Steller’s eider

(Polysticta stelleri)

Description

The Spectacled Eider ( Steller's Eider ) or eider boy,two is a species of bird Anseriformes family Anatidae inhabiting the shores of the Arctic, eastern Siberia and Alaska.Build your nests on the tundra, near the sea,and deposit between six and ten eggs each time.It migrates to the south of the Bering Sea,north of Scandinavia and to the Baltic Sea.It can form very numerous colonies,of more than two hundred thousand birds,in the coasts suitable for its reproduction. This area is located just south of its common habitat. This species feeds on crustaceans and molluscs, with a marked preference for mussels. It usually sinks in the water to capture its prey.He is the smallest of the eiders. The male is unmistakable, with its blackupper part and its collar around its neck, with its white head and yellowish-colored legs. Its call consists of a deep song, although it is relatively silent compared to those of the other members of the genus Somateria. The female presents a plumage of dark brown color,is smaller and its head and body are more similar to those of the common ducks than in the other eiders. It also has a repertoire of grunts and whistles. This bird got its name from the German naturalist Georg Steller. It is believed that Steller's eider has crossed and formed hybrids with the common eider on at least two occasions. In Germany,a male specimen with characteristics of both species was found on November 17,1993.3 Just less than two years later,on April 7,1995,another male was sighted in Norway;A photograph of this bird was published in a book by Forsman (1995).
