Go Green

In order to “go green” in the modern world today means that people need to start looking at ways to reduce their ecological impact upon the earth by driving less, eating less meat, wearing sustainable fabrics, and realizing that eco-friendly activities are critically important to the health of the planet.

The origins of the modern green movement can actually be traced back to before the founding of this country, but things really started happening in the late 60’s and early 70’s when the foundations for today’s era of extreme environmental awareness began to emerge around the globe. There were numerous earth and pollution-related events that transpired during the 70’s that had the effect of raising the environmental consciousness of society as a whole.

The National Environmental Policy Act, the Clean Air Act, the founding of Earth Day, the banning of DDT, the Water Pollution Control Act, and the Endangered Species Act were all big issues thrust into the public awareness at the time. The toxic disasters of Love Canal in 1978 and Three Mile Island in 1979 were both examples of the consequences of waste, pollution, and toxic contamination that became permanently etched into the public psyche. Later, the 80’s saw multiple disastrous oil spills followed by the general turmoil of the 90’s, when disturbing international events, catastrophic weather changes, regional wars and oil shortages put environmental concerns on the front burner of public attention.

Today, Americans and citizens from all over the world are enlisting in a global “go green” movement. The push is on to conserve, develop eco-friendly modes of consumption and use fewer resources. People all over the planet are learning to recycle, compost, and grow their own food in order to develop a better understanding of the complex interactions between money, health and the environment. People are getting behind the technology of conservative, efficient and sustainable lifestyles. More people than ever before are becoming aware of human impact on the planet and our fellow man.

To go green means taking steps to create sustainable lifestyles and maintaining a positive connection with the environment. Going green means getting involved in community activities and supporting local green causes. If everyone on earth would go green, it could change the history of the planet.
