Description

Carex austrodeflexa (sect. acrocystis) is described from the coastal plain of the southeastern united States. this species inhabits distinc- tive wetland communities in streamheads and small-stream swamps, usually under seepage influence. it is the only wetland member of section acrocystis found in the southern Atlantic and gulf coastal Plain. it may be told from the morphologically similar Carex deflexa on the basis of its loosely cespitose habit with long, slender, reddish rhizomes, papillose, glabrate, elliptic perigynium, longer perigynium beak, and longer staminate scales and spikes.
