An artificial intelligence (AI) tool has been developed to predict the habitat of endangered whales, helping to reduce deadly ship strikes and promote responsible ocean development. The tool was designed by researchers at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.



By analyzing vast datasets, the AI model improves existing monitoring techniques, offering a more precise way to track the movements of the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale.



This species has been listed as endangered under the <a href="https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/topic/laws-policies/endangered-species-act" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Endangered Species Act</a> since 1970. Currently, the whales have an estimated population of only 370 individuals, including around 70 reproductively active females, according to the <a href="https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species/north-atlantic-right-whale" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a> (NOAA).



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-whale-movements-with-ai">Mapping whale movements with AI</h2>



The project was led by Ahmed Aziz Ezzat, an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at <a href="https://newbrunswick.rutgers.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rutgers</a>’ School of Engineering.&nbsp;



Ezzat collaborated with Josh Kohut, a Rutgers professor of marine sciences, and doctoral student Jiaxiang Ji, who is the study’s first author.



Professor Kohut likened the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-helps-humans-have-20-minute-conversation-with-humpback-whale-named-twain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI</a> model’s function to tracking human movement patterns in a household, where factors like food in the kitchen or a television in the den influence where people gather at specific times.



“With this program, we’re correlating the position of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-whales-use-songs-to-hide-from-predators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whale</a> in the ocean with environmental conditions,” Kohut explained. “This allows us to become much more informed on decision making about where the whales might be.”



“We can predict the time and location that represents a higher probability for whales to be around. This will enable us to implement different mitigation strategies to protect them.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valuable-tools-for-the-blue-economy">Valuable tools for the blue economy</h2>



The researchers initially aimed to create high-resolution habitat models to support <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/offshore-wind-farms-threaten-electric-sensitive-sharks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">offshore wind farm</a> development. However, their findings have broader implications, prompting them to publicly share additional details as part of their study.



“These tools are valuable and would solidly benefit anyone engaged in the blue economy - including fishing, shipping and developing alternative forms of energy sustainably,” said Ezzat.&nbsp;



“This approach can support a wise and environmentally responsible use of these waters so that we achieve our economic objectives, and at the same time make sure that we cause minimal to no harm to the environmental habitat of these creatures.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-ai-enhances-whale-tracking">How AI enhances whale tracking</h2>



Unlike traditional programs that operate on fixed instructions, the machine-learning model used in this study analyzed massive datasets to detect patterns and refine its predictions over time.



“The outcome of the machine-learning model is basically a prediction of where and when you will have a higher likelihood of encountering a marine mammal,” Ezzat said, describing it as a “probability map.”



The model integrated data from the <a href="https://rucool.marine.rutgers.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership</a>, which has been gathering whale detection and oceanographic data since 1992. The analysis also incorporated satellite data from the <a href="https://www.udel.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Delaware</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-leveraging-ocean-data-for-conservation">Leveraging ocean data for conservation</h2>



To build an accurate predictive tool, the researchers used two primary sources of oceanographic data: autonomous underwater gliders and satellite-based measurements.



Underwater gliders, torpedo-shaped robotic vessels, collect real-time information on seawater temperature, salinity, currents, and chlorophyll levels. They also use sonar to assess fish populations and record whale vocalizations, allowing researchers to pinpoint their locations.



Meanwhile, satellite data provides broader environmental context, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-are-substantially-changing-the-seasons-of-the-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea surface temperature</a>, water color, and oceanic fronts—factors that influence whale distribution.



“We’ve had the data but, until now, we’ve not been able to put the two sets – those detections of where the whales are, and what the environment is like at those places - together,” Kohut said. “This is a demonstration of the power of employing AI methodologies to advance our ability to predict or estimate where these whales are.”

