(Gopherus berlandieri)
In both the male and female specimens,in the front part of the plastron there is a sort of rostrum, more developed and bifid in males;the latter use it during fights with other males for possession of the female. It is possible to distinguish the male from the female also from a concavity present on the abdominal scutum of the plastron, and that is used during the coupling allowing a better adaptation to the curvature of the carapace.
