(Hippocamelus antisensis)
The northern huemul ( Hippocamelus antisensis d'Orbigny,1834 ),also known as taruca,is a mammal endangered belonging to the family of Deer who lives in South America,on the slopes of the Andes and other orographic systems neighbors.It is closely related to the southern huemul,very similar in appearance (the northern species is only slimmer and a little higher).Taruca is the name by which this species is referred to in Aymara and Quechuaand,although these two languages are not related to each other,in both cases the name means " deer ".The scientific name of the genus,Hippocamelus,means "horse-camel",because the first scholars who described this animal questioned its taxonomic position.