By harnessing AI to integrate decades of environmental and whale tracking data, the Rutgers team has developed a powerful tool to improve conservation efforts, mitigate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-new-approach-to-protecting-whales-from-ship-strikes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ship collisions</a>, and support sustainable ocean development.&nbsp;



As human activities increasingly intersect with marine ecosystems, this AI-driven approach provides a critical step toward protecting North Atlantic right whales and ensuring responsible management of ocean resources.



The study was published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41598-024-80084-z" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Scientific Reports</a>.

Two years ago on my birthday, I was surprised by sighting a Burrowing Owl while on a hike.  The owl goggled at me with comically large eyes, keeping her distance.  I watched as the owl perched on an incredibly thin Yucca stalk, a testament to the light build of birds.  Prairie Dogs were everywhere, screaming their dramatic alarm call at my girlfriend Erin and me as we stopped to watch the owls.  

I couldn’t help think this is what so much of the U.S. once looked like: a sea of grass inhabited by an abundance of almost secret, private wildlife.  These ecosystems sustained not only owls and Prairie Dogs but historically wolves, bears, bison, elk, deer, pronghorn antelope.  Snakes take advantage of prairie dog burrows just like the mis-named Burrowing Owls.  Indeed the baby owls make a sound reminiscent of a rattlesnake to discourage unwanted intruders into their subterranean homes.  The animals living on the prairie in turn supported Native American cultures focused on migrating with game animals, living in tipis and covering enormous distances on foot for food and shelter.  

The Black Footed Ferret is a common symbol of endangered prairie as well as American wildlife, followed closely by Burrowing Owls in apparent popularity.  Both of these animals depend entirely on the survival of the much maligned Prairie Dog.  

Prairie dogs in many states can be shot on sight for no reason and without license.  Growing up in Wyoming and Colorado I’ve heard many people joke casually about massacring entire colonies of the mammal, just for fun.  Apparently some people have such little empathy that plugging away at hundreds of small rodents from a distance with a scope passes as entertainment.  

When I think of the senseless slaughter, I am reminded of the hide hunters who nearly wiped out the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/national-parks-trump-ghost-teddy-roosevelt/">American Buffalo</a> (Bison bison) but then again, at least hide hunters were making money.  As killing bison devastated the Native Americans, bringing proud people to their knees before a ruthless American government, so killing Prairie Dogs devastates entire ecosystems.  Foxes, coyotes, raptors, owls (as mentioned), other raptors, even grasses all are benefited by the humble Prairie Dog. 

The prairie as an environment has failed to capture the cultural imagination like the mountains, the ocean or even the desert yet it is amazing.  I’ve watched as thousands of Sandhill Cranes fly over a prairie river valley.  I’ve howled back at singing coyotes and watched them move silently through the grass.  After a long day at a dinosaur dig, I watched a doe deer moving delicately across the prairie; an embodiment of grace.  

As a keystone species of perhaps the most American of ecosystems, prairie dogs should be revered, not treated as target practice.  If we’re serious about protecting the Black Footed Ferret or Burrowing Owls or grasslands or even Bison, we must protect first the Prairie Dog.

Why the Prairie Dog is a true underdog

Two years ago on my birthday, I was surprised by...

A remarkable find off the coast of Tasmania has more than doubled the known population of an incredibly rare species of red handfish known as Thynnichthys politus. 

First tipped off by a member of the public, seven divers from the <a href="http://www.imas.utas.edu.au/">Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS)</a> went in search of the red handfish, which was thought to only exist near a reef in Frederick Henry Bay near Southeast Tasmania. 

The divers discovered several individual new handfish not previously accounted for near the reef at two different sites, which led the team to believe that there were 20 to 40 more fish in the species than thought, double the current population. 

It was almost a lost cause for the diving team, as their search mission using GPS coordinates handed down from someone else yielded no results at first.

“We were diving for approximately three and a half hours, and at about the two-hour mark we were all looking at each other thinking this is not looking promising,” team diver Antonia Cooper told <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/jan/24/tasmania-new-find-of-extremely-rare-red-handfish-doubles-population-to-80">The Guardian</a>. “My dive partner went to tell the other divers that we were going to start heading in, and I was half-heartedly flicking algae around when, lo and behold, I found a red handfish.”  

