Description

The Alouatta caraya has a marked sexual dimorphism : the male,which can reach 8 kg of weight,has a uniformly black fur,while the female,weighing less than 5 kg,is a straw-yellow color.The puppies of both sexes have a yellow-gold fur.The snout is black and hairless in both sexes.They have a long prehensile tail,glabrous on the lower face,which they use as a real fifth limb.Like all the so-called howler monkeys,they have a hyoid bone and a large larynx that allows them to generate the characteristic sound emissions.
