Description

Hapalomys delacouri is a rodent of the genus Hapalomys that occurs in southern Guangxi and in Hainan (southern China ),in northern Laos and in central Vietnam. There are Holocene fossils found in Sichuan and Guizhou and Pleistocene fossils in Guangxi and Northeast Thailand. It is a rare species,so it is not surprising if it is found alive in a larger area. The coat is thick and soft. The back is ocher brown, the bottom is white. The tail is relatively short and the tip is not very hairy. The face is ocher brown. The ears are brown and relatively large. The feet are small. The head-to-body length is 121 to 136 mm,the tail length is 140 to 171 mm,the hindfoot length is 22 to 24 mm and the ear length is 14 to 15 mm.Females have 1 + 1 + 2 = 8 mammae. There may be three subspecies ( H.d.delacouri from Central Vietnam,H.d.milosa from Hainan and H.d.pasquieri ) from North Laos, but so few are known that it is probably too early to to recognize subspecies.H.d.pasquieri is smaller and has a hairier tail than H.d.delacouri.