Red handfish get their name their unique modified fins which almost resemble hands, and the handfish propels himself by “walking” on the fins.  

The rare and endangered species was thought to be nearly extinct, with only 20 to 40 remaining until the recent discovery. Habitat degradation and low breeding rates are to blame for the species’ low numbers. 

However, now with its bolstered population numbers, researchers are reconsidering a breeding program that would help increase the handfish’s population and bring it back from the verge of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cloning-reverse-extinction/">extinction</a>. 

Previously, a captive breeding program that would help ensure the species’ continued survival was out of the question because of such low numbers. 

“It was considered too risky to remove any egg masses or individuals because it could be the last population,” said Rick Stuart-Smith, IMAS scientist. “There's going to be a re-discussion (about breeding).”

New population of red handfish discovered, doubling its numbers

Experts at the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a> are reporting that declining populations of honeybees must not be treated as part of the global biodiversity crisis. The researchers argue that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/blue-orchard-bees/">honeybees</a> are basically the same as livestock, and should not be categorized with the thousands of wild pollinator species which are experiencing dramatic declines.

The authors of the study said that there is a “lack of distinction” between an agricultural problem and an urgent biodiversity issue. The researchers explained that domesticated honeybees are actually contributing to the disappearance of wild bees.

“Honeybees are artificially-bred agricultural animals similar to livestock such as pigs and cows. Except this livestock can roam beyond any enclosures to disrupt local ecosystems through competition and disease,” explained study co-author Dr. Juan P. González-Varo.

According to the experts, the proposed initiatives to keep honeybees in urban areas or protected regions would contribute to the loss of wild pollinators.

“The crisis in global pollinator decline has been associated with one species above all, the western honeybee,” said co-author Dr. Jonas Geldmann. “Yet this is one of the few pollinator species that is continually replenished through breeding and agriculture.” 

Geldmann explained that saving the honeybee does not help wildlife. 

“Western honeybees are a commercially managed species that can actually have negative effects on their immediate environment through the massive numbers in which they are introduced.”

Developing honeybee colonies for crop pollination becomes a problem because many major flowering crops only bloom for a period of days or weeks, yet honeybees are active for nine to twelve months. This results in a massive “spillover” of farmed honeybees into the landscape, potentially out-competing wild pollinators.

“Levels of wild pollinators, such as species of solitary bumblebee, moth and hoverfly, continue to decline at an alarming rate. Currently, up to 50% of all European bee species are threatened with extinction,” said Geldmann.

“The past decade has seen an explosion in research on honeybee loss and the dangers posed to crops. Yet little research has been done to understand wild native pollinator declines, including the potential negative role of managed honeybees.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>.

Conservationists argue saving honeybees is an agricultural issue

Researchers at <a href="http://www.goethe-university-frankfurt.de/">Goethe University Frankfurt</a> are reporting that mammals are much less mobile in human-modified landscapes. The study is the first to examine the movement of many different species across the globe in both natural and man-made settings. The experts say that this decreased mobility may have widespread consequences.

A team led by biologist Dr. Marlee Tucker has shown that animal movement is significantly reduced in areas which have been altered by people. The study revealed that mammals move across up to 50 percent less distance in human-affected regions compared to what they cover in more preserved land areas.

Tucker and 114 co-authors collected movement data from 803 animals of 57 different species from all over the world. 

“Our study looks at everything from hares to wild boars to elephants,” said Tucker. “The scientists in our team equipped individual animals with a GPS tracking device that recorded each animal's location every hour for a period of at least two months.”

The results were compared to data from the Human Footprint Index. This tool provides measurements of how much an area has been altered by human activities such as infrastructure and agriculture.

Over a period of 10 days, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mammals-identify-smells-second/">mammals</a> were found to only cover a half to one third of the land in areas with a large human footprint compared to those animals in natural landscapes. The study also revealed that, over the course of time frames shorter than ten days, movement among the mammals was no different between the varying landscapes. 

