It is endemic to Hawaii, where it is known only from the Wahiawa Mountains of Kauai. It is threatened by exotic plant species and feral pigs. It is a federally listed endangered species of the United States.Viola helenae is a small, erect, unbranched subshrub (3‐8 m tall), in the violet family (Violaceae). Leaves are long and narrow and clustered at the top of the plant. Flowers are pale lavender or white, occurring singly or in pairs on the upper leaf axis.
