its rays and potentially influencing the amount of solar radiation that reaches the Earth's surface. Additionally, pollen particles can act as condensation nuclei, facilitating the formation of clouds. 



Consequently, the presence and concentration of pollen in the atmosphere can impact various meteorological factors, including temperature fluctuations, visibility, and the occurrence and intensity of precipitation.



"Pollen grains, like other suspended particles, can scatter sunlight, serve as seeds to form clouds, and affect temperature, visibility and precipitation," explained the GSL team.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-forecasting">Future forecasting</h2>



The research doesn't stop there. NOAA is working with the CDC and other health groups. They're examining if RAP-Chem's pollen forecasts match up with more allergy clinic visits. 



The implications of this research are profound. Accurate pollen forecasts could revolutionize allergy management, allowing individuals to proactively plan their activities and medication use. It's a testament to the interconnectedness of our world, where even the tiniest particles can influence something as vast as the weather.



"With real-time predictions of pollen and where it is transported, people can adjust their outdoor activities, medications and take precautions to ensure their well-being," noted Jordan Schnell.

Today, as the storms began striking Earth, the forecast predicts that auroras could be visible as far south as Florida and Texas in the southeast and as low as southern California on the west coast.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-flares-and-auroras">Solar flares and auroras</h2>



Observers have witnessed severe (G4) geomagnetic storm conditions today. Several additional Earth-directed Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are in transit to Earth's outer atmosphere, making it highly likely that geomagnetic storming will persist for several days.



The CMEs are associated with a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster, known as NOAA <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-prepares-impact-three-cme-events-solar-storms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">region 3664</a>, which continues to grow and now spans an impressive 17 times the diameter of Earth. Several strong flares have been detected in this region, contributing to the heightened alert level.



Shawn Dahl, a service coordinator at the SWPC in Boulder, Colorado, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, "We have a rare event on our hands."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-aurora-borealis">Understanding the aurora borealis</h2>



The northern lights, or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-solar-wind-which-creates-beautiful-auroras-on-earth-is-now-less-mysterious/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aurora borealis</a>, are created when charged particles ejected from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sun-covered-with-moss-peculiar-structure-sunspot-groups/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the sun</a> during solar storms collide with Earth's magnetic field. 



These energetic particles interact with atoms and molecules in the planet's upper atmosphere, resulting in the mesmerizing, colorful displays we observe in the night sky. 



While typically seen at high latitudes, intense periods of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/team-creates-video-showing-the-sun-in-gamma-rays-over-a-14-year-period/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar activity</a> can cause the auroras to be visible much farther south than usual.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-viewing-the-northern-lights">Viewing the northern lights</h2>



The SWPC's aurora dashboard provides short-term forecasts for those hoping to catch a glimpse of the northern lights. For the best viewing experience, find a dark location far from city lights on a clear night.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-impacts-of-severe-solar-storms">Potential impacts of severe solar storms</h2>



While amplified northern lights displays are a breathtaking sight, severe solar storms can also have disruptive effects on Earth. 



Coronal mass ejections, the clouds of plasma and charged particles unleashed by solar flares, have the power to disrupt communications and power grids on Earth and interfere with satellites in space when directed at our planet. 



The SWPC has notified operators of these systems to take protective action in anticipation of the incoming solar activity.

<li>Induced Currents: Power system voltage irregularities and false alarms on some protection devices.</li>



<li>Spacecraft: Surface charging and increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites, potentially causing orientation problems.</li>



<li>Navigation: Intermittent satellite navigation (GPS) problems, including loss-of-lock and increased range error.</li>



<li>Radio: Intermittent HF (high frequency) radio communication.</li>



<li>Aurora: Northern lights may be seen as low as Florida and Texas in the southern states, down to Missouri in the Midwest, and down to Southern California on the west coast.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increased-solar-activity-expected">Increased solar activity expected</h2>



The sun's activity follows an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/solar-storms-will-intensify-then-slow-as-the-solar-cycle-peaks-in-early-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">11-year cycle</a>, alternating between periods of minimum and maximum activity. The current cycle, which began in late 2019, is predicted to reach its peak in July 2025, according to NOAA and NASA forecasts. 



As we approach this peak, we can expect more frequent and intense solar events, potentially leading to more opportunities to witness the awe-inspiring northern lights.



With several moderate to strong solar flares detected since Wednesday morning and at least five flares and their associated coronal mass ejections apparently directed at Earth, the SWPC warns that geomagnetic storm conditions could persist through the weekend.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes a new map of Mars that is providing insight into the planet’s watery past. The map also reveals where future missions could safely land on Mars.&nbsp;



The map has been created over the last decade using observations of water-rich rocks and mineral deposits. The images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.



"A big surprise is the prevalence of these minerals, with the map revealing hundreds of thousands of water-affected locations in the oldest parts of the planet," says ESA. "The new data will help answer exciting questions about Mars’ climate history, whether water was globally persistent or confined to short, intense episodes, and whether the conditions were ever suitable for life."



"Specifically, the map shows the locations and abundances of aqueous minerals. These are from rocks that have been chemically altered by the action of water in the past, and have typically been transformed into clays and salts."



According to John Carter of the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), our collective understanding of Mars has been oversimplified. He explained that planetary scientists have tended to think that only a few types of clay minerals on Mars were created during its wet period, then as the water gradually dried up, salts were produced across the planet.



The new map shows that the composition of Mars is much more complicated than what we thought. For example, while many salts formed after Martian clays, there are some salts that are presumed to be older than some of the clays.&nbsp;



“The evolution from lots of water to no water is not as clear cut as we thought, the water didn’t just stop overnight. We see a huge diversity of geological contexts, so that no one process or simple timeline can explain the evolution of the mineralogy of Mars. That’s the first result of our study. The second is that if you exclude life processes on Earth, Mars exhibits a diversity of mineralogy in geological settings just as Earth does,” said Carter.

The experts found that the muscle metabolism of cavefish has been genetically reprogrammed over time. As a result, the animals have experienced major changes in their morphology and behavior. Despite these changes, however, the cavefish remain healthy and fit.



The research may provide new clues about the evolutionary consequences of prolonged physical inactivity in humans.&nbsp;



“It’s no surprise that people are moving less and less as technology has advanced,” said Rohner. “With cavefish, we have a unique system where we can study what might happen if people remained couch potatoes over very, very long periods of time.”

"Unbeknown to many, the island of Crete, Greece, plays an important role in the Copernicus satellite altimetry constellation and on an international stage," reports ESA.



"Satellite altimetry data have to be continuously monitored at the ESA’s Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration where different techniques have pioneered the use of transponders to provide the best measurements to validate satellite altimeters in space soon after launch."



Dr. Craig Donlon explains that, by understanding planet Earth through satellite measurements, we are able to find evidence of change.&nbsp;