The researchers said that the animals may move less simply because they have changed their behavior to adapt to human activities.

“In some of these areas there might be more food available so that animals do not need to cover such large distances,” said co-author Dr. Thomas Mueller. “In addition, landscape fragmentation and barriers created by infrastructure might limit mammalian movements.”

The experts pointed out that the reduced travel distances could affect the productivity of ecosystems that depend on animal movements. 

“It is important that animals move, because in moving they carry out important ecological functions like transporting nutrients and seeds between different areas,” explained Tucker. “Additionally, mammalian movements bring different species together and thus allow for interactions in food webs that might otherwise not occur. If mammals move less this could alter any of these ecosystem functions. For example, the dispersal of plant seeds by animals between different habitats could be endangered.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>.

Mammals are moving less as humans alter their landscapes

Few things are more satisfying than swatting a particularly annoying <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mosquitoes-suck-blood-noticing/">mosquito</a> that’s been buzzing around you on a hot, summer day. And while it may seem like a missed swat attempt is a lost opportunity to get rid of the offending insect, new research finds that this may not be the case. 

A recent study published in <a href="http://www.cell.com/current-biology/home">Current Biology</a> found that mosquitoes were able to learn to associate a particular odor with the unpleasant feeling of being swatted — causing them to avoid the scent in the future. 

It’s been known that mosquitoes don’t exactly bite at random, as they show clear preferences for some people over others. They are also know to alternate hosts seasonally, generally feeding on birds in the summer and mammals and birds during the rest of the year. Researcher Jeffrey Riffell of the <a href="http://www.washington.edu/">University of Washington, Seattle</a> wanted to find out more about what factors influence a mosquitoes’ biting preferences.

Riffell and his colleagues trained mosquitoes by combining the odor of a specific person or animal species with a mechanical shock, simulating the shock by using a vortexer machine. Surprisingly, the insects quickly learned to associate a host odor with the mechanical shock, and would fly away from the odor once this association was made. “Once mosquitoes learned odors in an aversive manner, those odors caused aversive responses on the same order as responses to DEET, which is one of the most effective mosquito repellents,” says Riffell. “Moreover, mosquitoes remember the trained odors for days.”

It is well known that in many animals learning depends on dopamine in the brain. To test this in mosquitoes, the researchers glue the insects to a custom 3D-printed holder that allowed the insects to fly in place while the neuronal activity in the olfactory center of their brains was recorded. The neurons in the olfactory center of genetically modified mosquitoes lacking dopamine receptors were less likely to fire compared to normal mosquitoes. Because of this, these mosquitoes showed a decreased ability to process and learn from odor information.

These findings could have important implications for mosquito control and the eradication of mosquito-borne diseases that affect millions each year. 

“By understanding how mosquitoes are making decisions on whom to bite, and how learning influences those behaviors, we can better understand the genes and neuronal bases of the behaviors,” explains Riffell. “This could lead to more effective tools for mosquito control.”

Swatting mosquitoes helps them learn to avoid your scent

The remains of a beloved male pygmy elephant known as Sabre were found on New Year's Eve in Sabah, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bornean-elephants-origin/">Borneo</a>, according to a new report from <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/jan/03/wborneo-pygmy-smallest-elephants-pygmy-killed-for-ivoryorlds-smallest-elephants-killed-for-ivory-in-borneo">The Guardian</a>. Sabre was the second pygmy elephant found in the month of December that had been slaughtered by poachers.

The Borneo pygmy is the smallest breed of elephants in the world and there are only around 1,500 left in existence, according to the <a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/">World Wildlife Fund</a>. The pygmy elephants have over-sized ears and baby faces, with a more gentle nature than other Asian elephants.

Sabre had been rescued by members of Sabah’s Wildlife Rescue Unit from a palm oil plantation in October. He was nicknamed for his unusual tusks that curved downward like the teeth of a sabre-toothed tiger. Sabre was released into the wild, as poaching was not yet considered to be an issue in this region.

