Description

Campsidium valdivianum is a liana whose branches reach a diameter of 2.5 cm. The twigs have an irregular, almost square cross-section and are not hairy except for a few fine scales. The leaves are opposite and divided into five to 17 pinnate leaves. These are sessile, entire or slightly jagged towards the tip, elliptical in shape, rounded or slightly pointed at the tip and rounded or obliquely wedge-shaped at the base. They are membranous, reach a length of 0.8 to 3.7 cm, a width of 0.5 to 1.5 cm and are studded with scattered red scales on both sides. The main axis of the leaf is bordered between the leaflets to narrowly winged. The petiole is 1 to 3 cm long and only inconspicuously covered with scales. The inflorescences are racemes composed of a few flowers that are terminal and hairless or only slightly fine-scaled. The calyx is bell-shaped, 6 to 12 mm long and 7 to 9 mm wide and evenly studded with five approximately 2 to 3 mm long, triangular and somewhat pointed teeth. The crown is tubular, red in color and slightly narrowed at the tip. It is 3 to 3.5 cm long, the corolla abyss has a diameter of 0.5 to 0.8 cm, the corolla tube is 2.5 to 3 cm long and has 0.3 to 0.5 cm long corolla lobes. The corolla tube is only at the starting points of the four stamenshairy, the corolla lobes are ciliated and downy hairy on the inside with short, beaded trichomes. The anthers are only slightly above the crown, they consist of two parallel, non-forked counters that are partially fused with the tip of the stamen. They are 4 to 5 mm long; the connective tissue between the counters (connective) is slightly enlarged. The stamp is 3 to 3.5 cm long. The ovary is ovate, 3 mm long, 1.5 mm wide and somewhat glandular- papillous, but otherwise glabrous. The ovules are in several rows in the ovary chambers. The flower bottomis very thin, cup-shaped, 1 mm long and 1.5 mm wide. The fruit is a narrowly elliptical capsule 5.5 to 8.5 mm long and 2.3 to 3 cm in diameter. It stands on a perennial calyx, is stalked, blunt or slightly pointed at the tip. Their surface is lightly covered with inconspicuous, fine scales. The seeds are thin, elliptical, 7 to 10 mm long and 12 to 15 mm wide. The small body of the seed is distinct from a surrounding brownish-veined and translucent wing. The species occurs in the region around Valdivia in Chile and southern Argentina and grows at altitudes between 0 and 800 m.