The pygmy elephants of Borneo have been classified as endangered for several decades due to habitat loss and deforestation, and now they have another serious threat to contend with.

Benoit Goossens has a background in conservation genetics and is the director of the <a href="http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/danau-girang-field-centre">Danau Girang Field Centre</a>, a research and training facility co-managed by Sabah Wildlife Department and Cardiff University.

Goossens told <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/">The Guardian</a>: “My hope is that Sabah wakes up…we are losing our megafauna, the rhino is gone, the banteng [wild cow] is going, the elephant will be next. Those crimes should not go unpunished. Let’s not lose our jewels, the next generation will not forgive us.”

Goossens said that the gruesome discoveries indicate the presence of a professional hunter and trader in the area.

Wildlife veterinarian Pakeeyaraj Nagalingam was one of the team members who helped to rescue and relocate Sabre.

“There are no words to express our sadness,” Nagalingam told The Guardian. “It looks like there is no safe place for elephants in Sabah anymore. The relevant authorities who are responsible for enforcement of illegal wildlife poaching and other illegal activities must work harder and smarter.”

To fully understand the effects that climate change, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deforestation-amazon-fish-yields/">deforestation</a>, and conservation efforts are having on different ecosystems, it's important to know and account for all the different species that live on Earth.

That’s why accurate measurements of biodiversity across the globe are becoming more and more of a priority. 

But due to the enormous scope, biodiversity has been proven difficult to measure, and biodiversity surveys can be costly and difficult to conduct.  

As such, experts are now turning to biodiversity upscaling, which is the process of estimating species’ populations across a large area based on a relatively small sample of surveys. 

Many different methods have been suggested for biodiversity upscaling, but whether or not these efforts could successfully map biodiversity across the globe is still up for debate. 

A new study published in the journal Ecological Monographs put 19 different techniques for biodiversity upscaling to the test using one data set. 

The study asked researchers who had created a biodiversity upscaling method to test their system by applying it to the <a href="http://www.countrysidesurvey.org.uk/">1999 Great Britain Countryside Survey</a>. 

The results were then compared with the true species-area relationship of plants in great Britain, or the accurate biodiversity of plant species in the area, to see which method shows the most promise for measuring global biodiversity. 

The model that seemed to have the most success was a sampling theory created by Fangliang He from the <a href="https://www.ualberta.ca/">University of Alberta, Canada</a> and Tsung-Jen Shen from the <a href="http://www.nchu.edu.tw/en-index">National Chung Hsing University </a>in Taiwan. 

The sampling theory made estimates that were within a ten percent range of the true biodiversity of species. However, this theory proved poorly suited to measuring biodiversity in smaller areas. 

Two other models also performed well, but some models were not even close to gauging the 2,3000 plant species of Great Britain’s ecosystem. The estimates ranged from to 62 species in total to 11,593. 

The results, while greatly varied, are still promising as the three models that came close to the real data could pave the way for a global upscaling measurement method that accurately estimates biodiversity.

“We have shown that mathematical modeling of biodiversity upscaling has come of age,” said William Kunin from the <a href="http://www.leeds.ac.uk/">University of Leeds</a> and study’s lead author. “These methods will greatly facilitate biodiversity estimation in poorly-studied taxa and regions and the monitoring of biodiversity change at multiple spatial scales.”

Brian Brown of the <a href="https://nhm.org/">Natural History Museum</a> in Los Angeles discovered a highly unusual fly species in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/illegal-activity-brazilian-amazon/">Brazilian Amazon</a>. The fly had certain features which immediately inspired the entomologist to name the new insect after Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“As soon as I saw those bulging legs, I knew I had to name this one after Arnold,” said Brown. “Not only is he a major cultural icon and an important person in the political realm, his autobiography gave me some hope that I could improve my body as a skinny teenager.” 

Brown says that the fly has many other features that stand out as well. “It is known only from one female specimen that we almost overlooked because it is so incredibly small,” he explains.

According to Brown, the Megapropodiphora arnoldi is actually the world's smallest fly, measuring only 0.395 millimeters in body length. Unlike the bulked up forelegs that earned the fly its name, the rest of the legs and the wings appear to be extremely reduced.

Based on its sharp ovipositor, Brown is convinced that the fly is a parasitoid, which is a parasite that ultimately kills its hosts. Brown explains that the fly likely latches on to an ant or a termite and rides along until it can fully take advantage of the host.

Brown has been exceptionally successful at finding new species of tiny flies, which he describes as “the continuing frontier for insect discovery.” He says that almost all of the flies in remote and tropical regions are unknown. In 2016 alone, Brian and his research team described a total of 12 new scuttle fly species at once.

Researchers from <a href="https://edmlink.com/">EDM International</a> have investigated the risk of golden eagle electrocution by power poles, as well as mitigation strategies. As a result of their analysis, the team is proposing new techniques that could be used to target high-risk poles regionally and prevent the eagles from being harmed.

Approximately 504 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/golden-eagles-migrate/">eagles</a> are electrocuted every year in North America, despite efforts to upgrade power poles to avian-friendly standards. The researchers took a closer look at these efforts, particularly those strategies documented from 1940 to 2016, and developed a technique which they believe could substantially reduce eagle mortalities.

The study authors have highlighted eight electrocution risk factors. They found that pole configuration was the most frequent risk factor, while age was the second most frequently identified issue. 

Risk was also associated with large body size, high-quality habitat, high prey density, winter dispersal, inclement weather, and intraspecific interactions. The researchers pointed out that risk modeling based on these factors could help managers identify the poles that most urgently needed to be modified.

The study also revealed that juvenile eagles were electrocuted at around twice the rate of subadults or adults.

Elizabeth Mojica is a wildlife biologist with <a href="https://edmlink.com/">EDM International</a> in Fort Collins, Colorado, and the lead author of the study. Mojica conducts research that is focused on understanding and preventing avian electrocution and collisions with infrastructure.

“Electrocution of eagles is preventable with careful retrofitting of existing poles and use of avian-friendly construction design on new poles located in eagle habitat,” said Mojica.

The study authors suggest that some type of mitigation funding provided to the utility companies may motivate them to complete the needed modifications.

The study is published in the <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)1937-2817">Journal of Wildlife Management</a>.

It’s a commonly known fact of biology that animals living in colder climates typically have larger bodies — an adaptation that helps reduce heat loss in frigid temperatures (and also a good excuse if you’ve been bulking up this winter). But with the impacts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-sea-turtles/">climate change</a> growing more imperative each day, understanding how temperature affects animals is becoming more important than ever. Now, new research suggests that global warming may actually cause bird populations to shrink in physical size.

A recent study from <a href="https://www.mq.edu.au/">Macquarie University</a>, published in <a href="http://www.americanornithology.org/content/auk-ornithological-advances">The Auk: Ornithological Advances</a>, analyzed the size of European House Sparrows in order to see if there was any relation to the temperature of the climates they inhabit. This species has spread into a variety of climates in Australia and New Zealand since they were first introduced in the mid-19th century.

The researchers hypothesized that this population spread might be in part due to rising temperatures as a result of climate change. “If variation in body size is linked directly or indirectly to adapting to different climates, then body size could be useful for monitoring the extent to which bird populations are capable of adapting rapidly to changing climates,” says Samuel Andrew of <a href="https://www.mq.edu.au/">Macquarie University</a>.

The researchers captured and measured about 40 adult House Sparrows at each of the 30 locations they chose around Australia and New Zealand. Their findings indicate that maximum temperatures during the summer — when the birds breed — were a better predictor of adult body size at each location than winter minimum temperatures. These results support the idea that excessive heat during development may affect birds’ growth throughout their lives, which is a cause for concern that increasing summer temperatures due to climate change may drive down the average adult bird body size — with potential effects on the species’ fitness.

“This paper is an important addition to a growing body of work that is changing our understanding of the relationships between climate and body size,” says Tim Parker of <a href="https://www.whitman.edu/">Whitman College</a>, an expert who was not involved with the study. “The big question generated by these results is the extent to which the observed relationship is the outcome of adaptive evolutionary differences among sites as opposed to direct developmental responses to different temperatures.” He goes on to point out that the authors of this study also published experimental evidence of a direct effect of temperature on growth in a different bird species, potentially backing up the findings of this study as well.

“Our work on this common species helps us to understand the adaptive responses of birds to a changing climate and their constraints, and this fundamental knowledge will help future workers and managers focus their work on other species and potentially identify those species most at risk from climate change,” says Andrew.

Global warming may actually cause birds to shrink

It’s a commonly known fact of biology that animals living...

If you’ve ever felt the pangs of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reason-looking-food-hungry/">hunger</a> turn into frustration and annoyance, then you’ve likely experienced being “hangry.” The feeling of hunger can cause us to become noticeably more emotional, and even change our decision making. But new research suggests that animals — humans included — can make surprisingly good decisions just based on the food in their stomach.

Led by the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>, the study found that surviving in difficult and dangerous situations doesn’t actually necessitate a high-functioning brain. What does help is if animals are sensitive to their body condition, such as how hungry they are. Hunger acts as a memory of past food availability, letting the animal know what conditions may be like currently.

The research team, led by Dr. Andrew Higginson of the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>, used computer modelling to predict how animals would behave to maximize survival when food supply is unpredictable and the environment is full of predators. Their model determined that an animal that bases its decision-making on only its current resources can survive almost as long as one that uses its brain to calculate the best move to make.

“Our model explains why there is link between our gut and our decisions: hunger can act as a memory telling us there’s not been much food around, which it’s important to respond to in the wild,” explains Higginson. “The usefulness of such memory means that animals, including humans, may appear to be processing a great deal of information in the brain when in fact they are just following their gut.”

The authors believe that this simple, physiological form of memory may have allowed animals to negate investing in building brain tissue, which is a major energy requirement. “If it costs a lot of resources to be so clever, then natural selection will have found a cheaper way to make decisions,” posits John McNamara, a professor at the <a href="http://www.bris.ac.uk/maths/">University of Bristol’s School of Mathematics</a> and author on the study. “The ability to use internal states such as hunger as a memory will have reduced the need to evolve big brains.”

Pushing beyond these findings, it seems quite possible that simple memories could also be encoded in other physiological states — emotions, for example. If this is the case, it could explain why it takes a long time to calm down after feeling threatened. The emotion keeps the body in fight or flight mode just in case the threat returns. The authors suggest that our ability to use emotions as “memory” might be why we even have emotions in the first place. 

Beyond exploring the physiological implications of these findings, this research also has implications for conservation. “By using their body condition as a cue, the animals in our model can still perform well when the environmental conditions change suddenly,” says Higginson. “This suggests that some species might be able to cope with the effects of climate change better than expected.”

Hanger is real: gut instinct helps animals survive

Researchers at the <a href="http://www.ox.ac.uk/">University of Oxford</a> are reporting that Asian elephants are intimidated by bees. A new study in Sri Lanka has demonstrated that Asian elephants retreat from the simulated sound of angry honey bees. 

While researchers have used recordings of disturbed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/east-african-honey-bees/">honey bees</a> for many years to show that African elephants are naturally threatened by them, this is the first time the technique has been used with Asian elephants.

The study revealed that Asian elephants retreated even further away and were significantly more vocal in response to the bee simulations than African elephants. The experts believe that beehive deterrents, which have been used to keep African elephants off of rural farms, can now be applied to Asian elephant populations as well.

The study was led by Dr. Lucy King, a research associate in the Department of Zoology and head of the Human-Elephant Co-Existence Program for Save the Elephants. 

“Asia has even higher levels of human-elephant conflict than Africa does and Asian elephants are approximately 10 times more endangered than African elephants,” said Dr. King. “If we could help apply the results from this research to develop effective community-based beehive fence deterrent systems for rural Asian farmers living with elephants, we could have a significant impact on the survival of the Asian elephant species.”

The study was conducted in Udawalawe National Park, which has an exceptionally large elephant population. 

“Udawalawe is a microcosm for the issues Asian elephants face, because it is practically encircled by agriculture and settlements,” said study co-author Dr. Shermin de Silva. “This study takes the first step in offering a new way of addressing the conflicts that arise as a result.”

In collaboration with the Sri Lankan Wildlife Conservation Society and Newcastle University in Australia, 10 trial beehive fence projects have been deployed in an effort to reduce human-elephant conflict on rural farms in central Sri Lanka.

“We have a wonderful community of willing farmers there who are helping us understand if beehive fences could work to reduce conflict in this intensely high human-elephant conflict zone,” said Dr. King. “Although beehive fences may not completely stop elephant crop-raids the honey bees provide other benefits to the farms in the form of pollination services and a sustainable income from honey and wax products.”

Asian beehive fence projects are also being developed by scientists for testing in Thailand, India, and Nepal.

The study is published in <a href="http://www.cell.com/current-biology/home">Current Biology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes a new map of Mars that is providing insight into the planet’s watery past. The map also reveals where future missions could safely land on Mars.&nbsp;



The map has been created over the last decade using observations of water-rich rocks and mineral deposits. The images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.



"A big surprise is the prevalence of these minerals, with the map revealing hundreds of thousands of water-affected locations in the oldest parts of the planet," says ESA. "The new data will help answer exciting questions about Mars’ climate history, whether water was globally persistent or confined to short, intense episodes, and whether the conditions were ever suitable for life."



"Specifically, the map shows the locations and abundances of aqueous minerals. These are from rocks that have been chemically altered by the action of water in the past, and have typically been transformed into clays and salts."



According to John Carter of the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), our collective understanding of Mars has been oversimplified. He explained that planetary scientists have tended to think that only a few types of clay minerals on Mars were created during its wet period, then as the water gradually dried up, salts were produced across the planet.



The new map shows that the composition of Mars is much more complicated than what we thought. For example, while many salts formed after Martian clays, there are some salts that are presumed to be older than some of the clays.&nbsp;



“The evolution from lots of water to no water is not as clear cut as we thought, the water didn’t just stop overnight. We see a huge diversity of geological contexts, so that no one process or simple timeline can explain the evolution of the mineralogy of Mars. That’s the first result of our study. The second is that if you exclude life processes on Earth, Mars exhibits a diversity of mineralogy in geological settings just as Earth does,” said Carter.

The experts found that the muscle metabolism of cavefish has been genetically reprogrammed over time. As a result, the animals have experienced major changes in their morphology and behavior. Despite these changes, however, the cavefish remain healthy and fit.



The research may provide new clues about the evolutionary consequences of prolonged physical inactivity in humans.&nbsp;



“It’s no surprise that people are moving less and less as technology has advanced,” said Rohner. “With cavefish, we have a unique system where we can study what might happen if people remained couch potatoes over very, very long periods of time.”

Rising sea levels pose one of the biggest societal threats associated with climate change. According to ESA, satellite altimeter missions such as Copernicus Sentinel-6 are essential in monitoring global and regional changes in sea level.



"Unbeknown to many, the island of Crete, Greece, plays an important role in the Copernicus satellite altimetry constellation and on an international stage," reports ESA.



"Satellite altimetry data have to be continuously monitored at the ESA’s Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration where different techniques have pioneered the use of transponders to provide the best measurements to validate satellite altimeters in space soon after launch."



Dr. Craig Donlon explains that, by understanding planet Earth through satellite measurements, we are able to find evidence of change.&nbsp;
